This thesis seeks to elaborate the phenomenon of circulation of knowledges about Journalism in the mediatization of society, especially as regards the understanding of linkages between established circuits and communicational flows more tentatives of practice and criticismo journalistic. To this end, experiments of journalistic practices (production of blogs and sites by amateur and appropriation of news in social networks) and the experiences of journalistic criticism (circulation of academic texts and experts in Journalism on the Internet) are observed. From the analysis of these cases, that are observed only in its features that it work to the phenomenon, we seek to apprehend relations (affectations, promises and expectations) between circuits and communicational flows of practice and criticism journalistic in the mediatization of society. The theoretical frameworks that work these observables are mediatization's perspectives specially developed by Braga (2006, 2012a, 2014). As for journalistic practice, this thesis produces inferences about the ability of amateurs to dominate media logics and create their own spaces of production of meanings and narratives about the world, apart from, but also in relation to major media. About journalistic criticism, the inferences produced reveal a scenario in which academics circuits established are closed between the researchers themselves, while comunicational flows of criticism about the production of the major media are exercised, in a dispersed and attempt manner, in the networks social. In both lines of analysis - of the practical and the criticism journalistic - we can saw that knowledges about the Journalism are circulating in the mediatization of society, regardless of the performance of academic or professional circuits.

The following study tried to reveal and comprehend educational practicals in families that live in a lower class neighborhood in Sao Paulo city. Revealing the senses of educational practicals of these families, it has been, firstly, entering their worlds, contextualize their living experiences, and in order to do that, it has been important and revealing get to know their particulars, because the intention of this research has not been only to generalize the senses of the familiar educational practicals. The sense can be comprehended in this work, like the path where these practicals point, it means, the direction of the configured practicals from the narrative obtained from the interviewed families. It s important to remember that, the sense appear according to the situation, which means, within space and time, within a determined context or season, therefore what has emerged from this research refers to investigation that has taken place. This is an existential qualitative phenomenological research. As part of this study we have two families from EMEF s students of the neighborhood. These two families have taken two meetings where reflexive interviews were made, according to Szymanki proposal, besides the testimonies taken in group meetings. The data analysis was inspired on the Existential Phenomenology that was applied to get the educational practicals from their speeches. The results achieved point that the educational practicals of the studied families reveal the sense of being a father and a mother and take the role of being the educators of their own children, leading them to a better life. We haven t noticed a dialogic practical, but a command respect-obedience relationship, although this image of a educator family, committed in their children education, most of the times do not adequate to the concept that some educators have about lower-class families

Full textThe aim of this study was to review the current status of the Performance Management system at Amatola District Council. A study of material and a case study on the implementation of the system at Amatola District Council is described. The performance management model designed by Good People Management has been applied and described in the text. The research results indicate that the majority of staff supports and understand the process. However, feedback and the attitudes of female employees thereof are highlighting red signals. This creates a completely new area of research of which the writer is only highlighting the issue for further research. Linking of performance management with compensation comes up as an issue, understandably so because the Council has agreed not to link the two processes. Recommendations on how to improve the system have been put forward.

The design and use of expert systems for medical diagnosis remains an attractive goal. One such system, the Quick Medical Reference, Decision Theoretic (QMR-DT), is based on a Bayesian network. This very large-scale network models the appearance and manifestation of disease and has approximately 600 unobservable nodes and 4000 observable nodes that represent, respectively, the presence and measurable manifestation of disease in a patient. Exact inference of posterior distributions over the disease nodes is extremely intractable using generic algorithms. Inference can be made much more efficient by exploiting the QMR-DT's unique structure. Indeed, tailor-made inference algorithms for the QMR-DT efficiently generate exact disease posterior marginals for some diagnostic problems and accurate approximate posteriors for others. In this thesis, I identify a risk with using the QMR-DT disease posteriors for medical diagnosis. Specifically, I show that patients and physicians conspire to preferentially report findings that suggest the presence of disease. Because the QMR-DT does not contain an explicit model of this reporting bias, its disease posteriors may not be useful for diagnosis. Correcting these posteriors requires augmenting the QMR-DT with additional variables and dependencies that model the diagnostic procedure. I introduce the diagnostic QMR-DT (dQMR-DT), a Bayesian network containing both the QMR-DT and a simple model of the diagnostic procedure. Using diagnostic problems sampled from the dQMR-DT, I show the danger of doing diagnosis using disease posteriors from the unaugmented QMR-DT.
(cont.) I introduce a new class of approximate inference methods, based on feed-forward neural networks, for both the QMR-DT and the dQMR-DT. I show that these methods, recognition models, generate accurate approximate posteriors on the QMR-DT, on the dQMR-DT, and on a version of the dQMR-DT specified only indirectly through a set of presolved diagnostic problems.

