In the region of Uppland, a shortage of electric power during cold days has emerged during the past years by virtue of the electrification of the society and industry in general. As a result, a power flexibility market managed by the CoordiNet project has commenced to hopefully create a more reliant, eco-friendly and accessible electricity supply. Uppsala kommun wishes to participate in the market but needs a solution for communication between market and technology and smart control methods. In this project, the solution to the problem, consisting of a mobile app, API, database, server and deep learning model, almost meets the requirements to participate on the market this autumn. With more time and resources, the product can hopefully be completed, enabling both economic and city growth in the region.

Elkonsumtion är ett ämne med både personliga och globala ändamål. Det gynnar den privata ekonomin likväl som miljöbelastningen. För att spara el är det fördelaktigt om man förstå mekanismerna i elförbrukningen. De senaste åren har det skapats både hårdvara och mjukvara för att överblicka elförbrukningen i detalj än bara den totala energiförbrukningen. Studerar man varje elektrisk apparats förbrukning över till exempel ett år ökas därmed insikten om hur hushållets energiförbrukning är fördelad. En app har designats för att presentera denna information. Användare får gå igenom appen för att sedan testas för att se om de kan förstå och använda appen. Testerna visar att användarna har ökat sin förståelse genom visualiseringen av datan som presenteras i appen.<br>Consumption of electricity is a subject with both personal and global purposes. Reducing the use of power is positive both for the private finances and the environment. In order to make such a reduction, it is helpful to understand how the electricity is spent. In the recent years both hardware and software solutions to display more detailed information on an individual’s consumption than just their total use. If they could see how much their devices use and how their usage levels changes over a year, they might increase their understanding of how they spend their electricity. An app has been designed to show this information. Users can then use the app for a while before being tested with questions that can only be answered correctly by using the app. These tests do show that the users have increased their understanding of their electricity consumption

In recent years, there has been extended research on the Big Five and social media, especially Facebook. Snapchat, a fast-growing photo-sharing app, has however not been thoroughly researched yet. This paper aimed at closing this research gap and at investigating the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and Snapchat users and nonusers. Additionally, it researched the potential of the app to advertise new music published by music labels. The sample consisted of 124 self-selected Snapchat users and non-users (94 Snapchat users and 30 Snapchat non-users), between the ages of 18 and 55. Approximately 53% of the participants were from Sweden, 24% from Germany and the rest from other countries. Participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire comprising the Big Five Inventory and demographic questions. Snapchat users also completed a Snapchat usage questionnaire. Additionally, a short interview about Snapchat was held with a representative of a music label. The results showed that there are only minor differences between Snapchat users and non-users regarding the Big Five personality traits. However, male Snapchat users tend to be more open to new experiences. The usage of specific Snapchat features could be connected to more extraverted, neurotic and conscientious individuals. The overall interest for musicrelated content on Snapchat was rather low. Therefore, Snapchat can be used as a complementary marketing action to raise awareness, but cannot stand alone.<br>Under de senaste åren har det gjorts utökad forskning om Big Five och sociala medier, särskilt Facebook. Snapchat, en snabb växande bilddelning app, har dock inte undersökts noggrant. Detta examensarbete syftade till att undersöka det outforskade området kring förhållandet mellan Big Five personlighetsdrag och Snapchat-användare och icke- användare. Dessutom undersökte den möjligheten för skivbolag att annonsera ny musik i appen. Urvalet bestod av 124 självvalda Snapchat-användare och icke-användare (94 Snapchat-användare och 30 Snapchat-icke-användare), mellan 18 och 55 år. Ungefär 53% av deltagarna var från Sverige, 24% från Tyskland och resten från andra länder. Deltagarna blev ombedda att fylla i ett online frågeformulär som omfattade Big Five Inventory och demografiska frågor. Snapchat-användare slutförde också ett Snapchat-användningsformulär. Dessutom hölls en kort intervju om Snapchat med en representant från ett skivbolag. Resultaten visade att det endast finns mindre skillnader mellan Snapchatanvändare och icke-användare angående Big Five-personlighetsdragen. Manliga Snapchat-användare tenderar att vara mer öppna för nya upplevelser. Användningen av specifika Snapchat-funktioner kan kopplas till mer extravert, neurotiska och samvetsgranna individer. Det övergripande intresset för musikrelaterat innehåll på Snapchat var ganska lågt. Därför kan Snapchat användas som en kompletterande marknadsföringsåtgärd för att öka medvetenheten, men inte som enda marknadsföringsåtgärd.

