ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to analyze the second-trimester fetal autopsies and to reemphasize the role of autopsy by comparing autopsy findings with prenatal ultrasound observations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of second-trimester fetal autopsies over a period of 7.5 years (January 2009–June 2016). A standard protocol of autopsy procedure was followed, which included external examination with photography, X-ray, internal examination, and histopathological examination. Here, we explore the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in adolescence. We investigated associations between meconium ethyl glucoronide (EtG) and facial malformation. For 129 children (66/63 male/female; M = 13.3, SD = 0.32, 12–14 years), PAE was implemented by newborn meconium EtG and maternal self-reports during the third trimester. Cognitive development was operationalized by standardized scores (WISC V). The EtG cut-off values were set at ≥10 ng/g (n = 32, 24.8% EtG10+) and ≥112 ng/g (n = 20, 15.5% EtG112+). Ebstein’s anomaly is a rare type of congenital heart defect characterized by a malformation of the tricuspid valve and the right side of the heart. This case study presents a well-documented case of Ebstein’s anomaly that was diagnosed prenatally using sonography. The ability of prenatal sonography to detect and accurately diagnosis this case allowed for a change in the management of the pregnancy to properly evaluate the condition and prepare for treatment. In addition, information regarding Ebstein’s anomaly is reviewed and specifically addresses etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, cha

Abstract Medical imaging is predominantly a visual field. In this context, prenatal ultrasound images assume intense social, ethical, and psychological significance by virtue of the subject they represent: the fetus. This feature, along with the sophistication introduced by three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging that allows improved visualization of the fetus, has contributed to the common impression that prenatal ultrasound scans are like photographs of the fetus. In this article we discuss the consistency of such a comparison. First, we investigate the epistemic role of both analogic and

We explore the outcome of a fetus with a posterior fossa abnormality thought to be a Dandy-Walker malformation based on prenatal ultrasound imaging. The infant was later diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as having an isolated cisterna magna. When assessing brain abnormalities, there is increased accuracy of prenatal MRI versus prenatal ultrasound. Accurate diagnosis of an infant is paramount so that an inheritance pattern, risk of recurrence, involvement of other systems, and a prognosis can be determined. Abstract Background Screening ultrasound (US) has increased the detection of congenital vascular anomalies in utero. Complementary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may improve the diagnosis, but its real utility is still not well established. Objectives We aimed to describe the imaging findings on prenatal US and MRI of the most frequent congenital vascular anomalies (lymphatic malformations and congenital hemangiomas) to assess the accuracy of prenatal US and MRI exams for diagnosis and to evaluate the relevance of the additional information obtained by complementary fetal MRI. We report the case of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the vein of Galen diagnosed in utero at the 34th week of gestation by ultrasound and MRI. Following interdisciplinary advice, the family decided to terminate the pregnancy. This was carried out in the 36th week of gestation. Mascroscopic study of the fetus confirmed the in utero diagnosis: considerable dilatation of the cerebral arteries, the Galen vein and the anteroinferior sinuses. SUMMARY BACKGROUND: Asymmetric or heteropagus conjoined twins is a rare occurrence, with an incidence of one case in 1-2 million. Conjoined twins are classified according to their symmetry, place of fusion, and grade of duplication. METHODS: We report here an extremely rare presentation of parasitic twins not described before. We describe macro and micro anatomic alterations and discuss the aspects of this peculiar presentation and the importance of prenatal diagnosis. RESULTS: The case of a twenty-three-year-old patient, with monochorionic, monoamniotic asymmetrically-conjoined twin pregnancy

ABSTRACT Prenatal repair for open spina bifida (OSB) represents nowadays a valid therapeutic option that must be considered whenever a fetus is diagnosed with this severe congenital malformation. However, a judicious weighing of the benefits obtained by fetal surgery against the risks is necessary for every individual case. This article provides the background information that is needed to accomplish that. It describes the evolution of fetal surgery for spina bifida, its benefits and risks, and the different techniques used today. How to cite this article Mazzone L, Meuli M. Intrauterine Treat
