Miles, Lesley Margaret Pears. "Masculinity, power, sexual negotiation and AIDS : a discourse analysis." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13490.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 57-63.
This study focusses on the relationship between masculinity, power, sexuality and AIDS. It examines how discursive positioning within discourses of sexuality and masculinity affects the way heterosexual men negotiate safer sex. Four groups of sexually active men aged 17-28 were constituted to discuss masculinity, sexual negotiation and AIDS. A vignette was used to prompt discussion. The resulting audio-taped leaderless men-only group discussions were analysed, using Hallway's interpretative discourse analysis, which draws on a. post-structuralist theory of discourse, especially as articulated by Foucault. In the accounts, it appeared that, firstly, the sexual drive discourse and male sexual drive discourse; and secondly, the discourses of sexual performance and potency, a.re the discourses offering subject positions which most directly impede the practice of safer sex. Negotiating safer sex interrupts· the impetus of the "passion" of the sexual drive. Further, it threatens the imperatives of successful "performance" which entail erection, penetration, ejaculation, and responsibility for the woman's orgasm. Rationalisations for avoiding negotiating safer sex were also offered within the discourses of mood-breaking, trust/mistrust, and stigma. Discourses present tended to embody a.n ideology of male dominance within the sexual sphere, reinforcing theories which suggest that gendered power relations in society present a. major stumbling block to safer sex. Although discourses were similar across the groups, there were contradictory discourses within the groups which were voiced by particular individuals. It is suggested that core requirements of HIV education for men would be, firstly, depictions of alternative versions of masculinity and images of sexual practice which incorporated shared responsibility and questioned the "naturalness" of dominant constructions of heterosexuality; and secondly, the provision of safe spaces in which men may be able to reflexively explore their own sexuality and begin to imagine new ways of experiencing sexual relationships.

Patterson, David. "Power, Resources and Environmental Negotiation in Community Sport Organizations." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32769.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sought to examine power, resources and environmental negotiation through an examination of the operations and governance of two Community Sport Organizations (CSOs) located in a mid-sized city in the Midwest region of the United States. This was undertaken by answering three research questions: (1) How does power shape the allocation of resources within CSOs? (2) How do CSOs secure access to resources from their organizational environments? and (3) How do CSOs attempt to manipulate their organizational environment? The dissertation took a case study approach, combining documentary review with in-depth semi-structured interviews to develop a greater understanding of the CSOs under study and of the dynamics of power that animate the organizations’ activities, decisions, and outlook. By using two theories of power, Lukes’ Three Dimensional (3D) approach and Resource Dependence Theory (RDT), the dissertation examined both an institutional and episodic view of power, providing a richer view of power within the organizations under study. In RQ1, the study finds that CSOs are willing to allocate resources to the social construction of their sport; that they are sensitive to threshold effects in resource allocation, meaning they provide resources up to the point that a need is met, and not beyond; and that gender played a role in internal resource allocation. In RQ2, the results indicated that the CSOs under study were able to secure resources from their environments through not valuing their institutional existence, and through working with their multi-level governance structures. RQ3 finds that CSOs used anticipatory compliance with environmental actors and borrowing capacity of means to change their organizational environments. The overall conclusion of the study notes that low organizational capacity in CSOs has considerable benefits to go with the drawbacks previously noted in the CSO and not-for-profit literatures. The study outlines that CSOs are able to use their low capacity status to help ensure their organizational environment remains passive, allowing them to maintain a focus on their members and mission while securing sufficient resources to survive. Further discussion of volunteer leadership being a type of participation in sport and of the challenges of studying CSOs, as well as participant recruitment, are also included.

Khakhar, Priyan P. "Examining the impact of power, negotiator characteristics and environmental factors on the international business negotiation process." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.594761.

Abstract:
The increase in international business activity and the potential high losses deriving from unsuccessful negotiations highlights the importance of continued research within the international business negotiation discipline. The importance of international business negotiations within global business is reflected in the academic community by observing the growth in the number of publications and the increased reference to conceptual models of international business that capture a vast array of factors. Based on a thorough literature review the following research gaps were identified. First, insufficient empirical scrutiny regarding the use of international business negotiation models; and second the lack of statistical understanding of the association between 'important factors' and the negotiation process. The contribution to knowledge of the study is the empirical examination of the relationship between the 'negotiation process' and the 'important factors': 'power', 'environmental factors' and 'negotiators characteristics'. These three factors were identified as they are deemed important in international business negotiation models as well as negotiation literature in other disciplines. By examining the 'compositions' of the three factors and based on a comprehensive literature review, eleven variables and associated hypotheses encapsulating the above factors are suggested and tested. The number of negotiators in the sample was statistically determined and the survey was administered electronically (N=155). Testing of the hypotheses was conducted through a linear structural equation modeling methodology using LISREL i.e., a specialist software for the purposes of model testing. The main findings of the study are as follows. Six statistically significant results corresponding to six of the eleven hypotheses of the study were identified. These include information power, legitimate power, social harmony, political influence, team commitment and individual motivation with respect to competitive or cooperative negotiation processes. The academic contribution of this study relates to model exploration. It brings causal statistical objectivity to qualitatively developed concepts, as an essential step in development of knowledge. Both theoretical and managerial implications of the study are examined. Furthermore, directions for future research that build on the findings of the study are indicated.

