Analogues of brassinolide and castasterone, containing an ester functionality with four carbon atoms in the position 20 of the pregnane skeleton, have been prepared. In the bean second internode assay the most effective compounds were (20R)-2α,3α,20-trihydroxy-5α-pregnan-6-one 20-isobutyrate (6d) and (20R)-2α,3α,20-trihydroxy-B-homo-7-oxa-5α-pregnan-6-one 20-isobutyrate (7d). On the other hand, (20R)-2α,3α,20-trihydroxy-B-homo-6-oxa-5α-pregnan-7-one 20-heptafluorobutyrate (8) was the first compound with the retarding effect in the same test.

Seven new pregnane compounds bearing some representative A- and B-ring brassinosteroid functions, as well as hydrogen bond donor and acceptor ones on the D ring, were efficiently synthesized. The obtained compounds did not show remarkable plant growth-promoting activity in the radish hypocotyl elongation and cotyledon expansion bioassays, however, introducing oxygen and amino functions on the D ring led to an enhancement of the bioactivity. The 16β-functionalized pregnane brassinosteroid-like compounds were slightly more active than the 16α-functionalized ones.Key words: steroids, brassinoster

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are glutamate-gated calcium permeable ion channels that play a key role in excitatory synaptic transmission and plasticity, and their dysfunction underlies several neuropsychiatric disorders. The overactivation of NMDA receptors by tonically increased ambient glutamate can lead to excitotoxicity, associated with various acute and chronic neurological disorders, such as ischemia, Alzheimer and Parkinson's disease, epilepsy or depression. On the opposite, NMDA receptor hypofunction is thought to be implicated in autism, schizophrenia, or intellectual disabil

Abstract:
Endometriosis is a chronic oestrogen-dependent gynaecological disease present in approximately 10% of women of reproductive age and up to 30–50% of women with infertility and/or pain. It is defined as the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus. The pathogenesis remains enigmatic but the most common hypothesis is Sampson’s theory of retrograde menstruation. Over the last decade, the roles of inflammation, angiogenesis, and the immune system have been well documented. Diagnosis of endometriosis is difficult since physical examination, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging can detect but not exclude the presence of endometriosis. Therefore, the gold standard for diagnosis of endometriosis remains laparoscopic visualization with histological confirmation. Medical treatment options are combined oral contraceptives, progestogens, or gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues. Surgical management is necessary in patients who want to become pregnant or those who are refractory to medical treatment. These complex surgical procedures, with significant risks and recurrence rates, should be performed by experienced teams only.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes potential biases and competing interests in prenatal counseling when conditions are diagnosed for which intrauterine surgery may be possible. Such counseling often occurs at the multidimensional interface of obstetrics and pediatrics. After considering clinical, social, and historical contexts of such counseling, the chapter presents a case that illustrates how physician demographics, interspecialty differences, divergent clinical experiences, and larger organizational factors may compound practice variation. It considers how biased counseling may influence patients’ decisions and questions whether value-neutral counseling is attainable when such fetal conditions are diagnosed. It concludes that declared commitments to value neutrality cannot insulate pregnant patients from biases and competing interests. In its recommendations, it discusses organizational responses analogous to conflict-of-interest policies. It further suggests that conversations between clinicians and patients that are mutually open about values may enhance rather than undermine patients’ ability to formulate decisions that most closely embody their true preferences.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Part 5 of the Equality Act 2010, which prohibits discrimination, harassment, and victimization in employment and analogous situations. It contains provisions regarding those who are not strictly employees but who are also protected from discrimination in the course of performing their duties such as police officers, partners, barristers and advocates, and other office holders. Part 5 also contains the Occupational Pension Schemes provisions. Meanwhile, Chapter 3 of Part 5 contains the provisions relating to equal pay, pregnancy and maternity pay, restrictions on pay discussions, and gender pay gap information. The Act consolidates and replaces the previous anti-discrimination legislation which is largely replicated in the Act, with some notable amendments. These amendments are intended to unify the level of protection across all of the protected characteristics and to resolve any anomalies, for example around disability-related discrimination.

A synthetic analogue of estrone probably cross the placenta and affect the fetus, which is reflected in the acceleration of the metabolism of the newborn.
