Abstract:
Purpose Building Information Modelling (BIM) is becoming the new norm in the AEC industry and also part of many construction project management (CPM) programmes. The purpose of this paper is to address the difficulty and challenges in walking the narrow line between an industry-ready BIM and a BIM that is good for student learning and offers a realistic and practical, but simultaneously achievable, learning environment. Design/methodology/approach An action research was conducted in an undergraduate CPM education setting. Findings Key challenges encountered were availability of appropriate teaching and learning resources for BIM; finding the balance between theory and practice, technology and process, and traditional and emerging CPM methods; and facilitating staff’s professional development. Closer look was given to the teaching and learning resources for BIM. Theoretical resources that are available for education in the form of books, articles and websites are easy and straightforward to locate. Likewise, a good share of various tools are available for educational purposes. On the other hand, actual building models represent a challenge in terms of preparing and optimising usage of the model for high-quality educational purposes. Several different approaches for obtaining BIM resources were identified with various challenges and benefits. Originality/value The results and recommendations will assist educators to better understand and overcome the practical challenges related to BIM education, especially those related to teaching and learning resources.

Abstract:
Abstract The Michigan Diaries (MI Diaries) project was developed from late March to early April of 2020, in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. MI Diaries is a longitudinal sociolinguistic project, collecting “audio diaries” from participants throughout the pandemic and beyond. As a research project designed to obtain personal narratives from a time of deep anxiety and pain, and during a time where face-to-face data collection was not feasible, MI Diaries was confronted from the outset with a substantial set of both ethical and practical considerations. In this paper, we describe some of these challenges, and our false starts and eventual solutions in response. Throughout, we highlight decisions and methods that may be applicable for future researchers conducting remote fieldwork, navigating a speech community during a disaster, or both.

Abstract:
PurposeMuslim tourists participating in halal tourism activities represent a valuable niche market for global tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to clarify the concepts of halal tourism and Islamic tourism and to draw attention to some conceptual and practical challenges in the halal tourism industry.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a critical assessment of the literature in this field. To differentiate the concepts and to discuss practical and conceptual challenges, the authors found some references by reviewing the existing definitions in related literature and the primary source of the concepts which is Holy Book of Islam, Quran.FindingsThe terms “intention” and “Islamic motivation” can be used to differentiate Islamic tourism and halal tourism. The authors suggest calling hotels that provide good and services in halal tourism industry as “halal hotels” and tourists as “Muslim tourists”. One of the leading practical challenges in halal tourism is having lack of halal standards, especially for hotels. As the way Muslims understand and adapt their lives to Islam is quite different, which means this market is not homogenous, the authors suggest that halal hotels should be scaled through different qualifications in different countries.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on literature review, and it lacks primary research.Practical implicationsCurrent paper stresses the need for consistent use of Islamic-related tourism terms in industry. Hotel companies should have halal certifications that will provide assurance to customers. It is highly important for hotel companies to inform their target guests about the location of hotel before arriving at hotel. This is because halal hotels and other hotels are usually located in resort destination, especially in Turkey.Originality/valueThis paper is one of the leading papers that differentiates Islamic tourism and halal tourism concepts. It also provides several conceptual and practical issues in halal tourism industry.

Abstract:
This paper was developed in the context of the discussion about the identification of boundaries in translation practice. Taking into account the postmodern theories of language, I try to understand whether it is possible to define, even in face of new conceptions of language, culture, subject and translation, reasonably stable characteristics of the translation practice. Some rewriting practices presented as traslations, but which, in my opinion, subvert excessively the original text pose a challenge for the definition of such boundaries. In this thesis, I analize three different translation projects which openly uphold a particular political agenda, in order to verify to which extent they are distanced from the definition of translation as the closest possible representation of a foreign text in a target language. The projects studied here are: feminist translations, postcolonial translations and Lawrence Venuti´s minoritizing project. This analysis aims at understanding the ethical and political motivations of the projects at issue and their main strategies. The pursuit of a specific conceptual and practical field for translation is linked to an ethical concern at which the reader is the focus of the discussion.

