Abstract:
The paper examines the metaphorical expressions derived from anim ‘face’ in Akan, a major language in Ghana. It analyses and discusses face metaphoric expressions in relation with the universal concept analysed by Face Theory. The paper projects this concept onto the Akan cultural system and looks at how the concept is used in Akan communicative interaction. The sociolinguistics and pragmatics of anim are considered. In particular, it focuses on face-to-face interaction and the typical situations and discourses within the Akan speech community where the concept of face plays a role.

Abstract:
A crucial part of language competency is understanding social interactions to extract pertinent semantic cues in any expression's implied meaning besides grammatical and strategic competencies (Taguchi, 2011). Teaching of pragmatics is around 40 year older concept (Chen, 2011) while it is teachable (Bardovi,1999). The purpose of any language is communication (Locke, 1975) and avoiding face-threatening responses. Penelope (1987) elaborates on ways that are used to develop positive social interaction. Politeness theory is based on the concept of "face," which refers to a person's sense of self-esteem. Penelope’s (1987) “Politeness Theory” has been used in this study as a guiding theoretical framework. A mixed method approach has been adopted for getting real insight into the matter as the development of pragmatics. The study aims to find out the better way of teaching pragmatics and the impact of implicit and explicit teaching on the pragmatic production and awareness of communicative competence (Glaser, 2009).

Vocatives have never played a central role in linguistic research in either the field of grammar or in pragmatics. The aim of the present article is to focus on the pragmatic functions of Spanish vocatives in the context of speech acts. During my investigations for my PhD project on deictic expressions it became clear that vocatives are used for many purposes in Spanish dialogue. I also noticed that the use of vocatives was in many cases related to the concept of „face“. In the following I discuss eight different pragmatic functions of vocatives, including their role as down and upgraders in face-threatning and face-supporting acts.

<strong>Abstract:</strong> Politeness in speech acts plays a crucial role in maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships within society. People from different sociocultural backgrounds often have divergent understandings of what constitutes politeness, reflecting varied cultural pragmatic presuppositions. <em>Intercultural Communication Skills</em> by Don Snow, published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, is a widely used textbook for public English courses on <em>Intercultural Communication</em> in Chinese universities. The textbook features authentic language and a moderate level of lexical difficulty. Each unit comprises "typical cases of cross-cultural pragmatic failures between Chinese and American interactions + analysis + conceptual interpretations". The textbook&rsquo;s primary focus is on how to interact with Westerners, emphasizing American individualistic values of politeness while inadequately addressing or occasionally misinterpreting Confucian relational ethics inherent in Chinese politeness. Drawing upon sociological research on the Chinese concept of "face", this paper supplements the textbook&rsquo;s analysis with additional insights from a cross-cultural pragmatics perspective to enhance classroom teaching. The fundamental difference between Chinese and Western politeness lies in their interpretations of "personhood": the "role-bearing individual" in Chinese culture versus the "rights-bearing individual" in Western contexts. <strong>Keywords:</strong> Cross-Cultural Pragmatic Failure, Politeness, Confucian Relational Ethics, Concept of Face. <strong>Title:</strong> A Cross-Cultural Pragmatics Perspective on Teaching <em>Intercultural Communication</em> <strong>Author:</strong> Guan Jingying <strong>International Journal of Novel Research in Humanity and Social Sciences</strong> <strong>ISSN 2394-9694</strong> <strong>Vol. 11, Issue 6, November</strong><strong> 2024 - December 2024</strong> <strong>Page No: 29-36</strong> <strong>Novelty Journals</strong> <strong>Website: www.noveltyjournals.com</strong> <strong>Published Date: 21-November-2024</strong> <strong>DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14199083</strong> <strong>Paper Download Link (Source)</strong> <strong>https://www.noveltyjournals.com/upload/paper/A%20Cross-Cultural%20Pragmatics%20Perspective-21112024-2.pdf</strong>

