Abstract:
AbstractObjectives:This study aimed to radiologically evaluate the influence of inflammatory changes in frontal recess cells on frontal sinusitis. Methods:A total of 93 patients (186 sides) who underwent primary sinonasal surgery at Hyogo College of Medicine were enrolled in 2015 and 2016. Opacification of agger nasi, fronto-ethmoidal, ethmoid bulla, suprabullar and frontal bulla cells was determined by pre-operative computed tomography and its influence on frontal sinusitis was investigated. Results:In all, 42 per cent of 186 sides were affected by frontal sinusitis. Agger nasi, ethmoid bulla, fronto-ethmoidal, suprabullar and frontal bulla cells were identified in 99 per cent, 100 per cent, 38 per cent, 69 per cent, and 16 per cent of sides, respectively. The presence of frontal recess cells and frontal ostium size did not significantly influence frontal sinusitis development. However, opacification of agger nasi, type 1 fronto-ethmoidal and suprabullar cells significantly influenced frontal sinusitis development. Conclusion:Frontal sinusitis is caused by inflammatory changes in frontal recess cells.

Abstract:
The article again raises the question of the concept of proof in criminal proceedings. The adoption of the Code of Criminal Procedure in 2001, based on principles different from those of earlier times, did not lead to any noticeable revision of the postulates of the theory of evidence, including the concept of proof, but further aggravated the long-known contradictions. The incompatibility of the ideas of proving, which developed in the previous period of our history, as a cognitive activity aimed at establishing objective truth, with the principles of the presumption of innocence and competition is far from obvious to everyone, so the author of the article attempts to separate two fundamentally different approaches to the concept of proof between two fundamentally different parts of the criminal process and thereby reconcile the irreconcilable sides of the scientific discussion.

Lately, despite successful interaction between Russia and the USA on a number of issues, both in Moscow and across the pond a discussion on the bilateral relations perspectives is launched increasingly. Serious questions of the mutual trust level arise. The toughening of rhetoric and demonstrative political actions is evident from both sides. Obviously, the outlined regressive trend has pre-elective nature. However, in prospect, the situation can take on its internal development logic. The author examines the possible roadmap of Russia-U.S. cooperation continuance, in particular touches the question of the "restart" fortune.

Abstract:
Qalandars have often been depicted in negative terms in medieval and pre-modern literature by Sufis themselves, clerics and historians. Treatises composed by Qalandars are rare, thus the possibility of producing a balanced survey of their form of Sufism and contribution to the socio-political and religious climate of any given period is difficult. One such text, the “Sulīmān Qalandar Nāma”, however, completed in 1668, offers an intriguing perspective of Qalandars in late Safavid Iran. An analysis of this text, along with a focus on the dynamics of late Safavid religion and politics suggests that far from being antinomian and otherworldly Sufis, these Qalandars were supportive of the Shīʿa Safavid dynasty. The text offers an interesting marriage between traditional Qalandar themes and those inspired by Shīʿa Islam, and it testifies to the continuing importance of the Qalandars, providing evidence for the cultural continuity of this form of Sufism in the region.

Abstract:
Both camps made extensive use of social media during the referendum, both to mobilise existing supporters and to convert new ones. However, the three main groups—Stronger In, Vote Leave and Leave.EU—each took differing strategies within this. Drawing on tweets published by the groups, the article compares the use of different positive and negative frames, as well as the thematic content. While reinforcing other work that shows differentials in focus on specific themes—economics for Stronger In, politics and immigration for the Leave groups—the analysis also highlights the use on both sides of ‘sticks’ (capitalisation on the other side’s errors) and ‘stones’ (new issues and framings that the group brings to the debate). If the latter constituted the pre-game plan, then the former became a substantial part of the practical application during the campaign, a development reinforced by the nature of the medium itself.

