Abstract:
<span>Transmission line is one of the important elements in the process of power transfer from the source of generation to the consumer. In order to analyze the performance of a transmission line, it has to be represented by an equivalent model with suitable circuit parameters at a per phase basis. The line models are used to measure voltages, currents and the amount of power flow depending on the line length. Transmission line performance is determined by the voltage regulation and its efficiency under their normal operating conditions. In this study, a systematic approach was developed in order to assists the lecturers in teaching this important topic to the students despite so many complicated mathematical equations involved in the calculation. With the aid of Graphical User Interface (GUI), the performance of transmission line can be determined and monitored due to the change of line parameters. The results obtained could assist the lecturers in delivering the concept of engineering in a more systematic approach. On top of that, it could also assist the power system utility in planning the transmission line that needed to be installed in the system.</span>

Abstract:
In this paper, quasi-oppositional teaching-learning based optimization (QOTLBO) is introduced and successfully applied for solving an optimal power flow (OPF) problem in power system incorporating flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The main drawback of the original teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) is that it gives a local optimal solution rather than the near global optimal one in limited iteration cycles. In this paper, opposition based learning (OBL) concept is introduced to improve the convergence speed and simulation results of TLBO. The effectiveness of the proposed method implemented with MATLAB and tested on modified IEEE 30-bus system in four different cases. The simulation results show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed QOTLBO algorithm over other methods like conventional BBO and hybrid biogeography-based optimization (HDE-BBO). This method gives better solution quality in finding the optimal parameter settings for FACTS devices to solve OPF problems. The simulation study also shows that using FACTS devices, it is possible to improve the quality of the electric power supply thereby providing an economically attractive solution to power system problems.

Abstract:
This article presents a novel improved teaching learning based optimization (I-TLBO) technique to solve economic load dispatch (ELD) problem of the thermal plant without considering transmission losses. The proposed methodology can take care of ELD problems considering practical nonlinearities such as ramp rate limit, prohibited operating zone and valve point loading. The objective of economic load dispatch is to determine the optimal power generation of the units to meet the load demand, such that the overall cost of generation is minimized, while satisfying different operational constraints. I-TLBO is a recently developed evolutionary algorithm based on two basic concepts of education namely teaching phase and learning phase. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified on test system with equality and inequality constraints. Compared with the other existing techniques demonstrates the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:
This study proposes an algorithm to allocate different types of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) in power systems. The main objective of this study is to maximize profit by minimizing the system’s operating cost including FACTS devices (FDs) installation cost. Dynamic and steady state operating restrictions with loads uncertainty are included in the problem formulation. The overall problem is solved using both teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) technique for attaining the optimal allocation of the FDs as main-optimization problem and matpower interior point solver (MIPS) for optimal power flow (OPF) as the sub-optimization problem. The validation of the proposed approach is verified by applying it to test system of 59-bus; Simplified 14-Generator model of the South East Australian power system.

Abstract:
Aim. The aim of the research is the comparative study of literary cat characters in Children’s Literature texts in Greek and Spanish and their instructive function in the transmission of social stereotypes. Methods. The research subscribes to the field of Literary Animal Studies based on the theory of Children’s Literature (Lukens, 1999) and through the intercultural perspective of Comparative Children’s Literature (O’Sullivan, 2005). Published children’s books from Greece, Spain and Spanish-speaking America were compared using textual analysis methods of Imagology (Beller & Leersen, 2007). Stereotyped variants were identified and organized in categories related to name, physical appearance, gender, behavior, and function of literary cat characters. Results. After examining a corpus of 37 books, 23 in Greek and 17 in Spanish (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Spain), textual analysis findings were compared, organized, and classified by language, country and readers’ age groups to locate that literary cat characters are usually pets or feral, and they remain consistently stereotyped as anthropomorphic and subversive. Cats with seven lives and magical powers are common perceptions, dominating in both cultural contexts, stereotypes extended to strong superstitions about black cats. Conclusions. In Children's Literature texts, cats are linguistically, literally, and socially defined literary constructs, can have usually human-like features, intercultural influences, and are potentially shaped by intertextual relations. They serve also as a narrative motif for the transmission of social values about non-human animals and the textual familiarization of nonadult readers with society’s cultural stereotypes.