Abstract:
Abstract Ever since Goffman examined “face” in social interaction in 1955, researchers in intercultural and sociocultural pragmatics have employed the concept in many ways, and have developed a number of different positions on what the concept entails and on how to study it. Following Goffman, face is uniformly conceptualized as a phenomenon apparent in everyday interacting, but in focusing on the characteristics of face, researchers have routinely overlooked their conceptualizations of everyday interaction. This article examines twelve current conceptualizations of face, focusing particularly on their conceptualizations of everyday interacting and their implications for examining face, and providing researchers with bases for choosing a conceptualization that will be productive in addressing their research questions regarding face in everyday interacting.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the concepts of face and (im)politeness from both first-order and second-order perspectives, and attempts at rethinking face, (im)politeness, and Face-Threatening Acts (FTAs). It suggests that each and every speech act is issued as a result of the interplay between self&rsquo;s intention and his motivation, with intention being the ignition, and motivation the fuel. Listing a number of features of speech acts, the paper further argues that FTAs must be redefined, and suggests the existence of Face-Attacking Acts (FAAs) as well as Face-Guarding Acts (FGAs)&mdash;but uses FAAs as a cover term for both. The paper also suggests a model for the description of FAAs/FGAs, and argues that they fall into four classes: (1) self-destructive hypothetical FAAs, (2) self-/other-guarding hypothetical FGAs, (3) other-destructive objective FAAs, and (4) self-/other-guarding objective FGAs. It then goes on to rethink the concept of (im)politeness, and suggests a model for politeness theory which entails a redefinition of politeness and impoliteness. It provides colorful examples and tangible evidence to relate (im)politeness to both context and collective pragmatic competence, and claims that action can be dominant or recess to speech just like dominant versus recess genes in biology.

Abstract:
Abstract Taking an interpersonal pragmatics approach, this paper aims to view literary text as social discourse where conversational exchanges convey more than the content of talk. Applying the method of interpersonal pragmatic analysis, centred around the notions of implicatures and the concept of face in pragmatics, the social status of speakers is revealed via expressing their personal desires, preferences and professional ambitions. Combining the models of pragmatic stylistics analysis and the conception of interpersonal rhetoric (Leech, 1983) enables effective exploration of the interplay between characters, their efforts to comply with the cooperative and politeness principles, following particular communicative goals in conversations, making inferences and understanding implicatures. Focusing on the above-stated aims of research, the historical thriller The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld (2006) was chosen as the subject of analysis. In this novel, psychoanalysis and interpretation of a patient’s/victim’s responses, the unique application of professional expertise in psychoanalysis, palpable rivalry between scholars, as well as a desire for international recognition provide rich material for analysis. The presented research contributes new insights into the scholarly debate on interpersonal pragmatics, showing that approaching literary discourse analysis via a pragmatic stylistics approach is relevant and beneficial.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe concept of plagiarism, as used both in considerations of academic writing and in international negotiations over intellectual copyright, assumes a model of communication based on autonomous, rational, individuals who behave as originators of their own discourses. But studies of communication, beginning with Goffman's concepts of production format and footing – and also including the concepts of enactment, social role, face, politeness pragmatics, metaphors of self and communication, and innatist/social concepts of knowledge – indicate that such a unified, autonomous, and original communicative identity presupposes an oversimplified model of communication, centrally based in the ideology of the rational, autonomous individual which has been dominant in Europe since the Enlightenment. The concept of plagiarism masks the assertion of this ideological position. (Plagiarism, ideology, identity, intercultural discourse)

