This study focuses on the teaching and learning of the pre-numeracy concepts through technology at Foundation Phase. It pre-supposes that the use of information and communication technology resources presents an innovative way to improve teaching and learning mathematics. The author argues that young children's relational conceptions of number lie at the core of their mathematics education as any subsequent mathematics learning heavily depends on it. ABSTRACT In a series of papers Ladyman and Presnell raise an interesting challenge of providing a pre-mathematical justification for homotopy type theory. In response, they propose what they claim to be an informal semantics for homotopy type theory where types and terms are regarded as mathematical concepts. The aim of this paper is to raise some issues which need to be resolved for the successful development of their types-as-concepts interpretation.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Studying pre-2000s pink porn magazines reveals the importance of politics in-between in the development of LGBTQ transnational organising in the twentieth century. The usual historical narratives of LGBTQ politics in the North are based on medical or legislative documents or on self-identified queers’ descriptions of their own interactions with these discourses. However, these discourses and data only capture parts of how twentieth-century queers developed sexual subjectivity, became nationally and transnationally organised, and conducted sexual politics. This chapter uses Claire Colebrook’s (Understanding Deleuze. Australia: Allen and Unwin, 2002) feminist engagement in Deleuze’s and Guattari’s concept device to discuss transnational political networks that rhizomatically connected the makers, disseminators and subscribers of male same-sex porn magazines produced in Denmark and Sweden between 1960 and 1980. The concepts enable an analysis of the messy entanglement of desire, subjectivity processes, consumption, organising and activism, and of the shaping of certain queer communities of belonging while also excluding others. The application of gender analysis to the entanglement of pink porn economies in queer transnational networks sheds a genealogical light on the historical division between the emergence of vis-à-vis lesbian and gay networks and politics—and on the tensions between them regarding so-called positive or negative sexual rights in the decades to come.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 focuses on theory and empirical strategy. The chapter defines status and situates it against oft-interchanged concepts like honor, prestige, and reputation, and identifies gaps in the status literature. The chapter then explains when China is most status sensitive—i.e. that status drivers can trump other concerns regarding intervention—when there are two components. First, when China’s peer groups are able to exact social costs or social benefits on China by way of social influence. China’s peer groups are most able to do so when they are cohesive with no significant defectors from the peer group, unified around a single policy position, and willing to exact social costs on China for not executing their policy prescription. With these conditions met, peer groups have narrowed and defined policy options for China, so China can clearly understand what the peer group expectations are. A second component is the presence of a status trigger. Status triggers heighten or accentuate China’s pre-existing status concerns by emphasizing China’s isolation from its peer groups, making China more susceptible to status pressures. Status triggers are either speech acts that draw a contemporary parallel to a low status time in China’s foreign policy or attacks on China’s high-profile status-rewarding events. The chapter specifies why the great powers and the Global South are China’s peer groups for intervention, and debunks the popular assumption that Russia stands as China’s peer in the context of intervention.

Project-based instruction (PBI) is gaining prominence in the USA as an instructional innovation that promotes deep and connected understanding in mathematics. In this paper, I describe a program developed at the University of Texas at Austin known as UTeach that is being replicated in 45 universities across the USA. Concepts of inquiry teaching, problem-based and projectbased instruction are developed across the program. In this paper I argue that the structure, timing and location of student teaching impacts whether or not pre-service teachers are able to implement PBI during student teaching, which in turn impacts satisfaction with the student teaching experience and ultimately the intention to enter and continue in the teaching profession.

Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to show how information communication technologies (ICT) facilitated communication between primary pre-service teachers that enabled a ‘community of learners’ to develop children’s scientific literacy. Cultural-historical theory was used to frame a study that sought to explicitly go beyond thinking as being individualistic, and to show how thinking can also be considered as a collective endeavour. In particular the study identifies how thinking forms part of a ‘community of learners’ both virtually and in reality within classrooms. The study was able to make visible child and pre-service teacher interactional sequences that brought together everyday concepts and scientific concepts to support concept formation in science. The study revealed the dialectical relations between everyday concepts and scientific concepts for moving from an interpsychological level to an intrapsychological level. The collective, rather than the individual orientation, made such a perspective possible. Importantly, the use of ICTs facilitated communication between members of the collective.

