Towards the long-lingering question of the truth value of certain propositions in the modern philosophy of language, Rudolf Carnap has shed light on it from a Pragmatic point of view. The perspective of Pragmatics proposed by Jef Verschueren coincides with Carnap’s theory. It’s true that all aspects of language use reflect the pragmatic considerations of language users, especially when it comes to the use of multi-modality verbs. Revealing the pragmatical essence and principles of the use of multi-modality verbs will contribute to fullfilling the requirements of usefulness, fruitfulness, and s

In this paper I argue against a sharp separation of semantics from pragmatics. While it may be useful to consider semantics independently of pragmatics, in some cases this strategy may lead us astray. First, I make a methodological point. Competing semantic analyses are often presented as supported by competing semantic intuitions of native speakers. Functional considerations are pragmatic considerations which should affect our choice of semantics. These are inferences from the linguistic goals the speakers actually achieve to the meanings their expressions must therefore have. Second, there a

The question of accuracy of interpretation of foreign language court testimonies is one of utmost importance to the court, to the witness and to the interpreter. The adversarial system uses language as its main weapon in the metaphorical battle, and cases are based on the oral evidence of their witnesses. When witnesses do not speak English, the sole responsibility of making that witness understood to the court rests with the interpreter. In the adversarial system, content of testimony is not the only important issue; delivery, style, register are just as important. This is why the idea of ‘li

In contemporary discussions about normative reasons for belief, it is often argued or assumed that all reasons for belief arise only from epistemological considerations. This chapter explores the prospects, on pragmatic encroachment, for knowledge of theism (even if true), and of atheism (even if true), given two types of practical costs: namely, by holding a false belief, or by missing out on a true belief. This view is pragmatic since it allows appeal to the practical implications of considering a condition to be a disease in justifying the classification, for particular purposes. The focus of this contribution is to report sorption data for Asse salt mine. The purpose of the experimental program was to obtain data based on site and scenario specific considerations for use in terms of Kd-values for the emplacement rooms in performance assessment calculations. A range of materials, solutions and radionuclides was studied, including the variation of solid to liquid ratio and the effect of complexing agents with EDTA chosen as the representative. Observed sorption kinetics is compared to observations in model systems, where a fast and a subsequent slow sorption step occur.

Abstract:
Over the past 50 years the capability of technology to improve surgical care has been realised and while surgical trainees and trainers strive to deliver care and train; the technological ‘solutions’ market continues to expand. However, there remains no coordinated process to assess these technologies. The FOS:TEST Report aimed to (1) define the current, unmet needs in surgical training, (2) assess the current evidence-base of technologies that may be beneficial to training and map these onto both the patient and trainee pathway and (3) make recommendations on the development, assessment, and

Bocalandro, Laura, and Rafael Villa. A Blueprint for a Regional Public Goods Monitoring and Evaluation System. Inter-American Development Bank, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009039.

Abstract:
This technical note presents a blueprint for a Monitoring and Evaluation System for the Regional Public Goods Program. The blueprint took into consideration the improvements and continued deficiencies of the monitoring and evaluation function currently applied to the RPG Program and projects, and the state of the art in monitoring and evaluation of integration programs, particularly those focused on the software aspects of integration. The scope of the proposed system includes both monitoring and evaluation of impact and performance, and auditing results and processes (or technologies). Its de

Burns, Malcom, and Gavin Nixon. Literature review on analytical methods for the detection of precision bred products. Food Standards Agency, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.ney927.

Full text
Abstract:
The Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act (England) aims to develop a science-based process for the regulation and authorisation of precision bred organisms (PBOs). PBOs are created by genetic technologies but exhibit changes which could have occurred through traditional processes. This current review, commissioned by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), aims to clarify existing terminologies, explore viable methods for the detection, identification, and quantification of products of precision breeding techniques, address and identify potential solutions to the analytical challenges presente