There is an ongoing debate by people in the industry whether to make native or web applications. These discussions mostly surround issues about development costs, user experience and capabilities. Another aspect of this debate is the fact that mobile devices have varying hardware specifications which is another factor to consider when making this decision. What we want to shed some light on is how performance is affected on the device when using these two different approaches of application development. The use of CPU/RAM and Energy is our primary concern and in our experiment we measure these values on two similar applications where one uses Nested Layouts and the other a WebView. The experiment was made on three different devices with varying specifications. What we found was that Web applications have a bigger impact on overall performance and because of this use more battery. While the debate certainly won't come to a close with results they are conclusive when it comes to the topic of performance and will be of value to developers who are concerned about it.

Abstract: A qualitative research study, aimed at exploring the wounded healer and the way in which this historic archetype is applied to the modern day therapist's personal and professional development and practice. The literature that has been published has provided various hypotheses about the influences of being a wounded healer on both the therapist and the work carried out with the client. The claims made however are not conclusive and there appeared to be very few empirical studies to support them. The aim of this study was to explore 'The Therapeutic Use of the Self: The Personal and Professional Journey of the Wounded Healer", so as to give a voice to those who identify as wounded healers and may be considered as a marginalised and disempowered group. A sample of eight participants were used, a combination of psychotherapists and psychologists. Data collection was carried out in the form of one-ta-one semi-structured, open-ended interviews which were then analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Five master-themes were identified with associated sub-themes. The findings indicate that personal experiences inform professional practice. There appeared to be both contributions made to and barriers existing in, the participants' professional worlds when it was chosen to work in a way that involved drawing from their own suffering and woundedness to inform their practice. These seemed to be mediated by the context in which the participants found themselves. The study makes a case for the theory that the therapists' own suffering and woundedness can be a great strength and a resource in their work with clients and can facilitate healing in both the client and the therapist

