Full textThis study analyses individual requirements and preferences of pigs by measuring objective parameters of their behaviour. In contrary to previous approaches the generated experimental setup enabling long term investigation of 22 pigs behaviour during the whole fattening period. Using sensorbased identification of every single pig it was possible to record habitation, duration of stay and the frequency of attendance in distinct area of the facility namely feeding and drinking area, resting area as well as two areas with environmental enrichment. Furthermore two automatic feeders and the drinkers were equipped with the animal identification system. More than 6000 data sets for each animal were recorded in two independent experimental series. The evaluation focused on the analysis of both preference and utilisation of environmental enrichments such as sand, novel nuzzle mat and straw. It seemed that nuzzling turned out to be essential for the animals, as six to eleven visits per day and animal were recorded. Pigs attended to the respective elements up to 3.4 hours per day. Significant preferences for specific elements could be observed. For individual study animals both frequency and duration of stay were markedly variable. Attractiveness of novel environmental enrichments increased with increasing age of the pigs. By modelling frequency of use and duration of stay, both recorded sensor-based, it was possible to accomplish an objective analysis of the individual preference for specific offers which is represented by an index number. This number supported the results obtained by complex measurements precisely yet in a simplified manner. Taking into account the adaptation process to changing environmental conditions the generated model permits a conclusion regarding affinity and compensation of the offerings.

Full textSensory asymmetries are most prominent with respect to the eyes and ears. There are various ways to investigate these asymmetries. The tests used for this purpose can be classified as preference, performance and sensory tests. Contrary to eyedness, earedness has received little attention. The objective of this study is to provide a few new investigatory aspects. We were able to identify 13 different tests for the determination of earedness in the literature: ‘drawer’, ‘tablecloth’, ‘box’, ‘stop watch’, ‘telephone receiver’, ‘wall phone’, ‘earphone’, ‘door’, ‘heartbeat’, ‘transistor radio’, ‘voice’, ‘wall’ and ‘head movement’. A study including 300 student test subjects was done to determine the usefulness of this battery of 13 tests. A high correlation was found between ‘stop watch’, ‘heartbeat’, ‘door’ and ‘box’, but not between telephoning and earedness. The determination of earedness by a battery comprised of 4 tests (‘stop watch’, ‘heartbeat’, ‘door’ and ‘box’) is suggested
Full textThe goal of this thesis is the conceptual study of risk and its quantification via robust representations. We concentrate in a first part on context invariant features related to this notion: diversification and monotonicity. We introduce and study the general properties of three key concepts, risk order, risk measure and risk acceptance family and their one-to-one relations. Our main result is a uniquely characterized dual robust representation of lower semicontinuous risk orders on topological vector space. We also provide automatic continuity and robust representation results on specific convex sets. This approach allows multiple interpretation of risk depending on the setting: model risk in the case of random variables, distributional risk in the case of lotteries, discounting risk in the case of consumption streams... Various explicit computations in those different settings are then treated (economic index of riskiness, certainty equivalent, VaR on lotteries, variational preferences...). In the second part, we consider preferences which might require additional information in order to be expressed. We provide a mathematical framework for this idea in terms of preorders, called conditional preference orders, which are locally compatible with the available information. This allows us to construct conditional numerical representations of conditional preferences. We obtain a conditional version of the von Neumann and Morgenstern representation for measurable stochastic kernels and extend then to a conditional version of the variational preferences. We finally clarify the interplay between model risk and distributional risk on the axiomatic level.

