AbstractIn this chapter, we examine how marginalization and inequity—from international policy arenas to the household level and along the intersecting dimensions of gender, age, class and caste, religion, health and race—pose a major barrier to the development of sustainable food systems. The more transformative edges of the agroecology movement are advancing feminist, decolonial and anti-racist approaches that move the analysis from the centres of power to the margins where the hitherto excluded and oppressed are claiming power. Inequity manifests in overt discrimination as well as unequal access to resources and decision-making power at the household or farm level or to markets, credit, knowledge, governance, relations and other resources at the community or territorial level. In the absence of a focus on equity, efforts to advance agroecology risk exacerbating inequity.

AbstractModernization theory, which believes that “development equates economic growth” and changes in social, political, and cultural structures are the pathways for societies to become modernized, has been the predominant paradigm for the development of nations for decades. However, the model was met with a lot of criticism, and there was a movement to rethink the real meaning of development and well-being. Alternatives for development were proposed, but the most widely accepted paradigm is “sustainability” or “sustainable development” which was defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in the 1987 Brundtland Report (also called “Our Common Future”) as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Under this development paradigm, programs, initiatives, and actions aim not only at the preservation of a particular resource but also at other distinct areas: economic, environmental, and social - known as the three pillars of sustainability. The Brundtland Report has had a worldwide impact. “Agenda 21”, a comprehensive plan of action to build a global partnership for sustainable development to improve human lives and protect the environment, was adopted in the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by many other agendas, including the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) (2000–2015) and the present United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development or the 17 SDGs.

One of the non-traditional types of renewable energy is vortex energy, which arises when swirling flows of continuous media (e.g., liquid and gas) are formed and which can be converted into thermal energy, work, and also used to raise the temperature in some systems or to create a pressure gradient. Vortex structures are systematically found in many physical processes. In recent years, new aspects of studying the vortex have been considered. These aspects are associated with physical phenomena, which indicate the occurrence of nonlinear effects in liquid media. Vortex flows of continuous media are one of the most important and complex phenomena in the mechanics of liquids and gases. They are characterized by specific manifestations that are fundamentally different from the axial properties of the motion of the medium, such as the appearance of secondary flows.

This chapter describes technology that ensures reliable pumping of drainage and sewage water during electromechanical and hydro-mechanical transients from blocks of the hydroelectric power stations and pumping stations. As an alternative source of energy, it is proposed to use the energy of the liquid column of the pressure penstock of the stations, and as an auxiliary, to use jet pumps. Transmission of energy to the suction stream is carried out without direct usage of electrical and mechanical energy. During total shutdown of electric power, reliable evacuation of drainage and seepage water and reduction the influence of electromechanical and hydro-mechanical transients on power equipment and pipelines can be ensured with the use of self-regulating jet pumps over a period of several days; this cannot be accomplished by any other pump. The scientific results of the research are recommended to allow efficient use of water and energy resources and to ensure reliable operation of the power equipment of stations, especially in the events of sudden power outages.