Dentro de la industria de servicios energéticos, las empresas que operan bajo el modelo ESCO se caracterizan principalmente por dirigir íntegramente un proyecto de eficiencia energética en las instalaciones del cliente, incluyendo una auditoría energética, propuestas técnicas, propuestas de financiamiento, instalación y mantenimiento de equipamiento tecnológico y monitoreo de ahorros energéticos logrados. En relación al sector servicios energéticos a la cual pertenece C&C Power Technologies, este se encuentra inmersa en un contexto en donde los desafíos en el ámbito de la energía a nivel nacional son relevantes. A nivel país estamos frente a múltiples y complejos retos que exigen soluciones eficientes: el crecimiento en la demanda de energía, la dependencia energética, el cambio climático y la expansión del sistema eléctrico, entre otros. Frente a todos estos desafíos, la eficiencia energética surge como una solución factible y sustentable para nuestro país. Al respecto, muchas empresas han comenzado a responder a esta necesidad en dicho ámbito, es así como se ha ido consolidando la industria de servicios energéticos, cuyos esfuerzos se han orientado en alcanzar mayores niveles de eficiencia energética en los diversos rubros económicos. De esta forma, la eficiencia energética es parte de la solución, ya que disminuye el consumo de energía del país, reduce la dependencia de los energéticos importados, aumenta la seguridad de suministro y disminuye las emisiones de gases efecto invernadero. Adicionalmente, contribuye a incrementar la competitividad del país, al haber menores costos de producción. La idea de desarrollar este proyecto nace fundamentalmente como una respuesta a necesidades concretas al interior de las empresas, particularmente en relación al alza sostenido del precio de las distintas fuentes energéticas, lo cual incide directamente en la necesidad de las empresas para bajar sus costos productivos, así como también a la necesidad de lograr mayores niveles de responsabilidad social empresarial, mediante la menor emisión de elementos contaminantes hacia el medioambiente.
Los servicios que C&C Power Technologies pretende comercializar en el mercado son: i) auditorías energéticas; ii) consultorías en eficiencia energética, e; iii) implementación de proyectos de eficiencia energética. El modelo de negocios que se quiere implementar en C&C Power Technologies va más allá de limitarse a entregar un diagnóstico energético a sus clientes tal como lo hace la mayor parte de las empresas consultoras en el ámbito de la eficiencia energética establecidas en el país. Este modelo ofrece soluciones prácticas y con un alto valor agregado dado que se ofrece llevar a cabo la dirección integra de proyectos de eficiencia energética, asegurando resultados en términos de ahorros energéticos a ser logrados. Es por esto que el modelo de negocios de C&C Power Technologies posee un mayor atractivo en relación a otros tipos de proyectos que en la actualidad se comercializan en el ámbito de la eficiencia energética, en donde la implementación y monitoreo de los resultados finalmente queda a cargo del cliente.
Dentro del plan financiero, se da a conocer el VAN esperado de la empresa, el cual asciende a $418.820.330 (TIR 75,2%). With the increased loading and exploitation of the power transmission system and also due to improved optimised operation, the problem of voltage stability and voltage collapse attracts more and more attention . A voltage collapse can take place in systems or subsystems and can appear quite abruptly. Continuous monitoring of the system state is therefore required. The cause of the 1977 New York black out has been proved to be the reactive power problem. The 1987 Tokyo black out was believed to be due to reactive power shortage and to a voltage collapse at summer peak load. These facts have strongly indicated that reactive power planning and dispatching play an important role in the security of modern power systems. A proper compensation of system voltage profiles will enhance the system securities in the operation and will reduce system losses. In this thesis, some aspects of reactive power dispatch and voltage control problem have been investigated. The research has focused on the following three issues: Firstly, the steady-state stability problem has been tackled where, a voltage collapse proximity indicator based on the optimal impedance solution of a two bus system has been generalised to an actual system and the performance of this indicator has been investigated over the whole range (stable and unstable region) to see how useful this indicator can be for an operator at any operating point. Then we went further to implement a linear reactive power dispatch algorithm in which this indicator was used for the first time to attempt to prevent a voltage collapse in the system. Secondly, a new efficient technique for N-1 security has been incorporated aiming at either maximising the reactive power reserve margin for the generators or minimising active power losses during normal as well as outage conditions (single line outage) .The reactive power redistribution after an outage is based on the S-E graph adopted by Phadke and Spong[72].Thirdly, the dispatch (N-1 security excluded) has been incorporated on line in the O.C.E.P.S. control package to improve the quality of the service and system security by optimally controlling the generator voltages (potentially the reactive control system is able to control transformers, switchable capacitors and reactors). A new function called load voltage control (similar to the load frequency control function) has been introduced to allow smooth variation of the reactive control signals towards their targets.