Full textCar designers are experts in creating car exteriors that transport a brand’s identity by giving a form to its values which has to appeal to a multitude of customers (Giannini & Monti, 2003; Karjalainen, 2002). In this process of translating values into forms it is quintessential to apprehend the customers’ requirements, as the designers understanding of these needs and thus of the design problem itself has a major impact on the quality of the design (Ulrich, 2011). One basis for this apprehension is shared contextual knowledge stemming from a successful interaction between the designer and the user (Lee, Popovich, Blackler & Lee, 2009). Unfortunately, there often is no direct exchange between designers and users (Zeisel, 2006). What is more, findings from research on the fine arts and product aesthetics prove that acquiring design knowledge and aesthetic expertise distinctly alters one’s cognitive processing of aesthetic objects, which also manifests in one’s perception, assessment, and behaviour. One should also expect experts’ preferential assessments to differ from the ones of users as far as aesthetic assessment is concerned. Considering these propositions, the goal of this doctoral thesis was to systematically examine these expertise-induced differences between design experts and laymen in perceiving and assessing automotive design. This thesis also contibutes to furthering the interaction between designers and users by establishing a shared knowledge basis and does so by analyzing the perception, processing, and assessment of car design by designers and laymen. Theoretical assumptions are based on the model of aesthetic appreciation by Leder, Belke, Oeberst and Augustin (2004), which provides detailed but hitherto untested assumptions on how experts and laymen differ in their processing of aesthetic objects. The thesis first focussed on examining the expertiseinduced differences in describing and assessing car design available „in the wild“, i.e. on the market. This and the lexical link between customers’ descriptive attributes and brand values as intended by the car companies were tested in two studies: Study I collected descriptive attributes by using Kelly’s (1955) method of triadic comparions. It also tested the assumption that experts verbalise more productively, generate a higher ratio of symbol-related to form-related attributes and are more homogenous in their use of attributes. In this study, 20 experts and 20 laymen were presented four cars and were to describe the differences between them using self-chosen adjectives. Contrary to the initial assumption, both groups used similar attributes and did thus also not differ in the ratio of symbol-related and form-related attributes. The attributes generated in this study were matched to the collected and categorised values of ten brands using a prototype approach (cp. Amelang & Zielinski, 2002), which resulted in six scales for covering the aesthetic impression of cars. Study II tested these scales for consistency on 83 designers and students of design and 98 design laymen in an online questionnaire. In addition, first predictions were derived from the model by Leder et al. (2004) and tested by comparing these two groups regarding their assessment of four cars on the scales that had shown a high level of internal consistency (attractiveness, dynamics, progressiveness and quality) as well as regarding their overall aesthetic appreciation, response time, and affinity for cars. In this study, the experts were more radical in their assessments, took more time working in the tasks, and cherished cars more than the laymen. The second focus of this work was to combine the assumptions of the model by Leder et al. (2004) and the postulations on how the characteristics of aesthetic objects influence aesthetic assessments (Berlyne, 1971; Martindale, 1988; Silvia, 2005b): Inhowfar do market-relevant characteristics such as innovativeness affect expertise-induced assessment of design? Study III and IV used line art models that were systematically graduated for innovativeness and balance to answer this question. In study III, 18 design students and 20 engineering students assessed these models in an online questionnaire regarding attractiveness, innovativeness, and balance. The results were in line with the assumptions and showed that laymen rated highly innovative design less attractive than experts. Study IV collected data on the aesthetic assessment, gaze behavior, and the participants’ affective state in a repeated measures design that included an intermediary phase of elaborately assessing design by using the questionnaire developed in study II. The sample consisted of 11 designers, 11 engineers, and 11 humanities scholars. Although highly innovative design – as in study III – was rated less attractive by the laymen, repeated measurement decreased this group difference. The study assumed but could not show effects of expertise-induced gaze behaviour, and an expertise-induced better coping with the task resulting in a greater satisfaction with one’s task performance. The findings of this thesis demonstrate that experience with design and – even more pronounced – expertise in this field result in a greater appreciation for innovative design and a more nuanced assessment of innovativeness. Probably, designers constantly enhance their mental schema due to being confronted with various variations of and solutions for a design problem. The studies suggest that experts process car design in a more style-related, elaborate manner and also that designers, due to their more advanced aesthetic level of development (Parsons, 1987) and expertise, are more autonomous in their assessment. These stable expertise-induced differences in assessment between laymen and experts could be demonstrated for various samples. Thus, they are a valid basis for dealing more sensitively with customers’ requirements in the design process. The questionnaire developed in this thesis can be applied to measure design preferences in detail, to compare the aesthetic impact to the intended brand statement, and to discuss users’ impressions. To conclude, the results presented in this thesis contribute to the theory of aesthetic assessment in providing a more precise understanding of aesthetic assessments and can also be applied to design education and design processes.
Lauritzen, Christine Elisabeth Thomsen. "Experimental Studies on Social Behavior of Entrepreneurs." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/22880.
Full textHow do entrepreneurs’ social inclinations compare to those of non-entrepreneurs? Does the social preference structure of entrepreneurs provide us with information regarding the business type they choose to operate (i.e., whether they choose to run a social business versus a commercial business)? Do social preferences relate to (un)productive entrepreneurial motives? Does personality play a role in this context? This dissertation addresses these research questions by conducting four experimental studies with actual entrepreneurs, business and economics students, farmers, and start-up employees, collaborators and investors. Thereby, different methods are applied in laboratory, online, and lab-in-the-field experiments. The findings suggest entrepreneurs to hold generally stronger social tendencies, in particular in relation to cooperation. No link between social preferences and the choice of founding a social or commercial business is found.