The first step in negotiation is the information gathering and investigation, very often the investigation stage is not done properly, the negotiator has to decide about the goals, which information he can share, need to determine the BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement), learn about the person/team he will be negotiation with. In additional there are also differences in how people from different cultures use information and communicate during the negotiation, ignoring the culture differences can be major mistake. This research evaluate the option of using decision-making negotiation tool for the investigation stage and for negotiation process, the thesis provides design and features set for tool based on research done and feedback from potential users, the paper illustrate the negotiation culture differences between American and Israelis, and how it should be embedded in tool. Survey and interviews concluded to collect feedback from people in different industries, on culture differences between American and Israelis and on how negotiators are interested in tool for negotiation. Finally, results analyzed to determine future actions, consider culture differences and user's need for negotiation tool.

Sebetlele, Sewagodimo Amos. "Negotiation with teachers as a managerial task of the school principal / Sewagodimo Amos Sebetlele." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/845.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on the use of negotiation skills as a managerial task of the school principal in order to reduce conflicts between teachers and between teachers and themselves, so as to enhance a good working interpersonal relationship between them. This will lead to the building of trust, professional development and success. The purpose of this study was to determine through a literature study and empirical investigation, the nature of negotiation in schools and the skills used by principals when negotiating with teachers. The empirical investigation determined the skills used the most and least by principals when negotiating with teachers. Chapter 1 covered the statement of the problem, aims and methods to be used to obtain an overview of the nature of negotiation. This chapter also covers the empirical investigation which includes the questionnaire, population and sample, the statistical techniques. This chapter further covers the arrangement of chapters. Chapter 2 emphasises the nature of negotiation in general and in schools. The definition of negotiation and the concepts closely related to it are given in this chapter. The significance of negotiation and the negotiation principles are explained. The process of negotiation with its three phases, are discussed, approaches to negotiation are explained and common mistakes that occur during negotiation are highlighted. Mention is also made of the attitude principals have towards the use of negotiation in schools, as well is the effects that negotiations have on school performance. The context and skills needed in successful negotiation are discussed in chapter 3. With regard to the context of negotiation, the climate, negotiating for common ground, the characteristics of good agreement and the elements of negotiation are covered. With regard to skills needed in successful negotiation, listening, empathy, space, timing and persuasion are discussed. In chapter 4 the empirical research design, administrative procedures, population and sampling as well as statistical techniques are discussed. The completed and questionnaires returned by respondents are empirically analysed and interpreted. The practical significance (effect size) of differences between biographical data and the different negotiation factors is done to determine if the differences are large enough to have an effect in practice. In chapter 5 the summary of all the chapters is done as well as the findings 60m the research and the recommendations. Of all the negotiation skills discussed, it is evident that empathy is a skill that is mostly used by principals, followed by persuasion and the process of negotiation. The skill that is used least by school principals and that is also recommended as a topic for further research, is space. Recommendations of this study emphasize the importance of workshops and or in-service training for principals on the use of negotiation skills.

Chu, Kar-ning Catherina, and 朱家寧. "Power negotiation in planning: the transit-oriented development of Tseung Kwan O." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B49885030.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past, the planning process had been top down with a restrictive level of public participation. The decision-making power has been concentrated within the administration. The public has been tolerable at pre-1997. People in Hong Kong are no longer living at the “borrowed time” and “borrowed space” that Hughes (1976) described under the colonial rule after the return to motherland. They have developed a sense of belonging, show genuine concern on development of Hong Kong and increasing demands for participation in the policymaking process, hence the planning mechanism. The community has become more vocal in the planning process. Tseung Kwan O (TKO) is a third generation and the seventh new town in Hong Kong. Since the Executive Council’s designation to develop into new town in 1982, it has undergone very rapid development. Transport networks in news towns have been planned to serve by railway. Railway is the backbone of Hong Kong’s transport system and it has a strong impact on urban development. In Hong Kong, urban development has followed the transit-oriented approach. There are institutional settings and policies in public and private sectors that support transit-oriented development (TOD). Drastic spatial changes occurred in the surrounding area of MTR stations after the operation in 2002. Taking advantage of the enhanced accessibility brought about by the railway line, high density developments are located close to the MTR stations at Po Lam, Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O and Tiu Keng Leng, each forming a district centre with its own retail and supporting facilities. The study scope would be based on the institutional settings and policies in public and private sectors that support TOD. In a society that composed of a heterogeneous group of people with different interests, the stakeholder composed a power structure in the planning process of the TKO new town, negotiation among the power exists. The resultant urban pattern is an outcome of the power negotiation. This study aimed to examine how different stakeholders participated in the negotiation of planning process in the latest generation of new town using the case of TKO as illustration. The level of public participation in the planning process of Tseung Kwan O has been increasing. As the community has become more vocal in the planning process, efforts can be seen in reaching out to different stakeholders regarding the further development of Tseung Kwan O with a view to jointly planned with the community.

