Full text
Abstract:
Social workers are taught to strive to link theory with practice. A primary source for social workers to update theory and practice knowledge is the myriad of social work journals. However, how much discussion of theory occurs in social work journals? The authors developed criteria to evaluate the degree and quality of theory discussion and progression in social work journals. They used the criteria to evaluate 885 articles from 30 journals published in the year 2002. Great variability in theory discussion was found. The majority (71.7%) of articles contained no theory discussion (discussion that mentions a theory superficially but does not provide refinement of the theory). Few (9.5%) of the articles had theory progression (an article which is an empirical study or conceptual explanation that advances a theory in clarity, evidence base, or precision). Those articles that include theory provide a low quality of theory discussion or progression. Implications for practice and education are discussed.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary study exploring the perception of prison officers in England and Wales regarding violence in their workplace. Design/methodology/approach Data were gathered through questionnaires administered to 152 of Her Majesty’s Prison establishments throughout England and Wales, ranging from high secure to open prisons where officers are affiliated to the Prison Officers Association. In total, 45 officers responded, seven from women’s prisons and the remainder from male adult and youth prisons. In addition, descriptive data from the Ministry of Justice statistical data set on incidents of violence are incorporated where possible. Findings Results indicated that violence, both prisoner on staff and prisoner-to-prisoner, is a major concern among prison officers, across all prison categories. The prison officers who took part considered there to be an absence of what they perceived to be serious measures to prevent and manage violence. Officers view the prison disciplinary system as ineffective, with reluctance for external charges to be considered against prisoners committing acts of violence within the prison. Research limitations/implications The research is limited by a lack of external measures being obtained (e.g. observation of aggressive incidents) and the fact that the participants were self-selecting, with only a small proportion of respondents. However, it suggests a need for more detailed research into prison violence, one that integrates the views of prison staff as well as prisoners, with the former lacking in the research base to date. It also indicates a need for more focussed action from management, staff representatives and reform lobbies to explore collectively how to prevent violence in prison. Only by adopting a multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach can a comprehensive attempt at management be achieved. Practical implications Prison violence has a negative impact on correctional settings and their mission to provide a safe working environment for staff and safe environment for prisoners. Consequently, a focussed management approach on the problem is required, one that captures the view of a range of staff and prisoners. Prisoner’s violent conduct, whether assault on staff or peers, constitutes further criminal conduct. This has to be addressed through formal processes such as prison reports, police charges and potential prosecution. The latter has been under-applied. Determining the barriers to pursuing police charges and possible prosecution would be valuable to pursue. Violence against staff needs to be more thoroughly understood and not considered solely as an occupational hazard, but as a means of safe-guarding both staff and prisoners. Originality/value This study is the first that has sought to incorporate prison workforce perception on the problem of escalating levels of prison violence, using a sample from a wide set of prison environments.

Abstract:
Preliminary work has shown the feasibility of a novel method of sizing wool yarns. The method is a nonaqueous, package-to-package technique in which a polymer size is applied to a yarn running through an air fluidized bed of powdered polymer, followed by in situ melting and air cooling. Some water soluble polymers that have properties suitable for application by this method have been investigated. Coated yarns have been produced with polymer add-on levels of 6% and 24% at treatment speeds of 70 and 40 meters/minute, respectively. Yarns treated with a water soluble polyester based polymer showed reduced hairiness and reduced incidence of fabric stitching faults in weaving trials.

Abstract:
Abstract At present, most students in the universities are considered millennials. As explained by Delcampo, Haggerty, Haney, and Knippel (2010), millennials are individuals born from 1981-2000. In general, millennials are perceived to be the “me” generation or “hero” generation. In addition, they are criticized as individuals who are self-centered, unmotivated, disrespectful, and disloyal (Myers & Sadaghiani, 2010). Given the conflicting and, to some extent, uncritical generalizations about the millennial cohort, this paper explores the work ethic profile of Filipino millennial university students. The respondents of this study are 248 university students from a private university in Metro Manila, Philippines. Through the Multidimensional Work Ethic Profile - Short Form (MWEP-SF), the seven dimension of work ethic were described. Results reveal that Filipino millennial university students scored high on self-reliance. Likewise, they have high mean scores in the dimensions of centrality of work, wasted time, morality/ethics, delay of gratification, and hard work. The dimension of leisure is ranked the lowest. The findings further reveal that there are significant differences in work ethic between male and female respondents. However, in terms of academic specialization, no significant differences were observed. Considering academic achievement, workload, and study hours, these factors interact with the different facets of work ethic.

Abstract:
Introduction: Firefighters participate in rescue activities with intense physical and psychological stress. The aim of the present study was to assess prevalence of depression and work-related stress in firefighters. Methods and findings: A questionnaire including items related to sociodemographic, health-related and work-related issues has been used. Depressive symptoms were assessed with PHQ-9 scale. Data were collected from 72 fire service workers (9 females). The mean age was 30.1±7.5 and 46.0±8.6 years for men and women respectively. 86.1% declared no chronic disease, 5.5% - hypertension and 4.2% - endocrine diseases. 62.5% were never smokers and 19.4% current smokers. 25% of the group declared drinking alcohol more than 2 times a week. More than 33.0% declared significant work-related stress. The main reasons were: lack of time to perform all activities (27.0%), low influence on work performance (15.3%), low pay (33%) and unequal treatment in the workplace (79.0%). Depressive symptoms were reported by 23%. Ten percent reported burnout symptoms and stress related to work. Conclusion: The occupational obligations and work-related stress may be responsible for the psychological problems experienced by firefighters.

