Full textRed mud is a by-product of the Bayer process which is used for the production of alumina from bauxite, and is generally discarded as a waste (around 35 million tons per year). Red mud contains 20 to 30% of iron oxide and other materials which are able of pozzolanic reaction after calcination. In order to investigate the possibility of using this waste material as a pozzolanic pigment for colored concrete, tests were carried out to examine the pozzolanic properties of calcined red mud. The transformation is a thermic activation at middle temperatures (600 to 800°C) which implies the dehydration of boehmite, goethite, hydrargilite and hydrogrenats. 1t was observed from the results that the calcined red mud in the cement paste behaved like a pozzolana by consuming the Ca(OH)² in the first hours of hydration. The calcium hydroxide react with the amorphous alumina of calcined red mud, forming mostly tetracalcium carboaluminate hydrates. The best treatment of the red mud consists in a calcination at 800°C, followed by extinction with 25% of water. The amount of calcined red mud which gives the most important consumption of lime, the best mechanical performances and the higher coloration power, is 20%. The compressive strengths obtained show that the substitutions of respectively 20 and 30% of CPA by calcined red mud (at 800°C + 25% H20) gives reactivity indices of 0. 92 and 0. 78 at 28 days

Full textThis study is part of a project aiming to develop biosourced material that satisfies sustainable development in the construction area. The object of the study is to develop a new pozzolanic binder and to characterize the hempcrete fabricated from this binder and plant aggregates (hemp shives). Hemp shives are the ligneous particles extracted from hemp stem as a co-product of the process of hemp fiber extraction. The physical properties of the hemp shives, such as particle size distribution, water absorption, bulk density and thermal conductivity are assessed. The formulations of the new pozzolanic binder are based on a mix of hydraulic or slaked lime, flash metakaolin and some admixtures. The mechanical and thermal properties of the hempcrete composite are then tested. The study concludes that the new pozzolanic binder not only presents high mechanical performance from an early age but can also be considered as an eco-material. The hempcrete made of hemp shives and pozzolanic matrix will also have considerable potential as an eco-material with the new properties achieved such as a reduction of water absorption, an improvement of mechanical performance and a good capacity of thermal insulation

Full textThe use of the so-called “potentially reactive” (PR) aggregates, with respect to Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR), leads to concrete degradations. In order to avoid the expansion of concrete made with them, some mineral additions such as burnt oil shales (SC) can be used as substituents to the clinker. The present work has a two aims, first to better understand the role of the SC against ASR and then the behavior of the siliceous limestone PR of Brunnen towards ASR. Among the aggregates used, the Brunnen was characterized. The presence of crypto to micro-SiO2, consisting of monocrystalline quartz, seems to be very reactive by its small size and would engender the expansion of concretes based on this aggregate. Despite a mineralogical and textural complexity, a micro-SiO2 was highlighted. The action of SC towards ASR was then studied by a model reactor and finally in concretes. Results show a beneficial effect of SC in the model reactor, in spite of non optimal conditions to show the pozzolanic reaction. As far as that goes, SC allowed the decrease of concrete expansions under the threshold limit for a 17 %wt of SC for flint and 30 %wt of SC or with CEM II/B-M (S,T) 42,5 R (Robusto 4R-S) for siliceous limestones. SC could have a dual effect of inhibiting ASR by fixing alkalis on products of the pozzolanic reaction and also neutralizing alkalis on its micro-SiO2

Full textThe utilisation of calcined clay (metakaolin) as a pozzolanic material for mortar and concrete has received considerable attention in recent years. This work deals with the influence of the calcination conditions of kaolinite and the characterisation of dehydroxylation. The mechanism of thermal dehydroxylation has been investigated by means of kinectics description and characterisation of structural modifications occurring during the transformation into metakaolinite (thermical analysis, infra-red spectrometry, MAS-NMR, X-Ray diffraction). Clearly, the kinetic of kaolinite dehydroxylation is depends upon the degree of disorder of kaolinite crystals. The dehydroxylation of disordered kaolinite is easier than the dehydroxylation of well ordered kaolinite. Metakaolinite is the subsequent of the structural breakdown of kaolinite. 29Si and 27Al RMN-MAS show that metakaolin contains Al in octahedral, pentahedral, tetrahedral coordination and differents sites of Si. Metakaolin contains small amounts of the original structure of kaolinite. Metakaolin partially dehydroxylated is highly pozzolanic. Flash calciner produces very reactive métakaolin. Pozzolanic activity (at 7 days) depends on the mineralogical structure of Al, Si and surface state. Blended cements containing 25% metakaolin, exhibit interesting mechanical properties at 28 and 90 days. The compressive strength of blended cement depends on physical parameters like particule size distribution