Zeng, Wenna. "Localization as power negotiation: the production of an imported television format in China." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2017. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/409.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, there have been two contradictory views on the nature of power in the body politic: that of the centralized and top-down power structure within the state apparatus and that of dispersive power, based on knowledge, exemplified by the work of Max Weber and Michel Foucault respectively. This PhD thesis will demonstrate that a better path to the understanding of power, at least in relation to the localization of television formats in China, is that explained by the theory of negotiated power. Based on these theoretical foundations on the nature of power and continuing discussions on globalization and production studies, this thesis introduces a new approach to understand power via dynamic value exchanges among resources, capital and interest. The findings are positioned in relation to the literature on power theories, globalization, television format research and Chinese media studies. Based on six months' of ethnographic study on Hurry Up, Brother, which is a Korean format show localized by a Chinese network, this research examines the power relations in the decision-making process concerned with the format localization among several different parties - internal and external - involved in the operation, namely Chinese Zhejiang Satellite TV and its production team, Korean Seoul Broadcasting System and its travelling producers, the Chinese government, sponsors, celebrities, Chinese independent companies and their editors, and audiences. It integrates the theories of negotiated order, cultural proximity and the mechanism of production into its theoretical framework to demonstrate how negotiated power is exercised in a project network via exchanges of resources, capital and interests among different parties. This theoretical framework helps to challenge the hierarchical power approach by the Chinese media; and to provide detailed empirical evidence to show how political, economic, cultural and social factors impinge upon decision-making. In conclusion, it is noted that initially power is neither centralized nor dispersive in China, but rather, power is negotiated; later it suggests an innovative approach that power is the result of competition of capital based on changes of primary interests among different parties, indicating that localization is part of the process of power negotiations. This doctoral thesis provides first-hand and detailed data as well as a dynamic picture of how power is exercised in the contemporary Chinese television industry where entertainment production increasingly breaks free of governmental centralized control by replacing it with power negotiations. This approach overcomes the geographic dichotomy between global and local, and expands the boundaries of cultural, economic, political, professional and social fields. This thesis is an experimental study which the author can motivate a new direction in the discussion on power theories as well as help in the understanding of the globalization of cultural products and of Chinese television in general.

Abstract:
Historians of the American South have been diverse in their descriptions of the master-slave relationship over the last half-century, and have engaged in lengthy discussions in an attempt to answer the intricate question of what life was like between slaves and their masters. The phenomenon of slave runaways has perhaps offered the most convincing evidence of the troubles on southern plantations, which has been used in recent decades to emphasize negotiation and agency in the shaping of master-slave relations. The last twenty years have been consequently marked by a plethora of studies that accentuate non-traditional slave holding as it becomes clearer that masters had to compromise with their human chattel. Through an examination 9,975 runaway slave advertisements and 943 testimonies of former slaves, this study illustrates how black bondsmen absented themselves so to negotiate the terms of their working and living conditions. It traces the acts of individual slave runaways in place of broader generalizations that have for a long time contributed to some of the myths and legends of American slavery through examination of the many reasons that slaves chose to stay in bondage.

Mok, Wilson Wai Ho. "Integration of Learning, Situational Power and Goal Constraints Into Time-Dependent Electronic Negotiation Agents." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/955.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past decade, electronic negotiation has become an important research topic in the field of information systems. A desirable goal of negotiation agents is to understand their owners' requirements, and to learn their opponents' behavior, thereby lessening the involvement of human beings. Studies on human negotiation bring out that several issues can affect a human's negotiation behavior, including learning an opponent's behavior, exerting power on an opponent, and setting an individual goal to improve the level of accomplishment. Research on incorporating these issues into negotiation agents is, however, still at an infancy state. We therefore take up this topic in this thesis. Researchers have proposed many different negotiation agents that follow a preset behavior based on human models of negotiation. In this thesis, we consider one such model, known as the time-dependent-tactical model, which is used by human negotiators and in which the values of the negotiating issues are determined based on the time elapsed in the negotiation. A learning mechanism for this model might be beneficial, because this model is frequently used in electronic negotiation. Thus, we propose heuristic algorithms that estimate the parameters of an agent's time-dependent-tactical model, and that then react to the estimated parameters for achieving higher negotiation performance. Besides learning, we incorporate two other factors that have been found to affect a human negotiation outcome. These are situational power, which represents differences in negotiators' status based on market conditions, and goal constraints, which stand for the levels of accomplishment negotiators try to strive for. To validate the impacts of learning, situational power and goal constraints in electronic negotiation, we first present how to integrate these features into negotiation agents, and then conduct simulations. With 187,500 simulation runs, we observe that our learning algorithms are effective in improving both individual and dyadic negotiation performances. For the effects of situational power and goal constraints, we obtain congruent results between human and electronic negotiations. By incorporating learning into situational power and goal constraints, we achieve significant joint effect between learning and situational power as well as that between learning and goal constraints. In summary, this thesis provides three primary contributions to the fields of information systems and electronic-commerce research. First, we have designed algorithms for learning an opponent's negotiation behavior. Second, our learning algorithms are found to be effective in improving negotiation performance. Third, we have shown how learning can be integrated with situational power and goal constraints, although this is not a major focus in this study. Finally, the agreement on the joint effects of learning, situational power and goal constraints between human and electronic negotiations suggests that our integrated design of the agent appears to be effective.

