Abstract:
The tearing and burning sensations associated with raw onion consumption are caused by (Z,E)-propanethial S-oxide, the lachrymatory factor (LF). The LF is produced from the hydrolysis of S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine S-oxide (PREN), the dominant flavor compound in onions. Current methodology for LF quantification was optimized for Granex-type onions using a 2-min incubation time to allow for maximum formation. In this study, data were taken on PREN hydrolysis of `Dehydrator #3' and `Granex 33' at harvest and during storage and were compared to LF formation. `Dehydrator #3' PREN hydrolysis was 98% complete 5 s after cellular disruption at each sampling date. However, using the 2-min incubation procedure, only 10.25 μmol of LF was recovered from the hydrolysis of 30.11 μmol of PREN at harvest, thereby underestimating LF for this cultivar. Percent PREN hydrolysis for `Granex 33' was lower than `Dehydrator #3' during the enzymatic reaction at each sampling date, suggesting slower PREN hydrolysis activity. At harvest, 6.96 μmol of LF were recovered from 12.54 μmol of PREN hydrolyzed. After 2 storage months, however, micromol of LF were equal to micromol of PREN. LF quantification is currently being considered by the onion industry as a direct measurement of gross onion pungency. This data suggests that more optimization of LF quantification is needed before it can be applied to a broad range of cultivar types.

Abstract:
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplement type and narasin inclusion on the frequency and supplement intake of grazing Bos indicus beef bulls. Four hundred animals were ranked by initial BW (383 ± 35 kg) and allocated into one of four paddocks of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú (100 animals/paddock). Paddocks were randomly assigned to receive either a mineral salt (MIN) or a protein-energetic supplement (PREN) containing or not narasin (N) for a 90-d period. An individual electronic data capture system with 11 feed bunks was used to individually measure supplement intake and meal frequency in each paddock. The evaluations and analysis of individual intake, frequency of visits to the feeder, and intake per visit (I/V) were performed every 15 d and classified as periods (PR1 through PR6). All data were analyzed as a 2 × 2 factorial design with the PROC MIXED procedure of SAS. A supplement type × N × PR interaction was observed (P < 0.0001) for daily supplement intake. No differences were observed between MIN, whereas PREN had a greater (P ≤ 0.03) supplement intake on PR1 and PR3, but a reduced supplement intake on PR6 compared with PREN + N (P = 0.02). Moreover, no supplement type × N interaction (P = 0.47) or N (P = 0.44) effects were observed for daily supplement intake in the present study. A supplement type × N × PR interaction was detected (P < 0.0001) for the frequency of visits in the feeders. Throughout the experimental period, animals from the MIN + N had a greater (P ≤ 0.02) frequency of visits compared with MIN cohorts. A supplement effect was detected for I/V (P = 0.02), whereas neither a narasin effect (P = 0.74) nor interactions (P ≥ 0.16) were observed. Animals offered PREN had a greater I/V when compared with MIN cohorts (145 vs. 846 g/d for MIN and PREN, respectively; SEM = 16.1). When these data are reported as percentage of days visiting the feeder within each PR, MIN and MIN + N animals visited the feeder for 25.8% and 35.9% of the days, respectively. Conversely, no differences were observed (P = 0.65) in the overall mean visits per PR between PREN and PREN + N (12.8 vs. 12.3 d for PREN and PREN + N, respectively; SEM = 0.195). As percentage of days visiting the feeder, PREN and PREN + N visited the feeder for 85.1% and 81.9% of the days, respectively. In summary, narasin inclusion did not reduce supplement intake, regardless of supplement type, but increased the frequency of visits to the feeder for the MIN treatment.

Abstract:
Dolichols isolated from leaves of the fern Matteucia struthiopteris were present as a mixture of prenologues composed of 14 up to 20 isoprene units with Dol-16 dominating. They comprised approximately 0.004% of the fresh weight of fresh plant tissue and were accompanied by traces of polyprenols (Pren-14 up to Pren-17, Pren-16 dominating). Their structure was confirmed by electropray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). This is the first time that dolichols have been reported as dominating polyisoprenoid alcohols in plant photosynthetic tissue.

