Full textThis study aims to unify in a single approach the descriptions given by cognitive semantics and associated representations, studied by formal semantics. Cognitive semantics consists to associate the meanings of the analyzed with schemes. Formal semantics consists in studying the modes of representation of these schemes and the relations to the observables. Our study is based on the general model developed at the Paris-Sorbonne University in the LaLIC group, using the GAC model (Applicative and Cognitive Grammar) and GRACE (GRammar Applicative Cognitive and Enunciative), these two models use the one hand to the topology and on the other hand to the combinatory logic in order to an automatic processing of meanings. We have chosen to study the problem of the three prepositions: dans, sous and à of French and their equivalences in Arabic, this leads us to search for invariants associated with these three prepositions or relators, the preposition dans refers to the interiority of a place, be it spatial, temporal, spatial-temporal, notional or activity and the preposition sous refers to a specific place or generated by another place whose closing is taken. The preposition à refers to the closing of a place, here the place is cognitive or abstract place, sufficiently general that according to the context can take more particular values

Full textWe propose a semantico-cognitive analysis of French spatial prepositions based on the model of the applicative and cognitive grammar as defined by j. -p. Desclès. The aim of the study is to show how space is represented in language (French in our particular case). We put forward the hypothesis that a spatial preposition specifies a site which functions like a landmark. The landmarks characterize different stages of movement (initial stage, final stage, intermediate stage, or the entire movement) and enable the localization of an entity or a trajectory. The landmarks are generated by three types of operations: application of topological operators (interior, exterior, closure, frontier, neighborhood), application of orientation operators (an orientation is assigned to an entity, and a site is generated from the entity thus orientated), and the highlighting of sites through activities. The verbs of motion can be represented by a succession of static situations of localization. Each preposition is then simultaneously assigned two operators: one (topological or of orientation) which specifies a site, and one which introduces this site as a landmark into the verb representation. Some prepositions (called "complex") require that a particular situation in the representation of the verb be specified (the initial site for the preposition de for instance). Others (called "simple") have semantic values which require only specification of a site (the preposition dans, for instance) without indication of what situation will be specified. In this case, the site serves as the landmark for the entire movement or for its end. Unlike the complex prepositions, the specifications of simple prepositions are determined by the semantic value of the verb itself and not by that of the prepositions

Full textThe objective of this research is to make a concrete and practical contribution to the still rough knowledge of the bilingual lexicography including both languages : French and Arabic. Indeed, until now, we do not attach enough attention on the French-Arabic, and Arabic-French, bilingual dictionaries, as well as for the methodical aspects they illustrate as for the practical dictionary-making choices. We consult theses dictionaries without testing their limits and shortcomings. Having said that, what are the lexicographic and dictionaric methods recommended in these dictionaries ? What are the essentials characteristics that these dictionaries must have to be able to answer the requirements of the readers ? This study will therefore attempt to describe the lexiographic and dictionaric practices of some bilingual lexicographers, to try to solve some problems bound to the methodology. To learn more about these dictionaries, the bounded corpus of this analysis focuses on three periods : the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first century. The examination of their characteristics and the exploitation of their content reveals that from the dictionaric (dictionnairique) point of view, the lexicographers are not interested enough neither in paratextual elements nor in macrostructural and microstructural semiotics. For example, in the lexicographic prospect, lexicographers do not deal in the same way with the neological processes. Besides, as for phraseology, in this particular case the free phrases, the collocations and the frozen sequences conveying the semantic information, the bilingual lexicographers still too much neglect their organizational aspects in the body of the acticles. As for the definitions, they are very rare. In consequence, the lexicographers do not encode and decode enough the information. Besides, a lot of these dictionaries neglect the importance of the lexicographical speech, so they are less sensitive to the importance of the cultural information. Concerning the iconographic landscape, most of the consulted dictionaries often neglect the importance of the illustration. However, this last one is normally considered as “ […] auxiliary of the idea ”, because the readers always feel “ the need for accurate documents ”. To make better use of the French-Arabic, Arabic-French bilingual dictionaries, it is therefore important and necessary to consider lexicography and practical dictionary-making as two complementary activities