Abstract:
Taking sides is one of the reactions available to third parties in handling a dispute. From the perspective of individual differences, this study was aimed at identifying lay third parties’ motives for side taking and exploring their relations with the Big Five personality traits. We tested our assumptions using three samples: A Dutch student sample ( n = 111), a Dutch employee sample ( n = 101) and a Chinese student sample ( n = 124). The findings revealed four types of side–taking motives: Moral, relational, reward–approaching and sanction–avoiding motives. The results also showed that individuals’ personality traits were relevant to the four types of side–taking motives: Agreeableness was associated with the relational motive for side taking, and intellectual autonomy was associated with the reward–approaching motive, the sanction–avoiding motive and the relational motive for side taking. Implications and explanations of these findings are discussed. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective:To establish normative dimensions for the depth of the olfactory fossa, the length and angulation of the lateral lamella of the cribriform plate, and the height of the ethmoid roof, in adult males and females.Design:The study assessed 300 high resolution, multislice computed tomography scans of the paranasal sinuses, which were evaluated using Merge Efilm software (version 2.0.0, build 37).Results:According to the original Keros classification, the type II olfactory fossa was the commonest type in men (66.7 per cent), while the type I fossa was commonest in women (53 per cent). A difference of 3 mm or more between the depths of the right and left olfactory fossae was present in 11 per cent of men and 2 per cent of women. The lateral lamella of the cribriform plate was significantly shorter and less oblique in men than in women. The length of the lateral lamella was greater anteriorly than posteriorly in both sexes. There was a statistically significant difference between the angle of the lateral lamellae, comparing right and left sides. The ethmoid roof was lower in women than men. Conclusion:The observed differences between men and women and between the right and left sides are of surgical importance, and should alert surgeons to the need for thorough, systematic pre-operative evaluation of computed tomography scans.

Abstract:
The prudence of partial or complete middle turbinate resection during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is controversial. The greatest concern regarding partial resection relates to the effect on the frontal recess and the development of frontal sinus disease. The purpose of this study was to radiographically evaluate the frontal sinus in patients who had undergone ESS with partial conservative middle turbinate resection. We reviewed the charts and operative records from 195 consecutive cases of ESS performed by a single surgeon (JFB) over a two-year period. Thirty-three of 117 patients who had undergone ESS with conservative partial middle turbinate resection without frontal recess exploration agreed to return for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of their sinuses. The preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans and postoperative MR images were reviewed and graded (1–3) by a single neuroradiologist. Significant frontal sinus disease (grades 2 and 3) was seen in 15 of 52 sides preoperatively (29%), and in 14 sides postoperatively (27%). During the postoperative MRI studies, only six frontal sinus sides demonstrated minimal mucosal thickening (grade 1) which had not been apparent on preoperative CT. This radiographic analysis suggests that conservative partial middle turbinate resection during ESS does not adversely affect the frontal sinus. We believe that the surgical technique employed when resecting the middle turbinate, and the avoidance of unnecessary dissection in the recess are both important factors in preventing the development of frontal sinus disease following ESS.

Abstract:
The Harmer—Henry pension and tax review resulted in an increase in the common value of the single rate of Age Pension and Disability Support Pension from 25 per cent to 28 per cent of male total average weekly earnings. It also recommended a Resource Super Profits Tax that would have initially taxed mining ‘rents' at 36 per cent, on top of the pre-existing 30 per cent federal taxonprofits. These recommendations represent two sides of the same coin: higher federal spending alongside higher federal taxes. The pension rise is likely to reduce participation in the labour force. The proposed tax rise would discourage mining activity as miners considered their options to delay or abandon projects. There is a lot to like at the level of detail in the Harmer—Henry package, but future efforts to reform our tax-transfer system should focus on promoting saving and investment, including investment in human capital.

Abstract:
Objectives: Recent studies have shown that the spiral computed tomography (CT) scan is a sensitive imaging modality for predicting neoplastic invasion of thyroid cartilage. The objectives of our study were: to assess the accuracy of pre-operative spiral CT in predicting thyroid cartilage involvement in patients with carcinoma of the larynx; and to elucidate the factors that would accurately indicate cartilage involvement.Material and methods: Medical records, including spiral CT scans and pathological reports, were reviewed for 27 patients who had undergone laryngectomy in two major hospitals in south Wales. A consultant radiologist with special interest in cross-sectional imaging re-evaluated the scans to assess neoplastic involvement of the thyroid cartilage, based on definite, objective criteria. These criteria included: soft tissue asymmetry; loss of medullary space; spiky or irregular surface; distortion of cartilage framework; and abnormal soft tissue on both sides of the cartilage. The radiological findings were then correlated with the histopathological evidence of cartilage invasion by the tumour. Results: Out of the 27 cases, 15 had evidence of histological invasion of thyroid cartilage. The most specific criterion to predict thyroid cartilage involvement was the presence of tumour on both sides of the cartilage (specificity of 91 per cent, sensitivity of 66 per cent). Combining two criteria increased both the sensitivity and the specificity to 86 and 91 per cent, respectively.