Abstract:
Face-to-face interaction has been studied both within sociology and linguistics, as well as withinother disciplines. Often has the perspective been too narrow, something which is not compatiblewith the diverse and dynamic nature of this type of interaction. This narrow view prevents fullunderstanding of interaction. Within this theoretical paper it is suggested that face-to-faceinteraction has to be studied with a broad perspective; when studying face-to-face interaction itis necessary to acknowledge its dynamic nature and therefore it is necessary to combineknowledge from different disciplines. Within this paper, I combine theories from linguistics andsociology in order to gain a broader perspective upon interaction. What has been missing fromearlier research upon face-to-face interaction and upon the competence needed to participatein such interaction is not the knowledge of the different features of interaction but a will toconnect them all. Existing concepts for describing the competence needed in order to be ableto interact have often failed to describe the dynamic, multi-faceted nature of interaction; therehas been a tendency to try to explain everything with just one factor. Within this paper, amore covering concept of the competence needed of an interactant within face-to-faceinteraction is proposed and sketched; a concept which I name Interaction Competence. Thiscompetence is the knowledge and abilities needed of an interactant in order to be able tointeract with others. This concept, which can be a valuable analytical tool for analyzing faceto-face interaction, has Dell Hymes’ concept of Communicative Competence and ErvingGoffman’s and Ann Warfield Rawls’ concept of Interaction Order as building-blocks andconsists of four main areas of competence: Control Body, Command Language, HandleSocio-cultural Knowledge and Understand Interaction Order. Within this paper also the affectof two interactant-external factors: the context and acceptability. Both are found to be highlyrelevant for the Interaction Competence of an interactant, thus the need for acknowledging therole of sufficient and acceptable Interaction Competence is seen.<br><p>Presenterades (utöver uppsatsseminariet) inom ramen för Sociologiska Institutionens IMER (Internationella Migration Etniska Relationer)-seminarium</p>

The areas evolved to airframe-propulsion-avionics (A-P-A), armament/munitions, command-control-communications-computers-intelligence (C4I), electronic warfare (EW), and space. Use of the SFTC concept is required in formal USAF directives and details of the specific coverage for each mission area will be contained in mission area manuals. The primary mission of the SFTC Offices is to provide consulting services during initial T&E planning for new programs and major modification/product improvement programs and during T&E investment planning. Also, support is provided for T&E process advocacy, information repository services, and training on the SFTC concept. This paper discusses the USAF SFTC concept of operations and its status.

Abstract:
------ ABSTRACT ------- Violence in schools is constant issue of concern and is becoming a social media phenomenon. Research on bullying and its complexity is crucial due to the social and academic problems associated and the students affected by it. Research on this issue gives emphasis on self-concept and self-esteem, both of these are considered key to prevention/intervention regarding bullying. The present study was carried with a sample of 99 participants from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade; all participants are from the Lisbon District and have answered to two polls: Poll on Social Exclusion and Violence in School and the Pool on Self-Concept for Teens. I intend to verify if there signifícant statistical differences regarding the diffcrent areas of self-concept, and global selfe-esteem regarding those affected by bullying. I conclude that there are signifícant statistical differences regarding social acceptance (between aggressors M = 3,45 and victims M = 2,67), intimate friendship (between non-participants M = 3,31 and victims M = 2,59) and romantic attraction (between aggressors M = 3,00 and victims M = 2,15).

Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze the formation of politeness in the use of Orwell's artificial language, Newspeak. Multiple theories of politeness will be utilized for the examination but with primary focuses on Brown and Levinson's (1987) original theory and Watts' (2003) views on politic behavior. Orwell's (1949) original novel will be used for the grammatical and lexical basis of the language as well as the source for the language's sociolinguistic aspects. It will be shown that politeness is present within the society and its language, even though it is mechanically altered due to the structure of Newspeak. The largest changes are through the realization of face in INGSOC where a hybrid of Western and Eastern social principles are present.

