Abstract:
This paper studies the connections between Prakrit and early Maṇipravāḷam literature from premodern Kerala. Maṇipravāḷam (literally, ‘gems and corals’) is the emic term for a dominant part of Kerala’s premodern vernacular literature, binding together Kerala’s local language and Sanskrit. As a highly Sanskritised register of a Dravidian language, Maṇipravāḷam has generally been viewed as having been inspired and influenced by either Sanskrit or Tamil literature, grammar, and poetics. This paper, however, highlights a rarely discussed aspect: the role of Prakrit in shaping both Maṇipravāḷam literature and theory. I discuss the relation between Prakrit and Maṇipravāḷam in two connected ways: first, by considering the similarities between the practices themselves, especially in terms of their themes and aesthetics; and second, by examining the implicit ways in which Maṇipravāḷam theory, as it is presented in the Līlātilakam, Kerala’s first grammar and work on poetics, is structured on Prakrit materials or on Sanskrit materials dealing with Prakrit.

Abstract:
Sound, signs or signals, gestures, urge of transferring higher levels of thinking and feelings and also exchange of ideas were the beginning of the formulation of languages despite the controversies in the origin of languages through the Speculative Theory, Signaling Theory, Mother tongue Hypothesis and so on. Civilization and progress have paved the origin of languages for communication and vice versa. Whatever been the reason and whenever been the time of development of language in this subcontinent or in the Earth, India always possesses a rich linguistic heritage. The Proto-Indo-Aryan language is the prime language of India followed by Old Indo-Aryan covering Vedic-Sanskrit, Classical-Sanskrit; Middle Indo-Aryans of Prakrit, Pali and Modern Indo-Aryan language. This analysis is an attempt to point out the origin of Vedic, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali and Dravidian languages and also these roles in the formulation of other languages and enrichment of in this subcontinent.

Abstract:
Abstract This article continues the discussion on the nature of the early language of Buddhism and the language that the Buddha spoke, arguing that the received Pāli transmission evolved out of an earlier Middle Indic idiom, which is identified as a koine. Evidence for this koine can be found by examining correspondence sets within Pāli and its various varieties and by examining parallel, cognate correspondence sets between Pāli and other Prakrits which have survived. This article compares 30 correspondence sets transmitted in the Dhammapada recensions: the Gāndhārī Prakrit verses, the partially Sanskritized Pāli and Patna Dhammapada Prakrit verses, and the fully Sanskritized verses of the Udānavarga. By comparing cognate words, it demonstrates the existence of an underlying inter-language which in many cases can be shown to be the source of the phonological differences in the transmission. The paper includes a discussion on the two major factors of dialect change, evolution with variation over time, and the diffusionary, synchronic influence of dialect variation; it concludes that both are important, with dialect variation – and the phonological constraints of indigenous speakers who adopted MI as a second language – providing the pathways on which the natural evolutionary process was channeled.

Abstract:
Telugu (tel) belongs to the Dravidian family of languages and is spoken by 7.19% of the population of India (Census of India 2001b). At different stages of its development over centuries, the vocabulary of Telugu has been considerably influenced by various languages, such as Sanskrit, Prakrit,2 Perso-Arabic and English. A major consequence of this influence is that the phonemic system of Telugu has been extended by additional sets of sounds. Thus, the aspirates /pʰ bʱ tʰ dʱ ʈʰ ɖʱ ʧʰ ʤʱ kʰ ɡʱ/ and fricatives /ʃ ʂ h/, absent in the native phonemic system, entered the language through Sanskrit borrowings. Similarly, /f/ entered the language through Perso-Arabic and English borrowings. Some of the sounds from Perso-Arabic and English sources were nativized, for example, Perso-Arabic and English phoneme /ʃ/ was rendered as /ʂ/, which had already entered the language through borrowings from Sanskrit/Prakrit; Perso-Arabic phonemes /qx ɣ z/ were rendered as /kkʰ ɡ ʤ/ respectively; and the English phoneme /θ/ was rendered as /tʰ/. English borrowings also resulted in re-phonemicization. In native Telugu vocabulary, [ɛ] and [ӕː] are allophones of /e/ and /eː/ respectively, but they acquire phonemic status when words borrowed from English are included in the total vocabulary of the language.

