Full textAmong recognitions concerning the specificity of culture of diasporic Jews there is a recurrently repeated concept of the ghetto. Indeed, the ghetto as a figure of Jewish isolation, and consequently, as it was taken for granted, also backwardness, has become one of the most significant categories shaping and fertilising collective imaginaries. It seems to be relevant in the process of Jewish self-understanding, self-emancipation, as well as widely meant modernisation, especially in the long 19th century. Moreover, a number of the contemporaries using the term ‘ghetto’ did not be content with a general statement of the ghetto existence. Quite the contrary, for the sake of (self-)emancipation and modernisation, they were willing to confer particular rituals and cultural practices, including minhagim (Hebr. ‘customs’), as metonymies of the ghetto, its epitomes, or, in other words, bricks of its mythical walls. In my dissertation, basing on the collected manifold materials (press, pamphlets, works of literature, memoirs, various forms of iconography), mainly created in the Kingdom of Poland throughout the decades 1845–1914, I intend to show a repertoire of the ghetto metonymies. Having considered the relevance of tsarist projects of unification, I have indicated the year 1845 as the one of time frames. It is worth noting the year 1845 was the very beginning of ‘reforms’ of traditional Jewish attire which were being imposed throughout decades by the Russian government. Having found no significant other frame, I point the outbreak of the First World War as the end of the époque. Focusing first and foremost on the chosen issues: cultural practices concerning Jewish women hair, as well as circumcision and ritual slaughtering, I highlight several threads occurring at the interface of Judaism, modernisation, medicine, fashions, and aspirations of emerging social movements. I tend to show the mentioned core issues in their contexts as being involved in nets of manifold mutual relationships with other conferred aspects. Not neglecting the importance of debates about circumcision in its most typical form, I deliberately focus on the case of a post-mortem rite. But for that, I would not have been able to confer a set of issues concerning not only funeral practices but also a status of a human corpse. Apart from that, in my dissertation, I trace points of cracking, non-obviousness, and alleged examples of overexposure phenomena. Being inspired by the Ludwik Fleck’s theory of socially conditioned perception, I try to apply that to my research quite extensively. Having considered the relevance of the collective itself, I confer, for instance, potential reasons for absence of particular issues expected to have been occurred in debates among animal protection societies. Therefore, one of the recurrently returning questions does concern forms of transmission widely meant knowledge and social thresholds.

Full textThe dissertation is devoted to visual practices related to the Smolensk catastrophe. The crash of the presidential plane is treated here not as a breakthrough event radically rebuilding social sphere, but as the subject of numerous representations, imaginations and fantasies through which the social hierarchies and political identities are negotiated. The aim of the dissertation is to study selected images and sets of practices in which these images participate. Criteria for choosing subjects of analysis were related to their tactical utility in the cultural process of constructing political identities. The very concept of tactics has been borrowed from Michel de Certeau. The main methodological framework of the dissertation is constituted of methods and tools developed as part of visual culture studies – a relatively young scientific discipline, initiated in the United States by such researchers as W.J.T. Mitchell or Nicholas Mirzoeff. Their diagnoses allow for studying a wide range of images – both these that are considered significant and these labelled as ‘trivial’; ‘artistic’ and ‘vernacular’; cherished by wide and narrow audiences. Hence images discussed in the dissertation include: photographs of Donald Tusk and Vladimir Putin at the crash site (reproduced on covers of right-wing media outlets and reused by creators of numerous internet memes), a political advert Leader about Jaroslaw Kaczyński, videos created by anonymous YouTube users on the causes of the catastrophe, Smolensk feature film directed by Antoni Krauze as well as Solidarni 2010 and Krzyż (The Cross) – documentaries by Ewa Stankiewicz. All these images are analysed as elements of a complex sphere of visuality which includes also discursive and imaginary practices, aimed at constructing the definitions and boundaries of the Polish community. The eternally undone status of this task is diagnosed as the ‘problem of “doubling”’, which constitutes also a conceptual framework for the dissertation. This problem refers primarily to the paradoxical status of the Polish periphery, where all attempts to stabilise identity lead to establishing it as an internal fracture, expressed here as a conflict between "advocates of normalisation" and "defenders of the national community" (these terms were borrowed from Maciej Gdula). The peripheral identity is constructed through a meeting with an interiorised other who is given a role of an absolute enemy or a persecuting double. This paradox manifests itself in post-Smolensk crash visual practices which serve – firstly – to reveal the inappropriate, usurping identity of this "internal other" and – secondly – to exclude it from the community in order to protect its integrity and undivided unity. The structure of the dissertation (consisting of two parts) mirrors the ambivalence and two-fold character of these practices. The concept of ‘doubling’ is constructed here both with the help of theoretical frameworks (in particular – postcolonial theory) and through the texts of culture borrowed from other contexts (including literary and cinematographic works), reconstructed in such a way that they could serve as figures illustrating this concept.

Full textThe objective of the project is to recognize modern sincerity as a cultural category of modern Western culture, to reconstruct its history and dynamics and to indicate its tensions and paradoxes. Modern sincerity becomes an important cultural category when within cultural practices one problematises the truth about one's own “self” while in conjuncture with the issue of expressing this truth to others. The modern idea that people, like Jean Jacques Rousseau in the Confessions, should show themselves “in all the truth” is a result of long-term, complex changes which should be explored in the perspective of anthropologically oriented cultural history. The relationship between the inception of the “authentic self” and the change in concepts of communication seems to be of crucial importance for this process. Noticing this relationship not only allows us to describe the historical changes but also creates a new perspective for analysing the tensions typical of modernity – it allows us to see that not only the modern concept of the self, but also the modern concept of communication as expression is a historical construct shaped in the 18th and the beginning of 19th century. My dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first one I make an attempt to sketch the general model of this change basing on the works of other researchers and my own analyses of chosen texts from the European tradition which bear testimony to this change (such as La princesse de Clèves by Marie de la Fayette; Earl of Chesterfield's Letters to his Son; Julie, ou La Nouvelle Héloïse and Confessions by Jean Jacques Rousseau). The second part is an application of previously constructed model to Polish material. The aim is to describe the transition from emotional and communicational patterns characteristic of traditional culture of Polish nobility (Sarmatism) to those characteristic of romanticism. The main subject of my research is letter-writing understood as a cultural practice embedded in everyday life. I analyse letter-writing manuals and correspondence of The Philomats and Juliusz Słowacki's family.
