Full textLibrary user educations have been developed in university libraries to optimise the way users search for information. Besides, we are moving today from a user paradigm towards a social paradigm which is supposed to take more into account the social environment of users. Within this context, we have wondered about the legitimacy of a library user education which would focus only on document retrieval while neglecting the sociocultural background in which information retrieval fits. The purpose of our research consisted in assessing in what way a library user education can be actually efficient in the first years at university, while relying on the concept of social representations. To do so, we carried out two studies relating to the different protagonists involved in this education : as we realized the variety of the profiles of people responsible for library user education (library staff, full time teachers, part-time lecturers on contracts, tutors), a qualitative survey was conducted so as to determine how influential this particularity could be on the efficiency of such a library user education ; a quantitative survey of the students concerned was made to determine to what extent this education is adapted to their profiles. The results have shown that information literacy education at university would be even more efficient if the people responsible for such an education wanted to collaborate and liaise efficiently, and agree with a collective professional identity. Such a collective identity would enable them to pass on to students a number of informative contents in relation to university subjects and directly linked to information science

Full textHigher education is nowadays the subject of a growing body of research at the international level. It should be noted, however, that the pedagogical practices of university teachers, particularly in Physics, giving lectures and from a didactic approach, remain rather unexplored. Our research is developed in this context. This research aims to create a methodology for qualitative analysis of lectures taught and delivered by physicist professors. We chose to concentrate on the analysis of actual teaching practices of four physics teachers in France and Colombia during a first-year undergraduate course (teaching Newtonian mechanics). Our exploration was guided by the following question: What strategies do teachers use to help students understand the content of the course? The notion of "discursive proximities" is here mobilized to enrich modeling approaches, particularly using conceptual maps; this notion makes it possible to specify and compare each discourse that was analyzed

Full textFlipped and reversed classrooms recently came up among instructional designs. In flipped classrooms, students are expected to be fully engaged, even during remote time when they work on their own in an autonomous fashion. But autonomy rather seems to be a prerequisite although presented as a goal. However, autonomy is also one of the human basic needs according to current motivation’s models. Therefore, the question is to determine what proportion of autonomy should beleft to students in flipped classrooms to stimulate motivation without negative effect on learning. In the reversed classroom, which is cognitively a very engaging design, the main concern is to determine how it is possible to help students managing both motivation and the cognitive load. We first present theories and models of motivation and self-regulated learning, then we address the learning process as a cognitive and metacognitive activity. Our research takes place in the field of information seeking. There, we will show that self-assessment is likely to trigger the cognitive, motivational and self-regulatory dimensions of learning, in flipped and reversed classrooms

Unhealthy lifestyle is associated with an increased risk of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The transition to university is associated with deterioration in lifestyle and many studies observed a weight gain during this critical period. This could have a negative impact on the cardiometabolic risk profile of young adults. The objective of this study was to describe changes in anthropometric measurements, metabolic profile, physical fitness and food intakes of students during one academic year. A total of 50 university students were involved in this study. All measurements were made at the beginning and at the end of the school year. Food intakes were assessed using the FFQ-WEB, an online self-administered quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Our results showed a significant increase in waist circumference in both men and women, while body mass index and weight were significantly increased in men. There was no significant change in physical fitness, nor in macronutrient intakes. However, vegetables and fruits consumption decreased. Total, LDL and HDL cholesterol, as well as apolipoprotein B, increased significantly in men. In women, HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B increased significantly, while the total/HDL cholesterol ratio decreased. In conclusion, this study confirms that transition to university could be associated with deterioration in metabolic profile and eating habits. Targeted interventions should be developed to help university students achieve or maintain a healthy lifestyle, including diet, during this period.

Although several studies have emphasized the importance of metacognition in musical learning and development, only a small number have examined its use in the collective and heterogeneous teaching of musical instruments in undergraduate music education programs, particularly with respect to wind instruments of the brass family. Therefore, within the framework of an interpretive/constructivist paradigm, the goal of this qualitative research study of an exploratory nature was to describe the use of metacognitive strategies in the processes of teaching and learning these instruments and reading music notation, during the course Complementary Instrument - Winds 1, in an undergraduate program in music education at a public university in Northeastern Brazil. A 32-hour pedagogical intervention was carried out employing didactic materials and pedagogical approaches designed in the interest of promoting, in addition to learning these instruments and reading music notation, the metacognitive development of the students. The sample was comprised of eight students (n = 8), four females and four males, aged 19-22 years old. Data collection tools included a Questionnaire on Socio-demographic Data and Prior Musical Knowledge, nine Reflection Reports, a Reflection Questionnaire and a Music Study and Performance Practice Test. A content analysis was conducted using coding strategies based on the work of Garcia and Dubé (2012) and Whitebread et al. (2009). A total of 856 metacognitive indices were identified that allowed the researcher to describe the characteristics of the learning process, highlighting aspects related to metacognitive knowledge about people, tasks and strategies, as well as the management of mental processes related to planning, control and regulation. The results of this research study suggest that metacognition can be an important tool in the contexts of collective teaching of musical instruments, allowing not only for learning and/or musical development, but also for the development of pedagogical skills.