Freeman, Gudrun. "Antecedents and consequences of negotiation in marital decision- making." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39914.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between marital negotiation strategies and various context and outcome factors are examined using responses from 249 women and men. Multiple regression analysis confirmed significant links between context factors and negotiation strategies. Self-esteem was important in explaining degree of reliance on some types of negotiation, as was emotional interdependence and perceived past cooperativeness of the marital partner. Training in communication skills did not affect women's style of negotiation but was significant for men. The strategy of simply telling the spouse what is wanted or needed was more important to reaching agreement and having a sense of fairness about the outcome than were strategies like bargaining, reasoning or threatening. These findings are discussed within a theoretical framework that gives consideration to negotiation as a process important to understanding marital power.

Gerlach, Carina. "The EU, the WTO and trade in services : power and negotiation in the international political economy." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2008. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10873.

Full text
Abstract:
For the European Union (EU), the field of trade policy is a main field in which the EU can assert its actorness and build its identity as an international actor. This "superpower" potential arises out of the EU's extensive resource equipment in trade policy and is driven forward by the EU's significant economic interests. To what extent, however, the EU has been able to use its resources to shape the rules of the international trade regime according to its own preferences has remained questionable. This thesis investigates the question of the EU's impact on and power utilisation in the international trade regime by analysing the EU's changing involvement in World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations. Drawing from the theoretical concepts of the "international regime" and "power", the thesis proposes an approach centred on the possession, mobilisation and impact of actors' power in international regimes. In particular, the thesis proposes a framework centred on five key elements: specification of the regime, its qualities and focus; the resources or 'underlying power' that actors bring to the regime; the resources derived by actors from the operation of the regime itself, or 'organisationally dependent capabilities'; the manifestation or deployment of resources and strategies by actors in negotiations; and outcomes defined in terms of actors' power over the regime itself. After an examination of the broad context of the WTO's development and the EU's involvement in the international trade regime, this framework is then explored through a detailed study of the EU's involvement in the negotiations over trade in services that took place in the WTO between 1995 and 2005, using evidence from a wide range of documentary sources and from interviews. On the basis of this exploration of trade in services, the thesis finds that despite the EU's outstanding resources, the WTO negotiations have become too complex for the EU to decisively influence them due to a power shift in the international trade regime. The special nature of the trade in services negotiations makes these particularly unmanageable and they do not seem to present the EU with a setting for achieving its preferences. A lack of cooperation among the WTO members in favour of the negotiations has made progress in the negotiations very hard to realise for the EU. At the same time, the erosion of the EU's resources by the shifting attitude in civil society towards trade policy, and an apparent Jack of business support, has increased the challenge for the EU of managing the international trade regime. Questions are therefore raised about the extent to which the EU has responded to change, mobilised its resources effectively and had a consistent impact on the international trade regime since the mid-1990s.

Diala, Jane Chinonyerem. "The interplay of structure and agency: the negotiation process of bridewealth payment in South-East Nigeria." Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Law, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30019.

Full text
Abstract:
The payment of bridewealth is a near-universal cultural practice among the Igbos of SouthEast Nigeria. Bridewealth used to be a symbolic legitimator of marriage. However, its symbolism has been distorted by expensive items on marriage lists. In this context, bridewealth payment provides an excellent analytical tool for the structure-agency debate, which has, in varying degrees, engaged academic interest for centuries. Underlying this debate is the extent to which institutions determine human behaviour and its attendant power relations. While structure refers to the self-replicating, complex elements that sustain institutions, agency refers to the volitional, purpose-driven nature of human activities. In this debate, the structuralfunctionalist-Marxist view, symbolic interactionism, and complementarity view are prominent. From these views, this dissertation develops a needs-based approach to structure-agency interaction, arguing that a focus on the primacy of structure or agency obscures their underlying motivations. It posits that the structure-agency interaction is both the process and product of logical assessments and dialogue, which are driven by socio-economic needs. In the context of this framework, it explored one central question: In what ways do power relations play out in the negotiation process of bridewealth payment in South-East Nigeria? Using literature review, non-participant observation of bridewealth negotiations, and in-depth interviews of 47 key informants, it reveals an interdependent, complex web linking the custodians of culture with agentic tools such as wealth, religion, and education. Despite cultural inhibitions in spousal selection and bridewealth negotiation, prospective spouses have a range of creative tools for reducing exorbitant items on marriage lists, thereby deconstructing high bridewealth. These agentic tools are driven by socio-economic elements such as desire to marry, economic coercion, cohabitation, threat of extramarital pregnancy, and religious values. The study concludes that bridewealth negotiation reflects socio-economic dynamics within hybrid cultural spaces in which potential couples and their parents may navigate the powerful constraints of tradition or sustain tradition through their inaction. These socio-economic dynamics are so powerful that they produce widespread disregard for legislation limiting bridewealth amounts. The study’s findings demonstrate the ineffectiveness of a top-down approach to law, the value of policy sensitivity to people’s lived realities, and the importance of in-depth consultation in the formulation of legislation.

