Abstract:
The history of mining and exploration in Panama is a case study of the evolution of mining in a tropical, island arc environment in the New World from prehistoric to modern times over a period of ~1900 years. Panama has a strong mineral endowment of gold (~984 t), and copper (~32 Mt) resulting in a rich mining heritage. The mining history can be divided into five periods. The first was the pre-Columbian period of gold mining from near the start of the Current Era at ~100 CE to 1501, following the introduced of gold metalwork fully fledged from Colombia. Mining of gold took place from placer an

Tourist brochures inform visitors that “Panamá” meant “abundance of fish” to the original inhabitants. This is hardly surprising on a narrow isthmus bathed by two contrasting oceans. Coastal and riverine resources played a fundamental role in the diet and economy of native isthmian cultures as perceived from archaeological evidence and ethnohistoric accounts. This chapter focuses on the protracted pre-Columbian fishing strategies and preferences along the Pacific coast and on continental (platform) islands. Owing to high tidal ranges and the discharge of sizeable rivers, some estuarine flats o

This paper presents a summary of avifaunas found at residential and mortu- ary sites from two areas of Panama: Parita Bay and the Pearl Islands Ar- chipelago. Despite relying on samples often few in number, the taxonomic diversity of birds recorded in contexts belonging to 10 archaeological sites is much greater than that of other vertebrate classes (except fish). Although a considerable number of Neotropical bird orders and families share the problem that it is impossible to separate their members osteologically, our analysis concentrates on data pertaining to the taxonomic levels of genera a

Excavations at the Vampiros rockshelters produced a large quantity of in- vertebrate and vertebrate specimens, as well as ceramics and stone-tool arti- facts, dating between ca. 2200 and 1150 BP. At this site people were exploit- ing shells near the coast along intertidal mudflats close to the river’s mouth. When both rockshelters were first occupied by ceramic-using communities around 2300 BP, the surrounding marine ecosystem consisted of clear water and a hard substrate shoreline not far from the coast. At the end of the occu- pation, the species reveal ecosystems characterized by mangrove,