Abstract:
This thesis fits in with a research stream of which the objective is to explain the buyers' judgments of price. The synthesis of the pricing literature allows us to draw the contributions of previous works and to present the broadened notion of price. Two approaches of the widened price concept are considered: the monetary widened price and the perceived sacrifice. The first approach studies the price composition of a complex product according to consumers. The perceived price includes a set of monetary components, which are associated with the purchase of the product like transportation costs and installation charges. The second approach deals with the nonmonetary costs perceived at the time of the purchase such as time, psychological costs and perceived risk. In the second part, an empirical study in the automobile domain is analysed in order to verify the relevance of the broadened price. New car purchasers were initially contacted by telephone and then sent a questionnaire. Results have supported the hypothesis of the widened price. Most buyers perceive a widened monetary price, that is, they take into account several monetary components. Five types of buyers have been distinguished with regard to price perception. The study shows then that the perceived sacrifice is multidimensional. Moreover, consumers don't attach the same importance to the purchase costs. A typology of five groups has been identified and shows that purchase behaviors are different according to the perceived sacrifice. The interest for car manufacturers involves the communication of price and the elaboration of mix according to the perceived costs. In conclusion, the limits and the perspectives of this research are presented to better define this concept

Abstract:
Face recognition is a well-known technique with a wide range of existing real world applications. Residential systems, like video intercom or security alarm, are instead nearly unfamiliar terrain to such methods with few commercial solutions available today in the market. A leading company in the sector has called for a research, with the purpose of assessing the feasibility of equipping their embedded video intercom systems with a feature for automatic identification and authorization of the calling subject. In this paper a combination of face detection and recognition methods on such system has been studied and evaluated, leading to a proof of concept in order to verify the feasibility assumptions, and support the claimant company decision process on investing for prototype development and final product extensions and adjustments. Early promising results suggest that the proposed system could prove usable, complying with constraints such as providing a reasonable recognition rate and execution time, running on embedded hardware and being user-friendly.

Abstract:
The postcolonial novel is linked to the interpretation of History inherent to the african native writer. Without any acceptable understanding for the people concerned, fiction examines and brings out various occulted aspects of History. This study' s purpose is to underline some ways to interpret History other than from a western point of view, allowing the understanding of present History, a theme more and more present with contemporary Ivorian novelists. We propose to analyze the way Ivorian novelists, from the 90's until today, are treating History and how and why they integrate it into their fiction. The management of a european-centered History is a touchy but essential exercise to break the deadlock. Writers are willing to give their people an african History, complicated by colonialism. The study's goal is to show how this development is an urgency for the authors: in fact they try, through fiction, to find answers to the weakening of state structures and to ward off the specter of civil war initiated by the manipulation of the concept of "Ivoirité". The analysis focuses on the mental and cultural representations and we will go through the various literary categories, in order to summarize the way they induce a vision of History

Poullain, Alban. "Contribution au concept d’ambivalence des consommateurs face aux controverses liées aux publicités sexuelles taboues." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PSLED061.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of the public controversies they might lead to, advertisers still use to this day sexual taboo components in their persuasion campaigns. The following thesis means to deepen the understanding of consumers’ responses to these ads, in a postmodern environment where identities are deeply entrenched in important sociocultural and sociopolitical changes. This research highlights the intrinsically postmodern concept of ambivalence, and aims at discovering how the latter influences the consumer’s reception and interpretation of said ads. To this end, this thesis work mobilizes various theories, ranging from ethnology and psychology to sociology and marketing. Via a focus on the controversies provoked by taboo ads, the fieldwork simultaneously used a netnography and phenomenological interviews with photo-elicitation assistance ; both aiming at widening the existing definition of ambivalence, hoping to reuse this very concept as an effective tool to study postmodern audiences’ responses to sexual components in advertising. Moreover, we develop the idea that ads open liminal spaces where taboos and the ethical norms attached to it can be negotiated

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the relation between hypocrisy and the concept of face. It is argued that face is an ideal lens through which to view both the inevitability of hypocrisy and also its various hues. This inevitability is the result of the unavoidability of face in interaction. Face is more than an affective attribute to which homage must be paid. It is the essential means without which most communication would grind to a halt, and in that facework involves interactants giving off impressions of themselves and forming impressions of others present which may not be correct, there is a sense in which face makes hypocrites of us all. Examples of this accidental and essentially beneficial hypocrisy are analysed in support of this argument. The chapter then proceeds to an example of the more obviously beneficial facet of hypocrisy, when it is used to save and/or enhance people’s faces. A subsequent brief consideration of hypocrisy in speech acts again finds that it has positive social value.