This thesis explores the concepts of power, performativity and place and how these act to produce non-heterosexual women's everyday lives through practices of 'othering'. The thesis explores three feminist poststructural tenets: that everyday life is saturated in power; that identities and bodies are (re )formed through reiterated performances (performativity); and that place is fluid and (re )produced through performativity and power. These tenets are used to explore 28 non-heterosexual women's accounts of their everyday lives. These accounts were formed using six focus groups, three coupled interviews, 23 individual interviews, 22 diaries and six sets of auto-photography. The thesis contextualises these research methods within discourses of feminist methodologies which understand accounts of research as partial, performative and as formed in spaces of betweeness. The concepts, tenets, methodologies and accounts that make up the thesis are understood as mutually (in)forming and not as discrete entities. The thesis considers participants' experiences of heterosexism and genderism. Particular focus is placed on everyday processes of othering in food consumption spaces; how women live with these processes; women's experiences of being mistaken for men; and the (re )formation of place through fantasies and imaginings. Through these explorations the thesis deconstructs dualisms, dichotomies and binaries, contending that everyday life is fonned across and between these boundaries whilst hegemonic power relations are simultaneously (re)performed to maintain heterosexuality and normative femininities 'in place'. Relations of power and performativities render place (in terms of both sites and processes) fluid, (in)forming non-heterosexual women's bodies, identities and places as 'other' in relation to dominant (heterosexual) codes and norms. Discourses of power do not have to be named in order to be materially experienced and this thesis discusses the everyday use of the term 'it' in lieu of words, such as heterosexism and genderism. Moreover, hegemonic heterosexual and gendered codes and norms are diversely (re )made through relations of power and performativities. The thesis concludes by contending that whilst power relations can be theorised as fluid over time, everyday life is often lived as though power is a fixed structure.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1998.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 30-31).<br>During the late 1980's and early 1990's, Real Estate Investment Trust ("REITs") accumulated large portfolios of properties. During this period, REITs were able to grow through acquisitions alone, arbitraging their low cost of capital relative to private asset valuations. This changed the real estate industry and for the first time, real estate entities have concentrated ownership in an industry traditionally characterized by fractionalized ownership. Today, there is tremendous pressure from the public markets for REITs to continue to grow. This has lead the management of REITs to seek alternative growth strategies. These strategies include cost economies of scale, branding, growth of non-real estate related revenue, vertical integration, and exertion of market power. This thesis studies market power in real estate, focusing specifically on whether REITs are currently exerting market power. The first part of the paper reviews the economic theory of market power and the antitrust laws. Economic concepts such as elasticity of supply, elasticity of demand, barriers to entry and market contestability are examined in a real estate context. The thesis begins with a general introduction to switched-mode power conversion. The main application areas of the technique are outlined and a summary is presented of current research work. The following chapters then focus on one recent development in the field, the Cuk converter and integrated magnetics. First, the steady-state performance limitations of the Cuk converter are explored through a comparison with the basic switched-mode converter topologies. The circuit is seen to possess several attractive properties including input and output current waveforms which are continuous rather than pulsating. However, the switching losses are shown to be high. A regenerative snubber is presented which reduces the transistor turn-off loss whilst preserving the high-quality input and output current waveforms of the converter. The integrated magnetics technique is discussed in the following chapter. This is the technique whereby converter magnetic components are coupled to eliminate input and output ripple currents and therefore improve steady-state performance. The possible problems are highlighted of attempting to couple transformers and inductors on a single core and an alternative coupling technique is outlined which uses an auxiliary electric circuit. The introduction of magnetic coupling in the Cuk converter to eliminate input and output ripple currents and improve steady-state performance results in more complicated dynamic characteristics and a more complex control problem. The state-space averaging technique is used in chapter 4 with the aid of a control engineering design package, CLADP, to analyse the problem. The impact of component coupling on the converter dynamic characteristics is explained and possible control strategies are suggested and verified. Finally, the Cuk converter with component coupling is assessed as a large-signal waveshaper. Several inverter configurations are examined in which a switched-mode converter operating under closed-loop control is used as a waveshaper to synthesise high-quality sinusoidal output currents. The implementation of the schemes using a Cuk converter with component coupling is described.

