This work strives to diagnose and comprehend what happens inside the classroom. The data collecting methodology involved: interviews, directly observation and copies of didactic material used by the students in mathematics lessons of primary schools, at Rio de Janeiro, from the year 2002 to 2004. We analyzed 424 lessons of 116 teachers, making possible the description of main observed lessons´ characteristics using content analyses. As a result, I discuss the practices of teachers in action and identify recurring characteristics, analyzing: the materials and resources selected, the activities used, the relations inside the classroom, the complex problems of teachers, and, finally, the conceptions of mathematics´ teaching that appear to support the practices of the group of teachers studied. The analysis also shows the power of the professional knowledge, built over the practice, and the influence of the experience as a student in the future teacher s formation, showing clearly the existence of a teacher´s culture that preserves acquired conceptions and fits recommendations for change into old practices.

Neoconcretism started spectator participation in art and had in Lygia Clark one of its most important and radical promoters. Lygia was, in great part, responsible for the legacy of neoconcretism for Brazilian art history and for the artists that came up after 1960. In this paper, we will try to show the theory behind Lygia s works, her participation in the movement and the beginning of her proposal for the spectator s participation with the series Bichos.

Kuang, Yingqiu. "Instrumental liberalization : China's new practice in bilateral investment treaties in the 2000's." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/50402.

Full text
Abstract:
The spread of Bilateral Investment Treaties in the past decades, as a popular way to promote and protect foreign direct investment between countries, is no doubt a vivid example that displays the triumph of globalization and the diffusion of liberalization. By the end of 2013, most countries of the world have participated and signed 2,857 such treaties (UNCTAD, 2013). China, among them, is definitely a latecomer and a distinct player. Until 1982, which is 23 years later than Germany’s first treaty with Pakistan, China started its BIT program, and soon has become the world’s second largest contract party. As of its particularity, from the very beginning, China became one of the few developing economies (BRICS states in particular) that were able to sign treaties favoring their own economic interests and sovereignty; soon after, China is also the first and the only country among them that chose to abolish such privileges and started its new, liberalized practice. Stemming from China’s unique development trajectory, my research question asks: what has motivated Chinese government to make such unprecedented change? What was the rationale behind this behavior so distinct from other BRIC countries? The emerging causal narrative comes from Steve Vogel’s theory of “asymmetric regulation” in competitive markets, with the analysis of the specific domestic political and economic constraints within China. This paper argues that China’s new, liberalized practice in BITs is first a policy outcome to increase the international competitiveness of the national industry; more than that, it is also an instrumental liberalization effort made by the central government to strengthen the political control over the locals and to re-shape China’s understanding of the international order, especially the South-South cooperation.