Abstract:
The application of pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) equations for stainless steels has become ubiquitous across many industries, none more so than the petroleum industry. These useful equations are often used to develop new alloys based on generating the highest possible PREN, however, they are frequently applied incorrectly to environments that are not consistent with the original basis of their development. This focused review presents some of the origins of the PREN equations and their limitations especially for use in oil and gas applications.

Abstract:
The scarcity of oil and gas resources made High Pressure and High Temperature (HPHT) reservoir attractive to be developed. The sour service environment gives an additional factor in material selection for HPHT reservoir. Austenitic 28 Cr and super duplex stainless steel 2507 (SS 2507) are proposed to be a potential materials candidate for such conditions. C-ring tests were performed to investigate their corrosion behavior, specifically sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and sulfide stress cracking susceptibility. The C-ring tests were done under 2.55 % H2S (31.48 psia) and 50 % CO2 (617.25 psia). The testing was done in static environment conditions. Regardless of good SSC resistance for both materials, different pitting resistance is seen in both materials. The pitting resistance did not follow the general Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), since SS 2507 super duplex (PREN > 40) has more pitting density than 28 Cr austenitic stainless steel (PREN < 40). SS 2507 super duplex pit shape tends to be larger but shallower than 28 Cr austenitic stainless steel. 28 Cr austenitic stainless steel has a smaller pit density, yet deeper and isolated.

Abstract:
The 'ceffyl pren' ('wooden horse') was a ritual shaming punishment used by neighbours against offenders who were held to have breached communal norms. The use of the practice in the nineteenth century is often presented as a survival of a long-established custom, rooted in rural Welsh life and in decline due to suppression by the instruments of the state. This article argues that the ceffyl pren was not in its origin ancient, nor particularly Welsh, and that its use increased in the nineteenth century. The reasons for the development of the practice at that later time are then considered.

Abstract:

Sandgren, Daniel. "Test av brunnslock i komposit enligt standard prEN 124." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för tillämpad fysik och elektronik, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-100025.

Full text
Abstract:
Projektets arbetsmoment kan delas in i tre saker. Däremot blev utförandet något förenklat i vissa delar.
Standards are used in all parts of society to secure quality, safety, and efficiency. Some guiding requirements for design and production as well as the certification methods for manhole covers are specified in standard prEN 124. It is currently undergoing changes and is the reason for this project.Brunnspecialisten AB, a company located in Holmsund, is the project owner. They need to certify their product according to prEN 124 to continue their business. The thesis project was devided into three parts. The first part presents what kind of tests that have to be made to secure that a gully top or manhole top meets the standard according to prEN 124. The second part interprets how these tests should be done and the third part; to carry out four of these tests. The defined tests are collected in a document. The purpose of the document is to help Brunnspecialisten AB when the manhole covers are to be certified according to prEN 124. Twelve tests are defined in the certification standard called prEN 124. Eight of these tests shall be interpreted and described in the previously mentioned document. With the document follows a flow chart. The flow chart shows in which order the tests are carried out. Two of the tests will not be carried out, and a part of this project investigates if they can be removed. SMP (Swedish Machinery Testing Institute) deemed that the tests can be skipped, accepting the alternative design which is the reason why the tests are undoable. The deformation test is only mentioned in the flow chart. Slip/skid resistance test was not included in this project. The certifying institution is the Swedish Machinery Testing Institute. They could read prEN 124 and develop the test methods for the manhole top certification. With this project the hope is to minimize the work that SMP needs to do in preparation for the certifying tests. The less work SMP put in the cheaper the certification will be for Brunnspecialisten AB.The four tests carried out in this project were water absorption, resistance against vehicle fluids, impact resistance and heat resistance. These four tests were carried out as planned, but on some parts the tests were not carried out as defined in prEN 124. The reasons were shortage of time and to save money. The results show that the manhole tops meet the requirements set in the standard prEN 124.The diversions done in the test process are considered acceptable. This is because the project owner has been participating in the tests, giving them the chance to add more resources to get more similarity to the defined test method. The four tests are deemed to make the gully top and manhole covers ready for certifying tests for water absorption, resistance against vehicle fluid, impact resistance, and heat resistance.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an experimental HIV prevention approach whereby antiretroviral pills are used before anticipated exposure. It is unclear how ethical considerations have been addressed by investigators. METHODS. A systematic review of PrEP controlled prospective studies was conducted. Pre-determined data items were extracted from registries, protocols, reports, and consent forms. Study characteristics, methods, and ethics considerations were synthesized. RESULTS. Among sixteen studies included, twelve involved resource-limited countries. Quality scores were generally high and overall risk of bias was low. Considerations for social value were the least reported whereas considerations for the fair selection of study population were the most reported. More ethics considerations tend to be reported with time. No meta-analysis was performed, as few data were available. CONCLUSION. As critical as clinical data generation is for scientific progress, ethics should be monitored and adequately reported, lest lack of consideration for key principles be uncovered after the facts.

