AbstractOn the basis of a critical survey of university strategies, it is argued that universities reify and objectify “world class” and turn it into absolute and precisely defined goals (location in ranking hierarchies, publication patterns, number of start-ups and licens-es, etc.) and that this in turn is based on a skewed reading of the ascendancy of some universities (notably leading US higher education institutions) to that level. This chapter shows that there were two conceivable ways that banks could have engaged in lending. First, they could have entered the mortgage market as lenders but not relied on a notary to do anything except draw up the loan contracts. At the other extreme, banks might not have competed at all with notaries; rather, their short-term commercial loans might have complemented the notaries' business in arranging mortgages. The chapter examines both possibilities, along with more realistic alternatives between the two extremes, including one in which notaries tried to compete with banks. Notaries, however, were not driven out of business by banks. Many notaries were in fact tempted to take money on deposit and start making short-term loans, at least until the 1880s, when the government enforced prohibitions on the practice.

It attempts to appraise current trends and practice, clarifies emerging issues or challenges that schools face in trying to improve the ways in which ICT is applied to enhance teaching and learning, and identifies promising good practices so that general lessons may be drawn that are of interests to Malaysia and other countries. This chapter looks at three halakhic topics concerning female initiatives and assertions of privacy in the menstrual practices: (1) the regular regiment of menstrual examinations, which is essentially done away with in the Babylonian Talmud; (2) a surprising Talmudic claim that husbands should not second-guess the purity status of their wives; and (3) the well-known and now controversial practice of counting seven days towards purification after the cessation of menstrual flow. The latter practice is attributed by the Talmud to the initiative of Jewish women, initially encouraging a reading of it as a legacy of female enterprise. Notably, the custom of counting seven “clean days” is entirely a Babylonian development, and might be related to similar trends in Zoroastrian and Mandaean practice. Heuristically evoking the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist, this chapter undertakes a counterargument to Chapter 1, asserting that anthropology in fact also preserves theology. In proverbial, genealogical, and analogical ways, anthropologists breach the very dome they construct, refracting some “harmful theospheric rays” while reflecting others. Excavating the theistic roots of anthropology’s concepts and practices, most notably its consummate practice of fieldwork, this chapter reveals the ways in which ethnographic immersion essentially betrays loyalty to Enlightenment dictates on reason by endeavoring to immerse the knower in that desired to be known, as well as enable a very theistic pursuit to “know thyself.”

Chapter 3 investigates the educational and class-based differences in how Chinese American households transmit the liyi dimensions of Chinese Popular Religion and Confucianism. Working-class households tend to pass down the practices of Chinese Popular Religion based on fate, luck, and qi, whereas professional households tend to affirm Confucian thought to match their rational, scientific worldviews. Nearly all respondents’ parents practiced elements of Chinese Popular Religion, most notably venerating ancestors, adhering to fengshui principles of qi, and celebrating Lunar New Year. For working-class families, these practices included belief in supernatural realities and the efficacy of practices to bring about well-being and good fortune. Chinese American professional families saw these rituals as secular customs and maintained them for different reasons: to instill family responsibility through ancestor veneration, maintain good energy via fengshui, and celebrate their heritage through Lunar New Year.