Abstract:
Therapeutic education initiatives embodying a whole child approach can be seen to address the intellectual, emotional, bodily and spiritual as being part of a child’s educational self. Through designing and implementing the concept of “aesthetic life narratives” in a primary school classroom, my research produces a curricular example of how therapeutic notions such as those found in psychological thought can be integrated into contemporary Scottish education through narrative and aesthetic means, exemplifying how individual children can make sense of expressive processes and roles introduced to them in an educational context. The specific characteristics of the research space and the particular interactive quality of research participation also illustrate how different children are able to participate in a short-term emotional education intervention specifically designed to be empowering. At the same time, my experience shows that the complex dynamic between the subjective life of a researcher and the historical nature of a child’s experience with caregivers in their home life can shape educational/research experience, as well as its adult and child participants, in ways unanticipated. What transpired in the process of applying philosophical ideas to the real lives of children in my research produced ethical implications regarding critical reflexivity and the socio-cultural regard of the child that are of wider relevance to educators, researchers, counsellors and policy makers who interact with children in their own work.

Skuna, Jiraphan. "International joint venture negotiation behaviour outcome : the role of bargaining power, culture and trust : qualitative case studies." Thesis, City University London, 2000. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/8224/.

Full text
Abstract:
Most of the literature on joint ventures (JVs) in developing countries has been viewed from the perspective of the foreign partners, ignoring the strategic imperatives and goals of the host country partners. Additionally, there has been very little research on international joint ventures (IJVs) in Thailand. Therefore, a study of the relationships between bargaining power, trust and culture affecting negotiation behaviour and outcomes (JV performance) could clarify and complement the results of past studies. It could lead foreign and Thai investors to better understand what they should do before and after entering into JVs, so as to achieve an effective performance (outcome), the success of IJV, cost minimization and profit maximization. This study examines the variables mentioned above in the context of service industries (e.g. construction, leasing, gas distribution), within the confines of joint venture theory and negotiation theory. The data was gathered using both questionnaires and in-depth interviews with a number of MDs and senior managers of JV firms. Both Thai and foreign parents were interviewed where possible. The result of the study shows that relationships between bargaining power, trust, culture, negotiation behaviour and performance (outcome) exist. A significant external factor affecting JV performance was also identified. Case studies were used as a research strategy for this study. 'Pattern matching logic' and 'explanation building' techniques were used for the analysis of data. In addition, data display technique was added to offer a clear understanding and picture of the results of the study. Regarding JV management and negotiation, this study demonstrated that each JV partner should pay attention and time to support the development of mutual trust and cultural understanding in order to avoid conflict and enhance a successful JV performance. This study also revealed the effect of bargaining power, trust and culture on JV performance mediated by negotiation tactics. This has received little attention in previous studies.

Karenina-Paterson, Sophie Lilian. "The narrative of anomie: power, agency and the negotiation of identity of mainland Chinese students in HongKong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B49799484.

Full text
Abstract:
The sociological concept of anomie describes a state in which an individual or community experiences a loss or lack of a clear sense of norms. Anomie can be understood from three key theoretical perspectives from Merton, Durkheim and Guyau, respectively. These are: 1) a dilemma of having to choose between socially acceptable goals and the means required to achieve them; 2) a loss of meaningful connection with social classification through sudden change; and 3) a period of existential obligation in which problems must be solved in order to move to the next developmental stage. Power and institutions share an intrinsic relationship with theories of anomie as from a Foucauldian perspective; it is institutions that are tasked with the maintenance of social norms through the investiture of legitimate power. Feelings of dysphoria also frequently accompany anomie as individuals and groups change and adapt in the process of developing coping skills of either motivation and increasing agency, or survival and acquiescence. This thesis is the final product of a qualitative research study of the lived-experiences of Mainland Chinese students who are currently studying in Hong Kong, or who graduated within the past five years. Using a narrative theory approach with values of empowerment and collaborative research, testimony from 25 participants was obtained through guided, in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The study found that experiences of discrimination and exploitation against Mainland students are common both in wider society and within university institutions. These experiences in turn often led participants to begin questioning their personal worth, the value of their goals, and sense of “Chinese-ness”. As a result, participants came to question the shared narrative of Hong Kong’s cultural and economic superiority, and its own internal sense of identity and future direction within a greater Chinese community. Through this thesis, I argue that although experiences of anomie involve potentially distressing periods of change, uncertainty and dysphoria, they also serve an important social function in contributing to the formation and negotiation of norms, and in the process, help to maintain an ongoing, contiguous narrative both of individuals and the communities that they live within. The concept of a “Constellation Theory of Anomie “is developed using two models entitled “The Theoretical Constellation of Anomie” and “The Narrative of Anomie” to explain the bi-dimensional nature of anomie in contexts of structurated space and narrative time. As Hong Kong and Mainland China continue to move closer together, existing social, cultural and behavioural norms become increasingly contested. Mainland Chinese students studying in Hong Kong are a singularly important group as their presence in the region serves as one context for the negotiation of a stable, inclusive group identity and narrative.