This thesis reports a study on the melt impregnation and weaving of glass/PP pre-preg tapes into sheet for use as the precursor for pressed thermoplastic composite products, and a comparison of the properties attainable with those achievable by other comparable routes. Melt impregnation has been used successfully to manufacture well-impregnanted tapes of polypropylene and glass fibres, with and without coupling agent. It appears that weaving could be an economically viable process for converting unidirectional tape into a press-formable pre-preg.

Fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composites consist of two or more components combined to give a synergistic effect for a better performance in service. One of the phases comprises layers of fibrous material while the other phase comprises of a polymer matrix. In this project, carbon fibre pre-preg material was used. All materials contain imperfections. Materials constituents and manufacturing anomalies are the main causes of faults in FRP composites. The presence of voids in FRP composites is the most common defect. The aim of this project was to determine the influence of voids on the static and dynamic compressive properties of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. The influence of voids on fatigue life and failure behaviour were also investigated.

Abstract:

The primary purpose of my research is to visually represent what can be regarded as a traditional Chinese thinking system and artistic style. This is to gain a deeper understanding of typical problem-solving processes of the Chinese culture. Through this research, I intend to encourage a bridge of communication between American and other cultures. It is my intent to help analyze problem-solving traditions in Chinese culture, and present a narrative that dramatizes this. The goal of this thesis; therefore, is to give a path of connection and appreciation for those not familiar, to a deeper understanding of contextualized Chinese beliefs. My process is aimed at constructing an effective narrative that illustrates the way a society creates change, in order to reflect broader cultural exchange and communication. The inspiration to undertake this study came from my three years’ of living in Los Angeles. Being suddenly transplanted into American culture made me critically review my own cultural beliefs. I often experienced cases of “misunderstandings” or “conflicts”. I perceived issues that were often embedded in the different ways that various cultures viewed and dealt with similar problems. There were, of course, differences in problem solving strategies, alongside differences in aesthetics, and perception. Consequently, based on these observations, I began to analyze how contrasting viewpoints and strategies could be translated into an animated narrative, and I wondered how I could effectively achieve this. Through this process, I addressed problems or crisis within various types of political systems. Can the methodology one uses to solve a problem be seen as systematic of the process of their own culture, even though the end goals and difficulties faced may be similar throughout various cultures? To critically analyze this question, I combined narrative animation and graphic watercolor renderings that visually parallel my personal experience of what could be defined as exemplary of traditional Chinese thought. An animated film resulted from this process, along with further research aimed at stimulating the public to appreciate the underlying approaches in both traditional Chinese aesthetics and culture. With this research, I intend to stimulate positive connections and appreciation between all cultures—a sentiment that extends to having increased inter-cultural communication and exchanges.

Full text
Abstract:
Great progress was observed in the European standardization in the last years in the field of the design of floating type bolted flange connections. New design rules were developed (EN 1591) which include new definitions of gasket characteristics for the calculation of floating type flanged joints. In addition a new gasket testing standard was drafted (prEN 13555) which assures a comprehensive characterization of gaskets for bolted flanged joints. This draft standard contains some new features which were examined and validated within a still running European research project PERL (Pressure Equipment - Reduction of Leak Rate). The gasket testing strategy layed down in prEN 13555 is presented in this paper. Some testing results highlighten the measuring procedures and the evaluation of the gasket characteristics.