Abstract:
After a three-month Covid-19 lockdown, the Spanish national and regional governments implemented stringent rules to curb the pandemic’s spread during the “new normal”. These measures aimed to reduce face-to-face interactions while sustaining economic and educational activities, reshaping social behaviours and perceptions. Notably, a distinct shift occurred in Spain’s landscape of social groups and relationships, traditionally characterised by keywords like familia and amigos/amigas used to refer to close connections. Emerging from political and legal jargon, technical terms such as unidad familiar, conviviente, and grupo burbuja entered the public sphere and everyday conversation. Using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) framework, this study analyses these expressions, revealing that, unlike familia and amigos/amigas, the new terms are primarily grounded in the concept of “space” and lack an inherent emotional component. This finding prompts reflection on the potential impact of these concepts on people’s mindsets in the “new normal” era.

Abstract:
This chapter examines notices that have been translated from Greek into English and are visible in the public spaces of Thessaloniki. It uses photographic data collected during ethnographic fieldwork in the city in 2020, a time that coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic and an increased number of signs. By drawing on Brown and Levinson’s concept of face and more recent discursive approaches to politeness, the chapter explores the ways in which Greek politeness is expressed and rendered into English and how a group of translation students and translation professionals perceive the degree to which the Greek source texts have been successfully rendered into English.

Abstract:
Abstract When the COVID-19 pandemic began, face-to-face teacher education at TU Dresden had to be converted almost overnight into digital education. This digital turn had a particularly strong impact on the Lateral Entry Teacher Education Programme (LETE). The present study focuses on the subjective perceptions of successful learning and helpful support of elementary teacher-students from TU Dresden. It was the main purpose to consider the effect of online-education and adult-education on the pragmatism as a theoretical basis for learning by experience and developing. The results should help with realigned the TU Dresden LETE course concept and practices for future terms. Through a digital qualitative-quantitative questionnaire the data were collected. The lateral entrants’ responses were analyzed using a computer-assisted qualitative content analysis package. This identified learning points within four main themes: (web-based) learning resources, collaboration resources and support structures required by teacher-students and lecturers. Based on the present study, the initial conditions, perceptions and reported experiences of the lateral entrants involved, as well as the adaptations they faced, are outlined and considered.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The offshore deepsea sector has few margins for error, subsea assets at &amp;gt;2000 ft (max≈10000 ft) depth need to engage safe, and efficient, designs which are robust and capable of withstanding extreme sea state stresses and seabed loadings under high internal pressure, and high temperature conditions (HP/HT). On top of the mechanical challenges there are immense demands from the materials and corrosion side. Unpredictable failures can cause major problems regarding HSE, personnel safety, capital investment, and public reputation, not withstanding the fact that remedial action would be extremely difficult and costly. One new approach has been to utilize the concept of Inherently Safe Design (ISD), within the auspices of ALARP. The principle was previously considered too high level and perhaps over esoteric and not cost effective at CAPEX. However after years of limited acceptance it is now more appropriate, and with the result that decisions such as options for CRA`s are being used on a larger scale than ever before. And drivers are now in place to help merge and reconcile CAPEX and OPEX spending, so that costs and resources are shared to the mutual benefit of the project. Carbon steel as a pipeline material with inhibitors has been the staple for years, but with the increased price of steel, well fluid aggressivity and complexity of localized corrosion, (CO2 corrosion in particular), a major series of JIP`s, R&amp;D, and modeling programs have been ongoing with very significant results. The learning’s have been gradually disseminated through the offshore communities; however the pace of progress has not kept up with the demand for pragmatic answers. And to that effect many subsea developments have proceeded to overcome the corrosion issues with an intervention solution such as internal coatings or internal CRA lining or cladding. In particular the use of suitable fit for purpose CRA’s for flowlines had previously seen great promise, but the costs were prohibitive often &amp;gt; 10-15 times the equivalent cost of steel. However the introduction of CRA liners or cladding has proven very successful. In particular the focus has been on the cost manageable alloys such as the austenitic stainless, and nickel based alloys (304, 316, 904, 825, 625 etc). The use of thin, typically 3 mm CRA internal liners designed to form a physical barrier at the fluid interface, within the steel pipe containment can reduce the cost burdens substantially (often &amp;lt;5-7 times equivalent) with the added benefit of fewer corrosion issues, reduced inspection, greater confidence in operability, fewer downtime periods, and lower risk of failure. The duplex CRA’s are also feasible but tend to be used as solid material only rather than clad or lined. A very reasonable track record is being amassed and it is surmised that deepwater assets will now tend to utilize this rapidly evolving approach.