Stelmaszyk, Malgorzata. "Turbulent being(s) : proliferating curses and shamanic practice in post-Soviet Kyzyl, Tuva." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33259.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about curses. It shows how the mechanics of cursing are intrinsically linked to shamanic practice in the ethnographic context of social, economic and political shifts in post-Soviet Kyzyl, the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Tuva. Moving beyond discourses that understand 'economics' as narrowly pertaining to wealth, power and the circulation of goods, the thesis explores curses as distinct social mechanisms within an 'occult economy' that constitutes a wider sociocosmic politics emergent from human and non-human interactions. Along these lines, while presenting Tuvan shamanism as central to cursing phenomena, the thesis explores the distinctiveness and efficacy of shamanic practice as a form of artistry embedded in instrument-derived (shamanic drum) and human (the shaman's voice) sound production. Thus, it challenges the 'classical' readings of shamanism which emphasise trance and mediumship usually seen as involving significant changes in the 'physical' and 'psychic' states of the shamans. Contextualizing cursing in the practice of Tuvan shamanism, the thesis illuminates the significance of sound creation among Tuvans in order to introduce the notion of 'turbulence' as integral not only to shamanic sound production, but also to immediate experiences of cursing and the overall patterning of the cosmos. More than that, bringing sounds and turbulence together in the context of shamanic rituals, it shows how sounds are imbued with a potency of their own rather than simply constituting a sonorous aspect of shamanic words. Along these lines, it contributes to a better understanding of im/materiality and the logic of representation. Lastly, exploring the multiplication of curses in the post-Soviet context, the thesis also offers an interpretative framework which unveils how occult phenomena can become efficacious analytical tools, allowing us to grasp the mosaic-like characteristics of the sociocultural contexts in which they are embedded. In this way, the thesis attempts to emancipate 'occultism' from the rigid dichotomies of tradition and modernity, and challenge those anthropological approaches to post-colonial transformations which emphasise cultural revivalism and ethnic identity, remaining caught in the usual dynamics of 'the old' and 'the new' - dynamics we need to leave behind.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study consists of an accurate analysis of the psychiatric interview, by combining three perspectives: analysis of the doctor´s routine or interview agenda, which has a standard format and guides the doctor throughout his clinical practice; frame analysis of the doctor´s clinical practice with a focus on the here and now in doctor-patient interviews; and analysis of the doctor´s representations regarding his practice, revealed during interviews with the researcher. Interactional Sociolinguistics, Ethnographic Research and Social Psychology provide the theoretical framework for this study. Hence, a distinction was made between doctor-centered interviews, denoting the voice of medicine, and patient-centered interviews, denoting the patient´s account of his world of experience. The results showed that there are two kinds of interview agendas: those which tend to control the course of the interview, and others which tend to set a high value on the patient´s stories and experiences, providing more spontaneous interactions. During doctor-patient interviews, the doctor introduces framings, which shift from the investigatory/exploratory to the co- construction of the patient´s world of experience, provoking changes in the asymmetrical relationship. Therefore, the doctor adopts a hybrid discourse behavior, that is, on the one hand he controls the patients´ flow of talk in the encounter, and on the other, he fosters a state of talk where patients may express how they represent their world of experience. As the doctor-researcher interviews were analysed, it became clear that the doctor valued patient-centered interviews, moving away from the procedures in the pre-established agenda. The results suggest, however, that+ the doctor establishes an informationcontrolled meta-frame during the here and now in the interview. He manages the information by controlling the turn structure and summing up the patient´s talk, ignoring, many times, the patients´ contributions. In doing so, the doctor ends up using a legitimated institutional power.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis investigates the preconditions for a new type of migration among the highly skilled between Senegal and the EU, namely circular migration. The three most prominent actors in the shaping of the future migration pattern –the EU (administration), the Senegalese government and the future highly skilled migrants i.e. Senegalese university students –are studied by a combination of social constructivism and critical discourse analysis. The discourses are derived from official EU and Senegalese documents and from a survey as well as from semi-structured interviews with students at the two largest universities in Senegal. The analysis of the discourses shows three factors that point towards a change of the migration practice in favour of circular migration: first, an interdiscursivity between the migration, development and economic growth discourses; second, a resemblance between the three actors discourses on migration; and third, a willingness among all three actors to act for a mobility of knowledge and experience. Consequently, there are preconditions for circular migration between Senegal and the EU.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores what it means to study a bureaucracy at work. It outlines my methodological approach for analysing everyday practices in the SEM, the challenges I encountered during fieldwork as well as the methodological limits of this study. Building on Reckwitz’s (European Journal of Social Theory 5: 243–263, 2002) definition of practice, I argue that methodological triangulation and particularly participant observation—mostly in the form of following administrative caseworkers around in their daily work—are crucial for analysing both the discursive and non-discursive aspects of practices. Yet, at the same time, following Hitchings (Area 44: 61–67, 2012), I challenge the claim made by some authors that discursive methods are methodologically unfitting for researching practices from a practice theoretical perspective. Rather, I argue that people’s retrospective descriptions of past events, their explicit knowledge of rules and norms and particularly their capacity to reflect on why they do what they do provide us with valuable insights into everyday practice.

