Abstract:
The purposes of this work are to examine the development and functions of the church court which came to be known as the presbytery during the late sixteenth century and during the early seventeenth century in Scotland, as well as providing a more readily accessible primary source for further studies within the area. The development of a presbyterian polity in Scotland during the sixteenth century is attested to by the surviving records of its kirk sessions, presbyteries, synods and general assemblies. This study is concerned primarily with the record of the St. Andrews presbytery; it was among the first established, and its importance as the presbytery of which Andrew Melville was a member and in which he had significant influence marks it as a church court of unusual interest and marks its records as a valuable source for the study of the development of presbyteries. The introduction surveys the historical background and the evolution of church courts along with the extant records of the earliest presbyteries. Specific attention is given to the St. Andrews record and its condition, history and characteristics. Further analysis of the responsibilities of the presbytery is included along with comparisons to other contemporary records and the relationships between the presbytery and other ecclesiastical judicatories, as well as the effects of changing political circumstances. Textual notes are supplied as is a complete index of subjects, persons, and places.

Abstract:
The focus for this research project was to explore the development of human trafficking mercy ministries within South Coast Presbytery. South Coast Presbytery consists of 21 churches belonging to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), a Christian denomination with member churches throughout the United States. The study was conducted following a constructivist paradigm with a PCA church belonging to South Coast Presbytery to determine the role of the church and the presbytery in addressing human trafficking through the development of mercy ministries. Interviews were conducted with 11 church members. Five major themes emerged from analysis of the interviews: 1) Effects of the existence of human trafficking on participants; 2) The role of the church/presbytery in addressing human trafficking; 3) Service provision to victims of human trafficking; 4) Partnerships with outside agencies; and 5) Ministry development in South Coast Presbytery. An action plan was developed based on the following subthemes: raising awareness, teaming up, the need for specialists, and the need for oversight. The action plan includes the following: the development of a presentation to raise awareness, plans to visit each church of South Coast Presbytery to promote a shared vision, and building a database of available church resources to link with needs identified by service providers in the community.

Jordaan, Gabriel Jacobus. "History of the Dutch Reformed Church mission in Sekhukhuneland and church development 1875-1994." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24506.