Abstract:
The ‘productivity puzzle’ – the substantial drop in productivity in the UK since the onset of the financial crisis in 2008 – has exercised economists and policymakers alike. The loss in productivity levels, mainly output per hour, should have been restored by now and the trend growth should have been recovered, or even exceeded. Instead after a very sharp fall, much faster than many of our competitors, it has only recently started to rise again, but at a stubbornly slow rate and at the time of writing stood some 2 per cent below its pre-recession levels. So although we are likely to get back to where we were pretty soon, it is possible that the gap, with where we should have been on pre-recession trends, continues. The Bank of England calculates this gap could stay as high as 16 per cent or even widen if the rate of productivity increase does not return to normal. This is bad for the economy and especially bad for innovation, investment, growth and competitiveness. This paper examines possible explanations and offers some possible answers. It sides, in the end, more with those that argue that demand deficiency looks like being at least a part of the explanation, but acknowledges that changes in the structure and destination of employment, since the recession started, have also played a role.

Abstract:
Personality is among the most important factors contributing to individual differences in identity formation. However, previous studies mainly focused on broad personality domains and neglected more specific facets. In addition, it has only recently been recognized that identity formation is guided by multiple types of commitment and exploration. The present study aimed to remedy these limitations by relating the 30 personality facets of the NEO–PI–3 to five identity dimensions. In general, identity formation was especially facilitated by high levels of Conscientiousness and, to a lesser extent, also by high levels of Extraversion and low levels of Neuroticism. Openness and Agreeableness predicted greater involvement in both the positive side (i.e. exploration in breadth and depth) and negative side (i.e. ruminative exploration) of the exploration process. Personality facets and their overarching domains, as well as facets underlying the same domain, were often differentially associated with identity dimensions. Additionally, we found that some personality facets both have bright and dark sides, as they predicted both proactive identity work and a weakened sense of identity. Overall, the present study underscores the utility of multidimensional models of identity formation and points to the benefits of considering personality facets in addition to broad domains. By exploring language as custodian ofprehistory, this paper makes a linguistic contribution to the continuing debate aboutwhich predates the other between Ife (Yoruboid) and Bini (Edoid) of southwesternNigeria. It pieces together evidence of cognate lexical simplification, patterns ofcognate counting systems, sound inventory, and decadence of vowel harmony, whichsupport the chronological pre-eminence of Edoid over Yoruboid; thus, calling forarchaeological, anthropological and geographical inspection.

Abstract:
This study reports on the application of the principles of the lexical approach to a non‐Indo‐European language, namely Hungarian. This language is a Uralic island surrounded on all sides by Indo‐European languages. In addition, the Hungarians are, in terms of cultural features, Europeans. These conditions provide a great opportunity for a crucial test case of the lexical approach to personality. Study 1 reports on the different phases of the selection of the trait terms from the Hungarian lexicon, a categorization into kinds of personality‐relevant terms, a comparison of the category findings with those of other languages, and on indices of relevance of the personality terms. Of the total number of 8738 personality‐relevant terms, 3914 adjectives were used for Study 2. In that study, personality descriptiveness ratings were obtained from a group of judges (N = 5). On the basis of these ratings, a manageable set of 624 adjectives was selected for a rating task. Four hundred subjects provided self‐ratings on the 624 adjectives. On the basis of the means and standard deviations of the ratings, the set of 624 was further reduced to 561 adjectives. On ipsatized data, principal components analyses were performed. Both a four‐factor solution and a five‐factor solution, which were Varimax‐rotated, are presented. The correspondence of these factors to the traditional Big Five factors is discussed.

