Abstract:
AbstractObjectives:This study aimed to radiologically evaluate the influence of inflammatory changes in frontal recess cells on frontal sinusitis. Methods:A total of 93 patients (186 sides) who underwent primary sinonasal surgery at Hyogo College of Medicine were enrolled in 2015 and 2016. Opacification of agger nasi, fronto-ethmoidal, ethmoid bulla, suprabullar and frontal bulla cells was determined by pre-operative computed tomography and its influence on frontal sinusitis was investigated. Results:In all, 42 per cent of 186 sides were affected by frontal sinusitis. Agger nasi, ethmoid bulla, fronto-ethmoidal, suprabullar and frontal bulla cells were identified in 99 per cent, 100 per cent, 38 per cent, 69 per cent, and 16 per cent of sides, respectively. The presence of frontal recess cells and frontal ostium size did not significantly influence frontal sinusitis development. However, opacification of agger nasi, type 1 fronto-ethmoidal and suprabullar cells significantly influenced frontal sinusitis development. Conclusion:Frontal sinusitis is caused by inflammatory changes in frontal recess cells.

Abstract:
The article again raises the question of the concept of proof in criminal proceedings. The adoption of the Code of Criminal Procedure in 2001, based on principles different from those of earlier times, did not lead to any noticeable revision of the postulates of the theory of evidence, including the concept of proof, but further aggravated the long-known contradictions. The incompatibility of the ideas of proving, which developed in the previous period of our history, as a cognitive activity aimed at establishing objective truth, with the principles of the presumption of innocence and competition is far from obvious to everyone, so the author of the article attempts to separate two fundamentally different approaches to the concept of proof between two fundamentally different parts of the criminal process and thereby reconcile the irreconcilable sides of the scientific discussion.

Lately, despite successful interaction between Russia and the USA on a number of issues, both in Moscow and across the pond a discussion on the bilateral relations perspectives is launched increasingly. Serious questions of the mutual trust level arise. The toughening of rhetoric and demonstrative political actions is evident from both sides. Obviously, the outlined regressive trend has pre-elective nature. However, in prospect, the situation can take on its internal development logic. The author examines the possible roadmap of Russia-U.S. cooperation continuance, in particular touches the question of the "restart" fortune.

Abstract:
Qalandars have often been depicted in negative terms in medieval and pre-modern literature by Sufis themselves, clerics and historians. Treatises composed by Qalandars are rare, thus the possibility of producing a balanced survey of their form of Sufism and contribution to the socio-political and religious climate of any given period is difficult. One such text, the “Sulīmān Qalandar Nāma”, however, completed in 1668, offers an intriguing perspective of Qalandars in late Safavid Iran. An analysis of this text, along with a focus on the dynamics of late Safavid religion and politics suggests that far from being antinomian and otherworldly Sufis, these Qalandars were supportive of the Shīʿa Safavid dynasty. The text offers an interesting marriage between traditional Qalandar themes and those inspired by Shīʿa Islam, and it testifies to the continuing importance of the Qalandars, providing evidence for the cultural continuity of this form of Sufism in the region.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) are frequently associated with foodborne illness outbreaks, especially attributable to beef. Intervention methods, such as water washes and organic acid application, are widely implemented across the beef industry to combat this risk. This research evaluates the efficacy of intervention methods applied to chilled beef subprimal pieces and pre-rigor beef carcasses to reduce STEC contamination. Beef strip loins were inoculated (ca. 5 log CFU/cm²) with a 7-serotype STEC cocktail and sprayed with increasing concentrations of peracetic acid (200-1800 ppm; ambient temperature), lactic acid (3-10%; 55°C), or a water control before being vacuum-packaged and stored for 24 h at 4°C. Meat surface excision samples and color readings (L*, a*, and b*) were obtained from each subprimal at three sampling points: post-inoculation, 5 min post chemical spray, and post-24 h vacuum packaged chilling. Peracetic acid spray and lactic acid spray reduced STEC populations by 0.5 -1.3 log CFU/cm² and 0.2 – 0.7 log CFU/cm², respectively, across the incremental concentration increases. All concentrations of peracetic acid and lactic acid concentrations ≥3.5% reduced (P ≤ 0.05) STEC populations compared to their respective control. Application of higher concentrations of lactic acid (7-10%) decreased (P ≤ 0.05) L* and b* values compared to the control, indicating that quality attributes of the subprimals were negatively effected. Carcass intervention methods were evaluated using a three-stage commercial carcass washing cabinet (Chad Equipment). Four pre-rigor carcass sides were inoculated by electrostatically spraying with a 7-serogroup STEC cocktail (ca. 6.5 log CFU/100 cm²). Three treatments were applied, in order, to each side: ambient water wash, hot water wash (82-92°C at the nozzle head), and antimicrobial mist. Meat surface excision samples were taken from the bottom, middle, and top section of each carcass side at five sampling points: 30 min post-inoculation, post-ambient water wash, post-hot water wash, post-antimicrobial spray, and after 18 h spray chilling. The combination of the high-volume ambient water wash stage and subsequent hot water wash stage reduced STEC populations on sides by 3.5, 4.7, and 4.8 log CFU/100 cm² at the bottom, middle, and top of the carcass, respectively. Due to STEC populations declining to very low or undetectable levels after the hot water stage, minimal additional STEC reductions were observed after chemical spray application and chilling. Sequential antimicrobial treatments applied using a three-stage Chad carcass wash cabinet and a subsequent chill step reduced STEC populations on pre-rigor beef carcasses by 4.5 – 5.3 log CFU/100 cm².