Abstract:
Russian Buddhist scholars face the daunting task of translating into Russian the main works of Buddhist heritage currently preserved in the languages of India (P ali, Sanskrit, Prakrit, the hybrid Sanskrit), in Chinese, Tibetan, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian and other languages of East and South Asia. Scholars of no country have so far coped with this task. With regard to the Russian Foederation, Buddhism is the historical religion of several peoples who live there and occupies the minds of literally millions of Russian speakers. Regardless of the fact, that translation of the Buddhist heritage into Russian has been conducted for the last 200 years, one can say that the scholars who deal with this task are still only going through a stage of preparation. Nevertheless, the task of translating into Russian main works of Buddhist heritage was set at the Conference of Buddhist Text Translators, which was held at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) in November 2018 during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Institute (November 6–9, 2018).

Abstract:
Concatenation, that is, the linking of successive verses of a poem by the repetition of the same or similar words, has been discussed by several scholars in relation to Vedic and Prakrit poetry, but other than a ground-breaking article published by W. Schubring in 1955, it has been insufficiently studied in classical Sanskrit kāvya. This article argues that a particular form of concatenation, involving long-distance word repetition across as many as five or even ten verses, is characteristic of the works of Kālidāsa in particular but also of Sanskrit poets in general. Like Schubring’s article, this one focuses on the Meghadūta, but uses a broader definition of scope of concatenation.

Abstract:
Abstract Apart from exegetical texts and short edifying stories, Jain monks wrote several literary narratives in Sanskrit, Prakrit, or Apabhraṃśa, between the 8th and 12th centuries. While they aimed at creating works as sophisticated as Hindu kāvyas in their style and plot, they also included technical passages borrowed from various knowledge systems. One of them is the science of physiognomy, which deals with human marks and their interpretation. In the past decade, K. Zysk has studied this knowledge in various Hindu and Buddhist sources and proposed several hypotheses as regards the development of the science of physiognomy in India. Since passages included in the long Jain medieval narratives have not been taken into account so far, this paper aims at exploring to what extent these sources can throw further light on the gradual establishment of this knowledge system and on its channels of transmission in India.

Arabic pegon script or pegon script is the term of a few Hijaiyah/Arabic letters that is generally modified and used to write in Malay and Javanese. In Madura, East Java, Pegon script is used for the writing in the language of Madura and other languages, such as Java language. Unfortunately, practices of writing with Arabic typography Pegon in everyday life today, especially in the area of Madura, still as though vague, because the practice of typography around the world still dominated by "regimes" in Latin script. Pegon script as the focus of typography, is seen as an instrument to realize the visual language. Visuality of language in the form of Pegon script involving practices of language (Madura language). Pegon script actually is the result of "hard work" of efforts to "reconcile" the letter of the culture that was at first considered foreign (Arab-Islamic) with the local culture, especially the language of the local/indigenous (vernacular language). Now, practices of Pegon script can be said of a shift in usage habits. The practice Pegon script initially suspected rolling as a means of spread and transmission of Islamic knowledge, then it took place as an instrument of islamic education (literacy) in islamic students (santri) society, then it also turned increasingly popular and wider scope in the practice for the daily communications. However, in this era of Latin script, pegon script can be said to be marginalized in the corner of the specific socio-cultural environment, and has failed to return “to play” in the global arena, and tend to be replaced with Latin letters that dominate the world of typography practices.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Project based learning (PBL) refers to an approach to instruction that teaches curriculum concepts through a project espousing principles of learner-centered teaching, learner autonomy, collaborative learning, and learning through tasks. This paper justifies the implementation of PBL to design two main projects and their activities in Creative Writing and Second Language Acquisition classes at English Language Education Program of Dunia University Indonesia (ED-DU). Moreover, the paper details pedagogical practices and learning resources deployed in both classes. The discussions would seem to indicate that the use of PBL grounded in the projects shows a high level of students’ participation in learning, and teachers’ innovative teaching practices. Finally, the paper hopes to provide EFL teachers who have similar teaching practices with practical ideas they can develop to help students achieve particular learning objectives in their classrooms and continue the positive trends of implementing PBL in teaching and learning. Abstract:
Arabic is one of the international languages and the language of the Qur'an widely used in Islam. Learning basic Arabic is important because the language is the foundation of learning Islam. The fault in determining the verb form will relate to wrong meaning. Overcoming the problem, Shorof is a part of the linguistic arabic used to determine the form and utility of a word. Shorof Praktis Krapyak is one of the shorof books that has been widely used by students in Indonesia because of its reliability and simplicity in recognizing the form of Arabic words. The research was conducted to build a system to determine the Arabic verb forms and their utilities by implementing the Depth First Search (DFS) algorithm. DFS is a blind search algorithm in the artificial intelligent discussion that represents a problem into states, generates them systematically and tests them until a goal state is found. Rules made in recognizing the verb form refer to the Shorof Praktis Krapyak which the system is implemented in an Android application. The test results showed that the system can recognize 100 word samples with 100% accuracy. In functionality, all of 30 respondents said that test results stated that the system can run properly. The usability test of the system stated that 55.0% of respondents strongly agreed, 41.6% are agreed and 3.3% choose neutral that this system can help them to recognize and analyze the verb forms in Arabic words.

