Deveaux, Monique. Poverty, Solidarity, and Poor-Led Social Movements. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190850289.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Poor-led social movements seek to transform the structures that exclude, subordinate, and exploit people who live in poverty. The people in these movements know that durable poverty reduction ultimately depends upon the social and political empowerment of the poor. Yet despite the paradigm-shifting contributions of poor activists, their insights and visions of poverty eradication have been largely neglected in philosophical responses to poverty, which focus instead on the obligations of individuals and institutions in affluent states. The erasure of people living in poverty as central agents of justice puts normative theorists out of step with progressive, pro-poor approaches to poverty reduction and development, and with research on the important role of grassroots social movements in these processes. From rural landless workers in Brazil, to urban shack dwellers in South Africa, to unemployed workers impoverished by neoliberal economic policies in Argentina, poor-led organizations and movements advance a more political understanding of poverty—and of what is needed to eradicate it. Addressed primarily to political theorists and philosophers, this book shows how these groups develop the political consciousness and collective capabilities of poor communities, and help to create the basis for solidaristic action among poor populations. Defending the idea of a political responsibility for solidarity, Deveaux shows how nonpoor outsiders can help to advance a transformative anti-poverty agenda by supporting the efforts of poor-led social movements.

Soltau, Frederiech. Common Concern of Humankind. Edited by Kevin R. Gray, Richard Tarasofsky, and Cinnamon Carlarne. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199684601.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the various common concerns of humankind. The concept has found its most explicit reference in relation to climate change, in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the conservation of biological diversity in the Convention on Biological Diversity. It encompasses aspects of the global environment that, by virtue of their significance and the need for collective action to protect them, have been designated as common concern of humanity, either in treaties or through decisions of the United Nations General Assembly. The concept has, over the years, been the subject of considerable scholarship. Without delving into a discussion of customary law, this chapter proceeds on the basis that the common concern of humankind can reasonably be described as a principle of international environmental law against the interlinked backdrop of poverty eradication, economic development, energy availability and use, and climate change.

Bonakele, Tembinkosi. The Case for a BRICS Competition Agenda. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198810674.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
The competition policy discourse has been greatly defined by the developed and industrialized countries of the world. However, citizens in developing countries demand that competition policy delivers both efficiency and development. This chapter argues that the network of BRICS competition agencies should place the need to interrogate the role of competition policy in challenging social environments (particularly, poverty, inequality, and unemployment) of developing countries firmly on the global agenda. To do so will require a plan of action to further strengthen cooperation and coordination beyond bi-annual gatherings among BRICS competition agencies, in order to yield more effective remedies and approaches.

Cerra, Valerie, Barry Eichengreen, Asmaa El-Ganainy, and Martin Schindler, eds. How to Achieve Inclusive Growth. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192846938.001.0001.

Abstract:
Rising inequality and widespread poverty, social unrest and polarization, gender and ethnic disparities, declining social mobility, economic fragility, unbalanced growth due to technology and globalization, and existential danger from climate change are urgent global concerns of our day. These issues are intertwined. They therefore require a holistic framework to examine their interplay and bring the various strands together. This book brings together leading academic economists and experts from several international institutions to explain the sources and scale of these challenges. The book summarizes a wide array of empirical evidence and country experiences, lays out practical policy solutions, and devises a comprehensive and unified plan of action for combatting these economic and social disparities. This authoritative book is accessible to policy makers, students, and the general public interested in how to craft a brighter future by building a sustainable, green, and inclusive society in the years ahead.

Chronic Care for Neglected Infectious Diseases: Leprosy/Hansen's Disease, Lymphatic Filariasis, Trachoma, and Chagas Disease. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275122501.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2016, PAHO's Directing Council, through Resolution CD55.R9, approved the “Plan of Action for Elimination of Neglected Infectious Diseases (NID) and Post-Elimination Actions, 2016-2022.” This Resolution urges Member States to implement a set of interventions to reduce the burden of disease by NID in the Americas by 2022, including “…support promotion of treatment, rehabilitation, and related support services through an approach focused on integrated morbidity management and disability prevention for individuals and families afflicted by those neglected infectious diseases that cause disability and generate stigma.” NIDs can have devastating chronic sequelae for patients, such as disability, visible change or loss in body structure, loss of tissue, and impairment of proper tissue and organ function, among others. All of these can in turn lead to unjustified discrimination, stigmatization, mental health problems, and partial or total incapacity to work, perpetuating the vicious cycle of neglected diseases as both a consequence and a cause of poverty. Patients with chronic conditions caused by NIDs require proper health care in order to prevent further damage and improve their living and social conditions. This should be provided at the primary health care level, as patients suffering from NIDs are often unable to travel to or afford to pay for specialized care services. Care for patients suffering from chronic morbidity caused by NID should be integrated into care for other chronic conditions caused by non-communicable diseases. This manual provides a framework for morbidity management and disability prevention of patients affected by NIDs and gives specific guidance for the proper care of patients suffering from chronic conditions caused by lymphatic filariasis, leprosy, trachoma, and Chagas disease. It is intended to be used mainly by health care workers at the primary health care level, but health workers at more complex and specialized levels may also find it useful.