Chevva, Konda Reddy. "Practical Challenges in the Method of Controlled Lagrangians." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28877.

Full text
Abstract:
The method of controlled Lagrangians is an energy shaping control technique for underactuated Lagrangian systems. Energy shaping control design methods are appealing as they retain the underlying nonlinear dynamics and can provide stability results that hold over larger domain than can be obtained using linear design and analysis. The objective of this dissertation is to identify the control challenges in applying the method of controlled Lagrangians to practical engineering problems and to suggest ways to enhance the closed-loop performance of the controller. This dissertation describes a procedure for incorporating artificial gyroscopic forces in the method of controlled Lagrangians. Allowing these energy-conserving forces in the closed-loop system provides greater freedom in tuning closed-loop system performance and expands the class of eligible systems. In energy shaping control methods, physical dissipation terms that are neglected in the control design may enter the system in a way that can compromise stability. This is well illustrated through the "ball on a beam" example. The effect of physical dissipation on the closed-loop dynamics is studied in detail and conditions for stability in the presence of natural damping are discussed. The control technique is applied to the classic "inverted pendulum on a cart" system. A nonlinear controller is developed which asymptotically stabilizes the inverted equilibrium at a specific cart position for the conservative dynamic model. The region of attraction contains all states for which the pendulum is elevated above the horizontal plane. Conditions for asymptotic stability in the presence of linear damping are developed. The onlinear controller is validated through experiments. Experimental cart damping is best modeled using static and Coulomb friction. Experiments show that static and Coulomb friction degrades the closed-loop performance and induces limit cycles. A Lyapunov-based switching controller is proposed and successfully implemented to suppress the limit cycle oscillations. The Lyapunov-based controller switches between the energy shaping nonlinear controller, for states away from the equilibrium, and a well-tuned linear controller, for states close to the equilibrium. The method of controlled Lagrangians is applied to vehicle systems with internal moving point mass actuators. Applications of moving mass actuators include certain spacecraft, atmospheric re-entry vehicles, and underwater vehicles. Control design using moving mass actuators is challenging; the system is often underactuated and multibody dynamic models are higher dimensional. We consider two examples to illustrate the application of controlled Lagrangian formulation. The first example is a spinning disk, a simplified, planar version of a spacecraft spin stabilization problem. The second example is a planar, streamlined underwater vehicle.<br>Ph. D.

Paredes, Oliva Ignasi. "Addressing practical challenges for anomaly detection in backbone networks." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/129512.