<p>As a social phenomenon, violence has attracted the interest of social scientists to further study, cultivate and explore its exploratory theorists. One of them is Johan Galtung. This paper explores Galtung's theory of violence in relation to language practice. According to Johan Galtung, violence occurs when humans are affected in such a way that actual physical and mental realizations are under their potential realization. Galtung will see something as violent if in the future the event can be overcome or prevented, but still left. As a symbolic reality, language can not be separated from the inner world of the wearer and the social setting that exists. These include social conflicts such as violence, murder, rape, looting, harassment, robbery, repression, and so on. Coinciding with the violent phenomenon that plagues this nation, modesty or ethical language is now experiencing erosion or extraordinary setbacks. To overcome this, ethics of language decency needs to be addressed in the context of language teaching in Indonesian cultural lands.</p><p> </p><p>Sebagai fenomena sosial, kekerasan telah menarik minat para ilmuwan sosial untuk lebih jauh mempelajari, menggeluti dan mencari teoretis eksplanatorisnya. </p><p> </p><p> </p>

Abstract:
The study of metaphorical discourse in Arabic rhetoric has gone through a long period of time that witnessed enormous books and meticulous studies carried out by a large number of Arab and non-Arab scholars. Nevertheless, these rigorous studies that had enriched the study of Arabic rhetoric only served the study of Islam for Arab and non-Arab muslims. Less has been done on the study of Malay metaphorical discourse and the comparison between both. This paper mainly attempts to discuss a contrastive study of metaphorical discourse in Arabic and Malay rhetoric from the classification and social practices aspects that are implicitly found in the metaphorical discourses in both languages. The perspective of social practice, which is one of the components of Critical Discourse Analysis is aplied in this study. The finding of this study dictates the importance of knowing and understanding the classification of metaphorical discourses in Arabic as well as in Malay rhetoric. It further affirms that efforts are needed to unveil the contrastive metaphorical discourse between Arabic and Malay language, especially in terms of intra-social practices that are obviously embedded in metaphorical discourses in both languages. This in turn, will enhance the pursuit of knowledge among Malay students to undertand metaphorical discourse effectively.

Abstract Although some research on the spoken language and conversational behaviour of older people was conducted in Germany between the late 1990 s and the middle of the noughties, the interest in this field seems to have decreased over the last ten years with studies focusing on written texts produced by older people being virtually non-existent. In contrast to the German-speaking context, Anglo-American research on writing by older adults has flourished since the late 1980 s. This study therefore aims to close a research gap by focusing on writing in German in old(er) age and discusses the specific text genre of calendar entries written by older people. The calendar entries are analysed focusing on text-internal and text-external aspects, such as structure, contents, linguistic features and functional aspects.