Abstract:
The concept of a high commitment work system (HCWS) has mostly been used in the West to study the relationship between a firm's work systems and organizational performance. In this paper, we introduce a preliminary measure of HCWS in China based on the definition of Baron and Kreps (1999). In study 1, we tested the measure by surveying 442 employees in China's information technology (IT) industry. In study 2, we re-tested the same measure from the perspective of human resource (HR) executives in 126 foreign-invested companies. The analyses not only provided some evidence for the construct validity of this preliminary measure of a high commitment work system, but also produced some interesting results that can only be understood with regards to the history and institutional backgrounds of Chinese organizations.

Abstract:
The Purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of work ethics, which is explored through Qur’anic approach of the maqasid. The study of work ethic in the maqasid perspective is an ongoing effort to construct the Qur’anic concept of work ethic. While the theories of work ethic are widely available in various disciplines, in the discipline of Psychology, the analysis of Islamic work ethic remains a desideratum. This is due to the fact, that the specialist literature regarding management and organizational psychology rarely deals with this topic on a systematic basis. The concept of Islamic work ethic which is widely cited and used in organizational research studies is normally reduced to critical evaluation of the sources. This is due to a number of reasons among which the main is the lack of anthological basis. Moreover, in many works on Islamic work ethic the verses of the Holy Qur’an do not significantly well reflect the concept of work ethic. It is also important to stress that Holy Qur’an has its own view on the phenomenon of work. In its essence the latter is never separated from life. This fact invites to introduce the maqasid approach. The reasons are as follows: 1). It provides a systematic philosophical basis (ontology, epistemology and axiology) of conceptual development based on the Holy ‘.Holy Qur’an. The maqasid approach sees creation (human being and other creations in their entirety) as created with a purpose (maqasid, in Arabic; or maksud, in Indonesian). Within the “frame of purpose of the creation,” the construct of ethic is developed 2). The maqasid approach goes about the understanding of the Qur’anic verses related to specific area in a comprehensive and systematic manner, by looking into its semantics from the original Arabic word, and then examined its relationship with other related verses of the Holy Book. 3). The Holy Qur’an is in fact also a system of ethics; as such it comprises ethical principles related to work within the framework of the purpose of creation and life.

Abstract:
The article substantiates the necessity of changing the procedural powers of the prosecutor in the part of supervising the preliminary investigation at the stage following the initiation of the criminal case and until the final decision is made by the investigator or investigator. Proposed changes in the procedural powers of the prosecutor are also considered through the prism of the organization of the activities of the prosecution authorities, based on the experience of foreign countries, the opinion of well-deserved domestic jurists. The changes proposed by the authors will have a significant positive impact on the work of the preliminary investigation bodies, reduce the number of violations allowed in the preliminary investigation stages discussed in the article, and will help reduce the bureaucratic workf low and improve the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in general. In addition, it is justified that bringing the status of the prosecutor and the bodies of preliminary investigation into a logical procedural position will eliminate unnecessary and, in fact, harmful corporate competition.

Abstract:
Prior to any large-scale basic science or clinical research project being funded, it is important for researchers to gather preliminary data. This is essential for providing evidence for the feasibility of research projects and helping to design larger-scale studies. When gathering preliminary data one needs to consider how many data are required, how this work is to be funded and where and when the data will be generated. Most importantly researchers should ensure that the planned data collection will be meaningful, serve its intended purpose and follow the principles of good clinical practice.

Abstract:
This paper presents a preliminary work on a development of dynamic job shop scheduling model. The motivation of the study comes from an urgent need for practical procedures to enable easier and accurate feedback at operational level particularly related to job shop in small and medium-sized companies. A spreadsheet-based scheduling template is formulated and modeled using Microsoft Excel. A job shop benchmark case study available in OR-Library has been chosen to demonstrate the applicability of the basic model. The preliminary result indicating that the proposed spreadsheet model needs further refinement through incorporation of dynamic factors to be obtained from industrial practitioners.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough there are many works on individual Modern Greek dialects, there are very few overall descriptions, classifications, or cartographical representations of Greek dialects available in the literature. This paper discusses some possible reasons for these lacunae, having to do with dialect methodology, and Greek history and geography. It then moves on to employ the work of Kontossopoulos and Newton in an attempt to arrive at a more detailed classification of Greek dialects than has hitherto been attempted, using a small number of phonological criteria, and to provide a map, based on this classification, of the overall geographical configuration of Greek dialects.

Abstract:
We reviewed publications, websites, and field observations to explore the health and welfare impacts and administrative effectiveness of different legal approaches to sex work. We identified three broad legal approaches: (1) prohibition, including the unique Swedish law criminalising sex workers’ clients; (2) licensing; and (3) decriminalisation. Each of these models is employed under one or more jurisdictions in Australia. We make preliminary observations on their consequences and conclude that, on initial impression, decriminalisation may offer the best outcomes. However, more rigorous population-based research is needed to properly assess the health and welfare impacts of legal approaches to sex work.