Full textDropout from undergraduate university programs has attracted researchers’ attention. However, it is difficult to understand persistence in undergraduate studies due to the complexity of this phenomenon and the large number of associated factors. Persistence in undergraduate studies seems to be related to individual, contextual factors and the financial situation during the studies. Until now, these factors were studied independently, and to our knowledge, no study attempted to take into account the combined effect of these factors in the same model. In this doctoral dissertation, our goal is to understand the relevant determinants of undergraduate persistence based on expectancy-value theory (Eccles et al., 1983), the interactional model (Tinto, 1975) and the financial impact model (Paulsen & St. John, 1997; St. John, 1990; St. John et al., 1994). The purpose of this dissertation is thus to validate a model of persistence. It includes two studies. A retrospective study that allows the assessment, from the previous experience of students (n = 731), of factors that played a role in persistence. Also, a prospective study was conducted over a 6 months period in a sample of students pursuing a bachelor’s program at Laval University (n = 3 084). Findings of the retrospective study indicate that the financial variables, previous academic performance, and the fact of obtaining a college degree (Cégep) predict students’ persistence. In the prospective study, among the factors considered, competence beliefs, expectancies for success, and the intrinsic value contribute in the prediction of intention to persist. Only two interactional factors predict the intention to persist: peer-group interactions and the institutional and goal commitments. For the second measuring time embedded in the prospective study, we observed that intention to persist, faculty concern for student development and teaching, academic and intellectual development and the fact of obtaining a college degree (Cégep) predict persistence. Theoretical, methodological, and practical implications are discussed and directions for further research are proposed.

Full textThis research focuses on requests for help from undergraduate students attending an online course. Specifically, the links of these with self-regulation are studied. Indeed, although asking for help when a difficulty is encountered promotes learning (Nelson-Le Gall, 1981; Puustinen, 2013), few studies on this learning strategy in an online course have been conducted (Koc et Liu, 2016; Puustinen, 2012). Therefore, this thesis aims to better understand requests for help in the context of online courses and pursues the following three specific objectives: 1) Describe requests for help from undergraduate students in an online course; 2) Compare students' requests for help with their declared strategies regarding self-regulation of cognition and behavior; 3) Adapt the model of help-seeking of Puustinen (2013) to undergraduate students in an online course. This descriptive and exploratory research is based on a mixed methodology to collect the declared strategies but also the actual practices of students. Thus, 116 undergraduate students at Laval University who were taking an online course agreed to participate in the research. The online questionnaires they responded to, the e-mails and forum posts they sent, and the meta-data tracking their usage of the learning environment platform were analyzed. The results of the study showed that, overall, students routinely self-regulate regarding their cognition and behavior. Traces of this self-regulation could be detected in their help request messages. This study also revealed that most students did not ask for help, neither by email nor on the discussion forums. The reasons for this behavior could not be identified, but possible explanations are proposed. In addition, several self-regulatory indicators from the Puustinen (2013) model were validated. Additional indicators, not present in Puustinen's research, were added in order to adapt to our context.

Full textWith the use of Information and communication technologies (ICT), lecturers’ principal mission is twofold: to facilitate knowledge acquisition and development. The main objective of this work is to define a model of mentoring strategy, which can be beneficial for the development of students’ self-direction in blended learning contexts. A framework of mentoring strategies (FMS) is proposed based on the literature review. A series of case studies have been undertaken to compare lecturers’ teaching strategies in a blended learning environment. The results show that the increase in students’ level of self-direction is not dependent on the type of blended learning environment but supported by the implementation of an active learning method. Our results also show that this development is related to students’ performance in the course. We then test one of these strategies within the framework of English as a second language (ESL) teaching. It is assumed that the results are extendible to other second language learning activities