Abstract:
With a series of buffer tank, activated pre-clarifier (SBR) and planted soil filters, it is possible to get a stable degradation and good effluent values in the case of unsteady inflow and changing concentrations. In the process presented here the activated pre-clarifier is working as a denitrification tank and the soil filter as a nitrification reactor. An automatic control manages the storm-water runoff, the water-recirculation returns the nitrate and provides a minimal feed. Experiences with this plant from 1999 to 2005 are given in this paper, research has been done in the project “Planted soil filters as a Biotechnological Process”, founded by the German Federal Environment Foundation (DBU). A full scale pilot plant was built to treat wastewater from composting sides, with a 42 m3 SBR and a bed area of 2 × 550 m2 of the planted soil filters. Now, after six years of operation, the results are still satisfactory. Besides this pilot plant, landfill leakage and municipal wastewater have been treated in a technical scale plant with the same process in an 80 L SBR and 0.75 m2 vertical flow soil filter with good results.

Abstract:
The present essay offers a fresh contribution to the long-standing debate regarding the nature of the resurrection of Christ within the pre-Pauline formula of 1 Cor 15.3–5. The article first provides an analysis of the current state of the discussion, offering new observations and lines of evidence which suggest that a number of common arguments on both sides of the debate are lacking or inconclusive. The essay then offers a new proposal regarding the verb used within the formula for the resurrection event. The article presents previously neglected evidence significant for the debate regarding Jesus' resurrection within this primitive confession.

Here, we characterize an energy-state-sensitive glutamate circuit from the ventromedial hypothalamus to anorexigenic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons that responds to changes in energy state at both sides of the synapse, providing novel information about how variations in metabolic state affect excitatory drive onto POMC cells.

There are following pre-conditions for the beginning of the reconciliation process among sides which were in conflict: establishment of clear political solutions, prosecution of the war criminals and financial compensation for war victims. Important conditions for that are: that sides in conflict reached the level at which motives for prolonging the conflict are irrelevant or significantly weakened; the existence of earlier phases of trust, which can be rebuild; the existence of symmetry among sides in the conflict, which enables that they act as equal partners in negotiations and in the process of reconciliation. .

Abstract:
To better understand the evolution of crack propagation in brittle rock mass, the particle velocity field evolution on both sides of secondary crack in rock-like materials (cement mortar specimens) with pre-existing parallel double flaws under uniaxial compression is analyzed based on the discrete element theory. By bringing in strain rate tensor, a new technique is proposed for quantifying the failure mechanism of cracks to distinguish the types and mechanical behaviors of secondary cracks between pre-existing parallel flaws. The research results show that the types and mechanical behaviors of secondary cracks are distinct at different axial loading stages and can be directly identified and captured through the presented approach. The relative motion trend between particles determines the types and mechanical behaviors of secondary cracks. Based on particles movement on both sides of secondary cracks between cracks, the velocity fields of particles can be divided into four types to further analyze the causes of different types of cracks. In different axial loading stages, the velocity field types of particles on both sides of cracks are continuously evolving. According to the particle velocity field analysis and the proposed novel way, the types of macroscopic cracks are not directly determined by the types of dominated micro-cracks. Under uniaxial compression, the particles between secondary cracks and pre-existing parallel flaws form a confined compressive member. Under the confinement of lateral particles, secondary cracks appear as shear cracks between pre-existing parallel flaws at the beginning stage of crack initiation.

Abstract:
Abstract Potentiality plays an important role in bioethical debates concerning embryos and fetuses. In these debates, “conservatives” tend to attribute ethical significance to an organism’s potential for human life, whereas “liberals” are likely to deny both the logical coherence of the concept and its ethical significance. Whether favorable or critical, both sides of the debate have had in mind a very specific sense of potentiality, namely, natural potentiality, a pre-given telos awaiting to unfold. This Article argues that an equally important and novel sense of potentiality is at play in these cases, namely, techno-potentiality, a power that medical technology extracts from the organism and holds in-reserve for future use. Examining three bioethical debates, brain-death pregnancy, fetus viability, and pre-implanted embryos, the Article demonstrates the importance of techno-potentiality for understanding how these debates have come about. Understanding the emergence of a new kind of potentiality is as ethically significance as is resolving the bioethical dilemmas to which it gives rise.

