Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe treatise Perspective Pictorum Architectorum is one of the main reasons that have consecrated brother coadjutor Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709) as the most renowned artist of the Society of Jesus. Despite having served painters, geometricians and architects of four continents as a source of instruction and visual repertoire during the Late Baroque, it still remains –save honorable exceptions– as a superficially read text. Our examination of its contents analyzes how the plates were grouped to fulfill the different functions which the treatise was meant to accomplish, i.e.: praising Jesuit architecture and the one designed by Pozzo himself; being effective as a workshop manual; and, then as now, drawing attention to its character as an object of bibliophilia.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the act of slavery that happened in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. The characters that are involved are Pozzo as the master and Lucky as his slave. By analyzing how Pozzo oppresses Lucky, it reflects the act of slavery that also happened in reality in the 20th century when the story was written. This study is a qualitative descriptive method using the sociology of literature approach to reveal the connection between the situations in the play with the situations of the world in the 20th century. The data of this research are collected from the utterances and dialogues of the characters in the text play Waiting for Godot. The result showed that the act of slavery acted by Pozzo and Lucky also happened in the 20th century before, during, and after World War II in the 1940s. An upper-class society would enslave and oppress a lower-class society at the time because they had power and money.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Based on the documents preserved in the Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire, the private correspondence between Karl Nesselrode, the head of the Foreign Policy Department, and ambassador Carlo Pozzo di Borgo and the main milestones of their biographies are analyzed through the prism of their joint activities in the field of foreign policy. Their epistolary heritage is very extensive. A comparative analysis of the personalities of K. Nesselrode and C. Pozzo di Borgo reveals the peculiarities of their respective characters and show both the political and human qualities of these two bright and outstanding diplomats from a new angle. Nesselrode's attitude towards Pozzo di Borgo allows one to take a completely different look at the personality of the former, who was not at all “selflessly ready to fade away”, timid, and weak-willed. The most important quality that they had in common was moderation in everything, based on pragmatism and rationalism. It was practicality, elevated to a principle, that forced both men to consistently defend the “system of moderation”, rejecting extremes of any kind, adhering to a moderate foreign policy course. Both of them strived to preserve peace and stability in Europe. In the service of the Russian Empire, they formed a fruitful diplomatic tandem.

Abstract:
Considered within the context of Jesuit theatre and liturgy, and within the broader culture of spectacle and ritual in the era of Counter-Reform, the works of art and architecture commissioned by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century can be read as “theatres” of religious performance. This concept is given an ideal case study in the work of Jesuit artist Andrea Pozzo (1642–1709). In this essay I present Pozzo’s work within the context of ritual and prayer for which it was produced, focusing on two of his religious scenographies and two of his lesser-known painting projects. As I consider their use of allegory, emblems and symbols, visual narratives, spatial illusions, and architecture, I argue that both the scenographies and the permanent church decorations achieve persuasion through the engagement of the observer as a performer in a ritual involving both internal and external performance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
George Ent (FRS 1663), a distinguished physician, was in Rome in 1636, visited the notable collector Cassiano dal Pozzo and saw his Paper Museum. After he returned to London he carried on a correspondence with Cassiano in letters of more than ordinary interest. Cassiano had sent Ent specimens of fossil wood and a table made from fossil wood. They had come from the estates at Acquasparta belonging to Prince Federico Cesi, the founder of the Accademia dei Lincei. The specimens and the table were shown to early meetings of The Royal Society and had a significant part in the developing debate on the origin of fossils. The letters also record exchanges of books between London and Rome. Among medical matters there is news of William Harvey and his works.

Genomic instability and nuclear architecture in cancer Genomic instability is a hallmark of cancer. It drives the evolution of cancer cells having a genome that differs from that of normal cells. It enables the development of cell clones and cell-to-cell heterogeneity within the tumour and between the tumour and its metastatic site(s). Here Professor Sabine Mai and Aline Rangel-Pozzo, at the CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute and The University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, discuss genomic instability in relation to 3D spatial organisation of telomeres.