Abstract:
An evolving set of modern conceptual design methods seek to explore the feasibility of a new generation of systems, with new capabilities, to accomplish missions that conventional vehicles cannot be empirically redesigned to perform. These methods attempt to provide a more complete understanding of a concept's design space, and can accurately forecast a design's feasibility in the face of huge uncertainties at the conceptual stage. Modern Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) techniques are evolving to help designers narrow large sets of potential concept architectures while accounting for the uncertainty inherent in early requirements and pre-modeling, expert based assessment. Here, several under-utilized fuzzy MADM methods are introduced and compared to their more recently proposed and utilized probabilistic counterparts. Probabilistic and fuzzy versions of the popular Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods are explored, and their results are applied to the selection of a conceptual system architecture for DARPA's VTOL X-Plane program. Various means for visualizing and comparing the resulting ranks and their related uncertainty are discussed.

Abstract:
The current avionics integration approach is becoming unaffordable partly due to the schedule and cost associated with integrating an avionics system into each configuration of each platform using its native interface. The United States (U.S.) Army's Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) Director for Aviation Development tasked the Modular Integrated Survivability (MIS) team to work with the U.S. Army Aviation Engineering Directorate (AED), the Army's airworthiness authority, to explore innovative integration approaches to streamline the integration process while still satisfying airworthiness certification requirements. AED has been engaged since the inception of the MIS Science and Technology (S&amp;T) program. The MIS team, along with AED, has focused on developing the concept of using capability interfaces to communicate with similar avionics systems. The capability interfaces are built by abstracting the native interfaces allowing for a single integration into the platform for an entire suite of avionics systems. To build upon the capability interface approach, the AMRDEC MIS team has aligned its approach with the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™) Technical Standard to enable portability and reuse of the capability interfaces across platforms. The paper discusses the time and cost challenges of the current avionics integration approach. It explores the MIS integration approach of developing and utilizing capability interfaces to integrate entire avionics system suites. The paper also discusses how incorporating the FACE Reference Architecture into the approach promotes software portability and reuse to reduce integration effort. The paper concludes by discussing the synergy realized by combining the MIS capability interface approach with the software portability enabled by the FACE Technical Standard.

Abstract:
Effective advertising of entrepreneurship is important for its quality and development. Semiotics (the science of sign systems) can help a lot in this respect. One of the main reasons for this is that every semiotic concept is also an efficient communicative approach or a communicative strategy. In this article, its author analyses advertising of entrepreneurship from the standpoints of four semiotic branches - alphabetics, semantics, syntactics and pragmatics. Visual metaphors are central part in these analyses - due to the fact, that the adpersons produce more than 90 percent of creative ads with their help. Ad appeals are the most important part of marketing pragmatics. The author thoroughly studies the eco appeals and the appeals for support (assistance), that are some of the most significant for entrepreneurial marketing communications. The article is important from the perspective of entrepreneurial advertising and provides valuable practical advice on how the adpersons can use semiotic concepts as effective communicative approaches and strategies.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of the immersion of aesthetics in the social, especially when it comes to the documentary theatrical fact, increasingly requires the approach of the work of art, implicitly, the dramatic one, from the perspective of two key concepts — „truth” and „artistic truth”. Appearing at the beginning of the twentieth century, as an anti-canonical form, the documentary theater provoked a series of discussions, some of them denying the concept of „artistic truth” as a characteristic of this spectacular manifestation. Thus, in the article, references are made to different perspectives (ontological, logical-semantic, value-existential and gnoseological), theories (of correspondence, coherence, operational-pragmatics, etc.), while analyzing the relationship „art/documentary theater — truth — artistic truth”.

