Incidence trends for invasive and non-invasive disease are explored. A nested case control study of those women who progress from non-invasive disease to carcinoma is performed. The incidence of vulval carcinoma in Grampian remains stable. Incidence rates of all non-invasive chronic vulval skin disorders, regardless of underlying aetiology are rising dramatically. Age specific incidence rates suggest that there may be significant ascertainment bias in rising incidence rates for each of these skin disorders. Research presented in this thesis was driven by the need to identify risk factors that predict local recurrence (LVR) in patients with vulval cancer (VSCC), and the need for more effective treatments for women with vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN). To identify the risk factors that predispose women to LVR, a multivariate analysis was performed on a well-characterized cohort of women treated for VSCC. This analysis revealed that the only independent predictor of LVR was the presence of Lichen Sclerosis (LS). These women were five times more likely to recur than those without LS. VIN is a

It is important to understand this carcinogenic process (aneuploidy and abnormal gene expression levels) and the driving forces (eg. The expressions of the apoptosis-associated proteins in OSCCs were further correlated with the clinicopathological parameters and the prognosis of the OSCC

Abstract:
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among all cancer types, and a subtype of lung cancer known as lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) is the second most predominant subtype accounting for ~30% of all lung cancer cases. Lung cancer is typically diagnosed at advanced stages, resulting in poor prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of 19% between 2008 and 2014 (Siegel et al., 2019). The lung cancer genome has extensively been profiled in part by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), identifying mutational signatures and revealing the contributions of tumor microenvironment. TCGA work has enabled t

Abstract:
Objectives: The current gold standard and more recent molecular markers in prediction of cancer risk for oral premalignant lesions (OPLs) rely upon biopsy samples of the OPLs. 'Clinicians' decision of when and where to biopsy would therefore heavily influence the results of histology and molecular markers. Unfortunately current clinical parameters used to make such decisions are far from adequate. The, objective of this thesis was to establish a multi-spectral fluorescent visualization (FV) technique and examine the potential role of FV as a visual aid to identify high-risk OPLs by exami

Incidence of oral cancer has continued to increase parallel to the consumption of betel quid since 1980s and with a similar but lesser extent of the consumption of tobacco. Long preclinical detectable phase in oral permalignant lesions (OPL), including oral submucous fibrosis, homogenous leukoplakia, non-homogenous leukoplakia, and erythroplakia, almost preceded the advent of clinical manifest oral cancer. Consequently, with proper screening, these OPLs could be d

Autofluorescence may directly reveal the biochemical as well as morphological changes, and its application in cancer diagnosis is mainly restricted to the instrumental sensitivity and resolution. Photosensitizer fluorescence, on the other hand, generates better signal to noise ratio since more photosensitizer is located at the disease site. 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)is one of the most popular chemicals for

Three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) have been identified: endothelial NOS (eNOS), neuronal NOS (nNOS), and inducible NOS (iNOS). To date, most cancer studies are concerned with iNOS. The role of iNOS in the oral carcinogenesis remains to be elucidated. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the immunohistochemical and mRNA expression of iNOS in human oral premalignant & malignant epithelial lesions and DMBA-induced hamster buccal carcinomas.