The Turkish TSO (TEIAS) has been leading a project that aims the synchronous interconnected operation of the Turkish Power System and the ENTSO-E CESA (former UCTE) System. For this purpose, this study concentrates on the specific problems related to the electromechanical systems of large size hydroelectric power plants regarding low frequency inter area oscillations, which are prone to occur once the interconnected operation is established. The expected frequency of inter area oscillations after interconnected operation is close to 0.15 Hz, which is in the frequency range of the speed governing structures of turbines, as explained in the first two sections of the thesis. In the third section, the nonlinear turbine governor model used throughout the study is explained. In the following part, the governor parameter tuning study with regard to the defined performance objectives is explained. Afterwards, the effect of the retuned governor settings of the sample hydroelectric power plants on a simple multi machine power system is shown. Following that, the system wide effect of removing the sources of negative damping, which are strongly dependent on the governor settings of the major hydroelectric power plants of the Turkish Power System, is shown. In the final part, conclusions are made on the operation of the hydroelectric power plants regarding the frequency stability of the system after synchronous interconnected operation of the Turkish Power System and the ENTSO-E CESA System.

The proliferation of wireless ad-hoc networks especially wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b Standard) in the commercial market in recent years has reached a critical mass. The adoption and strong support of wireless IEEE 802.11 standard, coupled with the consequent decline in costs, has made wireless LAN deployment as one of the fastest growth area in communication access technology. With the ever increasing use of wireless LAN technology the various networks are reaching their full capacity in terms of network throughput, number of users and interference level in the wireless channel.
In this thesis work I propose to the use smart antenna technology and a power management scheme in the wireless ad-hoc networks to increase the network capacity in terms of throughput, number of simultaneous communication and to lower the average transmit power and consequently co-channel interference. Power management scheme can be used to maximize the power efficiency of the transmitter by choosing an optimum transmit power level. Smart antenna or adaptive antenna array technology has reached a level of sophistication that it is feasible to use it on small mobile terminals like handheld PDA, LAPTOP and other mobile devices with limited battery power.
The simulation results of various ad â hoc network scenario shows that there are significant gains to be had if these technologies can be integrated in the existing wireless LAN physical layer and/or in the standard them self. Smart antennas along with slight modification in channel access scheme reduce co-channel interference dramatically and increases the number of simultaneous transmissions hence improves network throughput. Power management algorithm is shown to improve average transmission of a node.
We present a mathematical framework to characterize the outage probability of cellular mobile radio system with selective co-channel interference receiver in overloaded array environments. The mathematical framework outlines a general numerical procedure for computing the probability of outage of a cellular mobile radio system that is equipped with a smart antenna to suppress a few strongest co-channel interferers (CCI) out of a total of NI active interferers by null steering.<br>Master of Science

This thesis presents three essays on the motives for mergers and the determinants of U.S. horizontal merger antitrust case selection. These essays contribute to the debate on whether mergers increase social welfare and on the efficiency of antitrust intervention. The first essay explores the market power motive for horizontal mergers by examining the relation between the announcement wealth effects to merging firms and their reliant corporate customers. Large sample studies generally conclude that efficiency considerations drive horizontal mergers and find little market power, which implies a non-negative wealth effect relation between these two parties along the supply chain. When I examine the endogenous stock market reactions to merger announcements with instrumentation, however, my results overturn this inference: I find that greater abnormal returns to merging firms systematically relate to lower abnormal returns to reliant customers. This wealth transfer effect exists for deals in industries with little foreign competition but not for deals in industries with intense foreign competition. These results suggest that increased market power is a key driver of horizontal mergers. In the second essay, I investigate the determinants of U.S. antitrust invention by examining horizontal merger antitrust case selection in the U.S. manufacturing sector during 1980-2009. I find no evidence supporting the consumer protection claim of the government's antitrust agencies. Instead, I find that the likelihood of antitrust intervention is negatively related to foreign import pressure. Hitting a market concentration hurdle criterion also predicts intervention. In addition, industry rivals seem able to exert pressure for antitrust intervention to avoid a competitive disadvantage. I identify two rival groups that account for the demand for antitrust regulation, local rivals and rivals producing less specialised products. The third essay examines the motives for related mergers from the perspective of product market similarity. Using Hoberg and Phillips' (2014) text-based product similarity measure, I find that when an acquirer's product is more similar to those of its rivals, a related merger results in a greater post-merger product price and lower market share for the combined firm. Moreover, for related mergers in more homogenous product markets, the stock market reactions to the merger announcement are higher for the combined firm and for product market rivals, but lower for reliant corporate customers. Overall, the evidence on both product market real performance and stock market reactions is consistent with the wealth transfer effect of related mergers, and suggests that the primary motive for firms to merge with product market competitors is to gain market power rather than to achieve efficiencies.