Abstract:
Description logic knowledge bases can be used to represent knowledge about a particular domain in a formal and unambiguous manner. Their practical relevance has been shown in many research areas, especially in biology and the semantic web. However, the tasks of constructing knowledge bases itself, often performed by human experts, is difficult, time-consuming and expensive. In particular the synthesis of terminological knowledge is a challenge every expert has to face. Because human experts cannot be omitted completely from the construction of knowledge bases, it would therefore be desirable to at least get some support from machines during this process. To this end, we shall investigate in this work an approach which shall allow us to extract terminological knowledge in the form of general concept inclusions from factual data, where the data is given in the form of vertex and edge labeled graphs. As such graphs appear naturally within the scope of the Semantic Web in the form of sets of RDF triples, the presented approach opens up the possibility to extract terminological knowledge from the Linked Open Data Cloud. We shall also present first experimental results showing that our approach has the potential to be useful for practical applications.

Abstract:
The survival of Pacific societies is partly attributed to the ability of Pacific ancestors to transmit stories from generation to generation through myths and legends, stories of creation, songs, oratory, art and natural environments. This paper explores the importance of the practice of Talanoa as a concept and a research tool in promoting Pacific knowledge systems and practices in tertiary education in Aotearoa New Zealand. Talanoa was utilised as the primary research method to gather narratives about how Talanoa is incorporated, from Pacific staff in various roles in tertiary education in a culturally safe and relevant way, both face to face and online. The author also conducted an online survey to gather information about how or whether Talanoa is used widely by Pacific staff in an Aotearoa New Zealand tertiary institution, Unitec New Zealand Limited, before it transitioned fully into the national institute, Te Pūkenga. The research analysed existing literature to ensure that it adds value to this repertoire of knowledge and research. The significance of recognising and acknowledging Pacific oral traditions will add value to and enhance Pacific ways of knowing and engagement in any context. The outcome of this study supports the inclusion of Talanoa as a tool that can be used successfully in tertiary education.

Canto, Patricia, ed. From Plan to Process: Exploring the Leadership Implications of RIS3. Universidad de Deusto, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18543/yxzh8997.

Full text
Abstract:
Regional innovation strategies for smart specialisation (RIS3) are currently receiving much attention in the face of the European Commission’s requirement that all regions develop smart specialisation strategies in order to receive structural funds linked to innovation. Yet the entrepreneurial discovery process that is at the core of the smart specialisation concept remains a black box. The paper looks inside this black box through an exploration of leadership requirements. A review of literature on place leadership and territorial strategy identifies three key considerations for leadership if RIS3 are to result in coherent and successful place based strategies for STI investment: a dualism in reference frame; a mix and rotation of leaderships; and the likely different sources of leaders. These are brought together with analysis of the distinct RIS3 processes in two neighbouring Spanish regions – the Basque Country and Navarre - to highlight a series of implications in terms of the context in which RIS3 develop, the required shift from plans to processes, and the required leadership mix.