Abstract:
Motivational factors and bargaining power have been recognized by scholars and practitioners alike, as important elements for negotiation strategies. However, there has been little effort to date to empirically or theoretically study the effect of these factors in the context of auditor-client negotiation while adopting a decision-making process framework. We present a Throughput Model framework that describes the decision-making process of auditors when they make decisions about negotiation strategies. The model depicts how (a) perception of motivational factors and (b) bargaining power affect the choice of negotiation strategy and identifies different pathways auditors use in their decision about negotiation strategies. In our experiment, we manipulate engagement risk perception, client pressure, corporate mechanisms strength as well as financial information. We. investigate their effects on auditor decision making about the likelihood of accepting client's management alternative and on the negotiation strategies choice. We find that only engagement risk perception influences auditor's propensity to accept aggressive accounting treatments of the client. This in turn influences the use of all the negotiation strategies. On the other hand, client pressure only has effect on compromising strategies while bargaining power influences the concessionary strategy of auditors. Moreover, two dominant decision making pathways are used by auditors, i.e. P→J→D and P→D.

Abstract:
This study investigates how the members of four different role-playing communities on the online platform Second Life perform social as well as dramatic roles within their community. The trajectories of power influencing these roles are my main focus. Theoretically I am relying primarily on performance studies scholar Richard Schechner, sociologist Erving Goffman, and post-structuralists Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Felìx Guattari. My methodological stance has its origin primarily within literature studies using text analysis as my preferred method, but I also draw on the (cyber)ethnographical works of primarily T.L. Taylor, Celia Pearce, and Mikael Jakobsson. In this dissertation my focus is the relationship of the role-player to their chosen role especially in terms of the boundary between being in character, and as such removed from ”reality,” and the popping out of character, which instead highlights the negotiations of the social, sometimes make-belief, roles. Destabilising and problematising the dichotomy between the notion of the online as virtual and the offline as real, as well as the idea that everything is ”real” regardless of context, my aim is to understand role-play in a digital realm in a new way, in which two modes of performance, dramatic and social, take place in a digital context online — or inworld as many SL residents call it.

Abstract:

Mega projects are in most cases considered as the necessary evil of development. Before their benefits can be reaped, a lot of sacrifices and tough choices have to be made. The fear and uncertainties surrounding such projects range from the impacts on the local people, on the environment, the costs of investment, and to, if the project will deliver the promised benefits. Because of these fears and uncertainties, it is not unusual that most if not all such projects meet a lot of critics and resistance before their success or failures are witnessed. Today, it is more of a requirement than a belief (although without a guarantee) that stakeholders’ involvement and their active participation in all decision-making process concerning a project is the surest way of minimizing conflicts and ensuring justice. The Bujagali hydropower project being an example of such projects and without immunity to the problems faced by other mega project around the world has been a case study for this thesis. This study has therefore focused on institutional arrangements that governed the management and utilization of water resources in connection to hydropower development along the Nile River in Uganda, the procedures and stages of the negotiations for hydropower infrastructure development in Uganda, identified the major stakeholders that take part in such negotiations and looked in detail for what their issues and interests are. It has also examined the attitudes and opinions of stakeholders on the potential and benefits of hydropower against (solar, bio-fuel and geothermal) energy sources in the context of Uganda, taking into consideration the need for socio-economic development, preservation of culture and environmental protection. Finally, it has analyzed the conflicts/controversies that have arisen in the Bujagali hydropower project.

Abstract:
This research reviews theoretical and operational concepts of integrity. After this review, an alternative theoretical and operational definition of integrity is proposed. This alternative is one that conceives of integrity in terms of high ethical concern and positive ethical consistency among thoughts, feelings, and behavioral intentions, and which conceives of integrity as more attitude-like than trait- or state-like. Utilizing this alternative conceptualization of integrity, a new label was applied (i.e. ethical integrity) and a new psychometric instrument was developed (i.e. the Ethical Integrity Scale). This dissertation reports on the initial development of the Ethical Integrity Scale and two studies aimed at validation of this instrument. Strengths, limitations, and future directions of this approach to integrity research are then discussed.

Abstract:
In this thesis I investigate the process of international negotiation to resolve a serious dispute between Australia and East Timor over offshore oil and gas, which arose after East Timor’s transition to independence in 1999. The central aim is to uncover and analyse the dynamics of the negotiations, and to explain how outcomes were determined. The question of negotiated outcomes is of special significance given the extent to which East Timor was able to move Australia beyond its preferred outcome. In this case, the seemingly weaker party was able to overcome a more powerful bargaining opponent. My aim in writing this thesis is to explain why that was possible and how it was achieved.