Abstract:
The current essay aims to highlighting the importance of Magris’ Utopia e disincanto. The year of its first publication (1999) was a watershed moment in his career, as it paved the way to a new season of public engagement and historical analysis, which can be also seen in his later essays and novels. Twenty years later, Utopia e disincanto is still a manifesto for modernity, a deeply contemporary book where Magris’ analytical view is headed towards an idea of universal literature, an idea of Weltliteratur that should be a tool to understand the changes in which mankind is involved. Literature is meant to be a tool to investigate the dark sides hidden among the folds of History

Abstract:
AbstractHong Kong has a dual land regime in the urban and rural territories. The urban areas on both sides of Victoria Harbour (8.8% of land, excluding Country Parks on Hong Kong Island) and new towns (about 15.3% of land) house over 90% of the city’s population (about 7.5 million) with an extremely high population density of about 26,000 per km2. After deducting Country Parks and Special Areas (about 40% of land), the rest of the rural New Territories (traditional settlements leased by the British Government in 1898 for 99 years) constitutes about 35% of land, but houses 5.5% of all residents with a substantially lower population density of about 1,000 per km2. China’s Open Door Policy since 1978 has led to economic restructuring in Hong Kong, changing its occupational structure, intensifying income inequality, and leading to socio-economic and spatial segregation. Whilst the affluent classes continue to concentrate in traditionally central locations in urban areas, or in luxurious residential enclaves in rural New Territories, the less well-off tend to be marginalised and live in remote new towns or rural New Territories. The latter is also a result of a skewed power relationship between the government and the property sector in directing spatial development that breeds a hegemonic (dis)course and regime of urban-biased and property-dominant development, sustaining the government’s coffer through a high land price policy.

Abstract:
Production before the advent of magnetic tape—in the era of 78-RPM records—emphasized "pre-production." A&R men (short for "artists and repertoire") chose artists to record, and they paired songs from the publishing firms of Tin Pan Alley with artists. The A&R work of Milt Gabler (at Commodore and Decca Records) and John Hammond and George Avakian (at Columbia) is exemplary. Gabler organized a series of jam sessions, which he recorded. Avakian produced Chicago Jazz (1940), the first jazz "album" of original material. As part of their popular music divisions the major labels—Columbia, Decca, and RCA Victor—record and market jazz. A number of specialty labels emerge: Commodore, Prestige, Contemporary, Verve, Blue Note, Atlantic, Riverside, and Savoy. Though dependent on pressing plants owned by the majors, they reflect the production philosophies of the connoisseurs who founded and owned them.

This chapter analyses distinctions in how Catholic teachings on charity and good works were understood by Catholics and Protestants, with both sides perceiving disparate moral consequences for both giver and receiver in the alms-giving transaction. The exploration of Catholic approaches to poverty, mendicancy and alms-giving are presented in two sections – the first analysing discourses, the second examining actions. Case studies are presented of the views and actions of Archbishop Daniel Murray, and Mary Aikenhead and the Religious Sisters of Charity, while the question of indiscriminate alms-giving is also considered.

Abstract:
The introduction of a pre-communion examination in Wittenberg was the catalyst for the incorporation of a section on the Lord’s Supper into the earliest evangelical catechisms, which began to be produced in 1525. Throughout the second half of the 1520s, Luther’s sermons on communion preparation increasingly emphasized belief in Christ’s bodily presence, but this emphasis was not reflected in catechisms written outside of Wittenberg, which continued to teach positions from Luther’s pre-1525 writings. There were very few sacramentarian catechisms, with the most important being the Strasbourg catechism by Wolfgang Capito. The St. Gallen catechism modified the older catechism of the Bohemian Brethren, while the communion preparation advice produced in Augsburg emphasized positions both sides could accept.