Full textThe present study deals with the microwave hydration of metakaolin lended cement used in Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement Composites (GRCC). Microwave treatment conditions have been optimized and compared to the results obtained with room temperature curing. Lime consumption has been measured by means of Infrared Spectrometry and differential Thermal Analysis. It was shown that the pozzolanic activity of metakaolin is enhanced by the microwave treatment, allowing halfway reduction of the necessary amount of metakaolin to consume the total calcium hydroxide generated by cement. Mortars and RCC mechanical characteristics have been measured. It was shown that high initial resistances and law porosity can be obtained with the microwave curing technique. It appears that the temperature generated inside of the material itself leads to the thermal acceleration of setting. A modification of hydrates morphology was observed by §canning Electron Microscopy

Full textHydroelectric dams, as well as waterways and marine harbours, can be subject to solid particles accumulation. Although sediment is mainly managed within the watercourse by a transfer into the downstream river bed, technical or environmental reasons might imply an on-land management in the future. Albeit sediments should be considered as waste according to regulations, dredged materials appear as valuable and renewable resources. In a circular economy approach, some industrial sectors could beneficially reuse fine-grained dam sediment as alternative raw materials, including hydraulic binders industry. Then, two ways of reusing are considered in this PhD thesis with on one hand, a valorization as raw material in the clinker meal and, on the other hand, as pozzolanic substitute to clinker in blended cements.Studying 8 different sediments that were sampled on the French territory, the approach aims to encompass various contexts and define some typologies. The materials are characterized in detail on physico-chemical and mineralogical aspects. These preliminary characterisations are necessary in order to test both the beneficial reuse opportunities and check the suitability of dredged sediments. The beneficial reuse of sediment in the clinker raw meal as replacement of traditional clay resources is experimented at the lab scale. Clinkers that maximize the fine-grained sediment content, between 25 and 35 % according to the sediment, are synthetized. These clinkers exhibit some special microstructural features that can be corrected by a clay addition as a third compound. Thus, it is shown that any sediment can be reused in the raw meal and that clinker characteristics can be anticipated and adjusted. As a demonstration, a CEM I 52.5 N cement was obtained incorporating 11.4 % of sediment in the raw meal.Concerning pozzolanic reactivity development, physical and mineralogical sediment characteristics are followed according to the calcination temperature. In parallel, pozzolanic reactivity is assessed with both chemical and physical tests, with a partial substitution of Portland cement by calcined sediments in cement pastes, in order to determine an optimum calcination temperature. Kaolinite contents around 10 % for some of the studied samples lead to a moderate to high pozzolanic reactivity, that can be comparable to fly ash. However, for all the sediments that contain calcite and only illite and chlorite clays, activation is low or null

Full textAn axis of sustainable development deals with recycling and valorization of the majority of waste. In France, the average volume of sediments annually dredged is estimated to be 50 millions cubic meters. In the research presented in this dissertation, the valorization of dredged sediment at the autonomous port of Le Havre is proposed. Four binders, namely, lime, fly ash, cement and silica fume were used in this study. After a general introduction on the treatment of dredged sediments, a review of literature is presented in chapter II. Chapter III is devoted to the study of the characteristics of the treated sediment. A method of sample preparation is given in chapter IV. Chapter V present the analysis and interpretation of the results of the experiments. Finally the conclusion and perspectives are proposed in Chapter VI. Upon completion of this work, the use of the dredged sediments as a possible material in the domain of road appears quite conceivable. A technique for treating fine sediments, polluted by an engine oil is presented. On the other hand, the mechanical performance and durability of sediments treated with silica fume are improved

Full textThe incorporation of crop wastes or natural materials in the cement matrix confers interesting properties to composites prepared. The aim of this thesis is to develop a material that can reach the mechanical, thermal and durability requirements for building materials in the humid tropical zone. Firstly, pozzolanic activity of a natural pozzolan, bamboo stem and sugar cane bagasse ashes has been determined. Influence of their incorporation on mechanical properties and durability of mortars exposed to chloride and sulphate ions was studied. Secondly, influence of addition of bagasse fibers on thermal and mechanical properties of composites was studied as a function of various parameters (fibers content, curing, type of cement matrix). These results has shown that the materials studied have pozzolanic activity and it is possible to incorporate them into the cement to fight against corrosion. Moreover, composites elaborated with bagasse fibers are more insulating than those elaborated without fibers. However, from the viewpoint of mechanical properties, incorporation of bagasse fibers decreases flexural strength of composites in the present work and under the conditions producing procedures that were adopted

Full textThe main aim of this work was to contribute to the development of an innovative building material that complies with legislations and users actual requirements concerning environmental and health impacts as well as thermal or hygroscopic comfort. An original pozzolanic matrix has been formulated while conventional admixtures, reinforcement fibres and aggregates were substituted by renewable raw materials. Hardening mechanisms and long term behaviour of that binder (mix of metakaolin and hydraulic lime) have been explored. The benefits of incorporating two organic admixtures on early age properties and long term behaviour of the pozzolanic binder have been explained by the identification of interaction mechanisms between mineral and organic species. A comparative study has been realised on flexural reinforcement of this matrix by vegetable fibres of flax, hemp and yucca and on the durability of these different composites. Finally, the compatibility of this matrix with vegetable aggregates (hemp chènevotte and sunflower stem pith) has been checked and demonstrated in order to formulate self-supporting insulation ecomaterial