Full text
Abstract:
The St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project, built cooperatively between 1954 and 1959 by Canada and the United States, is the largest navigable inland waterway in the world and the largest borderlands project ever undertaken jointly by two countries. This thesis combines diplomatic, political, and environmental history to chart the course of domestic and international negotiations, particularly in the 1945-1954 period, that resulted in the bilateral 1954 agreement to build the seaway. The focus is on the Canadian federal government and to a lesser extent the U.S. federal government, as well as involved state and provincial governments and their public power utilities. These negotiations are extremely revealing in terms of the history of Canadian-American relations, and this thesis also examines issues connected to North American attitudes toward water resources, state-building, high modernism, and technology in the early Cold War period. After a number of failed attempts at a cooperative waterway, in the late 1940s the Liberal government of Louis St. Laurent began to explore the possibility of an all-Canadian seaway, and backed by widespread public support, had adopted this as policy by 1952. The drive for an all-Canadian seaway stemmed from various forms of nationalism which framed the St. Lawrence as an exclusively “Canadian” resource that was intimately tied to Canadian identity. However, the Truman administration and different American interests deemed a unilateral Canadian waterway to be an economic and national security threat to the United States, and delayed the requisite power licenses needed for Canada to undertake the transborder St. Lawrence project. Canada partly contributed to this situation by repeatedly making vague offers to leave the door open for American involvement in the hopes that this would expedite the hydro aspect of the project. The Eisenhower administration also stalled Ottawa’s efforts to “go it alone” until American participation was finally sanctioned by Congress in 1954 and the requisite licenses were granted. The St. Laurent government then reluctantly acquiesced to the American desire for a joint endeavour in order to maintain harmonious Canada-U.S. relations, although Canada did extract key concessions from Washington about the shape and placement of the project.

Abstract:
How do differences in the informal capabilities of Member States impact their bargaining success at the EU level? Based on new datasets collected via 145 semi-structured interviews with national negotiators and EU officials in Brussels, this research shows how MS informal capabilities impact legislative outcomes in the EU. This research provides evidence that informal capacities, such as the effectiveness of MS permanent representations and their capacity to coordinate with other actors in the legislative decision-making, matter for bargaining success. Using a mixed-method design, this dissertation explores the conditions and mechanisms granting more explanatory power to informal capabilities as determinants of EU Member States bargaining success in the Council of the EU.

Graveling, Elizabeth. "Negotiating the powers : everyday religion in Ghanaian society." Thesis, University of Bath, 2008. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.492248.

Full text
Abstract:
Engagement with religion has recently become an important issue to development theoreticians, donors and practitioners. It is recognised that religion plays a key role in shaping moral frameworks and social identities, but little attention is paid to how this is played out in everyday life: the focus remains on ‘faith communities’ and ‘faith-based organisations’ as unified bodies. This thesis uses ethnographic methods to examine how members of two churches in rural Ghana are influenced by and engage with religion. Rather than viewing religion simply as (potentially) instrumental to development, it seeks to approach it in its own right. It challenges the rigidity of categories such as ‘physical/spiritual’ and ‘religious/non-religious’, and the notion of ‘faith communities’ as discrete, unified entities with coherent religious cosmologies. Insights from witchcraft studies and medical anthropology indicate that spiritual discourses are drawn on to negotiate hybrid and continuously changing modernities, and people tend to act pragmatically, combining and moving between discourses rather than fully espousing a particular ideology. Residents of the village studied appear to inhabit a world of different but interconnecting powers, which they are both, to some extent, subject to and able to marshal. These include God, secondary deities, juju, witchcraft, family authorities, traditional leaders, biomedicine and churches. Relationships with both spirits and humans are ambivalent and each of these powers can bring both blessings and harm. Religious experience is fluid, eclectic and pragmatic as people continually enter and exit groups and marshal different powers simultaneously to protect themselves from harm and procure blessings. Approaches by the development world seeking to engage with religion and to take seriously local people’s interests and viewpoints should thus be wary of oversimplification according to traditional Western social science categories, and be underpinned by an understanding of how religious discourses are interpreted and enacted in people’s everyday lives.

This paper analyzes changes in community governance in the contextof negotiations with a mining company. We focus on three issues:the role played by the community government on the regulation ofcommunity resources and territory, the diverse and complex intereststhat emerge in the presence of mining activity; and, the communityas a political institution confronting external pressures over its land.We develop a study case focusing on the negotiation process betweenthe Michiquillay peasant community and Anglo American MiningCompany in Cajamarca, Peru. This information was obtained doingfieldwork in the community in 2009. In our analysis we observe thatchanges on community resources regulation, its uses and valorization,as well as changes on the balance of power between economicand political actors, have created a greater level of complexity in thecommunity, creating new levels of community decision and spaces fordisputing resources’ control. At the same time, new inter communalconflicts emerge and fragmentation of community lands increases. In this context the community as an institution plays a central rolein the negotiation process over access productive resource and thedistribution of financial capital.

