Various linguists working within the theory of Government and Binding (e.g. Hornstein & Weinberg (1981), Kayne (1981)) have attempted to provide a unified account of preposition-stranding. Preposition placement has not been studied in Nigerian English and in specific genres. The 160 246-word relevant component of ICE-Nigeria was the sub-corpus used, and the Systemic Theory guided the study. In this research, we explore the linguistic structure of the Spanish of Heritage Speakers, those who have acquired Spanish as the home language in a minority language context (Iverson, 2010). We contribute to the discussion of the properties of Heritage Languages here by examining Preposition Stranding in Heritage Speakers versus native monolingual speakers of Spanish. We claim that the distinct behavior of Heritage Speakers of Spanish supports the claim that Heritage Languages may differ from native monolingual language in the narrow syntax, affecting uninterpretable features of the grammar.

P-words encompass prepositions, particles, and prefixes. The cases associated with each preposition (P) are determined partly lexically and partly syntactically. Because of the dative-instrumental-ablative-locative syncretism, most Ps in Gothic are accompanied by the dative. Prefixation is the primary means of altering the meaning or (lexical) aspect of Gothic verbs and deriving new verbs. Most verbs can take prefixes of some sort. Strings of preverbs in the unmarked case are ordered source &gt; goal &gt; place. In main clauses, verbs allow particle stranding of the outermost of two particles, but in subordinate clauses and infinitives, all verbal particles must undergo adjunction. Preposition incorporation is frequent but productive only with miþ (with). Potential instances of preverb gapping are not unequivocal.
