Abstract:
Purpose: Developing a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice. An original procedure for the course of the research process in management and quality sciences was presented. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature, as well as the model of the research process, five stages have been defined, which should be included in the procedure of the research process. They included: selection of the research subject, determination of the nature of the research, determination of the transparency of the research purpose, selection of the method of conducting the research, determination of the size of the studied sample. Findings: Taking into account the model of the research process, a procedure for conducting research was developed. Research limitations/implications: The developed procedure is a premise for conducting further research in the direction of assigning research methods and techniques to individual elements of the research process stages in management and quality sciences. Selection of appropriate methods and research techniques will translate into the verification of research hypotheses, such as and answers to research questions. Practical implications: First of all, it is important to develop a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice, and then, for individual stages of this process, assign appropriate research methods and techniques. Social implications: The author's procedure for the course of the research process presented in this article is a response to how to operationalize phenomena in the sciences on management and quality and thus translate into research related to Industry 4.0. Originality/value: The developed procedure for the course of the research process allows for detailed familiarization and carrying out of scientific research, and in particular for a precise presentation of the characteristics of the tested entity, dispelling doubts regarding the transparency of the conducted research, appropriate description of the method of conducting the research, and determining the size of the research sample.

Du, Rand Marlie. "Practical equation of state for non-spherical and asymmetric systems." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/16043.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study an equation of state has been developed for the specific purpose of representing systems of simple non-polar spherical and chain-like components and their mixtures for practical applications. To be applied in engineering calculations, the model has to be accurate, be able to represent mixtures with large size asymmetry without the use large binary interaction parameters, and be mathematically simple enough to ensure rapid computations. The model is developed through a sequential evaluation of the statistical mechanical theory of particles and the various approaches available to extend it to real fluid systems. The equation of state developed in this work models the real fluid systems as interacting with a highly simplified two step potential model. The repulsive interactions are represented by a newly developed simplified form of the hard sphere equation of state, capable of representing the known hard sphere virial coefficients and phase behaviour to a high degree of accuracy. This equation has a realistic closest packed limiting density in between the idealised hard sphere fluid random and crystal structure limits. The attractive interactions between the particles are incorporated into the model through a perturbation expansion represented in the form of a double summation perturbation approximation. The perturbation matrix was optimised to have the lowest order in density necessary to still be able to accurately represent real fluid properties. In a novel approach to obtain simple mixing rules that result in the theoretically correct second virial coefficient composition dependence, the perturbation matrix is constrained in such a manner that only the first perturbation term has a term that is first order in density. From a detailed evaluation of the various methods available to represent chain-like non-spherical systems it was finally concluded that the Perturbed Hard Chain Theory provided an ideal compromise between model simplicity and accuracy, and this method is used to extend the equation to chain-like systems. Finally the model is extended to fluid mixtures by uniquely developed mixing rules resulting in the correct mixture composition dependence both at low and high system densities. The newly developed equation of state is shown to be capable of representing the pure component systems to a comparable degree of accuracy as the generally applied equations of state for non-spherical systems found in the literature. The proposed equation is furthermore also shown equal or improve on the predictive ability of these models in the representation offluid mixtures consisting out of similar chainlike or size and energetic asymmetric components. Finally, the computational time required to model the behaviour of large multi-component fluid mixtures using the new equation of state is significantly shorter that that of the other semi-empirical equations of state currently available in the literature.

Ndoro, Mugove Chawapiwa. "Learner performance in integrated science process skills and attitudes in hands-on practical work versus virtual practical work." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26870.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study was conducted in an urban high school in Western Cape province of South Africa. The research study investigated the effect of virtual practical work on learner performance in science process skills and attitude, working with a non-random sample group of grade 10 physical sciences learners. In this experimental design research, the treatment group of 22 learners was taught the concept of 'phase change in matter' through virtual practical work. On the other hand, the control group was taught the same concept through hands-on practical. A pre- and post-test instrument of 30 multiple choice items on integrated science process skills was used to measure learners' performance. The test scores were statistically analysed using Quickcalcs, to compare the overall learner performance in the two groups, and also to compare learner performance in different categories of science process skills. A 12-item questionnaire was designed to test the learner s' attitude towards virtual and hands-on practical. The statistical t test analysis on the average scores indicated insignificant difference between the performance of the two groups, with a p value greater than 0,05. When learners' performance in different process skills categories were compared, t test scores revealed significant differences in some categories and non-significant differences in some categories. The questionnaire results indicated that the learners' attitude was biased towards hands-on practical work. The significance of this research study is that virtual practical can be used to develop some science process skills.

Abstract:
Includes abstract.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 79-83).
In the context of rising unemployment, an NGO called Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) was established to provide men who stand by the side of the road waiting to be offered jobs with job opportunities and skills. The purpose of the ethnographic study described here was to assess members‘ experiences and attitudes towards the work or income-earning opportunities introduced to members by MSR. The overall goal of the report was to assess why a large proportion of the work opportunities introduced to members were not taken up with great enthusiasm. After completion of the study, the researcher found that the day-labourers used three different labels ('locals', 'networking workers' and 'struggling foreigners') to describe themselves and other roadside workseekers.