Joint practical deliberation is the activity of deciding together what to do. In this dissertation, I argue that several speech acts that we can use to alter our moral obligations - promises, offers, requests, demands, commands, and agreements - are moves within joint practical deliberation. The dissertation begins by investigating joint practical deliberation. The resulting account implies that joint deliberation is more flexible than we usually recognize, in two ways. First, we can make joint decisions not only about what we will do together, but also about what you or I will do alone. Second, we can deliberate by means of two distinct methods: propose-and-ratify, in which a proposed joint decision must be explicitly accepted to come into effect, and propose-and-challenge, in which a proposed joint decision comes into force unless it is explicitly challenged. Varying these parameters generates a botany of different kinds of proposals we can make within joint deliberation. When we look at these proposals more closely, we make a surprising discovery: for each kind of proposal we can make in joint practical deliberation, there is an everyday speech act with the very same properties. A certain kind of proposal to make a joint decision regarding one's own actions has the same normative effects, under the same conditions, as a promise. One kind of proposal to make a joint decision regarding one's addressee's actions has all the essential features of a command; another kind of deliberative proposal - with the same content but a different method of evaluation - looks exactly like a request. And so on. These similarities are too systematic to be coincidental. The only explanation, I argue, is that these ordinary speech acts are identical to their doppelgangers within joint practical deliberation. Promises and offers are proposals to make joint decisions about what I will do. Commands, demands, and requests are proposals to make joint decisions about whatyou will do. And agreements are joint decisions about what we will do. Call this the deliberative theory of these speech acts. Considering each speech act in turn, I defend the deliberative theory by arguing that it provides a uniquely powerful explanation of its targets' social and moral significance. Once we see how naturally these speech acts fall out of our practice of joint deliberation, theories that treat them as sui genens - as many moral philosophers now do - will come to seem redundant and nonexplanatory. Conversely, thinking of promises, offers, commands, demands, requests, and agreements as moves within joint practical deliberation allows us to give an elegant and generative theory of these phenomena that have confounded moral philosophers for so long.

A high resolution reconfigurable mold has been sought after for over 150 years. An ideal reconfigurable mold would be capable of producing detailed surfaces for use in molding and be capable of fast surface reconfiguration. Such a device would combine the fast speed and repeatability of formative processes, like injection molding, with the flexibility of additive processes, like 3D printing. An affordable, high resolution, reconfigurable mold could be a practical tool for a lean, short-run shop or factory, serving as a resin mold, fixturing surface or concrete formwork; to name only a few possible applications. Resembling the common pin art toy, a discrete element pin bed has often been proposed as a design for a reconfigurable mold. Conventional actuation strategies are often cumbersome and expensive, due to the quadratic increase in number of pin elements with increasing surface resolution. Very few designs exist that are capable of producing a reconfigurable pin array at sufficiently high resolution to compete with the cost of making a fixed geometry mold. A practical pin tool, an inexpensive but high resolution molding tool, could be an asset to shops and small business everywhere, but nothing like this currently exists. This thesis presents a concise design strategy, backed up by analytical arguments and empirical evidence which can used to construct an affordable, high resolution reconfigurable pin tool. We address the challenge of quadratic scaling by edge-addressing simple, nonlinear mechanisms to actuate each pin. Edge addressing, along rows and columns of pins, reduces the number of control inputs to a small, linearly increasing value. Nonlinear mechanisms at each discrete pin site allow for a predictable, localized expression of the edge addressed inputs. Two embodiments of this design strategy are proposed and tested. First, a diode/resistive heater array allows for electrical edge addressing and control of a fusible alloy brake to grip or release targeted, sliding pins. Second, an array of screws is edge addressed by mechanical oscillations to generate nonlinear tangential forces in targeted screws, resulting in controllable screw translations. We conclude by summarizing our results and discuss directions for future work.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation has sought to examine how a post-foundationalist approach to Practical Theology might look. This was done through a critical appraisal of the paradigms of foundationalism and non-foundationalism. These paradigms were explored in their historical context and development to illustrate the defining differences and features of both. The researcher then explored Practical Theology in its historical development to examine whether it has moved beyond foundationalism. This was further done by examining the last three decades of Practical Theology by a comparison of methodologies currently proposed. It emerged that, in many ways, Practical Theology has moved beyond the paradigm of foundationalism. This was seen in its affirmation of the local context, its use of a correlational hermeneutic and the pastoral cycle. These areas were then fleshed out in further detail in an attempt to delineate a truly non-foundationalist Practical Theology. A missional perspective on Practical Theology became an entry point into detailed discussions with regard to context, as well as to how the various sources of the correlational hermeneutic can best be understood in a post-foundationalist world, in light of the post-modern critique. These unique features are indeed central to a post-foundational approach to doing Practical Theology.

The thesis is an exploration of the relations between know-how, abilities, and ordinary knowledge of facts. It is shown that there is a distinctively practical sort of know-how and a corresponding interpretation of 'S knows how to [phi]', and that this special sort of know-how, while possessing representational content, is not simply ordinary knowledge-that. The view rests on a novel distinction between two interpretations of the Intellectualist slogan, familiar from the work of Gilbert Ryle, that know-how is a kind of knowledge-that. The distinction allows us to clarify the issues that are at stake in the debate and see the possibility of a position that combines aspects of both Intellectualism and anti-Intellectualism. An entailment from knowhow to a certain sort of ability is defended, and it is shown that the present view preserves the possibility of appealing to know-how to block Frank Jackson's "knowledge argument" against physicalism.

Full textWith more complex vehicle designs, the frequency and number of measurements contained in telemetry data streams has dramatically increased. One way of improving the use of bandwidth is to change the sample rate, quantity, or type of measurements dynamically. A telemetry front end must be programmable to handle different formats. In a front end that decommutates and routes measurements, a decom list is a control program, which defines the location, size, orientation, and identity of the measurements. To deal with dynamic format changes, a telemetry front end must be able to switch between decom lists. A practical approach to decom list switching must address the needs of error avoidance, packet switching, and the location of switching keys in any portion of the format. Switching between formats should not be restricted to a preprogrammed sequence, but should allow multiple destinations from a particular decom list. A practical and flexible implementation of decom list switching is detailed along with an explanation of how this implementation solves a variety of decommutation problems.