Brightness scaling of diode-bar end-pumped solid-state lasers producing efficient output radiation in the 2 μm wavelength region is investigated. Problems and strategies for power scaling diode-bar end-pumped lasers in the 2μm region are also discussed. Thermal lens measure ments on Tm3+:YAG and Tm3+:(Lu,Y)AG were made. Thermal lens dependency on resonator loss is observed and attributed to heating from upconversion. High-power room temperature diode-bar end-pumped Tm3+:(Lu,Y)AG were developed. Efficient high power operation of the Tm3+:YAG laser producing 14.2W of output power at 2.013μm for 53.4W of incident pump power is demonstrated with M(2) values of 1.3 in orthogonal planes. The laser was then linearly polarised and compared with a similar laser using a scheme to compensate for the loss caused by thermally induced de-polarisation. Before the de-polarisation loss prevented lasing operation an output power of 8.4W was observed. Using the compensation scheme, the laser produced 11.5W of output power and was limited by pump power. The uncompensated de-polarisation loss was >5% reducing to <0.4% for the compensated laser. A high power Tm3+:(Lu,Y)AG laser producing 18W of output power at 2.022μm was demonstrated and compared with a Tm3+:YAG laser. High-power intracavity pumped Ho3+:YAG lasers were developed. A collinearly intracavity pumped Ho3+:YAG laser producing 8.4W of output power is demonstrated though application of the brightness scaling strategy was difficult to implement. A non-collinearly intracavity pumped laser showing 1.6W of output power is reported but showed alignment instability and was hard to replicate. Intracavity pumping schemes are discussed. A Tm3+:silica fibre laser produced 14.2W of output at 1.98μm for 38.3W of launched pump power with a slope efficiency of ~36%. This was the highest reported power from a Tm3+:silica fibre laser to the author's knowledge. A tunable Tm3+ fibre laser showed > 1.8W output power across a tuned wavelength range of 1870-2030 nm.

representação do poder transcendental. Ao final do reinado
de Luís XIV, surgiu
um discurso histórico-político que, após revelar as
múltiplas nações que lutam sob
o Estado, autodialetizou-se quando, ao reivindicar uma
função totalizadora, o
Terceiro Estado retomou, de certa maneira, a tese
monárquica onde a nação
residia inteiramente na pessoa do rei. Esse movimento
explicaria uma certa
continuidade do discurso visual do poder - dos portraits
monárquicos aos
republicanos - por um lado e, por outro, a multiplicidade
das formas de
resistência: os cartazes políticos de maio de 68 foram a
expressão das diversas
nações contestadoras dos poderes e saberes constituídos
daquele momento,
manifestando o desejo de proximidade social e de renovação
política através de
elementos próximos da estética carnavalesca. Na transição
contemporânea de uma
soberania moderna para uma soberania imperial, a crise
político-estético entre
transcendência e imanência perdura. Por um lado, monarquia
e aristocracia
imperial apresentam a unidade transcendental através de
recursos estéticos