Abstract:
The upper bound power method is used to simulate the process of combined radial-backward-forward extrusion of hollow parts of the "cup with flange and branch pieces" type from a continuous workpiece. The calculation scheme with autonomous deformation zones is used, which contains modules with an inclined boundary and the condition for the equality of powers acting on both sides of the intermediate hard zone is accepted. This made it possible to more accurately determine the power regime and the prevailing direction of the metal flow, which is necessary to assess the character of the forming of the part. The comparison of theoretical and experimental values of the deformation pressures and the flow velocities with each other, as well as with the results obtained by the finite element method shows the feasibility of using the obtained functions for technological calculations of power parameters and evaluating of part forming.

Abstract:
Each half of the medulla contains respiratory neurons that constitute two generators that control respiratory rhythm. One generator consists of the inspiratory neurons in the pre-Bötzinger complex (preBötC); the other, the pre-inspiratory (Pre-I) neurons in the parafacial respiratory group (pFRG), rostral to the preBötC. We investigated the contribution of the commissural fibers, connecting the respiratory rhythm generators located on the opposite side of the medulla to the generation of respiratory activity in brain stem-spinal cord preparation from 0- to 1-day-old rats. Pre-I neuron activity and the facial nerve and/or first lumbar (L1) root activity were recorded as indicators of the pFRG-driven rhythm. Fourth cervical ventral root (C4) root and/or hypoglossal (XII) nerve activity were recorded as indicators of preBötC-driven inspiratory activity. We found that a midline section that interrupted crossed fibers rostral to the obex irreversibly eliminated C4 and XII root activity, whereas the Pre-I neurons, facial nerve, and L1 roots remained rhythmically active. The facial and contralateral L1 nerve activities were synchronous, whereas right and left facial (and right and left L1) nerves lost synchrony. Optical recordings demonstrated that pFRG-driven burst activity was preserved after a midline section, whereas the preBötC neurons were no longer rhythmic. We conclude that in newborn rats, crossed excitatory interactions (via commissural fibers) are necessary for the generation of inspiratory bursts but not for the generation of rhythmic Pre-I neuron activity.

AbstractBackground:Pre-operative radiological identification of facial nerve anomalies can help prevent intra-operative facial nerve injury during cochlear implantation. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and configuration of facial nerve anomalies and their concurrence with inner-ear anomalies in cochlear implant candidates.Methods:Inner-ear and concomitant facial nerve anomalies were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and temporal high-resolution computed tomography in 48 children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss who were cochlear implant candidates.Results:Inner-ear anomalies were present in 11 out of 48 patients (23 per cent) and concomitant facial nerve anomalies were present on 7 sides in 4 patients (7 per cent of the total). Facial nerve anomalies were accompanied by cochlear or vestibular malformation. Conclusion:Potential facial nerve abnormalities should always be considered in patients with inner-ear anomalies. Pre-operative facial nerve imaging can increase the surgeon's confidence to plan and perform cochlear implantation. Magnetic resonance imaging should be used to detect inner-ear anomalies; if these are identified, temporal high-resolution computed tomography should be used to evaluate the facial nerve.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the execution of the laws of the 3rd Plenum of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (KC PZPR) (11–13 November 1949) in terms of verifying its members on the example of Julian Sekita (1897–1989) – a lawyer with pre–war experience in the judiciary – the first President of Regional Court in Olsztyn in the years 1945–1949. From the viewpoint of particular Party members or candidates that were affected by the cleansing of ranks, both the content of the accusations and the mechanism of deciding on their exclusion were crucial. Depriving someone of the Party card while the totalitarian state was being built often meant losing their professional standing and actual elimination from the broadly understood public sphere. In practice, it led to defensive mechanisms among the excluded, such as appeals to Party instances directly superior to the basic organisations. Eventually, the decisions on approving, changing or repealing the punishments belonged to voivodeship–level Party control committees. It was a crucial issue, especially for those Party members who faced charges of ideological nature that situated them in the category of class enemies.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Base pairing between U2 snRNA and the branchpoint sequence (BPS) is essential for pre-mRNA splicing. Because the metazoan BPS is short and highly degenerate, this interaction alone is insufficient for specific binding of U2 snRNP. The splicing factor U2AF binds to the pyrimidine tract at the 3′ splice site in the earliest spliceosomal complex, E, and is essential for U2 snRNP binding in the spliceosomal complex A. We show that the U2 snRNP protein SAP 155 UV cross-links to pre-mRNA on both sides of the BPS in the A complex. SAP 155’s downstream cross-linking site is immediately adjacent to the U2AF binding site, and the two proteins interact directly in protein-protein interaction assays. Using UV cross-linking, together with functional analyses of pre-mRNAs containing duplicated BPSs, we show a direct correlation between BPS selection and UV cross-linking of SAP 155 on both sides of the BPS. Together, our data are consistent with a model in which U2AF binds to the pyrimidine tract in the E complex and then interacts with SAP 155 to recruit U2 snRNP to the BPS.