Abstract:
In 2015, students at the University of Cape Town called for the statue of Cecil Rhodes, the 19th century British coloniser, to be removed from their campus. Their clarion call, in this increasingly widespread #RhodesMustFall movement, was that for diversity, inclusion and social justice to become a lived reality in higher education (HE), the curriculum has to be ‘decolonised’. (Chantiluke, et al, 2018; Le Grange, 2016) This was to be done by challenging the longstanding, hegemonic Eurocentric production of knowledge and dominant values by accommodating alternative perspectives, epistemologies and content. Moreover, they also called for broader institutional changes: fees must fall, and the recruitment and retention of both students and staff should take better account of cultural diversity rather than working to socially reproduce ‘white privilege’ (Bhambra, et al, 2015) Concerns had long been voiced by both academics and students about curricula dominated by white, capitalist, heterosexual, western worldviews at the expense of the experiences and discourses of those not perceiving themselves as fitting into those mainstream categories (for an Afrocentric perspective, see inter alia, Asante, 1995; Hicks & Holden, 2007) The massification of HE across race and class lines in the past four decades has fuelled these debates; consequentially, the ‘fitness’ of curricula across disciplines are increasingly being questioned. Student representative bodies have also voiced the deeper concern that many pedagogic practices and assessment techniques in university systems serve to reproduce society’s broader inequalities. Certainly, in the UK, recent in-depth research has indicated that the outcomes of inequity are both multifaceted and tangible, with, for example, graduating students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds only receiving half as many ‘good’ (first class and upper second) degree classifications as their white counterparts (RHS, 2018). As a consequence of such findings and reports, the momentum for discussing the issues around diversifying and decolonising the university has gathered pace. Importantly, however, as the case and arguments have been expressed not only through peer reviewed articles and reports published by learned societies, but also in the popular press, the core issues have become more accessible than most academic debates and more readily discussed by both teachers and learners (Arday and Mirza, 2018; RHS, 2018). Hence, more recently, findings about the attainment/awarding gap have been taken seriously and given prominence by both Universities UK and the National Union of Students, though their shared conclusion is that radical (though yet to be determined) steps are needed if any movements or campaigns, such as #closingthegap are to find any success. Wang, Yong-Yi. PR350-164500-R03 Semi-Automatic FCAW-S Welding Process and Implications to Pipeline Girth Weld Integrity. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0012238.

Full text
Abstract:
This report provides a comprehensive update of key considerations and drivers that will influence FCAW-S weld performance. The major focus has been toughness, specifically in understanding the causes of seemingly large variation in measured toughness. Analysis of the data indicates that improving welding practice is an effective tool for reducing the toughness variation and enhancing overall weld performance. Comparisons are made with the performance of other welding processes commonly used for pipeline girth welding, such as SMAW.

Zheng. L52044 Effects of Operating Practice on Crack Dormancy and Growth. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), May 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011334.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes the output of two phases of the research contract on Effects of Operating Practice on SCC Crack Growth, GRI-05/8668, submitted to PRCI in August 2002 (Phase I) and in July 2003 (Phase II). The objective of the first phase of the work was to identify, through literature survey, a correlation model that relates the crack growth rate in low-pH or in high-pH environments to the deformation rate of the line pipe steel. The objective of the second phase of the project was to experimentally validate the correlation model(s) identified in Phase I. The ultimate goal of this work is to define the critical loading condit ions necessary for SCC so that operating practices can be assessed for the purpose of eventual avoidance of SCC. It is also hoped that such a deformation-rate-based model can provide insight for understanding the transition between active and inactive (or dormant) states of the cracking that is often observed in laboratory SCC tests. Understanding the causes for dormancy of stress corrosion cracks and the mechanism(s) of crack reactivation has significant practical implications. Service life is extended if conditions of dormancy can be maintained and conditions of growth or reactivation can be avoided.

Maddela, Claypool, and Fang. PR-446-133604-R01 Alternative Method for Potential Measurement on Buried or Submerged Pipeline. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), May 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010843.

Full text
Abstract:
Missouri S and T investigated alternative new methods to the existing practice of measuring the structure-to-electrolyte potential to assess the level of cathodic protection (CP) of a buried pipeline. The measurement of a negative 850 mV DC pipeline to soil potential relative to a copper/copper sulfate reference electrode has been used for decades as a threshold value for sufficient CP to reduce external corrosion to an acceptable rate ( less than 0.001 per year). However, there is a need for an alternative method that more accurately depicts the corrosion rates of buried pipeline.