Full text
Abstract:
The high grade performance of gaskets for bolted flange connections in terms of TA Luft and VDI guideline 2440 assumes the fulfilment of the following requirements: Long-term suitability of the gasket particularly with regard to the exposure to the operating temperature and the medium; this requires the investigation of the long-term behaviour, e.g. according to DIN 28090-2 and DIN 28090-3 The design of flange connections (strength and tightness proof) on the basis of realistic gasket characteristics determined experimentally, e. g. according to DIN 28090-1 or prEN 13555 Compliance with the specific leakage rate of 10-4 mbar 1 / (s·m) in a type test at 1 bar test pressure. Similar requirements are effective for packings of stuffing boxes, in which the type test is carried out under more intensive boundary conditions compared to the flange connections: real operating pressure and stem strokes. In the frame of a research project sponsored by the German chemical industry a choice of gaskets were tested which cover all gasket types in the European gasket standard EN 1514 part 1 to 7. The gasket types were classified in view of their high grade performance potential. Similar investigations and analyses were carried out for standard packings for stuffing boxes. These results and their consequences are presented. In addition to the explicitly mentioned requirements in VDI 2440 further requirements should be seen as important in view of the assurance of high grade performance: Quality control during gasket production This can be ensured by manufacturers quality management and by compliance with requirements of corresponding quality standards, e.g. DIN 28091 (an European quality standard (prEN 14772) for gaskets is in preparation) Controlled assembly, which is necessary to realise the design assembly bolt load with limited scattering High grade performance proof of gaskets, more correctly of gasketed bolted flange connections has to be regarded as a complex matter in opposition to common interpretations and involves more than just the compliance with a certain leakage rate criterion of a special type test.

Full text
Abstract:
The load-carrying capacity or the safety against plastic limit states are central questions in the design of pressure equipment. The new European standard prEN 13445-3 reflects the fact that plastic limit states can be calculated simply by perfectly plastic limit and shakedown analyses. These methods can be derived from static and kinematic theorems for lower and upper bound analysis, respectively. Both may be formulated as optimization problems for finite element discretizations of structures. The problems of large-scale analysis have been solved in an European research project. The methods could be made more realistic by extension to other material models such as a two-surface plasticity model of kinematic hardening. Limit and shakedown analyses are briefly demonstrated with illustrative examples, which are chosen to show some limitations of the 3Sm criterion and the effect of kinematic hardening.

In The 13th international scientific conference “Modern Building Materials, Structures and Techniques”. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3846/mbmst.2019.027.

Full text
Abstract:
Various examples of glass load bearing structures such as beams, columns, panes, or even stairs are used in a current architecture. For safety reasons, these members are mostly made of laminated glass. Polymeric interlayers are used for glass plates bonding and their shear stiffness, as a time-temperature dependent parameter, meaningly influences the response of the entire perpendicularly loaded laminated glass pane. Even though the shear stiffness of the interlayer is available, the exact stress-state analysis of the pane is rather challenging. This paper compares the results of perpendicularly loaded double laminated glass panes at various boundary conditions, calculated by current advanced analytical methods and by the draft of the European standard prEN 16612 to the numerical simulation performed in RFEM 5®. Important differences between these methods are illustrated. Futher recommendations for a design of these structures in practice are also provided.

Roos, E., K. H. Herter, and F. Otremba. "Detailed Assessment of Fatigue Life: A Critical Review." In ASME 2002 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. ASMEDC, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2002-1329.

Full text
Abstract:
For the construction, design and operation of technical components and systems the appropriate technical codes and standards provide detailed stress analysis procedures, material data and a design philosophy which guarantees a reliable behaviour of the structural components throughout the specified lifetime. Especially for cyclic stress evaluation the different codes and standards provide different fatigue analyses procedures to be performed considering the various (specified or measured) loading histories (of mechanical and thermal origin) and geometric complexities of the components. In order to fully understand the background of the fatigue analysis included in the codes and standards as well as of the fatigue design curves used as a limiting criteria (to determine the fatigue life usage factor), it is important to understand the history and the methodologies which are available for the design engineers. In the paper the different fatigue analysis procedures in the technical codes and standards (e.g. ASME-III, KAT 3201.2, prEN 13445-18) are discussed in detail. The most important parameters influencing the fatigue analysis, like plastification factor Ke, the correction factors with respect to mean stress, to surface finish, to tempeature, to the environment and to unwelded and welded components are verified on the basis of experimental results. Thus safety margins relevant for the assessment of fatigue life are shown and compared with the safety factors implemented in the different technical codes and standards.