Meaning can strengthen and influence everything that a person does, all social practices cannot be separated from the dimensions of discourse. Discourse analysis belongs to the category of critical paradigms. Therefore, the term critical discourse analysis is present to analyze the powers in the text. Critical discourse analysis is used to uncover the power that exists in each language process, the boundaries that are allowed to become discourse, the perspectives used, and the topics discussed, which in this study are news texts. Abstract:
Science and everyday language. Grundtvig’s View of his Native Tongue in Theory and in Practice. As Illustrated by his Article - Om Ordsprog (On Proverbs) 1817By Bodil SchmidtPreserved in the Grundtvig archives are several collections in Grundtvig’s own handwriting of proverbs and popular sayings. In his magazine - Dannevirke - he argued for the preservation of this treasure of Danish proverbs, and urged his readers to assist in their collection. In his demand for a strengthening of the native tongue, Grundtvig was at one with his contemporary romantic poets and philosophers. His article argues for the originality of the Danish language and at the same time protests against the theories that it descends from Icelandic or German. Since his aim is practical, Grundtvig’s article is written in a less philosophical and polemical language than most of the other articles in the magazine. After a lengthy introduction criticising the position of poetry in the 18th century, Grundtvig defines the concept of “proverb” and lists the areas in which proverbs are of importance: language, morals, poetry, history. He follows this with a detailed guide as to how they could be collected. He makes the point, amongst others, that proverbs are useful in the translation of the ancient chronicles of Saxo and Snorre, which he was currently working on. He declares that the aim of his scientific efforts was to protect and enrich the Danish language so that it was qualified to re-awaken the Danish national spirit.A comparison of certain quotations with the common themes of Grundtvig and his colleague in the field, Christian Molbech, shows a marked difference in linguistic style. Where Grundtvig’s language is living, popular and concrete, Molbech’s is academic, stiff and abstract. The quotations included also reveal a decisive difference in the two writers’ view of the people and in their understanding of what the spirit of the people (folkelighed) actually is. Molbech regards “the rough peasant” as a natural creature with no real consciousness and therefore one whom there is no point in trying to enlighten, whereas Grundtvig believes that though the people may be idle and apathetic, they can and must be re-awakened.According to the author of the article there is a parallel between Grundtvig’s attack on the contemporary language of philosophy and our current debate on language being defined politically or ideologically. For Grundtvig, it was obvious that whoever wishes to be understood should use clear and unambiguous language, as close to everyday language as possible. The author asks why, in spite of the advances of science, democratic Denmark should accept that contemporary philosophers, theologians, sociologists and humanists employ a language that we only half understand. Do the Danes still doubt their basic common sense to distinguish between what is true and false? She quotes the proverb: All that glitters is not gold.

Abstract:
This paper is motivated by the Regulation of the Governor of East Java Number 19 of 2014 about the subject of local language as a local content that is required to be taught in elementary schools/madrasah, Madura and Javanese language. In the regulation, Using language is not included as one of the local contents. Meanwhile, the Local Regulation of Banyuwangi stated that Using language should be thought in elementary schools and junior high schools since 2007. It certainly caused paradox between the Regulation of the Governor and the Local Regulation of Banyuwangi Regency. This paper highlights how Using Bayuwangi language has high language vitality and is able to accommodate with other languages (i.e. Gintangan Village, Rogojampi District, Banyuwangi). The ability of Using language to survive within the society obviously draws questions as to why the Regulation of the Governor is unable to observe from the ethics and emic point of views. The ethics point of view mostly theoretically, which is probably temporary and needed to be verified, while the emic point of view tends to be practical, historical and concrete. A compromised solution may needed to be sought, for example only languages that are truly maintained by its people and proved to have high ethnolinguistic vitality that should be preserved, while others probably should be sacrificed.

Abstract:
The theory of modern litery criticism in the West begins with the birth of the theory of formalism in Russia between 1915-1930 developed by Jacobson, shklovsky, Eichenbaum and others. This theory is the foundation stone of modern literary science that formally consider literary work as art of language and sparate the literary works from other social sciences such as psychology, history, and culture. From this formalism theory then was born the theory of structuralism and its various manifold (post-structuralism), such as semiotics, geneticstructuralism, and others. Based on the formalism theory, literary works as autonomous works must be researched in terms of the work itself (intrinsic elemennts), not from outside ( extrinsic elements), because theory more emphasizes on the beauty of literary works. Therefore, what, is needed in criticizing a literary works is close reading, a microscopic reading of literary works as art of language.

The content of all treaties is in Sanskrit language only and in verse format. Hence to simplify the same various pramanas (epistemology) has been used effectively. Upamana pramana (analogy) is one of the types of pramana which is widely utilised in explanation of Sharir concepts. Upamana pramana enlightens the features of un-manifested things with a familiar or manifested thing based on similarities. These analogies are found to be helpful in understanding the basic concepts of Kriya Sharir like prakriti and Dhatusarata. Application of Upamana pramana (analogy) to interpret the same can be highly appreciated. Concept of ‘Anukatva’ is the best example of utilization of analogy. But on the other hand, this diversity can be a potential conflict in the midst of society. Therefore, the understanding of the motto of "bhineka tunggal ika" should be instilled to the young generation from an early age so that they can play a role in maintaining unity amid the pluralism of the nation. One effort that can be realized in order to respond to this problem is to implement the concept of multicultural education (multicultural education) in education in Indonesia.