Gerbay, Rémy. "The functions of arbitral institutions : theoretical representations and practical realities." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2014. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/8143.

Full text
Abstract:
While thousands of cross-border disputes are resolved each year through institutional arbitration, there appears to be little understanding of the role of arbitral institutions. In particular, very little academic scholarship has been produced on the nature of the functions exercised by arbitral institutions in the proceedings they administer. This thesis seeks to rectify this gap by (1) identifying in the literature conventional assumptions as to the functions of arbitral institutions in the institutional arbitration process; (2) critically assessing such conventional assumptions; and (3) offering a novel and more realistic representation of the functions of arbitral institutions. This thesis is principally based on a systematic study of the activities performed by over 40 international arbitration institutions in their administration of cases. This study also examines court decisions on the nature of the functions exercised by such institutions in some leading civil law and common law jurisdictions. The thesis finds that arbitration institutions are conventionally portrayed in the literature in one of two ways: According to a first representation, arbitral institutions are mere administrators with no decision-making power whatsoever. According to another representation, while institutions are occasionally called upon to exercise some measure of decision-making, measures taken by institutions remain immaterial because of their alleged ‗administrative‘/‗non-jurisdictional‘ nature. In both instances, it is conventionally assumed that, contrary to arbitrators, arbitral institutions should not be concerned by due process when they discharge their duties. This thesis argues that these two conventional representations are difficult to reconcile with the diverse reality of institutional arbitration. While some institutions have a very limited involvement in the arbitrations conducted under their auspices, others participate more actively in their resolution. The thesis therefore concludes that arbitral institutions can be more accurately described as ancillary participants in the adjudicative process which decisions, insofar as they may occasionally be outcome-determinative, should call upon the application of some due process standards.

Hamilton, Mary Lynn E. "The practical argument staff development process, school culture and their effects on teachers' beliefs and classroom practice." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184857.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study investigates the interaction among teachers' beliefs, their practices, and the practical argument staff development process in two schools and suggests how school culture may affect that interaction. The subjects for this study were the intermediate teachers from two of the schools participating in the OERI Study, A Study Teachers' Research-Based Instruction of Reading Comprehension (RIS). This study was designed to investigate the proposal in staff development/teacher change literature that conscious examination of beliefs facilitates teacher change. Furthermore, this study explores the importance of school culture to the success of a staff development program. Social interactivity may affect the change process. Data was gathered in a participant-observation process extending over an eight-month period. During that time, there were classroom and staff development process observations, formal and informal interviews with teachers and administrators, examination of audio/videotapes of events, dialogues with the research team, and documentation of each event with field notes. The findings are introduced through a description and interpretation of events in each of the two schools. They are established upon an understanding of how the participating teachers responded to change and to the staff development process, and how school culture affected those teachers and the process. The findings also incorporate the most recent research on teachers' beliefs, staff development, and school culture. They address the theory/practice dichotomy and its relation to change; teachers' beliefs about reading and teaching and their relationship to the teachers' involvement in the staff development program; the culture of each school; the practical argument staff development program, its organization, and presentation; and the relationship between the teachers' willingness to change and the school culture, teachers' beliefs, and the staff development process. This is a set of case studies about teachers in two schools with varied beliefs and backgrounds. Generalizations from this study, applied to other schools and/or staff development programs, may focus on an understanding of the influence of teachers' beliefs and school culture on a staff development program and the process of teacher change.

Abstract:
The issue of education in the Roman Catholic Church of today, particularly amongst the Latino youth, presents an important opportunity. The Church can reach out to the youth of its largest minority group in the Church through the process of acompañamiento and show these youth the value of their education on their future. In addition, the Church can encourage the Latino youth in their faith formation education. Promoting values of education and creating well-rounded, educated Latino youth will foster a stronger Catholic community both in and out of the parish setting.

Aston, Tom, and Alix Wadeson. Process Tracing Innovations in Practice: Finding the Middle Path. Institute of Development Studies, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2023.012.

Full text
Abstract:
Evaluation practitioners in the international development sector have given considerable attention in recent years to process tracing as a method for evaluating impact, including discussion of how to assess the relative importance of causal factors. Despite the increasing interest, there is a relative dearth of examples of practical learning and evidence of applying process tracing in practice. This CDI Practice Paper draws on comparative learning from applying three different types of process tracing in international development initiatives. It argues in favour of a ‘middle path’ of applying evidence tests and rubrics to structure evaluative judgements rather than formal Bayesian updating or looser forms of process tracing. It also calls attention to the potential added value of taking a participatory approach, offering practical recommendations for how to do this effectively.

Abstract:
Living systematic reviews are a relatively new approach to keeping the evidence in systematic reviews current by frequent surveillance and updating. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Evidence-based Practice Center Program recently commissioned a systematic review of plant-based treatments for chronic pain management. This white paper describes the team’s experience in implementing the protocol that was developed a priori, and reflects on the challenges faced and lessons learned in the process of developing and maintaining a living systematic review. Challenges related to scoping, conducting searches, selecting studies, abstracting data, assessing risk of bias, conducting meta-analysis, performing narrative synthesis, assessing strength of evidence, and generating conclusions are described, as well as potential approaches to addressing these challenges.