Abstract:
Subject area Intergenerational transmission is a paramount managerial and patrimonial issue. Although planning and governance tools are being developed and spread in business, the handling of emotions often remains the key to a successful process. It is within the framework of the paternalistic Moroccan society that we are led to question the psychology and emotions of the stakeholders in the transmission of this small services business. Study level/applicability Masters students in Family Business, Management Science, Entrepreneurship, Small Business Management. Case overview After 19 years of existence, Moroccan Shipping is confronted at the beginning of 2010 to the issue of the sustainability of the family business. The founder directs his affair with an iron fist, and his sons, who were educated abroad, are determined not to get fooled. The father claims he wishes to be relieved from daily operations and handover part of his responsibilities to his second son. At the same time, the youngest doesn't feel like he fits in the present firm's configuration and is ready to quit. Expected learning outcomes This case study will lead users to work on several managerial dimensions of small family businesses in emerging economies. At first, the entrepreneur's traits might be highlighted, as they deeply affect the way the succession process may be handled. However, as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) specificity, the Moroccan family system will be taken into consideration to better analyse both the incumbent and the successor behaviours. Management tools may then be discussed to help with the transfer of both power and ownership in family businesses. Supplementary materials Teaching Notes are available for educators only. Abstract:
In today’s teaching environment where students’ main focus is on getting a high mark for a class, deep understanding has taken a backseat. Being able to answer as many exam preparation questions as possible and fulfilling all the criteria on an assignment will guarantee success. “I deserve a higher mark because I worked hard in this class,” are the arguments one hears after the final marks are published. How about understanding the new material presented in the class? Engineering sketching and journaling have been hailed by experienced engineers as tools to enhance thinking and communication. The authors of the paper report about their utilization as teaching tools to foster deep understanding in a course on construction equipment and methods. While topics like equipments economics, power transmission and safety benefit from graphing in two-axis coordinate systems, understanding the best path of a backhoe bucket during a trenching operation is impossible to describe in words. Of course, understanding has several components: a) WHY do we use a backhoe excavator and not a trencher, b) WHAT are the possible three link motion paths and their related force vectors, c) HOW can the operator control the path of the bucket, and d) WHAT-IF there are utilities buried in the ground?

Abstract:
This article is a comparative study of the education system in minority languages between Catalonia and Australia from a legal standpoint. Catalonia has a complex legislation: National Constitution, Statute of Autonomy, Regional Laws, a strong legal framework, a language always alive as a political instrumentto get the power. Australia has not a legal framework in this area and has a confused planning system. In Europe, the Council of Europe has been in charge of the protection of human rights.Australia signed and ratified some International Conventions which are not a strong legal basis to claim an education system in aborigines’ languages. The Catalan Law on Linguistic Normalizationn. 7 of 1983, replaced by the Law on Linguistic Policy n. 1 of1998, has, among the other purposes, also that to stimulate the use of Catalan as language of education in all levels of teaching. The school has a fundamental importance for the transmission of the culture of minorities. If the educational systems didn’t have any regime of teaching in the mother tongue all policies are not efficient.

Abstract:
A representative cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the knowledge about toxoplasmosis prevention, transmission routes, clinical features, and who can be infected among students from seven teaching areas of the State University of Maringá, Southern Brazil, using a self-administrated questionnaire. A total of 600 students participated in the study, 86 students did not answer or did not know about toxoplasmosis (14.3%), the other 514 (86.2%) had some information about toxoplasmosis and answered the questionnaires and most of them are unaware of the routes of transmission and prevention of this zoonosis. Less than 50% considered correct the options "do not feed cats with raw meat" (39.9%), "eat only well-cooked meats" (40.1%), and "ingest only filtered or boiled water" (42.6%). Also, misconceptions about prevention were identified when statements such as "doing fecal exams regularly" were considered correct by 20.0% of participants. Students' average of correct answers in the health and biological areas was statistically higher than in other areas. The agricultural sciences area had the worst performance. In conclusion, there is a critical need for effective educational programs to increase the population's awareness of toxoplasmosis since correct preventive practices are critical to control and reduce one disease's infection without definitive treatment.

