One of the reasons for the weakened state of English oak Quercus robur L. in coppice oak forests of the southern forest-steppe of European Russia is trunk and butt rots, the causative agents of which are the representatives of pathogenic polypore fungi (PPF). This article is devoted to the study of the state of oak stands due to the prevalence of PPF on the oak. The research was carried out in the south-western part of the Central Russian Upland in the seasons of 2009−2017. Most valuable cured products from Iberian pigs come from pure bred animals raised for a final grazing-fattening period where pigs eat mainly acorns, a low protein energy rich fruit. Neutron powder-diffraction-based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) are reported from the new wide-angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectrometer was run in white-beam mode with no Fermi chopper. The PDF patterns of Ni and Al2O3were refined using the PDFfit method and the results compared with data collected at the NPDF diffractometer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The resulting fits are of high quality, demonstrating that quantitatively reliable powder diffraction data can be obtained from ARCS when operat

We examined the cross-regulation of signaling between ACTH-and platelet-activating factor (PAF)-mediated steroidogenesis in the perfused guinea pig adrenal gland. Our method of in situ perfusion using an artificial medium can evaluate whether cortisol secretion in response to ACTH and PAF is interactive. Treating adrenal glands with 100 pg/ml ACTH diminished the subsequent cortisol response to 10 nM PAF. By contrast, PAF resulted in subsequent potentiation of ACTH-induced cortisol secretion. Beginning in 2006, a survey of two related Phytophthora species, P. multivora and P. plurivora, was performed in the Czech Republic. Both pathogens were distributed throughout a broad range of environments including forest and riparian stands and probably became naturalised in the country. The two species differed in their frequency and elevational distribution. P. multivora was less frequent, but commonly occurred in the lowest regions such as Central Bohemia and South Moravia, i.e. areas which generally exhibit a high level of invasion. In order to achieve the flexibility and miniaturization of orbital angular momentum (OAM) fiber coupler, it is necessary to continuously design and optimize the base fiber to cooperate with the efficient transmission of multiplexed beam. It is more advantageous to use the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) instead of ring fiber in the coupler design. We have proposed a new fiber based on circular PCF structure to support high performance OAM modes transmission. The optimal parameters are selected to realize the stable transmission of 4 OAM mode groups with high mode quality. In the wavelength range

This study explored the potential of pulsed electric field (PEF) as an alternative wine-aging method in four Xinomavro red wines with the implementation of several wood chips (apricot, peach, apple, cherry, acacia, and oak trees). The evolution of total polyphenol content (TPC) and sensory properties of the wines were investigated. Sensory evaluation revealed that PEF treatment increased volatile compound extraction from each wood chip, thereby enhancing the overall quality of the wines. Radiocarbon dates have been obtained from a log-coffin burial excavated in 1864 by Canon William Greenwell from a ditched round barrow at Scale House, near Rylstone, North Yorkshire. The oak tree-trunk coffin had contained an extended body wrapped in a wool textile. The body had entirely decayed and there were no other extant grave goods. In the absence of other grave goods, Greenwell attributed the burial to the Bronze Age because it lay under a ditched round barrow and had similarities with log-coffin burials from Britain and Denmark. This attribution has not been questioned since 1864 despi

In this work, bending-induced deterioration of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in ring core fiber (RCF), photonic crystal fiber (PCF), and vortex fiber (VF) was theoretically investigated: Bending losses, coupling losses, and intermodal crosstalk at the interface between straight and bent optical fibers were investigated from the modal analysis of those three types of OAM mode fibers. In addition, the degradation of a topological charge number of an OAM mode due to the bending-induced birefringence and horizontal mode asymmetry was also investigated.