Abstract:
Responding to Kissinger’s “indiscretion” about expulsion of the Soviets from Egypt as a US objective, in May 1971 President Sadat offered to end the presence of Soviet troops (but not advisers) as part of an interim settlement with Israel. However, he relayed it through Secretary Rogers, who after the failure of his peace plan was losing influence to Kissinger, and there was no US response. Simultaneously Sadat was reported to have foiled a pro-Soviet coup (which elevated the Israeli informant Ashraf Marwan to a higher position), but Egypt’s alleged turn against Moscow was disproved when Soviet president Podgorny visited Cairo again and signed a 15-year friendship treaty. Still, suspicions in Moscow about Sadat’s loyalty and recognition of the drawbacks of its rupture with Israel led to missions there by journalist Victor Louis and KGB operative Evgeny Primakov, which produced no breakthrough. The USSR continued to demand a settlement leading to full Israeli withdrawal as a component of détente, to be concluded at a Moscow summit with was now scheduled for May ’72.

Abstract:
The closing chapter concludes the book by summarising the findings of the analysis into forty years of peacemaking and war experience in Northern Ireland and Turkey, and how these might be applied to other ethno-nationalist conflicts in which similar peace processes have been instituted. This chapter discusses the implications of the policies applied in the two specified conflicts for conflict resolution theory more broadly and lays out a framework for further research in the field. It argues that there is a complementarity between three major aspects of conflict resolution processes: backchannel communications, as the unofficial aspect; peace organisations, as the informal and semi-official aspect; and official negotiations, as the official aspect. The conflict resolution processes in these two cases encouraged the conflicting sides to consider talks and to enter into a negotiation process at the pre-negotiation stage. The processes then intended to reach a peace agreement during the negotiation stage. This book has suggested that a peace agreement requires mediation by an independent third party: between the British government and their adversaries, the IRA and the republican movement, in one case, and the Turkish government and their adversaries, the PKK and pro-Kurdish movement in the other.

Abstract:
Under-platform dampers are used to reduce resonant stresses in turbine blades to avoid high cycle fatigue failures. In this paper a model of semi-cylindrical under-platform damper (i.e. with one flat side and one curved side) for turbine blades is described. The damper kinematics is characterized by three degrees of freedom (DOFs): in-plane translations and rotation. Static normal loads acting on the damper sides are computed using the three static balance equations of the damper. Non-uniqueness of normal pre-loads acting on the damper sides is highlighted. Implementation of the model in a numerical code for the forced response calculation of turbine blades with under-platform dampers shows that non-uniqueness of normal pre-loads leads to non-uniqueness of the forced response of the system. A numerical test case is presented to show the capabilities of the model and to analyze the effect of the main system parameters (damper mass, excitation force, coefficient of friction and damper rotation) on the damper behavior and on the system dynamics.

Abstract:
The pentagon as a tool for fortresses’ drawingStarting from the fifteenth century, the diagram of many fortresses has a pentagonal shape. Among the best known fortresses, in Italy we find the Fortezza da Basso of Florence, the Cittadella of Parma, the Cittadella of Turin, Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. The aim of this article is to analyze the reasons that link form and geometry to the planning of the design and the layout of pentagonal fortresses. The pentagon is a polygon tied to the golden section and to the Fibonacci sequence and it is possible to construct it starting from the golden triangle and its gnomon. This construction of the pentagon is already found in the book De Divina Proportione by Luca Pacioli and is particularly convenient for planning pentagonal fortresses. If one wants to draw the first approximated golden triangle, one can just consider the numbers of the Fibonacci sequence, for example 5 and 8, which establish the relationship between the sides: 5 units is the length of the base and 8 units the length of the equal sides. In the second isosceles triangle, which is the gnomon of the first, the base is 8 units long and equal sides are 5 units long; half of this isosceles triangle is the Pythagorean triangle (3, 4, 5). This characteristic of the golden triangles, that was already known by the Pythagoreans and, in a certain sense, contained in the symbol of their School, allows to build a pentagon with only the use of the ruler and the set square. The distinctive trait of the construction just described makes preferable to use the pentagon in the layout of the military architectures in the fieldworks. We have verified the relationship between numbers, shape and size in the layout of Castel Sant’Angelo (1555-1559) in which the approximate pentagon was the instrument for the generation of its form.

