Predator avoidance behaviors are a critical defense mechanism that can increase the chances of survival for potential prey species. The second predation cue was potential alarm cue derived from macerated conspecific amphipods from the same population as the test species. Arthropod predators often use prey and conspecific cues to make foraging decisions. To combat the ever-present threat of predation many species produce anti-predator vocalizations and behaviours (mobbing) designed to drive predators away. These vocalizations can encode a predator's threat level, and many species within a community will eavesdrop on this information. A basic underlying assumption of some optimal foraging models is that harder working individuals die earlier. A trade-off between foraging activity and longevity may have implications for colony growth, and ultimately for colony reproductive success. Optimality models make quantitative predictions about behaviour from analyses of costs and benefits.