Abstract:
Accepting the role for cognitive transmission means recognizing that humans are not empty slate at birth. The basic assumption is that every human being is born by bringing fitrah and equipped with various potentials and abilities that are different from other humans. With that provision, he then learns: first through things that can be sensed by using his five senses as a window of knowledge; then gradually from things that can be sensed to the abstract, and from what can be seen to be understood. This study aims to describe the concept of cognitive learning processes in Islamic perspectives between contradictions and contradictions with the western cognitive learning concept. From the results of the discussion it was concluded that: cognitive learning and teaching are more responsive to the power of their instincts because they are purely related to the ability to develop rational abilities (reason). Many found contradictions and defects in their theories, so that revisions and emerging new theories of cognitive succession. While in Islam there is only one verse "And Allah takes you out of your mother's stomach in a state of not knowing anything, and He gives you hearing, sight and heart, so that you are grateful" (An Nahl: 78) is able to break the concept of response to the instinctive power in terms this is called scular and in Islam there has never been a secular tradition that separates religion from life

Abstract:
The electric power policies in Nigeria and South Africa are considered the governments’ intention to provide quality and affordable electricity to the people. A comparative study on the electric power policies focuses on the similarities and differences in the policy approaches, the policy issues that affect electrification, and the impact of the policy issues in achieving the goal of universal access to quality and affordable electricity power in both countries. The methodological approach allows for an in depth textual study on the electric power policy documents in both countries. In Nigeria, the government intends to address the massive demand-supply imbalance and achieve the goal of electrification through reforms that focus on private sector-led growth in the sub-sector. In South Africa, the identification of electrification as a public problem by the post apartheid government leads to an integrated policy framework that focuses on balancing economic concerns with social and environmental considerations. The study identifies electricity provision as a social welfare responsibility of the governments in both countries and examines the policy issues in the context of public welfare. In Nigeria, the policy issues are found to be self serving and not in line with sustainable public interest, given the socio-economic challenges. As a result they, exert less impact on achieving the goal of universal access to quality and affordable electricity in the country. In South Africa, good governance in the sub-sector has enabled the identification of policy issues in line with sustainable public interests of social equity, poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability; and government using public administration agencies to play a key role in service delivery. Recommendations of the study mainly derive from the South African experience on electrification, and are intended to offer some policy-lessons to Nigeria in the sub-sector. The study contributes to new knowledge in the discipline of public administration by opening up new vistas for a comparative analysis of electric power policy issues in both countries in the context of public welfare. Besides, a comparative study on electrification in Nigeria and South Africa from a policy angle contributes to the existing knowledge base in the discipline.

Full text
Abstract:
Power line carrier (PLC) is one of the communication and load control (C&LC) techniques employed in direct load control. A PLC is, within itself, a communication system. It utilizes power transmission line as a medium of transmitting control functions, and relaying. High frequencies, in the order of 30 to 300 kHz, are used. Power line carrier systems are, at present, the most attractive C&LC systems. Recently, dispersed generation - photovoltaics, wind energy, small scale hydro - is introduced to power systems. The introduction of small scale dispersed generation sources degrades the performance of PLC systems by injecting dc-ac inverter related harmonics into the distribution lines. These harmonics interfere with PLC signals. Thus load control functions assigned to PLC systems are affected. It is the purpose of this research to study how a PLC signal propagates through the transmission line and how it is affected by the harmonic interference. An experiment is conducted using a distribution network provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory discussions, and conclusions are presented.

Abstract:
The evolution of engineering education is driven, in part, by the tools available. This paper examines how a relatively new tool, that of parametric modeling, can be implemented in the presentation of an introductory course in the design and analysis of mechanisms. The combined graphical and computational power of a parametric modeling system provides an ideal starting point to introduce a variety of common concepts. This paper examines how parametric modeling can be used to analyze mechanism mobility (including degrees-of-freedom, Grashof type, transmission angles, and limits of motion), and velocity (including mechanical advantage) in planar linkages. The use of parametric modeling as a tool for teaching linkage synthesis is also reviewed. The primary purpose of the paper is to briefly demonstrate the power of parametric modeling and how this tool can form a foundation for mechanism education. The ability to rapidly create and change parametric sketches of mechanisms allows the student much more opportunity to study “what if” scenarios and recognize trends in mechanism analysis and design. The visual and interactive nature of the tool also has excellent compatibility with the highly computer literate background of the modern student. Parametric modeling has the necessary capability to become the paradigm for mechanisms instruction in the 21st century.
