Full textMany papers analyze the impact of child gender on parental investment. Most of them underscore that, mainly in developing countries, parents do not equally treat their children due to their preferences. Inspired from the work of Barcellos et al. (2014), whose findings reveal that in India parents prefer boys to girls and allocate resources accordingly, this paper examines if this phenomenon is common practice among Haitian parents. Using data from the DHS 1994, the estimates suggest that, in Haiti, if the newborn is a boy he is 3.2 percent points more likely than a girl to be breastfed, but there is no such discrimination when using other dependent variables like immunizations or vitamin A. However, estimates from more recent data reveal that, in 2005, girls are 2.4 percent points more likely than boys to be breastfed. Furthermore, considering the children aged between 0 and 59 months for the same year (2005), the breastfeeding duration increases as much as 11.2% if the child is a girl. keywords: Investment, Haiti, child, gender, breastfeeding, mother, immunization, anthropometry, 1994, 2000, 2005.

Full textThis thesis is about the representation of women in New Delhi and their perceptions of themselves, as women and girls in Indian society. More specifically, the women interviewed talk about the image of "woman" in India, their positions and their roles in the family, as daughters, as wives and as mothers, but also studying the relations with others (women and men). With the aim to illuminate the phenomenon of sexual selection of the unborn child and discrimination based on gender, gender relations that can be affected by the practices and customs were analyzed. Specifically, it is through their discourse and their experiences that have enabled us to illustrate that women are agents of change and have the power to act on their lives.

Full textPerinatal period is sensitive for offspring as neurophysiology and circuitry underlying behaviors take place. This period includes formation of the sexual behavior circuitry. Perinatal period is also essential for pregnant or lactating females. Indeed, females undergo major physiological changes involved in maternal behaviors. Perinatal modifications are altered by several parameters like stress or chemicals, including endocrine disruptors. The aim of my thesis was to characterize the outcomes of a perinatal exposure to glyphosate, a widely use herbicide across the world. Maternal exposure during pregnancy and lactation to a low dose of glyphosate (5mg/kg bw/d corresponding to 1/10th of the NOAEL) highlighted that maternal behavior, hippocampal neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity were altered by glyphosate alone and in formulation. Maternal exposure also induced gut dysbiosis on the dams. We showed that glyphosate alone induced hypoactivity on males offspring. To a lesser extent, males sexual behavior and olfactory preference were altered after glyphosate exposure. There was no effect on hippocampal plasticity on males. Sexual behavior, locomotor activity and neuroplasticity were not impacted in female offspring after maternal exposure. Together, these results highlight for the first time effects on neurophysiology, maternal behaviors and maternal gut microbiota after low doses exposure of glyphosate alone or in formulation. Interestingly, only males offspring had behavioral outcomes. Our study was the first to investigated sexual behavior of female offspring and showed no effect of glyphosate on this parameter. Finally, our work is the first that showed differential effect between active compound and formulation in mammals

Full textMedical instances strongly control infant feeding. Then parental feeding practices are a means of observing medicalization of everyday life and diffusion of science-based practices. In order to explain the social determinants of parental feeding practices, two sets of data are used: a corpus of documents composed of scientific articles, publications aimed at parents and conversations held on an online forum that concerns childcare and, on the other hand, the French longitudinal study from childhood. This study gathers information on 18300 infants. The study broaches questions of infant development, health and feeding. It also gives details on parents’ socio-demographic characteristics. The first part of this thesis is confined to conditions of production and diffusion of medical recommendations concerning infant feeding. We demonstrate that, firstly the struggle for the monopoly on scientific authority within the field of research in pediatric nutrition and secondly the specific demands of public authorities and industries transferred to experts of infant nutrition, reveals the uncertainty and the variations of the medical recommendations concerning infant nutrition. Parents receptiveness of those medical recommendations can take the form of an appropriation of the mainstream recommendations, an assimilation of minor recommendations considered as the most up to date, or a distancing, sometimes very critical, of the medical recommendations, or even more the resistance to the very idea of medicalised parental practices. The second part shows that the conformity to medical recommendations of infant feeding is a product of the interaction between mothers’ education levels and the conditions of their socialisation to maternity (in particular their methods of researching information on complementary feeding). Therefore, the receptiveness of medicalised childcare appears to be dependent as on the relationship between the parents and medicine, as an abstract system, as on the relationship between parents and representatives of that system. These relationships are a product of the educational experience of the parents. In the third part, we demonstrate that the mother’s feeding repertoires have a proper effect, and an effect conditioned by parents' social characteristics, on infant feeding during their first year

Full textChildhood overweight is a fast growing and worrisome problem. The role of parents in this situation is of great importance as they ensure food availability, chose the presented meals, act as role models in the feeding act and interact with children during feeding to guide their eating behavior. The parent offers and molds the environment in which the child will evolve. This thesis explores the mother's role within this environment. The parent uses various feeding practices to guide the child's food choices. Some are kind, such as positively encouraging the child to taste new foods, (e.g., give this a taste, I think it's delicious!) while others are coercive (e.g., you are not leaving from this table until you finish your plate). Parent-child interactions during mealtime are likely to have different consequences on the child's eating habits, possibly modifying his food intake, food preferences, neophobia and weight status. Parent-child interactions can also influence a child's eating behavior without necessarily being within a food setting. The main objective of this thesis is to explore the relationship between the general parent-child interactions, also known as the parenting style, the parent-child interactions in a food setting, known as the feeding style, the feeding strategies used by the parents to guide the child's food choices, known as the feeding practices, the child's eating behavior and his weight status. This thesis has 4 specific objectives. First, to examine the relationship between the parenting style, the feeding style and the feeding practices. Second, to study the relationship between the feeding style, the child's eating behavior (food preferences and consumption frequency) and his weight status. Thirdly, to evaluate the existence of a relationship between the feeding practices and the child's eating behavior. Finally, to explore relations between mother’s attitudes toward her weight and her child’s weight and neophobic behavior. One hundred twenty-two mothers of preschoolers aged 3 to 5, were recruited by daycare centers on the island of Montreal and completed and auto-administered questionnaire on parenting style, feeding style, feeding practices, child consumption frequency, child preference for certain foods and food groups, child neophobia, child weight and height, the mother's diet, the mother's perception of the child's weight, the mother's concern regarding the child's weight and a description of the family profile. Parenting styles, feeding style and feeding practices display correlations among themselves. The feeding styles, more precisely the two scales that describe them (demandingness and sensibility), show correlations with the consumption and preference for certain foods. Differences were also noted between various feeding styles and child weight status and certain eating behaviors. The following thesis suggests that three concepts are implicated in the feeding dynamic of the mother-child dyad; the parenting style, the feeding style and the feeding practices. It is suggested that the feeding style and food prerefences are correlated. Future research in this field will need to evaluate the relative impact of feeding practices, parenting styles and feeding styles on eating behavior (consumption and preferences) and child weight. An effective intervention seeking to change eating behavior among families will need to address parent feeding practices as well as parenting style and feeding style.
