Abstract:
This chapter is about the state of inequality and poverty in Europe. We observe differences in poverty rates and income inequality across European countries. At the one extreme, there are the Benelux and Nordic countries with little poverty and small inequalities. At the other extreme, there is a mixed group consisting of Southern, Eastern, and Anglo- Saxon countries. Changes in poverty and inequality over time have been rather small. A number of reliable signals, such as aging and restrictive public finance point to an increase of poverty and inequality in the near future. Finally, we show th

Abstract:
The theory of inequality measurement can be founded on a few very simple principles concerning the comparison of income distributions. This chapter discusses the standard principles and the types of inequality indices that follow from them. It shows how these principles and indices can be related to conventional approaches to social-welfare analysis. Adjusting a few pieces within this same framework enables one to derive alternative, novel types of inequality indices and lays the basis for commonly-used types of poverty indices. The chapter also covers other general approaches to distributiona

Abstract:
Abstract Over the past 50 years, economic inequality and poverty have become central to public debates. The literature on economic inequality and poverty has been vastly expanded to develop new methods and generate new applications. This book provides a rigorous analysis of inequality and poverty, focusing on how income inequality and poverty measurements have evolved in the past 50 years. It has also attempted to resolve some of the controversies. The book’s primary focus is on analyzing the relationships among individuals’ or households’ distributions of economic variables. These relationshi