Full text
Abstract:
Network monitoring has always been a topic of foremost importance for both network operators and researchers for multiple reasons ranging from anomaly detection to tra c classi cation or capacity planning. Nowadays, as networks become more and more complex, tra c increases and security threats reproduce, achieving a deeper understanding of what is happening in the network has become an essential necessity. In particular, due to the considerable growth of cybercrime, research on the eld of anomaly detection has drawn signi cant attention in recent years and tons of proposals have been made. All the same, when it comes to deploying solutions in real environments, some of them fail to meet some crucial requirements. Taking this into account, this thesis focuses on lling this gap between the research and the non-research world. Prior to the start of this work, we identify several problems. First, there is a clear lack of detailed and updated information on the most common anomalies and their characteristics. Second, unawareness of sampled data is still common although the performance of anomaly detection algorithms is severely a ected. Third, operators currently need to invest many work-hours to manually inspect and also classify detected anomalies to act accordingly and take the appropriate mitigation measures. This is further exacerbated due to the high number of false positives and false negatives and because anomaly detection systems are often perceived as extremely complex black boxes. Analysing an issue is essential to fully comprehend the problem space and to be able to tackle it properly. Accordingly, the rst block of this thesis seeks to obtain detailed and updated real-world information on the most frequent anomalies occurring in backbone networks. It rst reports on the performance of di erent commercial systems for anomaly detection and analyses the types of network nomalies detected. Afterwards, it focuses on further investigating the characteristics of the anomalies found in a backbone network using one of the tools for more than half a year. Among other results, this block con rms the need of applying sampling in an operational environment as well as the unacceptably high number of false positives and false negatives still reported by current commercial tools. On the whole, the presence of ampling in large networks for monitoring purposes has become almost mandatory and, therefore, all anomaly detection algorithms that do not take that into account might report incorrect results. In the second block of this thesis, the dramatic impact of sampling on the performance of well-known anomaly detection techniques is analysed and con rmed. However, we show that the results change signi cantly depending on the sampling technique used and also on the common metric selected to perform the comparison. In particular, we show that, Packet Sampling outperforms Flow Sampling unlike previously reported. Furthermore, we observe that Selective Sampling (SES), a sampling technique that focuses on small ows, obtains much better results than traditional sampling techniques for scan detection. Consequently, we propose Online Selective Sampling, a sampling technique that obtains the same good performance for scan detection than SES but works on a per-packet basis instead of keeping all ows in memory. We validate and evaluate our proposal and show that it can operate online and uses much less resources than SES. Although the literature is plenty of techniques for detecting anomalous events, research on anomaly classi cation and extraction (e.g., to further investigate what happened or to share evidence with third parties involved) is rather marginal. This makes it harder for network operators to analise reported anomalies because they depend solely on their experience to do the job. Furthermore, this task is an extremely time-consuming and error-prone process. The third block of this thesis targets this issue and brings it together with the knowledge acquired in the previous blocks. In particular, it presents a system for automatic anomaly detection, extraction and classi cation with high accuracy and very low false positives. We deploy the system in an operational environment and show its usefulness in practice. The fourth and last block of this thesis presents a generalisation of our system that focuses on analysing all the tra c, not only network anomalies. This new system seeks to further help network operators by summarising the most signi cant tra c patterns in their network. In particular, we generalise our system to deal with big network tra c data. In particular, it deals with src/dst IPs, src/dst ports, protocol, src/dst Autonomous Systems, layer 7 application and src/dst geolocation. We rst deploy a prototype in the European backbone network of G EANT and show that it can process large amounts of data quickly and build highly informative and compact reports that are very useful to help comprehending what is happening in the network. Second, we deploy it in a completely di erent scenario and show how it can also be successfully used in a real-world use case where we analyse the behaviour of highly distributed devices related with a critical infrastructure sector.<br>La monitoritzaci o de xarxa sempre ha estat un tema de gran import ancia per operadors de xarxa i investigadors per m ultiples raons que van des de la detecci o d'anomalies fins a la classi caci o d'aplicacions. Tot i aix o, quan s'intenten desplegar aquestes solucions en entorns reals, algunes d'elles no compleixen alguns requisits fonamentals.

Abstract:
The main aims of this critical analysis are to demonstrate that the submitted seventeen papers comprise a body of work that satisfies the requirements for the degree of PhD by Published Works. Focusing on papers that have been most significant in my learning trajectory, the submission evaluates the contribution of the published works to the advancement of social work education and the current educational reform process in the UK. Together with exploring uncertainties and challenges that present barriers to improving qualifying education, the critical analysis considers how obstacles to development might be overcome. In addressing the submission's main theme of developing social work education the critical analysis focuses on three sub-themes that have been recurring areas of interest in my work: • The value and utility of key educational paradigms including reflective practice and evidence-based practice both from a theoretical perspective and based on learners' operational experience of these concepts; • Student experience of qualifying level social work education and different stakeholder perspectives on the quality and effectiveness of provision: • The challenges and opportunities for promoting social justice, producing critically reflective practitioners and delivering a functional training agenda. The submission begins with a thematic overview of my published works. This is followed in Chapter two by an analysis of values and theoretical ideas that have informed my research and publications. Chapter three outlines the origins of particular papers and discusses the interrelationship between the collected works. Chapter four critically evaluates the methodological approaches used in research projects on which papers are based. Chapter five presents a critical appraisal of the significance and originality of the corpus and its contribution to scholarship. The submission concludes by reflecting on my learning and indicating possible directions for future research and theoretical development.