Full text
Abstract:
The first chapter deals with the concept of mission history, the choice of research method, the phases of mission work in Sekhukhuneland and the establishment of the different congregations in the Presbytery of Burger. The second chapter contains the story of the Pedi and their country, as well as that of other groups like the Swazi and the Ndebele. From Chapter 3 the pioneering mission work of evangelists and missionaries is described. The role that evangelist Phillipus Mantsene played since 1875 until his death in 1915, as well as his supporters, Rev and Mrs AP Burger, laid the foundation for the involvement of the Transvaal Vrouesendingvereniging, which was established on 15th November 1905. This led to the calling of Rev and Mrs AJ Rousseau, who pioneered the first mission station in Sekhukhuneland, called BURGER, which was officially opened in 1929 (Chapter 8). This is followed by a description of the monumental work done by missionary Jacobus Murray Louw at Maandagshoek Mission Station from 1st April 1944 to January 1962. The first black missionary for this area, Rev EM Phatudi, was ordained with him on 27th March 1943 at Mphahlele, and for a few years the two worked together in Sekhukhuneland. Phatudi’s mother, who was the daughter of the late Kgoši Sekhukhune and his father, chief Mmutle III, saw to it that he became a special person in the history of the DRC Mission. He was one of the great leaders of the NGKA, as will be seen in Chapter 10. Since partnership is the theme that dominates in this research, ample space is given to the work of evangelists in the history of the DRC’s support mission in Sekhukhuneland. They were the missionaries’ partners in establishing the Kingdom of God among the Pedi, Swazi and Ndebele of Sekhukhuneland. With the help of Rev MJ Mankoe who served in the congregation of Burger (Chapter 26), I have been able to paint several life-sketches of the early pioneering evangelists who worked diligently and under difficult circumstances, shoulder to shoulder with the missionaries (Chapter 11). The history of each of the mission stations which functioned in Sekhukhuneland is dealt with in Chapters 12 to 14. The missionaries who pioneered these stations and their co-workers made a major contribution to the growth of the mission church and the forming of the Presbytery of Burger. The history of each of these mission stations, as well as the different congregations resulting from these stations, is described. The time came for consolidating the borders and the placing of black ministers. This was the work of the Planning Commission of the Presbytery of Burger in 1965 and 1966. Chapters 16 to 22 describe the borders, different wards and names of the congregations. The strategy behind this was to ensure that the missionaries, white and black, could occupy equal posts. Once this was completed, a new phase of partnership came into being, as described in Chapters 24 to 30. During this time the phasing out of evangelists took place, as is dealt with in Chapter 31. The two legs that carried missionary work up to this stage became weaker and weaker. Firstly, evangelists left or became full ministers, and secondly the need for a white minister or white missionary fell away. It has also been necessary to describe the circumstances, experiences, views and contributions made by missionaries to prepare the step-out and take-over stages of the phasing-out period from Church-Mission partnership towards full independence and Church-Church partnership. In Chapter 33 a bird’s eye view is taken of the phases of partnership in the DRC’s mission work in Sekhukhuneland. One has to conclude that the circumstances and conditions of the members of the NGKA were harsh. They were struggling against poverty, difficult living conditions, sickness and unemployment. The endeavour for unity among churches, the great topics of church growth and the development of their church to full financial independence could not receive their full attention. In conclusion, I reflect on post-1994 developments in a wider context, based on the study of the previous phases. I also look at the DRC since 1994, asking whether the DRC is still serious about mission work and the mission call. Another chapter was added to reflect on partnership, asking whether this was the answer to problems and tensions. A historical journey since Whitby (1947) is taken and the role the Ecumenical Movements have played since then in the young churches in South Africa is summarized. The great concepts of missio Dei, kerygma, diakonia and koinonia are evaluated in the light of partnership and obedience which was the theme of Whitby, but also the theme that caused continual dialogue, especially amongst the Evangelicals and the Ecumenical Movements.

Galbraith, Douglas. "Team ministry : an examination of the Prestbytery of Edinburgh's Craigmillar experiment, 1970-1977." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13619.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent changes in church and society have challenged the traditional ministry pattern of one-minister-one-parish. An arrangement which is being offered with increasing frequency as a possible alternative is team ministry, in which more than one minister - or ministers and (usually) full-time lay people - share in ministry to a congregation or group of congregations. Taking as starting-point a team ministry established in Craigmillar, Edinburgh, by the Presbytery of Edinburgh in 1970, the thesis explores the possibilities and problems inherent in this pattern of ministry. After an analysis of the situation which has brought about an increase in team work in Scotland and England, as well as in the Uniting Church in Australia, a detailed description is offered of the team based principally on two Church of Scotland congregations in Craigmillar, a housing estate to the south-east of Edinburgh. A comparison is then made with other corporate ministries in Scotland in existence at about the same time - in Greenock, Livingston, Drumchapel, Paisley and in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The discussion about team ministry is then widened by an account of proposals made by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland's "Committee of Forty" (1971-78) of which the author was a member, and by a survey of reports, consultations and published literature relevant to the topic. In the light of this, team ministry is now explored under five headings - the potentially stronger role of the team in equipping and leading the congregation as well as attendant problems; advantages of team ministry in bringing the congregation and the wider community more effectively face to face; matters relating to the health of the team, including the questions of accountability and leadership; and forms of education which will better prepare ministers and others to work together in a team.

