Abstract:
This essay explores the paradoxical relationship between Václav Havel’s dramas and his essays, in particular, The Power of the Powerless. Havel’s plays aimed at creating a new community awareness of the “post-totalitarian” system in which people were trapped. His essays employ similar dramatic and analytic techniques to show a way out of that trap by “living within the truth,” that is, living in a way that exposes the mendacity of “post-totalitarianism” and spreads the virus of truth and change throughout society. The present essay argues that the ultimate aim of the “existential revolution” Havel calls for is in fact the regeneration and strengthening of civil society and the creation of institutions that serve people, not power. It concludes by looking at the continuing relevance of The Power of the Powerless today.

Abstract:
In this study, the consumer types were divided into two groups: power and powerless. First, depending on the sense of power, the interaction effect between power and powerless was verified based on two types of weather: sunny and cloudy. Secondly, the purchase intention of luxury goods was examined as a dependent variable and the difference in purchase behavior patterns were observed. Lastly, based on the mood-congruent effect of consumer purchase intentions, it was confirmed that power influences weather, and the weather and mood are influenced by each other, as also manifested in empirical studies. In particular, the power group had a more significant effect than the powerless group, and the positive mood and weather played a big role for consumers’ intention to purchase luxury goods. Therefore, this study can contribute both theoretically and practically to prepare appropriate marketing strategy plans based on weather and consumer roles—power and powerless.

Cescutti-Butler, Luisa. "Powerless responsibility : women's experiences of caring for their late preterm baby/babies." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2017. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/29670/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the experiences of women who are caring for late preterm baby/babies (LPBs). These women’s experiences are especially relevant to examine, as the number of babies born late preterm is rising. Traditionally mothers and their LPBs have been studied under the umbrella of the general preterm infant population, with all experiences extrapolated from within this group. Whilst there is a growing body of literature related to late preterm babies, the focus is on physiology and physical needs. There is minimal research exploring women's experiences of caring for a late preterm baby and their views largely unknown. My aim was to privilege women's experiences, therefore a feminist approach to research was utilised. A feminist lens offered me an opportunity of understanding the world of women who care for LPBs, and what I learned from their experiences. To obtain in depth perspectives, individual qualitative interviews in two phases were carried out, with a purposefully selected sample of fourteen women who were caring for a baby or babies within the late preterm gestation in South West England. Template Analysis linked to Birth Territory Theory (BTT) was carried out to identify key issues and experiences of women. The findings indicate women who become mothers’ of late preterm babies have a complex journey. It is one which begins with separation, with babies being cared for in unfamiliar and highly technical environments where the perceived experts are healthcare professionals. Women’s needs are side-lined in favour of their baby/babies, and they are required to mother with ‘powerless responsibility’. Institutional and professional barriers to mothering/caring are numerous. The study recommends organisations and healthcare professionals listen to women, hear their stories and use their experiences of mothering/caring to direct developments in practice. Professionals need to accept late preterm babies do not belong to an institution and to the professionals that work within it, but instead recognise a mother’s prime relationship is with her baby and thus work with women to facilitate autonomous mother-work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to examine the role of language in persuasion. In other words, are some language styles or variations more persuasive than others? Specifically, powerful and powerless language were studied. Powerless language contains hedges, hesitations, and tag questions. Powerful language does not contain these markers. The study involved having students listen to a message advocating comprehensive examinations for college seniors. Half the students participated in a simultaneous exercise while listening to the message to distract them from the central merits of the arguments. The remaining half simply listened to the message. Students then filled out questionnaires designed to measure their perceptions of the message and speaker. Regardless of whether subjects were distracted or not, those that heard the powerful language message were more positive towards the speaker than those that heard the powerless language message.<br>Department of Psychological Science

In ASME 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2013-66341.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, the design of MEMS based implantable device is proposed which does not require electrical power for the device functioning. The device is designed to mimic the human ossicular system and is aimed at restoring hearing by implanting it in patients with a damaged or surgically removed ossicular chain. The model involves multiple micro-beams considering the low cost and easy fabrication processes needed to realize the device. The solid mechanical and acoustic analyses for the MEMS based ossicular system are performed in COMSOL Multiphysics. Here, the device specifications are evaluated for the hearing frequency range 20Hz–20000Hz. The device delivers the maximum pressure gain of 10 dB is obtained at 5500 Hz. Further, the total displacement of 14*10−6 mm is obtained at the oval window for sound pressure level of 90 dB, using this device. The maximum weight of the whole system is approximately 33.7 mg and is in relevance with the human ossicular system. The failure analysis is also done to assess the device’s strength at extreme sound pressure of 200 Pa i.e., when nearby jet airplane taking off. The results shown here demonstrate the potential of the MEMS actuators for application to middle-ear audio-prosthesis systems without power supply requirements.

Full text
Abstract:
In powersplit systems, which are state-of-the-art in tractor transmissions, the efficiency is of much higher importance than in most other vehicles. Key for high efficiency is to transmit only some power hydrostically and a high amount mechanically (Fig. 1 and 2) because the mechanical path has higher efficiency than the hydrostatic path. The hydrostatic path is needed to get an infinitely variable transmission. The understanding of powerloss characteristics of hydrostatic components helps to choose between swashplate and bent axis components. Best total efficiencies of 97% are key arguments for using 45° bent axis technology. This is the reason for a dominant use of 45° bent axis in powersplit transmissions. The search for further reduction in powerloss shows the weak volumetric efficiency at small displacements and high pressure levels. The compression loss is now a dominant subject for improvement. The paper will explain a new design for reduced compression loss, which can be applied to 45° bent axis units. The powerloss reduction will be shown for a powersplit transmission with 2 and 3 modes, which are state of the art today [7].