The present paper focus on the process of collective negotiation in the ‘gaucho’ private education area, more precisely between the Union of Private Schools in the State of Rio Grande do Sul - SINEPE/RS and the Teacher’s Union of the State of Rio Grande do Sul - SINPRO/RS in the period 1992 – 2013. As empirical data, it uses documents and other records filed at SINEPE, besides the memories of the writer taking into consideration his role along the time frame analyzed here. From the broader social and political context and, considering the scenario and the specific demands of each period of negotiation, with its tensions and agreements, the negotiation processes are verified, in other words, the management methods effected. In the analytical process some units of analyses were selected: The Negotiation period Time, Respect for Differences and Democratic Process. Making use of theoretical framework that deal with the subject, with special emphasis on the ideas of Clea Macagnan, we unfold considerations about the preparation and the role of negotiators, of the competence and leadership as well as the necessary care in face of political demands and power relations. Among the final considerations, we highlight the complexity of the negotiation process, as well as the importance of a leadership which acts in the democratic perspective, being the leadership credibility the nuclear question in conducting the process.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of a study of power relations between the crown and the church in Sweden during the 17th century. The study is focused on the Swedish Parliament and how the Estate of the Clergy responded to royal pretensions. The Swedish Clerical Estate is viewed as essential for the Swedish state formation process. The argument in the study is inspired by theories suggesting that state building and state formation were outcomes of a bargaining process between rulers and local power holders. The perspective presented by the historian Jan Glete is of great importance. He defines the early modern state as a complex organization providing protection and violence control. He emphasizes that the power of the state and the state’s character were dependent upon how the state could assert power. In order to do this, the rulers bartered with their subjects using protection as a commodity while in return the subjects paid required taxes. This bargaining process is interpreted as interactive. The rulers linked various local interests to the state and in doing so gained control of the society and the use of violence. The Swedish Clerical Estate played an important role in this process. Due in part to this fact, the clergy differed from the other subjects of the realm such as the nobility or the peasants. The clergy did not own any sizeable amount of property and did not exert any economical influence. Instead the Clerical Estate negotiated using their ideological, cultural and political resources. These commodities became essential in how the king organized the state. In exchange for royal protection, the clergy were given the task of supporting and explaining the crown’s economical and military needs. By doing so, the Clerical Estate legitimated the royal power in the parliament and in the society as a whole. At the same time, this negotiation signified a definition of the role of the clergyman within the state. Though the Clerical Estate sometimes tried to reject royal claims, it was the king who decided the conditions of negotiation. The parliament as a political field was created by the king and for the king. From a political point of view, religion and a theological framework became of great importance and were adopted by the crown in order to exploit resources. Taking this into consideration, the 17th century Swedish state seems to be more effective than other European early modern states.

The GATT 1947 was an agreement for tariff reductions celebrated between 23 countries in Geneva. The way that state power affected its design can be observed through the negotiation process that led to the agreement. The negotiation process was conditioned by power right away in the sense that the United States, the biggest power in the western world, initiated negotiations with the United Kingdom. The interest of both these countries (and the countries of interest to them) determined who could participate in the Geneva negotiations. This shows how the most powerful actors established the parameters of the negotiation of the agreement. Power can also be observed effectively in the Geneva negotiations by the bargaining power of the different countries and how they were able to represent their interests in the agreement. However, in this too the US took center stage in the sense that the others bargained in reference to this country’s interests.

Abstract:
ICTs have enabled increased mobility and created a new era of workplace connectivity. Due to changes in work organization, global operations, increased mobility, and the new opportunities they are creating; work requires more coordination, more travel and a higher frequency of boundary spanning. ICTs have infiltrated into the personal life of individuals, while similarly, having an increasing impact on how organizations manage their workers‘ work-life balance. This research investigates the work boundary negotiation process in ICT-enabled work.Using an in-depth case study supplemented with visual data, this thesis studies the case of Sigma, an international consulting firm, that serves clients located in a large geographical area. It explores how consultants exhibiting mobile work practices, use ICTs to negotiate work boundaries. It draws on the structurational model of technology and complements it with the boundary object construct. The utilisation of this combined approach allows further understanding of work boundary negotiation. The research reveals that some ICTs as technological artefacts are boundary objects bridging between different groups of actors, crossing work boundaries, and allowing actors to negotiate their work boundaries while challenging traditional boundaries. Thus, allowing consultants to use their ICTs (specifically their smartphone) to negotiate their work boundaries on a need to basis. The boundary negotiation process (as revealed by the structuration process) is the means by which consultants try to make the most out of existing social structures – in this case specifically domination – in their organizational context. The ICT becomes a source of power and is mainly used to manifest domination over available resources. Consultants use them to maintain control over their life, increase their legitimacy and convey that they are professional experts. ICTs allow consultants to continuously redefine their work boundaries which become dynamic, fluid and contextual; the research reaffirms the sociotechnical nature of work boundaries. The thesis also develops a conceptual model of work boundary negotiation that conceptually illustrates how boundary negotiation is the outcome of the structuration process and the negotiation of existing structures of domination, legitimation and signification.

Abstract:
Gangs are a contemporary criminological issue in Britain, dominating media and policy discourses around youth delinquency. This research utilises a qualitative approach to identify the impact of gangs on the Probation Service in Manchester. The relationship between Probation Officers and the Probation Service is mediated by complex power dynamics. The Probation Service has recast its role as powerful enforcer of punitive sanctions. The implications of this for Probation Officers is on the one hand, an increase in 'symbolic' power through increasingly coercive working practices and discourse whilst representing decreasing professionalization and autonomy and a lack of identification with new service values. Therefore, the reality of Probation work is characterised by a perceived reduction in power. This is mirrored in the gang experience. Gang members perceive themselves as powerful within the confines of the gang and neighbourhood, by adopting masculinised performances of identity but individual gang members are also powerless through their exclusion and alienation from mainstream society.