Abstract:
Edward Fisher’s The Marrow of Modern Divinity, first published in 1645 in England, was republished in Scotland in 1718 by Church of Scotland minister James Hog, quickly becoming the focal point of what would be known as the Marrow controversy.  Rival parties developed within the Church of Scotland, the smaller of which were the supporters of The Marrow, or the Marrow brethren.  In the context of the controversy over the book they formulated a defence of it, with particular reference to the doctrines of the atonement, saving faith, and the gospel offer: this was the Scottish expression of Marrow theology. Leading figures among the Marrow brethren included Thomas Boston, Ebenezer Riccaltoun, and Ebenezer Erskine.  In 1733, little more than a decade later, Ebenezer Erskine and several other Church of Scotland ministers separated from the church over the issue of patronage, forming the Associate Presbytery, the beginning of a new Scottish Presbyterian and Reformed denomination.  Historians and theologians, particularly in the 20th century, have suggested that Marrow theology was characteristic of the Secession church movement; however, no thorough examination and analysis of existing historical evidence (ecclesiastical documents and the published sermons and theological writings of Secession ministers and theologians) supporting or challenging this claim have been made. This dissertation, based on research conducted through the years 2006-2009, argues there is evidence for both a general or thematic continuity of Marrow theology as expressed in the context of the Scottish Marrow controversy, and, at points, for direct historical dependence on the published works and distinctive theology and language used by the Marrow brethren.

Abstract:
This research study is based on investigating the conflicts between the Church Associations (also called This research study is based on investigating the conflicts between the Church Associations (also called iimanyano) of the UPCSA. These associations are essentially a group of people who gather together to achieve certain aims and objectives in serving God within the Church.anyano) of the UPCSA. These associations are essentially a group of people who gather together to achieve certain aims and objectives in serving God within the Church. The iimanyano are normally identified by means of a specific uniform, even though the UPCSA (as with the reformed Church tradition) does not generally wear a uniform. The uniform of the iimanyano therefore does not have any specific origin. However, Chapter One of this study traces the purpose of the iimanyano in that it was formed to evangelise and reach out to black people within a cultural ethos. The research embarks on narrative, qualitative interviews and follows a participatory approach in discovering the problems that led to the iimanyano deviating from their original focus. In Chapter Two, the amalgamation of The Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa with the Reformed Presbyterian Church of South Africa in 1999 is discussed. (The emerging of these two Churches formed the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa.) The process of joining the iimanyano of the two former (PCSA and RPCSA) Churches resulted in dissatisfaction and caused several grievances. These tensions of the iiimanyano are a threat to the union of the UPCSA. The study investigates through narrative research why the problems still persist. In Chapter Three, the narratives of the co-researchers in the context of the Presbytery of Tshwane are presented. These helped to identify certain experiences that the remaining iimanyano in the UPCSA denomination still encounter. It is further indicated that some underlining issues may have been rushed or underestimated by the Special Commission on Union. An interesting observation is that the tension is mostly referred to by the black members of the former two churches. Furthermore, some members are suspicious of any outside influence perpetuating the problem. In Chapter Four the struggles within the body of Christ whereby the uniform issue among the women is discussed. In Chapter Five, a narrative reflection on the research findings and recommendations to the associations of the UPCSA are given.

Huntley, Heather Maurine. "Taming debauchery : church discipline in the Presbytery of St Andrews and the American colonies of New Jersey and New York, 1750-1800." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13663.

Abstract:
Creating moralistic societies was a concern of the churches and the governments of Scotland and the American colonies of New York and New Jersey in the eighteenth century. However, church and state relations in Scotland and the American colonies were dissimilar and the differences manifested themselves in the various approaches taken by each body to suppress the immoral behaviour that existed in both countries. By examining the disciplinary procedures and cases in the parishes of the Presbytery of St Andrews and the Presbyterian churches in the colonies of New York and New Jersey, these divergences emerge and illuminate the relationship between church and state. The Church of Scotland was recognized as the established church by the state and was allowed to implement its own Presbyterian system of government and discipline according to its ecclesiastical doctrines and theological beliefs. The state utilized its legal systems to punish and correct immoral behaviour. In Scotland, the two systems had defined boundaries and complemented one another in their efforts to suppress immorality. However, not only did the American colonies lack a centralized state until 1776, but the colonies also lacked an established church. Alternatively, each colony had its own governing bodies, judicial systems, and a variety of church denominations. The Presbyterian Church, one of the many churches in the colonies of New York and New Jersey, utilised a Presbyterian system of ecclesiastical discipline in order to supplement the judicial systems' attempts to suppress immorality within the colonies.