encontramos expressões
estéticas que se afastam radicalmente das representações
do poder e que
denominamos manifestações de potência a partir da
definição sociológica, política
e ontológica de multidão.<br>Louis XIV´s iconography was an example of sovereignty
representation in
which the spatial separation and the perfect finishing of
figures reflected the social
and political organization that produced it. However,
outside the Church and the
State, aesthetic expressions opposed to transcendental
representation were
developed all along modern times. At the end of Louis
XIV´s reign arose a
historical-political discourse that, after revealing the
multiple nations which
fought under the State, dialectized itself when the Thiers-
États, in the process
of claiming a totalizing function, resumed to a certain
extent the monarchic thesis
in which the nation dwells entirely in the person of the
king. This movement
would explain on the one hand, a certain continuity of the
visual discourse of
power - from the monarchic to the republican portraits -
and, on the other hand,
the multiplicity forms of resistance: the May 1968
political posters were the
expression of the diverse nations, contestant of the
powers and knowledge
constituted at that moment, and displayed the desire of
social proximity and
political renewal, through elements close to the aesthetic
of Carnival. In the
contemporary transition from a modern sovereignty to an
imperial one, a politicalaesthetic
crisis between transcendentalism and immanentism subsists.
On the one
hand, monarchy and imperial aristocracy introduce the
transcendental unity
through similar aesthetic resources. On the other hand, in
the Empire third level,
we find aesthetic expresions which fundamentally deviate
from the
representations of power and which we designate display of
potential power from
the sociological, political and ontological definition of
multitude.

In this work, we evaluate aggressive undervolting, i.e., voltage underscaling below the nominal level to reduce the energy consumption of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Usually, voltage guardbands are added by chip vendors to ensure the worst-case process and environmental scenarios. Through experimenting on several FPGA architectures,
we con¿rm a large voltage guardband for several FPGA components, which in turn, delivers signi¿cant power savings. However, further undervolting below the voltage guardband may cause reliability issues as the result of the circuit delay increase, and faults might start
to appear. We extensively characterize the behavior of these faults in terms of the rate, location, type, as well as sensitivity to environmental temperature, primarily focusing on FPGA on-chip memories, or Block RAMs (BRAMs). Understanding this behavior can allow to deploy ef¿cient mitigation techniques, and in turn, FPGA-based designs can be improved for better energy, reliability, and performance trade-offs.
Finally, as a case study, we evaluate a typical FPGA-based Neural Network (NN) accelerator when the FPGA voltage is underscaled. In consequence, the substantial NN energy savings come with the cost of NN accuracy loss. To attain power savings without NN accuracy loss below the voltage guardband gap, we proposed an application-aware technique and we also, evaluated the built-in Error-Correcting Code (ECC) mechanism. Hence, First, we developed an application-dependent BRAMs placement technique that relies on the deterministic behavior of undervolting faults, and mitigates these faults by mapping the most reliability sensitive NN parameters to BRAM blocks that are relatively more resistant to undervolting faults. Second, as a more general technique, we applied the built-in ECC of BRAMs and observed a signi¿cant fault coverage capability thanks to the behavior of undervolting faults, with a negligible power consumption overhead.<br>En este trabajo, evaluamos el reducir el voltaje en forma agresiva, es decir, bajar la tensión por debajo del nivel nominal para reducir el consumo de energía en Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). Por lo general, los vendedores de chips establecen margen de seguridad al voltaje para garantizar el funcionamiento de los mismos en el peor de los casos y en los peores escenarios ambientales. Mediante la experimentación en varias arquitecturas FPGA, confirmamos que hay un margen de seguridad de voltaje grande en varios de los componentes de la FPGA, que a su vez, nos ofrece ahorros de energía significativos. Sin embargo, un trabajar a un voltaje por debajo del margen de seguridad del voltaje puede causar problemas de confiabilidad a medida ya que aumenta el retardo del circuito y pueden comenzar a aparecer fallos. Caracterizamos ampliamente el comportamiento de estos fallos en términos de velocidad, ubicación, tipo, así como la sensibilidad a la temperatura ambiental, centrándonos principalmente en memorias internas de la FPGA, o Block RAM (BRAM). Comprender este comportamiento puede permitir el desarrollo de técnicas eficientes de mitigación y, a su vez, mejorar los diseños basados en FPGA para obtener ahorros en energía, una mayor confiabilidad y un mayor rendimiento. Finalmente, como caso de estudio, evaluamos un acelerador típico de Redes Neuronales basado en FPGA cuando el voltaje de la FPGA esta por debajo del nivel mínimo de seguridad. En consecuencia, los considerables ahorros de energía de la red neuronal vienen asociados con la pérdida de precisión de la red neuronal. Para obtener ahorros de energía sin una pérdida de precisión en la red neuronal por debajo del margen de seguridad del voltaje, proponemos una técnica que tiene en cuenta la aplicación, asi mismo, evaluamos el mecanismo integrado en las BRAMs de Error Correction Code (ECC). Por lo tanto, en primer lugar, desarrollamos una técnica de colocación de BRAM dependiente de la aplicación que se basa en el comportamiento determinista de las fallos cuando la FPGA funciona por debajo del margen de seguridad, y se mitigan estos fallos asignando los parámetros de la red neuronal más sensibles a producir fallos a los bloques BRAM que son relativamente más resistentes a los fallos. En segundo lugar, como técnica más general, aplicamos el ECC incorporado de los BRAM y observamos una capacidad de cobertura de fallos significativo gracias a las características de comportamiento de fallos, con una sobrecoste de consumo de energía insignificante