Chamberlain, Benjamin Paul. "Practical challenges of learning and representation for large graphs." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/64783.

Full text
Abstract:
An ever-increasing amount of the humanity's information is being stored in large graphs. The world wide web, digital social networks, e-commerce platforms and chat networks now contain digital traces of the majority of living humans. Many of the most valuable companies ever created are dedicated to organising, managing and extracting useful information from large digital graphs. Machine learning has been shown to be an important tool for automating this task. Discovering scalable machine learning systems, to extract useful information from graphs, is a problem of great practical significance. Interesting graphs, such as the web graph, often contain more information than can be stored on a single computer, and so working with the raw data presents considerable challenges. Graph representations are often employed that encapsulate key properties of the underlying data and enable certain tasks to be performed efficiently, at the expense of others. Representations are chosen to balance time complexity, space complexity and predictive performance on a downstream task, such as labelling vertices with attributes. We are concerned with problems of extracting and inferring information from large graphs and applying the results in deployed commercial systems. The research revolves around two large-scale machine learning projects (1) A system for searching and organising data from social media graphs (2) A system to profile customers through their interactions with products on an e-commerce platform. We use representations of graphs to allow algorithms to be run faster, cheaper and more accurately. Doing so allows us to satisfy systems constraints that could not be achieved by operating directly on the raw data. We demonstrate how careful choices of representation can be used to improve machine learning performance on several real-world tasks. We do this under challenging industrial constraints such as real-time serving, runtime costs or maintainability.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to address corporate governance from both a practical as well as an academic perspective. It searches for solutions to self-interest and agency costs, problems that it is posited are innate to the anthropomorphism of the corporation and to the separation of management and ownership of widely held, publicly traded, corporations.<br>Practically, this dissertation is anchored in experience, garnered from empirical research, based on in depth and general surveys, as well as detailed interviews. It examines the workings of corporations, including their boards of directors, of gatekeepers, of checks and balances and of shareholders and the relative importance and rationale for the roles that they play. Based on the academic and empirical efforts it is posited that self-interest and the funneling syndrome, (a process whereby information required for decision making is constrained and managed by those in control), almost always predetermines the outcome of the corporate formal decision making process involving the board of directors. This facilitates abuse. When it occurs and there appears to be no accountability, confidence essential to the capital markets, quite understandably, suffers.<br>A hypothesis is advanced to explain the complexity of a potential failure of corporate governance through a relatively simple formula. It draws conclusions as to what is required to help address the challenges raised by the breakdown in effective corporate governance and to help instill greater investor confidence. A self-assessment mechanism to help quantify how effectively a corporation is dealing with corporate governance, both on an absolute basis (comparing itself year over year) and on a relative basis (compared to one's peers) is proffered. This tool of more effective corporate governance, seeks to identify the causes for breakdowns in corporate governance and to assist a board of directors in dealing more proactively with this challenge.