Abstract:
Response inhibition refers to the suppression of actions that are inappropriate in a given context and that interfere with goal-driven behavior. Studies using a range of methodological approaches have implicated executive control processes mediated by frontal-subcortical circuits as being critical to response inhibition; however, localization within the frontal lobe has been inconsistent. In this review, we present evidence from behavioral, lesion, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and neurological population studies. The findings lay the foundation for a construct in which response inhibition is akin to response selection, such that pre-SMA circuits are critical to selection of appropriate behavior, including both selecting to engage appropriate motor responses and selecting to withhold (inhibit) inappropriate motor responses. Recruitment of additional prefrontal and posterior cortical circuits, necessary to guide response selection, varies depending on the cognitive and behavioral demands of the task.

AbstractWhite surface encrustations developing on basalt which had the same ‘reflectance signature’ on digital Landsat imagery as that from the limestone terrain in the Tripolitanian pre-desert are shown at the Wadi Gobbeen to be the thalli of the crustose lichen of the genus Aspicilia. The reproductive structures and ascospores of the lichen are described. The lichen is seen to be aiding the weathering and disintegration of the basalt cobbles. The absence of the thalli on the sides and underneath of cobbles currently resting upon the present land surface may suggest that soil erosion has been rapid in the recent past.

Abstract:
Almost since the discovery of long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus, its locus of expression has been debated. Throughout the years, convincing evidence has accumulated to suggest that LTP can be supported either presynaptically, by an increase in transmitter release, or postsynaptically, by an increase in α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor number. However, whereas postsynaptic enhancement appears to be consistently obtained across studies following LTP induction, presynaptic enhancement is not as reliably observed. Such discrepancies, along with the failure to convincingly identify a retrograde messenger required for presynaptic change, have led to the general view that LTP is mainly supported postsynaptically, and certainly, research within the field for the past decade has been heavily focused on the postsynaptic locus. Here, we argue that LTP can be expressed at either synaptic locus, but that pre- and postsynaptic forms of LTP are dissociable phenomena mediated by distinct mechanistic processes, which are sensitive to different patterns of neuronal activity. This view of LTP helps to reconcile discrepancies across the literature and may put to rest a decades-long debate.

Abstract:
This study evaluated effects of high pre-rigor temperature and duration and suspension of lamb sides on quality traits and protein denaturation in two muscles [semimembranosus (SM) and longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL)]. Twenty-four lamb carcasses, within each of 3 slaughter days, were used to assign eight carcasses to one of four pre-rigor temperature treatments: chilled at 2°C directly after slaughter, or held at 37°C in water for 1.5, 3.0 or 4.5 h before transfer to a 2°C chiller. At ~15 min post slaughter, one side of each carcass was suspended from the Achilles tendon, whereas the other side was suspended by the aitch bone and the leg tied down to the ribs. The sides subjected to aitch bone hanging had an increased sarcomere length in the SM, but decreased sarcomere length in the LTL. For the LTL, the time of exposure to high pre-rigor temperature had a significant effect on measures of protein denaturation and related meat quality traits such as purge and colour, although tenderness (shear force) after 2 days of aging was not affected. For the SM, the high temperature treatment also resulted in increase in measures of protein denaturation and thus negatively influenced meat quality traits such as purge, colour and shear force after aging. However, these effects on purge and shear force in the SM were significantly mitigated by the aitchbone hanging treatment. The results of the present experiment indicate that pre-rigor aitchbone hanging of muscles can counteract the negative effects of high pre-rigor temperature on both water loss and meat tenderness.