Abstract:
This publication accompanies the 2025 exhibition The Air of the Now and Gone, curated by Kirsty Robertson and Sarah E.K. Smith. They ask: in the face of the “wicked problem” of climate change, which precludes easy solutions, how can we move forward? How can we address a crisis that prompts apathy and disconnect? In their introductory essay, Robertson and Smith discuss the works of the artists, who refuse detachment and simultaneously complicate idealism. Like the artists, the curators seek to encourage diverse responses to the realities of climate change, moving beyond apathy and despair to engage empathy, wonder, joy, attentiveness and connection. In their text, Siobhan Angus and Elaina Foley offer a meditation on air and breathing amidst multiple connected climate crises. Kristi Leora Gansworth foregrounds Anishinaabe onáchigewin (prophetic teachings) and inákonigéwin (a concept that denotes action and consequence) in her essay. These she shares as strategies for developing worldviews in line with the Earth’s spark.

Bassi, Andrea. From “Social Impact” to “Social Value”. CIRIEC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.25518/ciriec.wp202206.

Full text
Abstract:
After the financial-economic crisis of 2008 there has been an increasing diffusion of discourses by international institutions stressing the necessity towards the adoption of impact evaluation methods both by for profit and SSE organizations. This craze for impact measurement is generally led by the need of the stock exchange to find new financial markets (demand) for an increasing offer of socially or environmentally oriented financial products (such as the Social Impact Bond). This pressure had the effect to spread terms and concept typically of the financial world to other domains, such as the welfare policy (Social Investment State) and the traditional philanthropic sector (Social Return on Investment). Even the SSE has not been immune from this “epidemic” of measurement, standardization, quantification of its activities’ effects (Salathé-Beaulieu, G. in collaboration with M. J. Bouchard and M. Mendell, 2019). The paper’s main aim is to argue in favour of the adoption of a broader conceptualization of the SSE contribution to the local community (and to the society as a whole) that the one implied by the term “impact”. It proposes a conceptual framework based on the “social value” notion, which requires to consider the worth (Bouchard, M. J. ed., 2009) linked to the presence of the organization itself and not only of its activities/ programs/services. The paper will illustrate and comment the main results from an empirical research on the Social Added Value Evaluation of an umbrella recreation association in the Emilia-Romagna Region. The inquire adopts an experimental design based on qualitative methods such as: focus groups, face to face interviews and on site observations, in order to build a consensual system of social value/impact evaluation to be adopted by the local branches of the regional association.

Abstract:
There is increasing interest in the question of how different stakeholders develop, implement and lead regional upgrading processes with the concept of place leadership emerging as one response to this. Simultaneously, universities face growing expectations that they will contribute to regional development processes – often through their collaborative relationships with other regional stakeholders. But universities are complex in terms of their internal and institutional structures, which undermines their capacities to enact coherent place leadership roles. We seek to understand how strategic leadership in universities can contribute to innovation and regional development in the context of the fundamental institutional complexity of universities. We address this through a qualitative, explorative case study comparing six European regions where universities have sincerely attempted to deliver place leadership roles. We identify that the elements of agency and alignment are vital in that: firstly, university leadership has to align with regional coalitions on the one hand and internal structures on the other hand, and secondly, this leadership must give individuals agency in their regional engagement activities.

Abstract:
Smart cities are rapidly evolving concept-transforming urban developments. They use advanced technologies and data analytics to improve quality of life, increase efficiency of infrastructure and services, and promote sustainable economic growth. They integrate multiple domains to create an interconnected and intelligent urban environment. The implementation of smart city solutions in international contexts was also analyzed and proposes strategies to overcome implementation challenges. The integration of technology and data-driven solutions has potential to revolutionize urban living by providing personalized and accessible services. However, it also presents challenges, including data privacy concerns, unequal access to technology, and the need for collaboration across private, public, and government sectors. This study provides insights into the current state and future prospects of smart cities and presents an analysis of challenges and opportunities. We also propose a concise definition for smart cities: “Smart cities use digital technologies, communication technologies, and data analytics to create an efficient and effective service environment that improves urban quality of life and promotes sustainability.” As cities grow and face increasingly complex challenges, the integration of advanced technologies and data-driven solutions can create more sustainable communities.