Full textIn this thesis, I investigate how access to resources can affect the formation of informal support arrangements between households. This question is of particular relevance in the light of the rapid economic development that many former low-income countries recently experienced, which goes hand in hand with increasing possibilities for the population to cope with hardships individually. An understanding of the relationship between informal support and access to alternative risk management resources is crucial in order to make predictions about how this development can affect the social structure, and to specify welfare effects. In the thesis, I investigate this relationship from three different angles. First, I study the structure of mutual support arrangements in a fishing village on the Philippines (Chapter 2). Based on a model of strategic link formation I investigate which factors explain that two households engage in a mutual support arrangement with a focus on the role of households' alternative resources. In a second study, I investigate how the willingness to provide support can be affected by the availability of alternative resources, in particular individual insurance (Chapter 3). This is analyzed based on a lab-in-the-field experiment conducted in Cambodia. Different to the first study, the second study focuses on social preference motivated support. The last study conceptually links the first two studies. I relate the subjects' support decisions observed in the experiment back to the subjects' engagement in mutual support arrangements in real life and thus put the behavior in context to the social structure (Chapter 4). In summary, the studies show that with access to individual risk management options, the incentives to engage in mutual support arrangements as well as social preference motivated support can reduce, which has a direct impact on the local social structure.

Full textThis thesis investigates the context-dependence of preferences in consequence of market exits in 4 essays. Essay 1 discusses the effect of brand delisting on customer responses. On the basis of two empirical studies, the existence of a negative similarity, a negative attraction and a negative compromise effect is revealed and key determinants of a brand loyal reaction are analyzed. Essay 2 supports the hypotheses on negative context effects for brand removals across different experimental settings and product categories. The resultant switching patterns collectively lead to bigger damages for manufacturers than for retailers. Essay 3 investigates preference shifts in out-of-stock situations by including promotion as essential driver. A series of online experiments demonstrate that for temporal unavailability of products, substitution behavior correspond to a negative similarity effect which is, however, reduced for stock-outs of low involvement fast moving consumer goods on promotion. While the negative similarity effect is enforced for promotions of similar substitutes, it is ruled out by the simultaneous occurrence of an attraction effect when dissimilar substitutes are offered at a reduced price. Essay 4 studies important antecedent variables of the negative attraction effect. In reference to the causal model on product introduction developed by Mishra et al. (1993), an adapted holistic framework for product exit is tested by using structural equation modeling. The results emphasize decoy share, preference strength and information relevance as major drivers of the considered phenomenon.

Full textThe doctoral dissertation analyzes context-dependent preference formation of customers with regard to the influence of product- and situation-specific as well as experimental factors. Essay 1 studies preference formation of customers in out-of-stock situations by coevally considering the specific influence of promotions. The results of two online studies reveal that both phantoms and promotions induce changes in the dominance structure of a choice set, thereby systematically affecting customers’ substitution decisions. Essay 2 discusses if context effects are significantly overestimated in binding choice settings that include real payments for test products. The attained results confirm that the similarity effect is significantly higher in purely hypothetical decision environments in contrast to realistic choice setting inclusive of payment obligations for the selected products. Essay 3 attends to the question if the reversed similarity effect – as a customers’ tendency to preferably select very similar substitutes when a desired item is temporarily unavailable – also holds true in market-like choice scenarios. The results of a comprehensive online study confirm the existence of the effect in all tested product categories. Essay 4 studies the interactive effect of phantoms, i.e. unavailable choice options, and recommendations on directing customers’ choice in online purchase decisions. It can be demonstrated that the factors’ separate influence does not necessarily add up when appearing within the same choice scenario. Instead boundary conditions of the factors’ interaction are identified. Essay 5 seeks to identify determinants of customers’ preference for organic products. The results of PLS structural equation modelling show that health- as well as environmental motives do not have a direct effect on relative preferences for organic items but that their influence is fully mediated by one’s attitude towards organically produced articles.

Full textThis dissertation investigates various channels through which information processing affects investment decisions. Controlled laboratory experiments allow for studying how subjects’ decisions vary with the type of information and the decision-context. The experiment in the first chapter discloses the difficulty with contingent reasoning, i.e. learning from hypothetical events. A different experiment in Chapter Two analyzes how information processing changes investors’ reactions to ambiguity—an environment with multiple rational learning rules. Using the same experiment, the last chapter questions the independence between belief updating and risk preferences.