Abstract:
In order to effectively improve hydraulic performance of centrifugal pump on off-conditions, the hydraulic design of inlet guide vane (IGV) was completed by adopting two dimensional theory in-house code based on one kind of IS series of centrifugal pump, which can achieve pre-whirl regulation of centrifugal pump. During design process the trailing edge of vane is assumed as equal velocity moment condition, and the distribution of vane setting angle along meridional streamline is also given as a quartic function firstly, the camber line is then drawn by point-by-point integration method and thickened at both sides along circumferential direction. With local vortex dynamics diagnosis theory, the optimal improvement of vane space shape can be finished by adjusting the design parameters of vane setting angle distribution coefficient ap. The full flow passage numerical simulations of centrifugal pump with IGV device are completed to analyze the influence of pre-whirl regulation on hydraulic performance of centrifugal pump under various pre-whirl angles. The results show that the pre-whirl regulation can improve the hydraulic performance of centrifugal pump on off-conditions. Under the positive pre-whirl regulation conditions, the best efficient point shift to small flow rate zone, and under the negative pre-whirl regulation conditions it moves to large flow rate zone. Compared with the pump without IGV device at the same flow rate condition of 0.8Q (Q the design flow rate), the hydraulic efficiency of centrifugal pump with IGV device improves obviously and reaches up to 1.43%. Meanwhile compared with that installed with the straight vanes designed based on the traditional theory, the inner flow field of centrifugal pump with the designed vanes improves and the overall hydraulic efficiency of centrifugal pump is somewhat increased.

Abstract:
Abstract Every day huge amount of energy is released to the atmosphere in form of waste heat. The search of a cleaner and more efficient society, not only at industrial level but also at domestic level, should avoid this type of emissions. Steelmaking is an example of an industrial sector with high optimization potential in energy management. In this line, this work presents the main outcomes of the investigation carried out in the search of a technical solution for heat capture and reutilization from one of the main waste heat streams in the steelworks, the molten slag. For this purpose, a piping system embedded in the slag pit soil is proposed as satisfactory solution for the heat capture operation. Besides, the internal applicability of this recovered heat is also addressed. Overall, the analysis carried out allows the identification of the main process parameters that limit the heat recovery potential from the molten slag. At the same time, the investigation provides accurate results of the maximum energy that can be recovered from the slag if the proposed technology is implemented (around 306 kWht per casting, what represents the 6.3% of the total available energy). The work is completed with a preliminary techno-economic analysis to conclude with the viability assessment. This analysis shows a depreciated payback period of the proposed technology below 7 years.

Extensive research on G1 biarcs fitting to free-form curves (i.e., Bezier, B-spline, and NURBS curves) has been conducted in the past decades for various purposes, including CNC contouring to make smooth, accurate profile features such as pockets, islands, and sides. However, all the proposed approaches only focused on the approximation errors and the biarc number, not on the radius of the individual fitting arc; so it could be smaller than the cutting tool, which would cause gouging during machining. This work, based on the tool radius pre-determined by the minimum size of the concavities of the design profile, proposes a new approach to approximating the profile with a G1 biarc curve in order to make smooth, accurate, and non-gouged profile features using CNC contouring. The significant new contribution of this work is a new mechanism that ensures all the concave arcs of the fitting curve are larger than the pre-determined tool and the fitting errors meet the specified tolerance. This approach can promote the use of G1 biarc tool paths in the manufacturing industry to make high precision profile features.

