This chapter examines the idea that spoken language of mathematics could be a potential factor in explaining variation in mathematics achievement between East Asian and US students. A particular focus was placed on the number naming systems of East Asian languages that are rooted in ancient Chinese. In these languages, the organization of number names follows the rules of the base-ten system. Studies that examined influences of number naming systems on children’s mathematical competence showed that young children speaking East Asian languages prefer to represent two-digit numbers as consisting

Until 1800, Hegel held that religion takes primacy over philosophy. That commitment alters fundamentally with his first publications in Jena. The Difference essay (1801) and Faith and Knowledge (1802) hold the key to the genesis of his mature thought. Chapter 1 focuses on Hegel’s efforts to define the task of philosophy and thereby to shore up his new position. Hegel’s first system program, dedicated to a holistic conception of reality, is shaped by his understanding of three central concepts: the absolute, speculation, and the system. Here the influence of Jacobi and Spinoza is formative. Cri

The global spread of Islamic finance has transformed the financial systems of many Muslim countries, but observers know little about the factors that shape individuals’ demand for Islamic finance. This chapter examines the socioeconomic origins of consumer demand for Islamic financial products in Indonesia, where a growing Islamic financial market coexists with a large conventional financial system. Many analysts of Islamic finance presume that pious Muslims should prefer Islamic financial products to conventional ones. We explore how socioeconomic change may also create new constituencies for

Abstract:
In the Preface to his Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics (1783), Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) famously complained that common sense is the last refuge of the cynical and ambitious littérateur who, lacking any real aptitude for speculative thought, seeks to win over the public by consecrating their inherited prejudices. The aim of this chapter is to explain where and why Kant’s interpretation of Scottish common sense philosophy goes awry. The work of four early Scottish common-sensists is explored: Thomas Reid (1710–96), James Oswald (1703–93), James Beattie (1735–1803), and George Campbell (17

This chapter discusses the strengths and limitations of criminal law in controlling corruption. Some experts claim that criminal law misses the systemic nature of corruption, whereas others prefer prevention to prosecution. Regardless, there can be no question that prosecution of bribery is necessary. Various experiences with self-governing bodies have demonstrated that without the legal risk of prosecution self-regulation rarely works. The chapter asks questions such as: Who is a “foreign public official”? What about the perpetual “facilitation payments”? Are prosecutors and courts out of the

This chapter discusses how the European Court of Human Rights uses international instruments in its evolutive interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights. It is argued that the Court, in its use of such instruments, goes beyond the bounds of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties Article 31(3)(b) (subsequent practice) and (c) (systemic interpretation) and uses the instruments as guidance in giving effect to the original intention of the parties based on Article 31(1) (evolutive intention). However, this is not made clear in the Court’s reasoning. Moreover, the Court pr

Co-operative banks have become an important part of the national banking systems in Europe since their creation as member-based organizations in the middle of the nineteenth century. They act together with their central institution(s) within a federal structure. Today, as a result of the crisis of financial markets, European regulation tends to prefer the type of a banking corporation. Co-operative banks, Volksbanks as well as Raiffeisenbanks, and their federal structure seem to be put under pressure to transform and to merge. This chapter returns to the reason why people—in an ex ante situation—prefer to pay part of the healthcare costs ex post. This is simply because there is no welfare gain from insurance when the potential treatment expenditure is sufficiently low. The efficiency argument for co-insurance as a mechanism to reduce the welfare loss from insurance is illustrated using a standard model. Different patient payment systems are compared. A recurrent issue in policy debates over patient payments is their distributive implications. This inherent inequity problem is discussed, including a diagram showing t

Quantum physics is rapidly emerging as a transformative approach to expand the frontiers of technology in areas including communications, information processing, metrology, and sensing. Indeed, the end of Moore’s Law looms in the near future and quantum effects in modern electronics such as quantum tunneling are a limiting factor. In contrast, in new technology based on quantum behavior, the quantum properties represent a new dimension of opportunity. The public is more interested in agricultural and food issues than ever before, as is evident in the many agricultural controversies debated in the media. Why is it that some people embrace new agricultural technologies while others steadfastly defend traditional farming methods? Why do some prefer to buy food grown around the world while others patronize small, local farmers? In the debates about organic food, genetically modified organisms, and farm animal welfare, it is not always clear what the scientific literature actually says. To understand these controversies, the authors encourage re