The research presented in this thesis has led to several new pre-processing techniques that enhance side-channel analysis of near-field electromagnetic (EM) and power analysis waveforms. Three new power spectral density analysis techniques have been introduced, the sliding window, the overlapping window and the variable window methods. These approaches pre-process the information in the time-shift invariant frequency domain, overcoming issues of misalignment due to acquisition error or random insertion type countermeasures. A new pattern analysis technique, that models the charge and decay profiles of AES power consumption traces, has been shown to defeat a random clocking countermeasure. The individual rounds of the algorithm are identified, enabling the targeted round to be extracted from each trace. A further optimisation is demonstrated using a round separation metric to identify prior rounds where a sufficient power consumption decay has occurred, resulting in a further reduction in the number of traces required. The attack therefore overcomes the effects of the temporal misalignment and round amplitude variation caused by the random clocking countermeasure. The novel application of a DSP implementation of a phase-sensitive detector circuit has enabled the pre-processing of side-channel information to enhance the round patterns of an AES algorithm for the purposes of re-alignment and cryptographic signature extraction. The identification of locations on a device where the encryption signature is more readily visible, leads to a more efficient targeting of attacks in a side-channel cartography attack.

Introduction: This thesis completed a genealogical enquiry which considered how dementia has been conceptualised historically and contextually, plus the conditions that have allowed for the emergence of certain dementia discourses over others. It explored how dementia has generated biomedical, neuro, psychological, pharmaceutical, technological, charitable and academic forces that in turn, produce and maintain the power of these forces, plus the dominant biomedical model of dementia. It also examined the role of family and marriage in the context of dementia. Method: Drawing upon Foucault’s work and discourse theory, professionally produced leaflets from dementia assessment clinics and NICE (2006) guidelines for dementia were examined. Secondly, participants with diagnoses of Dementia (PWDD) and their spouse were interviewed either jointly or separately (ten participants in total). Ten transcripts were analysed from a discourse theory perspective. Results: The document analysis presented various discursive themes, which corroborated the findings in the transcript analysis. From the transcripts, nine main discourses were identified. For instance, ‘the feared fate’ constructed the inescapability of dementia in old age relating to dementia facts and figures. ‘Pay no mind’ involved paying little attention to dementia and setting dementia talk aside. ‘The biomedical truth of dementia’ depicted professional technologies as ‘truths’ supporting the biomedical origins of dementia. Spouses with and without diagnoses of dementia tended to adopt dissimilar discourses, resulting in spouses monitoring and correcting PWDD and PWDD’s resistance. Marriage discourses constructed the importance of marriage and the need to overcome trials and tribulations. Discussion: Unexpected findings in the data were strongly gendered discourses, plus, where spouses without dementia were positioned in the role of the ‘informal professional’ yet also ‘the confessing patient’. Marriage discourses appeared to be complimentary in making marriage a natural sphere for caring. Biomedical discourse on dementia was effective in self-management of dementia ‘signs’ and electing ‘ethically bound’ spousal support, effective as a modern form of power where there are limited societal resources.