Full textThe prepositional groups expressing cause and consequence in german display a great variety of bases which have been little studied untel now. Although under half of those bases belong exclusively to the specific domains of cause and consequence, wegen, halber, infolge, aufgrund, dank, mangels, um. . . Willen, zuliebe, angesichts et anlablich - this restriction does not hold for other prepositions found in the same contexts. The analyses carried out here allow clear identification of their meanings. The contrastive slant of the work has revealed that where cause very often superseded by a more personal evaluation. It turns out that french shows greater impartiality than german as a french speaker will tend to keep his distance more often than his german speaking counterpart. To shed some light on the jungle of prepositions and prepositional phrases used to signifiy causality the semantic study has had to to abandon the restricted framework of the prepositional phrase and adopt a discourse semantic approach

Full textThis dissertation examines how speakers of English and French express static locative relationships in oral discourse. These relationships situate an object (or group of objects) at a fixed point in space : for example, the book is next to the sofa. We argue that speakers express the nature of these relationships - such as that encoded by next to - in both speech and gesture, and that the two modalities interact in a complementary fashion to convey locative meaning. At the core of our investigation is an original experiment in which native speakers of Australian English and French were asked to describe two pictures of everyday spatial scenes to a partner. Data were filmed and speech and gesture annotated using the video software ELAN. As part of this process were developed a new method for defining and separating locative expressions. We also developed a comprehensive labeling system to capture the core informational content of co-speech gestures. Our results show that both Anglish and French speakers make productive use of gesture to express locative information. We make two major original contributions to knowledge. The first of these is that speakers use gesture to express specific directional information which is not encoded by particular lexical spatial items (for example, next to, à côté de, between and entre). The second is that speakers can simultaneously target the locations of different objects in speech and gesture. These two insights forcefully highlight the layered, multimodal nature of locative communication

Full textOur work is a didactic, traductologic, and linguistic study. This work aims to find a solution for the French-Arabic / Arabic-French translation teaching in French as Foreign Language courses in Iraqi universities. The lack of noteworthy advances in translation teaching and the implementation of didactic techniques is the result of an imbalance between the program of French departments and the linguistic and didactic skills of the teacher. The interiorization of the target language grammar is one of the principal aims in language didactics. When a translation teacher resorts to an explicit grammar point, does this promote or hinder the interiorization of the grammar? It is necessary that the language and translation teachers pre-service training contains a solid introduction to two metalinguistic models.Despite the increasing number of studies on translation teaching, there is, to our knowledge, no study, especially in Iraq, on didactics of French-Arabic translation to the foreign language learners which could let them acquire translation skills. This work is important for the Iraqi academic system because there was no in-depth study on this matter before. It is necessary for the creation of French- Arabic translation departments in Iraqi universities. Our initiative includes the introduction of the new translation methods in Iraq as the DMA (Defining Matrix Analysis). This work particularly tackles the linguistic difficulties in translation using translations of Iraqi learners at the universities of Baghdad and Al-Mustansiriyah. With this in mind, we conducted a survey among teachers of French and students of these universities. The purpose of this work is a reflection which aims to: Entrain the teacher to make linguistic analysis which will help them to become aware of the functioning of their language (in this case Arabic) and the differences of functioning between their language and the source language or the target language (in this case French). This analysis must focus on the functioning of the language and not on the learning or the comparison of the metalanguage or of a linguistic or grammatical theory, even if the tutor himself must have a consistent knowledge of linguistic theories.Make teachers capable of discovering the contradictory, often violent, debates that the traductologie can supply them with the tools that allow them to adopt a critical attitude within these debates. Instruct teachers to build a translation method with a relatively precise protocol that defines the different steps. Teach them to justify the method they have chosen