Makinwa, Akinlolu. "Challenges of disintergrating family life to youth ministry : a practical theological investigation." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71889.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The family as an indispensable social institution meant to serve as the first place of socialization, nurture and spiritual training ground for young people is disintegrating. The signs for disintegrating family life are evident and supported by statistics of high rates of divorce, domestic abuse and violence, juvenile delinquency caused by a lack of genuine nurturing of youth and unresolved family conflicts between husband and wife as well as between parents and children. This has become a global issue. This study therefore investigates the challenges of disintegrating family life to youth ministry from a global perspective by studying materials on global families and youth ministry. The aim of the study is to gain a conceptual understanding of the family, to identify the challenges contemporary families are currently facing, and to find ways in which youth ministry, with the help of young people, can respond to the challenges posed by disintegrating family life to their lives and thereby contribute to the reintegration of their present families while laying a good foundation for their future family for the glory of God and benefit of humanity. Since the family and youth are inseparable, the research studies the context of the disintegrating family, identifies causes and consequences of disintegrating family life as well as the challenges posed by disintegrating family life for youth ministry. Osmer‟s four practical theology questions are used to design this study. These are: what is going on, why is this going on, what ought to be going on, and how might we respond In light of the increase in family disintegration, the main research question is: What are the challenges of disintegrating family life to Youth Ministry? The aims of youth ministry are taken as the norm and these are: effective evangelism; comprehensive education that includes Christian education; financial education; health education; marriage and family life education, as well as pastoral care. The study argues that young people converted to Christ, taught and exposed to pastoral care can be active agents of change in their immediate and future family and thus becomes active agents of change in society. However, with millions of orphans, youth in refugee camps, children affected by divorce, and youth in child-headed families, can youth workers cope with the present and future challenges of disintegrating family life to youth ministry? The study proposed the God-bearing, relational and family-based-youth-ministry approach because the three approaches are deemed to be the most appropriate to enable youth ministry to deal with the challenges. Marriage and family life education is highly recommended as a prerequisite for contemporary evangelised and educated young people. This is to serve, firstly, as a reactive measure to help their immediate disintegrating family and secondly, to serve as a proactive measure to lay a solid foundation for the future family of contemporary youth. This, I hope, will be used by God to help curtail the vicious cycle of the disintegrating family life phenomenon and also bring relief to troubled youths, family and society.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die familie as `n noodsaaklike sosiale instelling wat bedoel is om te dien as die eerste plek van sosialisering, versorging en spirituele opleidingsgrond vir jongmense, is besig om te verbrokkel.

Paxton, Marie. "Agonistic democracy and the challenges of diversity : exploring practical applications of conflict mediation." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28695/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores whether, and how, theoretical concepts from agonistic democracy could be operationalised in order to mediate conflict in multicultural, pluralist society. It highlights three central themes of agonistic democracy: political contestation, contingency and necessary interdependency. It subsequently demonstrates the various ways in which these themes are employed, delineating three distinct agonistic approaches: the ‘perfectionist’ (as encapsulated by David Owen), the ‘adversarial’ (as represented by Chantal Mouffe), and the ‘inclusive’ (as symbolised by William Connolly and James Tully). The research then considers possible tensions between agonistic assumptions and further institutional consideration, and draws on new institutionalist literature to identify which kinds of institution could be compatible with agonistic democracy. It explores these through an experiment, which employs three distinct discussion frameworks, each representing a different agonistic approach. The research combines insights from the experiment and agonistic literature to gain a deeper insight into agonistic concepts and the potential for their operationalisation. It suggests that perfectionism is valuable in encouraging unity, adversarialism is effective in reviving passions, and inclusivity is useful in enhancing interactions between conflicting citizens. Finally, the research proposes an ‘agonistic day’ and demonstrates how a synthesis of all three approaches could mediate multicultural, pluralist conflict.

Abstract:
A metronome synchronisation paradigm was used to investigate possible interaction between P(erceptual)-centre location and initial mutation in Irish (Gaelic). A pilot study returned promising results in a subset of stimuli. Data later collected using only these stimuli differed from those of the pilot: participants exclusively synchronised metronome beats with the possessive particle preceding main lexical targets. In the pilot task, monosyllables as the minimal target, as opposed to exclusively disyllabic two-word possessive phrases in the modified task, may have focussed participants on these. This conditioning has been reinstated in a third version of the task by preceding target phrases with a dummy monosyllable.