Abstract:
The study considered how ethno-Mathematics approach could be brandished to serve as an interface to improving UBE students’ interest and achievement in number and numeration (NN). The study was carried out in Obudu, a rural community in Cross River State of Nigeria. It adopted a quasi-experimental of pre-test post-test control groups design with intact classes used. Population of study comprised all the 6,226 upper basic education students from the 23 government controlled basic education schools in the study area. Two instruments were used for data collection. The study found among other things that when ethnomathematics was properly brandished, the UBE students improved in their interest and achievement in the NN concepts taught during the period of this study. It was also found that the initial noted gap between the male and female UBE students’ interest and achievement in NN was drastically reduced. Full text
Abstract:
The cognitive ability to process kinesic stimuli is nonverbal. Sensorimotor concepts are predictive and operate primarily outside of language. Human beings are able to perform a precise gesture without knowing how to account for it verbally. In literature, verbal artists work with the connections afforded in their language between sensorimotor and verbal concepts. In turn, the act of reading their texts taps into readers’ kinesic intelligence and their ability to connect a verbal concept of movement to a sensorial and motor concept. When writers play with such connections, kinesic humor in literature is liable to be experienced. In such instances, shifts in rhythm, tonicity, and kinesthetic intensity are paramount within readers’ perceptual simulations. While perceptual simulations are the prime trigger of an experience of humor, they generally remain pre-reflective. They can, however, become a focus of reflective attention. The introduction to Kinesic Humor provides a theory for this claim, and substantiates it with preliminary literary examples.

Abstract:
The statistical mechanics of atomic motion in gases and solids have convenient starting points. For gases it is the ideal gas limit where intermolecular interactions are disregarded. In solids, the equilibrium structure is pre-determined, the dynamics at normal temperature is characterized by small amplitude motions about this structure and the starting point for the description of such motions is the harmonic approximation that makes it possible to describe the system in terms of noninteracting normal modes (phonons). Liquids are considerably more difficult to describe on the atomic/molecular level: their densities are of the same order as those of the corresponding solids, however, they lack symmetry and rigidity and, with time, their particles execute large-scale motions. Expansion about a noninteracting particle picture is therefore not an option for liquids. On the other hand, with the exclusion of low molecular mass liquids such as hydrogen and helium, and of liquid metals where some properties are dominated by the conduction electrons, classical mechanics usually provides a reasonable approximation for liquids at and above room temperature. For such systems concepts from probability theory (see Section 1.1.1) will be seen to be quite useful. This chapter introduces the reader to basic concepts in the theory of classical liquids. It should be emphasized that the theory itself is general and can be applied to classical solids and gases as well, as exemplified by the derivation of the virial expansion is Section 5.6 below. We shall limit ourselves only to concepts and methods needed for the rest of our discussion of dynamical processes in such environments.

Abstract:
Dynamics of Machinery is a traditional engineering course based on long-standing kinematic theory and proven practices. Given the established nature of the class, Dynamic of Machinery could be considered for a flipped classroom model in which students watch a prerecorded lecture prior to class, and then spend class time practicing the theory through examples. One of the limitations to the flipped model is the concern that students have not fully grasped the material from the recorded lecture. This paper suggests the use of a concept quiz associated with each pre-recorded lecture as a required

The goal of science education is emphatically positioned on promoting science literacy. The rationale is learners should not only learn about scientific knowledge and processes but also on how to apply the knowledge when making decisions about heterogenous societal and personal issues. Previous research has indicated that by addressing socioscientific issues (SSIs) when teaching controversial science topics, it provides a suitable context for developing scientific literacy in learners. Scientifically literate learners are well-informed citizens with regards to the social, ethical, economic, an

Abstract Modern hydraulic fracture treatments rely heavily on the implementation of formation property details such as in-situ stresses and rock mechanical properties, in order to optimize stimulation designs for specific reservoir targets. Log derived strain and strength calibrated in-situ properties provide critical description of stress variations in different lithologies and at varying depths. From a practical standpoint however, most of the hydraulic fracture simulators that are used for fracturing treatment design purposes today can accommodate only a limited portion of a geologic-based

This paper presents an energy relaxation-based approach for the modeling of single crystalline magnetic shape memory alloy response under general two-dimensional magneto-mechanical loading. It relies on concepts of energy relaxation in the context of non-convex free energy landscapes whose wells define preferred states of straining and magnetization. The constrained theory of magnetoelasticity developed by DeSimone and James [1] forms the basis for the model development. The key features that characterize the extended approach are (i) dissipative effects, accounted for in an incremental variat

The summative external evaluation report described the program's impact on faculty and students participating in recitation sessions and active teaching professional development sessions over two years. Student persistence and retention in engineering courses continue to be a challenge in undergraduate education, especially for students underrepresented in engineering disciplines. The program's goal was to use peer-facilitated instruction in core engineering courses known to have high attrition rates to retain underrepresented students, especially women, in engineering to diversify and broaden

Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence

Grand Canyon National Park is all about time and timescales. Time is the currency of our daily life, of history, and of biological evolution. Grand Canyon’s beauty has inspired explorers, artists, and poets. Behind it all, Grand Canyon’s geology and sense of timelessness are among its most prominent and important resources. Grand Canyon has an exceptionally complete and well-exposed rock record of Earth’s history. It is an ideal place to gain a sense of geologic (or deep) time.