Abstract:
Background: Fluoroscopic guided percutaneous interventional spine procedures are increasingly performed in recent years as they have been shown to be target specific and enhance patient safety. However, ionizing radiation has been associated with stochastic effects such as cancer and genetic defects as well as deterministic effects such as cataracts, erythema, epilation, and even death. These are dose related, and hence, measures should be taken to minimize radiation exposure to patients and health care personnel to reduce these adverse effects. Objective: A risk reduction project was completed with the goal of reducing effective doses to the staff and patients in a university-based spinal interventional practice. Effective dose reduction to the staff and patients was hypothesized to occur with technique and equipment changes in the procedure suite. The goal of this study was to quantify effective dose rates to staff before and after interventions. Study Design: Retrospective study comparing descriptive data of effective dose to the health care staff before and after implementation of a combination of technique and equipment changes. Methods: Technique changes from pre to post intervention period included continuous needle advancement under continuous fluoroscopic controlled by the interventional physician to intermittent needle advancement under pulsed fluoroscopic controlled by the radiology technician. Equipment changes included circumferential lead drape skirt around the procedure table and use of mobile transparent lead barriers on both sides of the procedure table. Effective dose exposure measured in Millirem (mrem) from the radiation dosimetry badges for pre-intervention (February 2009 through June 2009) and post-intervention (November 2009 through March 2010) periods were examined through monthly radiation dosimetry reports for the fluoroscopy suite staff. Results: A total of 685 interventional procedures were performed in the pre-intervention period and 385 in the post-intervention period. The median cumulative mrem (interquartile range) for all staff combined in the pre-intervention period was 71 (28,75) and post-intervention period was 1 (0,3). The median mrem per procedure was significantly higher in the pre-intervention group 0.46 (0.36, 0.54) compared to post-intervention 0.01 (0.0.03); P < 0.01. The percentage reduction in overall effective dose per procedure to all staff was 97.3%. Limitations: Observational study, multiple radiation reduction interventions confound the individual effects of each intervention’s effective dose Conclusions: Spinal injection technique and equipment changes in the procedure suite significantly reduced the rate of effective dose to the clinical staff. Key words: Fluoroscopy, effective radiation dose, spine

Abstract:
Two new maldanid polychaetes were collected from the Ponta do Cabo Branco beach, Paraíba, Brazil, and represent the first record of the genus Nicomache for the southwest Atlantic. Nicomache (Nicomache) lanai sp. nov. has 22 setigerous segments, two pre-anal asetigerous segments, a dark beige colour on setigers 4–17, an anteriorly rounded prostomium forming a tall, arched keel, elliptical nuchal grooves that open posteriorly, 4–7 acicular spines on setigers 1–3, and an anal funnel with triangular equal-sized anal cirri, with concave sides. Nicomache (Nicomache) brasiliensis sp. nov. also has 22 setigerous and two pre-anal asetigerous segments, but the entire body is light-pink coloured. The prostomium is rounded anteriorly, but is longer, broadening posteriorly, forming a low, straight subterminal keel. This species has parallel nuchal grooves, with a sharp anterior angle, has only 4–6 acicular spines on setigers 1–3, and an anal funnel with short tapering, equal-sized anal cirri with convex sides.

Abstract:
1. The vibration-evoked startle response mediates rapid withdrawal in burrowed larval lampreys (ammocoetes). Ammocoetes withdraw in response to vibration by contracting pre-existing lateral bends in the trunk and tail, thus pulling their heads deeper into the burrow. 2. The motor effects of an ammocoete startle response are dependent on pre-existing posture. Areas of lateral body curvature contract more and exhibit larger electromyogram (EMG) amplitudes on their inner sides than on their outer sides. 3. Both of the anterior Mth and posterior Mth' (Mauthner) cells and both of the B1 and B2 (bulbar) Muller cells fired action potentials in response to vibration of the otic capsules. Both B3 and B4 Muller cells were inhibited by vibration, while M (mesencephalic) and I1 (isthmic) Muller cells were inhibited by ipsilateral vibration and excited by contralateral vibration. 4. Simultaneous action potentials in both of the anterior Mth cells were appropriate and sufficient for initiating the startle response EMG in a semi-intact preparation. 5. This study demonstrates a Mauthner-initiated startle response which activates musculature on both sides of the body to produce a rapid withdrawal movement and is thus adapted to the eel-like form and burrowed lifestyle of larval lampreys.