Full text[The decreased availability of industrial by-products usually employed for elaboration of pozzolanic binders led us to consider the development of metakaolin by thermal activation of kaolin clays at intermediate temperatures (600-800°c). When metakaolin is mixed with Portland cement,it is possible to get high quality hydraulic fasts. Optimisation of such compounds involves the study of their micro-structure and specially of their porosity. Indeed, porosity and pore size distribution are parameters which affect some of the basic properties of concrete such as strength, permeability and durability. Transformations in porous structures of blended fasts which tend to form a discontinuous network have been demonstrated. ]

To realize this objective, it is possible to use abundant laterites and a middle temperature thermal process (800°C) which is less expansive in energy than the Portland Cement production. The use of physical-chemical techniques (X-ray diffraction - differential thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry) and the study of mechanical strengths on mini-cylinders show the kaolinite content of the laterite is the main factor affecting its reactivity after burning. The strengths reached by mixtures of Portland Cement and burnt laterite are high and the durability of such binders is good because the lime content is lower. Concretes built up with these binders present interesting characterise in view of a low-cost housing in Indonesia. ]

Full textThi s research contributes to the elaboration of materials of construction whose purpose is to valorize in one side, abundant raw materials in developing countries, the "laterite" and in other side, an abundant vegetable in the same regions, the "bamboo". The binders composed with 50 % of artificial Portland cement and 50 % of burnt laterite present sufficiently important tensile strengths, due to the hydrated gehlenite, and acceptable compressive strengths to be used with the bamboo as reinforcement. Also, from the chemical point, this vegetable is less affected in the mixed binder than in the artificial Portland cement. The adjusting of a calculation method based on the limit-state of use allow to size structural elements in bending and indicate the limit of their use. The employment of such elements allow to foresee interesting perspectives in the traditional building of developing countries

Full textThe use of deep soil mixing technology for excavation support is growing worldwide. As soil deep mixing becomes a more economical alternative to traditional support systems for excavation, shallow foundation design and analysis of slope stability and liquefaction of soil, the amelioration of models describing the mechanical behavior of improved soil is required, as a basis for cost-effectiveness and a safer design. This work features a laboratory study of shear strength of a loose silica sand modified with Portland cement only or in combination with high curing time binders (due to pozzolanic reactions) such as lime and silica fume. The effects of cementation on the stress–strain behavior, stiffness and strength of treated sand are investigated through unconfined compression tests, tensile strength tests, direct shear tests and drained triaxial compression tests, for curing times up to 180 days. More precisely, failure modes, shear strength parameters for loose and dense sand, volumetric responses and critical state of cemented sand are described. In addition, this study attempts to develop a « ready mix » design procedure, where the type of binder, water/cement or water/ binder ratios play a major part in the assessment of the targeted strength in deep soil mixing applications for loose granular soils (SP in the unified classification). The results show that the stress–strain behavior of cemented sands is nonlinear with contractive–dilative stages. The stress-strain response is strongly influenced by effective confining pressure and cement content. For uncemented sand, the peak strength occurs for a maximum rate of volumetric expansion, whereas for cemented sand it represents a condition where the summation of all components the maximum intensity become. Finally, the correlation of unconfined compression strength with the index of pozzolanic reaction of lime and silica fume is discussed

Full textThe present study aims to add value to agroindustrial residues as housing and building materials. In this context, the research works revolve around two main lines: the development of an alternative binder using agroindustrial residues and the production of composite materials from this alternative binder and plant resources. Two composed binder using bagasse ash, named bagasse ash lime and cement-bagasse ash, were optimised and produced. Using these composed binder, two kinds of composite materials including plant resources were produced: one composite developed with vegetable aggregates and another one reinforced with eucalyptus pulps. The physical, chemical, mechanical and hydric properties of these materials were investigated. The results show that the bagasse ash recalcination at 600 °C and the selection of the particles under a diameter limit (between 45 and 63 µm) improve its reactivity. Blended with slaked lime, the composed binder obtained with these parameters is likely to develop a compressive strength higher than 39 MPa at 28 days; this value is higher than the compressive strength of pouzzolanic material and lime based binder studied in the literature. In addition, due to the lower alkalinity of the interstitial solution of this composed binder, related to the lime consumption by the pouzzolanic material, it better protects vegetable materials from mineralization than the binders based on Portland cement. The incorporation of the cellulosic pulps in the composed binder lime-bagasse ash produces composite materials with a similar flexural behaviour as a composite made with cement and cellulosic pulp