Abstract:
A combined theoretical and experimental analysis of thermoacoustic interaction mechanisms of a lean pre-mixed swirl-stabilized gas turbine burner is presented. A full-scale gas turbine burner has been tested in an atmospheric test rig. The test facility was equipped with loudspeakers to excite the acoustic field and with arrays of microphones to measure the response of the acoustic field to the forcing signal. With this set-up transfer matrices relating the acoustic pressure and velocity on both sides of the flame front have been measured. A laser absorption measurement technique allowed for measurement of the fluctuations of fuel concentration in the mixture. Heat release fluctuations were monitored using a photo-multiplier. The measurement of the acoustic field, heat release and equivalence ratio fluctuations have been measured simultaneously. Special attention has been given to the role of fuel concentration fluctuations in the thermoacoustic interaction mechanism. In order to be able to clearly separate this mechanism from other possible mechanisms, all the experiments have been performed in pre-premixing mode as well. In pre-premixing mode the fuel is injected far upstream of the burner in order to avoid fuel concentration fluctuations at the burner location. This is in contrast with premixing mode where fuel and air are mixed in the burner. An acoustic flame model has been derived. The model includes the well-known interaction mechanism of equivalence ratio fluctuations but also includes a novel mechanism that is caused by fluctuations of vorticity. This latter mechanism relates the turbulent flame speed via turbulence intensity fluctuations to the acoustic field. The idea is that periodic acoustic fluctuations cause periodic changes of the turbulence intensity. The turbulence intensity strongly affects the turbulence flame speed. The fluctuations of the turbulent flame speed result in fluctuations of the heat release. This turbulence intensity fluctuation model has been compared with the measured pre-premix transfer functions and shows an excellent agreement. The measured transfer functions in premix mode have been compared with the model that includes fluctuations of fuel concentration and turbulence intensity. Also in this case a very good agreement is found. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the phase relation between measured equivalence ratio fluctuation and heat release corresponds to the model.

Abstract:
The design of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators typically compromises between force and stroke, the two properties being hard to achieve simultaneously. This paper presents a bow-like compliant SMA actuator aimed at improving the performance on both sides. Conceptually, the actuator is formed by two straight elastic beams hinged at the ends with an SMA wire pre-stretched in between. Heating of the alloy shortens the wire, which in turn makes the beams to buckle outward in a symmetric double-arched configuration. The transverse displacement of the beams amplifies the contraction of the wire while producing a favourable output force. The paper develops a simple, though accurate, analytical model of the actuator upon which a step-by-step design procedure is built. The numerical results for a case study are compared with the outcome of a finite element simulation.

Abstract:
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) degradation due to corrosion is one of the commonly observed failure types in land-based gas turbines due to the usage of low grade fuels. Sulfur in its gaseous form, as SO2, can attack the TBC system and result in the degradation of both the coating and the turbine component. The present study aims to understand the difference in the corrosion induced damage caused by SO2 gas mixture in different coating architectures. Corrosion tests were conducted at 780 °C in a tube furnace for a period of 168h. The inlet test gas had a composition of 1SO2-0.1CO-20CO2-N2 (bal.) in vol. %. The coating architectures consisted of 1) an overlay coating, 2) a single-side bond coat TBC, 3) an all-side bond coat TBC, 4) an all-side bond coat TBC subjected to pre-oxidation prior to the corrosion tests. The results from the corrosion tests showed that the damage was the most severe for the overlay followed by single-side bond coat TBC. Between the other two systems, the TBC subjected to pre-oxidation had relatively lower corrosion damage. The corrosion damage started from the edges for the overlay and single-side bond coat TBC and as well as through the penetration of the gas through the coating. For the coatings with bond coat on all sides, the edge damage appeared to be considerably reduced and the damage is predominantly through the gas infiltration.

Abstract:
With the aim to investigate the influence of strain hardening on the stainless steels susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking, tests were conducted in PWR environment on CT specimens, taken from a 316L stainless steel sheet cold rolled to 40% in thickness reduction. The initial cracks obtained by the fatigue pre-cracking have an atypical ‘V’ shape with smaller propagation in the center of the CT thickness compared to nominal propagation observed at both sides. The initial explanation was to consider a stress intensity factor derived from classical reference solution on the basis of a straight crack front, and considering the local value of the crack depth in the equation. This assumption raised several problems analsyes in this paper. This particular shape of the initial defect may be related to several factors, and partly to the 40% cold rolling. It is likely that the hardening is not uniform, with a higher rate at the specimen sides than in the central area. In addition, significant residual stresses due to the gradient of mechanical properties are observed. Due to the high rate of work hardening by rolling of the sheet metal, a gradient of the mechanical properties through the thickness was determined, and the residual stresses profile induced by this process was measured. The variations obtained are consistent with each other: the material is more hardened in the vicinity of specimen surface and residual stresses are compressive in nature in the central part of the specimen and of tensile type on the flanks. All these data were firstly considered in order to assess their role regarding the particular form of the initial crack front obtained after fatigue: the 3D finite element calculations taking into account the true shape of the crack front demonstrate the relationship between the characteristics of the experimental crack front obtained after fatigue pre-cracking and the residual stresses. Moreover, from the residual stresses measured on the plate where samples have been machined/prepared, the residual stresses field in the specimen after its machining is calculated and then taken into account in the mechanical analysis. The characteristics of this field in addition to the mechanical loading applied during SCC testing can explain the crack propagation behavior observed experimentally.