Full textScarcity of resources and sustainable use of resources are central issues of our time. In traffic psychology, the theme of sustainable mobility has also taken on increased importance in recent years. Herein electric mobility has been ascribed a decisive role in the sustainable utilization of our energy resources. Less dependence on energy imports, zero-emissions (at least locally), and the potential for better integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid are central advantages of electric mobility. Yet, a potential challenge for users is the interaction with limited range resources. The present dissertation focuses on user experience and behavior in dealing with electric vehicle range. Prior to the research project, “MINI E Berlin powered by Vattenfall”, which constitutes the basis for this dissertation, there were rarely any published studies concerning the user perspective on range. Consequently, the goal of this dissertation is to obtain a detailed and theory-driven psychological understanding of the central facets of this topic. Based on transferrable theories and concepts from related areas of applied psychology, a model is developed and tested within this dissertation: the adaptive control of range resources (ACOR) model. A key point of this model is the concept of comfortable range, which represents a psychological foundation of the widely discussed concept of range anxiety. This is because, in everyday life, users with practical electric vehicle experience rarely experience situations in which range anxiety occurs, given a relatively typical mileage for mobility in Germany. Rather, range interaction is characterized by the avoidance, not the experience, of range anxiety (i.e., range stress). Via the analogy to psychological stress, different variables that influence comfortable range are identified. The comfortable range (i.e., an individual’s preferred range safety buffer) appears to be a variable that shows a high interindividual variance, which partly seems to be predicated upon differing stress resistance. In sum, the suboptimal range utilization found in previous studies is explained by the proposition that there are three psychological range levels besides the technical range that characterize the transition from the objective physical to the subjective psychological range situation: (1) The competent (i.e., maximum achievable for the user), (2) the performant (i.e., available on an everyday basis) and (3) the comfortable (i.e., actual usable) range. It shows that 20-25% of the range resources that are available on an everyday basis are lost as a psychological safety buffer. With the acquired understanding of user-range interaction, it should become possible to develop better informed strategies for attaining higher actual battery usage relative to battery capacity, as well as supporting users in the sustainable use of range resources. Another focus of the dissertation is interaction styles in dealing with range resources. Analogous to the psychological concepts of driving styles and coping styles and based on earlier studies of mobile phone use charging styles, the concept of UBIS (user-battery interaction style) is proposed, as a tendency to deal with the battery resources rather more or less actively (e.g., in charging decisions). Indeed, it shows that this variable, together with comfortable range, can explain certain parameters of charging behavior, and also shows temporal stability as well as stability across different human-machine-systems. Moreover, a relationship between UBIS and a sustainable interaction with energy resources in an electric mobility system is found. Finally, the dissertation also covers the preferences for certain range configurations. Here, the pattern of previous research findings indicate that range preferences of car buyers are often far greater than their actual range needs. In the present work, this discrepancy is quantified for the first time based on data from potential electric car customers with practical electric vehicle experience. It shows that, (1) such users do not necessarily have exaggerated range preferences, (2) experienced range anxiety during usage and a higher familiar range of combustion cars are associated with higher range preferences, (3) range preferences decrease with increasing experience, and (4) the correlation between actual range needs and range preferences grows as practical experience increases. This highlights the importance of practical experience for the broad success of sustainable electric mobility systems. Potentially, some theoretical and methodological developments from this work are also transferrable to similar human-machine-systems as well as related issues in the field of sustainable mobility. Implications for application are, for example, that a reliable usable range is more important than an increase in maximum possible range. Moreover, the design of information and assistance systems for facilitation of the user-range interaction must be targeted at encouraging more intensive interaction with range dynamics, promoting skill acquisition as well as supporting users in their daily regulation of range resources, for example by enhancing subjective controllability of range

Full textThe overall objective of this study is to analyze the impact of saltwater intrusion on rice cultivation at different salinity levels and it also explores how changes in the rice cultivar options within the north central coastal region of Vietnam can help to reduce these impacts. In soils with high salinity levels which are no longer suitable for rice cultivation, more suitable adaptation strategies are called upon through examining farmers’ preference for different crop sequences and the factors affecting their preferences in the interaction with various levels of salinity. The study investigated impacts of salinity on mean and variability of rice yields in four communes of Thua Thien Hue Province and looked at possible changes in the portfolio of rice cultivars, which would offer farmers the potential to increase yields and decrease yield variability simultaneously. I also evaluated the impact of saltwater intrusion on the productivity and technical efficiency of rice farms in the study area. Contrasting to existing studies, this research analyzed season-differentiated impact of soil salinity. Salt tolerant rice varieties can secure yields as long as salinity levels are moderate but are inappropriate once salinity becomes severe. This led to the conduct of third methodological approach that generated information about rice farmers’ preferences and motivations for choosing among the portfolio of locally feasible adaptive and transformative options using a choice experiment. The respondents’ adoption outcomes at different salinity levels were also simulated. The results showed that salinity has negative impact on rice yields, contributes to an increase in variability of yields and reduces rice technical efficiency depending on rice varieties.
