Abstract:
This chapter considers the fear of shortage or scarcity. The Stalinist period was a time of scarcity in Eastern Europe. Shortages of even basic goods were common; accordingly, the West defined Communist regimes as places of extreme deprivation. But when confronted with the spectacle of scarce goods, refugees were anything but powerless. Asked about the material situation at home, they emphasized their cleverness, guile, and ability to work the system in order to acquire whatever they needed. Many told stories of buying and selling on the black market or even denouncing others to improve their

Abstract:
This chapter examines how popular culture portrays journalism's complex entanglements with power. Critics have pointed to the circumstances under which the press may violate the trust of the powerless and also how it can serve as an instrument of those who do hold political or economic power. Many popular culture works graphically depict the damage that the press can inflict on individuals, even if they might finally show journalists trying to do the right thing in the end. The negative effects of state control or censorship of the press are often dramatized, with the implication being that pr

Abstract:
Hesiod’s famous misogyny is part of a larger “poetics of the powerless” that pervades his epics. The poetic persona of his epics establishes a hierarchy of gender as a defense against his own situation of powerlessness, as presented in the poem. Hesiod subtly challenges those with power, whether in the human or divine realms, and condescends to those below him in the hierarchy, whether female or male. The poet’s portrayal of men and women is therefore the expression of a desire to reduce the power difference between himself and those around him in both the mortal and immortal spheres. As a res