Abstract:
Living systematic reviews are a relatively new approach to keeping the evidence in systematic reviews current by frequent surveillance and updating. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Evidence-based Practice Center Program recently commissioned a systematic review of plant-based treatments for chronic pain management. This white paper describes the team’s experience in implementing the protocol that was developed a priori, and reflects on the challenges faced and lessons learned in the process of developing and maintaining a living systematic review. Challenges related to scoping, conducting searches, selecting studies, abstracting data, assessing risk of bias, conducting meta-analysis, performing narrative synthesis, assessing strength of evidence, and generating conclusions are described, as well as potential approaches to addressing these challenges.

Abstract:
Developing countries continue to grapple with challenges in effectively accessing climate finance to support resilience efforts in meeting their targets for nationally determined contributions (NDCs), implementing national adaptation plans (NAPs) and addressing loss and damage due to climate change. Whilst the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) saw progress made towards delivering the USD 100 billion climate finance goal by 2023 at latest, and countries agreed on a way forward for the new post-2025 climate finance goal, this remains inadequate as annual adaptation costs in developing economies are estimated to reach between USD 155 to USD 330 billion by 2030.

Full text
Abstract:
The Knowledge, Evidence and Learning for Development (K4D) Programme, which started in 2016, comes to an end in September 2022. K4D is a programme funded by and for the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (initially with the Department for International Development, DFID, which was merged with the FCO in 2020). To reflect on the processes and approaches of learning that K4D enabled over the years, a special Working Paper series will be published. One important pillar of the programme was to facilitate learning processes through learning journeys. A total of 33 learning journeys took place during K4D. This summary looks back at the K4D concept, the learning journeys, the learning processes it supported, and the outcomes enabled. The paper finds that there is evidence that K4D learning journeys have helped enable sound, informed decision-making through collective understanding of issues and options, and through internal consensus on directions. Effective learning spaces were created and the methods used (including online tools for participation) were able to capture and share internal learning, foster internal connections, present external evidence and bring in other perspectives. However, success in enabling external alliances for decisions and change was more constrained, since most learning journeys engaged only in limited ways with external organisations. Further challenges were encountered when staff were redeployed to respond to political (Brexit) or international development (COVID-19, Ukraine) priorities.

Hasan, Abid, and Wahid bin Ahsan. Veterinary Care Challenges for Stray Animals in Bangladesh: Awareness, Logistics, and Policy Solutions. Userhub, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.58947/journal.hztr23.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the key challenges in providing veterinary care for stray animals in Bangladesh, using a mixed-methods approach. Data were collected through qualitative interviews with veterinarians, caregivers, and NGO representatives in Dhaka (n=13), and quantitative surveys from urban, suburban, and rural areas across the country (n=100). The findings reveal critical barriers, including low public awareness of zoonotic health risks, logistical difficulties in capturing and transporting animals, and financial constraints faced by caregivers. Additionally, weak policy enforcement and gaps in collaboration between the government and NGOs were identified as significant obstacles to effective stray animal management. The study highlights the need for targeted public awareness campaigns, mobile veterinary services, and stronger policy implementation to improve both public health and animal welfare outcomes. Practical recommendations are provided for policymakers, NGOs, and veterinarians to address the stray animal crisis across Bangladesh.

Williams, Anthony. Enabling Global Collaboration: How Open Source Leaders Are Confronting the Challenges of Fragmentation. The Linux Foundation, 2023. https://doi.org/10.70828/zosd4904.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s open source community is made up of millions of projects and contributors that are as diverse as they are numerous. This global range of projects means that open source initiatives gain the benefits of having many different approaches to solving solutions, but it also can lead to fragmented communities that duplicate efforts and bear extra costs and complexity. This report takes an in-depth look at these benefits and costs from the perspective of open source leaders around the world. The insights from each of the interviewees illustrate the complexities inherent to managing fragmentation in the open source world, from both a theoretical and practical standpoint. The discussion focuses on how fragmentation plays a role in the development of open source solutions, the integration of contributors around the world, and the governance of open source communities. It concludes with some key takeaways for collaboration and alignment.