Full textThis thesis presents a qualitative study on the affordances of an educational serious game (ESG) for learning English as a second language (ESL) in a formal classroom setting. Learning affordances refer to the action possibilities offered by a digital game for learning a second language to student-players who can perceive them. The study of digital game affordances is useful for identifying game components that can support learning from the perspective of student-players, which is not well documented in the scientific literature. In fact, identifying game components that support learning could be useful to (1) inform game design decisions when creating games for educational purposes and (2) to inform the selection of ESGs as a pedagogical tool for learning in formal educational settings. Yet, few scientific studies have examined the affordances of digital games for ESL learning. To the best of our knowledge, no study has focused on identifying affordances in an ESG designed specifically for ESL learning. Our findings are relevant to game designers of ESGs, videogame companies creating ESGs, teachers selecting games as instructional materials for their courses, and all educators designing digital game-based interventions. The theoretical framework of our study is based in the second generation of activity theory (AT) and the concept of affordance. In particular, the concepts of activity, mediation, and agentivity characterize our approach to study student-players' interactions with an ESG based on their intentions or objects; to study ESGs as mediating artifacts of learning and entertainment; and to consider contextual aspects that might influence activity in learner-players' play. Data was collected from participants through a variety of instruments including questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, reflection reports, and digital traces of 2 gaming sessions. We analyzed the gaming activity of four undergraduate students enrolled in an ESL course and selected based on their experience playing digital games and their proficiency level of English. This analysis was inspired by the work of Reeves et al., (2017) on ethno-methodological analysis of games. It included (1) participants' actions in the classroom, (2) student-players' interactions with the ESG on screen and (3) participants' perceptions of the ESG. Thus, based on the analysis of students' perceptions and digital traces of their gaming activity, we identified eight perceived affordances that mobilize linguistic, socio-cultural, discursive and language knowledge : (1) learning new words, (2) pronouncing words in English, (3) perceiving grammatical structure, (4) communicating messages appropriate to the context, (5) practicing communication in real life, (6) organizing words and phrases to communicate and act, (7) practicing listening comprehension, and (8) practicing listening and reading comprehension. Perceived affordances refer to the opportunities for learning English as a second language noticed by the students. Five of the eight perceived affordances were coded as real affordances, that is, affordances that are perceived and used by participants as documented in digital traces: (1) learning new words; (2) communicating context-appropriate messages; (3) organizing words and phrases for communication and action; (4) practicing listening comprehension; and (5) practicing listening and reading comprehension in an integrated manner. Three perceived affordances were not identified on the digital traces for methodological reasons: (1) pronouncing words in English, (2) perceiving grammatical structure, and (3) practicing communication in real life. The affordances for learning ESL are associated with specific game components, including 4 chore game mechanics and 17 digital game objects (DGO). Our findings indicate that participants' experience playing digital games had a stronger influence on the perception of affordances for learning than their declared English language proficiency level. The results of this study highlight the need for pedagogical support from the teacher during and after a game-based activity in a classroom setting in order to focus students' attention on language content and avoid the fossilization of incorrect vocabulary. In addition, we provide a series of recommendations to support the design of digital games for second language learning.

Full textWater network, blood circulation, sap flow in a tree are three phenomena studied in different disciplinary fields but all linked with an internal fluid flow. Our work deals with the teaching of such phenomena in undergraduate courses at the university level. Our work is situated within the Nature of Science (NOS) research field and deals with modeling and teachers. We use Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) as our theoretical framework in order to explore the knowledge teachers teach, particularly the strategies dimension. We analyze the structure of the models they introduce, and the empirical contexts and the modeling processes they propose. We also study the pedagogical contexts, especially the use of the history of science and the potential influence of the types of discipline and of training course on the practices. We use a methodology mixing qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis in this exploratory. We made 39 semi-structured interviews of Physics and biology teachers working in different training courses (generalist-engineering physics, technical physics and bio-medical) from 2 countries (France and the USA). We selected the 23 most structured interviews and we analyzed their responses using a grid that we created and refined. We tried to identify the institutional and personal dimensions of the teachers’ way of teaching by examining the similarities and differences among teachers’ families. We show that the ‘Biomedical’ family is homogene in terms of modeling and contextualizing contrary to the ‘generalist-engineering physics’ family and reveal no difference according to the country. We also show that authentic experiments and history of science are rarely introduced in teaching. Questioning teachers about unusual situations helped us to study their expertise

Full textThis research studies the social processes to which secondary school teachdrs in France are submitted to and attempts to grasp how professional stances and practices are formatted at a very early stage. The empirical device adopted is based on three main types opf material (1) a series of biographical interviews of newly recruited secondary school teachers, (2) prolonged obsrvation of the class activity of a number of these, and (3) secondary analyses of quantitative studies fashioned by the INSEE and the CEREQ. Such anb investigaion allows the exploration of those factors determining the initial acces tinto teaching, the delineatioin of forms of professional socialisation through teacher training (IUFM) and the definition of differences in teaching practices. All of these elements are finally mobilised to explain the way different teaching "styles" are constructed from the very start of teaching careers
