Miles, Lesley Margaret Pears. "Masculinity, power, sexual negotiation and AIDS : a discourse analysis." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13490.
Full textThis study focusses on the relationship between masculinity, power, sexuality and AIDS. It examines how discursive positioning within discourses of sexuality and masculinity affects the way heterosexual men negotiate safer sex. Four groups of sexually active men aged 17-28 were constituted to discuss masculinity, sexual negotiation and AIDS. A vignette was used to prompt discussion. The resulting audio-taped leaderless men-only group discussions were analysed, using Hallway's interpretative discourse analysis, which draws on a. post-structuralist theory of discourse, especially as articulated by Foucault. In the accounts, it appeared that, firstly, the sexual drive discourse and male sexual drive discourse; and secondly, the discourses of sexual performance and potency, a.re the discourses offering subject positions which most directly impede the practice of safer sex. Negotiating safer sex interrupts· the impetus of the "passion" of the sexual drive. Further, it threatens the imperatives of successful "performance" which entail erection, penetration, ejaculation, and responsibility for the woman's orgasm. Rationalisations for avoiding negotiating safer sex were also offered within the discourses of mood-breaking, trust/mistrust, and stigma. Discourses present tended to embody a.n ideology of male dominance within the sexual sphere, reinforcing theories which suggest that gendered power relations in society present a. major stumbling block to safer sex. Although discourses were similar across the groups, there were contradictory discourses within the groups which were voiced by particular individuals. It is suggested that core requirements of HIV education for men would be, firstly, depictions of alternative versions of masculinity and images of sexual practice which incorporated shared responsibility and questioned the "naturalness" of dominant constructions of heterosexuality; and secondly, the provision of safe spaces in which men may be able to reflexively explore their own sexuality and begin to imagine new ways of experiencing sexual relationships.

The first step in negotiation is the information gathering and investigation, very often the investigation stage is not done properly, the negotiator has to decide about the goals, which information he can share, need to determine the BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement), learn about the person/team he will be negotiation with. In additional there are also differences in how people from different cultures use information and communicate during the negotiation, ignoring the culture differences can be major mistake. This research evaluate the option of using decision-making negotiation tool for the investigation stage and for negotiation process, the thesis provides design and features set for tool based on research done and feedback from potential users, the paper illustrate the negotiation culture differences between American and Israelis, and how it should be embedded in tool. Survey and interviews concluded to collect feedback from people in different industries, on culture differences between American and Israelis and on how negotiators are interested in tool for negotiation. Finally, results analyzed to determine future actions, consider culture differences and user's need for negotiation tool.

Full textMega projects are in most cases considered as the necessary evil of development. Before their benefits can be reaped, a lot of sacrifices and tough choices have to be made. The fear and uncertainties surrounding such projects range from the impacts on the local people, on the environment, the costs of investment, and to, if the project will deliver the promised benefits. Because of these fears and uncertainties, it is not unusual that most if not all such projects meet a lot of critics and resistance before their success or failures are witnessed. Today, it is more of a requirement than a belief (although without a guarantee) that stakeholders’ involvement and their active participation in all decision-making process concerning a project is the surest way of minimizing conflicts and ensuring justice. The Bujagali hydropower project being an example of such projects and without immunity to the problems faced by other mega project around the world has been a case study for this thesis. This study has therefore focused on institutional arrangements that governed the management and utilization of water resources in connection to hydropower development along the Nile River in Uganda, the procedures and stages of the negotiations for hydropower infrastructure development in Uganda, identified the major stakeholders that take part in such negotiations and looked in detail for what their issues and interests are. It has also examined the attitudes and opinions of stakeholders on the potential and benefits of hydropower against (solar, bio-fuel and geothermal) energy sources in the context of Uganda, taking into consideration the need for socio-economic development, preservation of culture and environmental protection. Finally, it has analyzed the conflicts/controversies that have arisen in the Bujagali hydropower project.

Full textThis paper analyzes changes in community governance in the contextof negotiations with a mining company. We focus on three issues:the role played by the community government on the regulation ofcommunity resources and territory, the diverse and complex intereststhat emerge in the presence of mining activity; and, the communityas a political institution confronting external pressures over its land.We develop a study case focusing on the negotiation process betweenthe Michiquillay peasant community and Anglo American MiningCompany in Cajamarca, Peru. This information was obtained doingfieldwork in the community in 2009. In our analysis we observe thatchanges on community resources regulation, its uses and valorization,as well as changes on the balance of power between economicand political actors, have created a greater level of complexity in thecommunity, creating new levels of community decision and spaces fordisputing resources’ control. At the same time, new inter communalconflicts emerge and fragmentation of community lands increases. In this context the community as an institution plays a central rolein the negotiation process over access productive resource and thedistribution of financial capital.

The present paper focus on the process of collective negotiation in the ‘gaucho’ private education area, more precisely between the Union of Private Schools in the State of Rio Grande do Sul - SINEPE/RS and the Teacher’s Union of the State of Rio Grande do Sul - SINPRO/RS in the period 1992 – 2013. As empirical data, it uses documents and other records filed at SINEPE, besides the memories of the writer taking into consideration his role along the time frame analyzed here. From the broader social and political context and, considering the scenario and the specific demands of each period of negotiation, with its tensions and agreements, the negotiation processes are verified, in other words, the management methods effected. In the analytical process some units of analyses were selected: The Negotiation period Time, Respect for Differences and Democratic Process. Making use of theoretical framework that deal with the subject, with special emphasis on the ideas of Clea Macagnan, we unfold considerations about the preparation and the role of negotiators, of the competence and leadership as well as the necessary care in face of political demands and power relations. Among the final considerations, we highlight the complexity of the negotiation process, as well as the importance of a leadership which acts in the democratic perspective, being the leadership credibility the nuclear question in conducting the process.

The GATT 1947 was an agreement for tariff reductions celebrated between 23 countries in Geneva. The way that state power affected its design can be observed through the negotiation process that led to the agreement. The negotiation process was conditioned by power right away in the sense that the United States, the biggest power in the western world, initiated negotiations with the United Kingdom. The interest of both these countries (and the countries of interest to them) determined who could participate in the Geneva negotiations. This shows how the most powerful actors established the parameters of the negotiation of the agreement. Power can also be observed effectively in the Geneva negotiations by the bargaining power of the different countries and how they were able to represent their interests in the agreement. However, in this too the US took center stage in the sense that the others bargained in reference to this country’s interests.