Abstract:
The assignment of this diploma thesis followed previous analysis of the regions of Valašsko and Haná. The outcome of this analysis showed several problems. One of the most serious problems is a lack of spiritual and liturgical sites in the area of Zlín. The analysis and synthesis preceding this diploma thesis are enclosed. The analysis of sites of pilgrimage in the area of Zlín was one of the studied subjects. The assignment of the diploma thesis was created using a combination of discovered data – design of the site of pilgrimage including a church and spiritual centre. This building is to support local community, christian religion and rehabilitation of the present site of pilgrimage Svatá voda – Kaménka. This diploma thesis deals with the design of a church as a site of pilgrimage, with facilities and café for the public. It also deals with the design of a spiritual centre with weekly spiritual programme. There are also four flats designed as accommodation for clergymen. The designed buildings are located 250 metres away form the present site of pilgrimage Svatá voda.

Cox, Joanne Heather. "Challenging leadership : Mission-Shaped Presbyters in Methodist Fresh Expressions." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3527/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mission-Shaped Church report by the Church of England prompted the Methodist and Church of England in the UK to respond to the dislocation being felt between the inherited model of Church, and the missiological challenges of the twenty-first century. The most significant ecumenical development arising from the initial report was the formation of the Fresh Expressions initiative, whose sole task was to release leaders and communities to found churches for the ‘unchurched.’ Examples of Anglican fresh expressions are much researched. In this thesis, I explore how the Methodist Church in Britain has responded to the leadership questions raised by contemporary culture, and do this by examining ethnographically three case studies of Methodist fresh expressions. I argue against the assumption that Methodism is incompatible with the emerging church worldview, arguing that Methodist people have much to offer to the debate. The main finding of this thesis is that leaders of fresh expressions and leadership styles often create tensions between a presbyter's self understanding of vocation within the Methodist tradition and expectations placed upon them. There are irreconcilable differences between the vision and values of a 'fresh expression', and the requirements of the local circuit or district. The discernment of specific gifts for pioneering ministries places pressure on the stationing system and on the understanding of what a presbyter is stationed to achieve. On account of the cultural assumptions of postmodern Britain, leaders are faced with the challenges of cultural accommodation, without necessarily having the tools with which to make such decisions. I argue that there is a need for fresh expressions to be denominationally distinctive before they can be distilled into something new. The thesis also reflects the costliness of research to an ordained minister embarking on practical theology. This thesis exposes leaders as people who are highly motivated but with the potential of being highly flawed. It presents difficult questions before the Methodist Church in light of the collected evidence and reflects on the difficulties faced by the whole church as it continues to respond to the challenges of mission and discipleship in Britain today.

Shields, Thomas Joseph. "The gift of assurance : the presbyter in modern Roman Catholic theology." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30752.

Full text
Abstract:
From a conversation between selected authors and documents from the Roman Catholic Magisterium, this thesis suggests that the Roman Catholic Church is one who is given by God to be an assurance of faith to the church. In the first part of the thesis the author reflects on the image of the ordained priest as leader of the community and considers the questions raised in the recent debate as to the identity of the ordained as acting in the person of Christ and in the person of the church. Also considered is the identity of the ordained as emerging from the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church especially in relation to the document ‘Pastores Dabo Vobis’ of John Paul II. The definition of the presbyter as distinct from that of bishop is also explored in relationship to the parish and the local bishop. In the second part of the thesis, under the title of ‘Gift and Return’, the author examines some recent theological theories which underline the sacraments as encounters between God and humanity and show how they are participations in the life of God. Recent theological work concerning the post modern challenge to an understanding of how God and the human are mutually present to one another is also undertaken. The final part draws the first two parts together, again with reference to assurance, authenticity, and authority but this time with explicit reference to the three offices of priest, prophet, and pastor. The conclusion is that the presbyter as the gift of assurance is a model that can complement and further explain other images used of the ordained priesthood in general and the presbyterate in particular, such as shepherd and steward.

Abstract:
The content of the diploma thesis was an architectural study of a sacral building in Brno - Líšeň. The subject of the study was the elaboration of an ideological design of a sacral complex, which consisted of a church and a parish. The main operator of the whole complex will be the Salesian community, whose background is in close proximity to the area. The basic idea of the design was to design a spiritual place, which in its form conveys clear information about the use of the object and at the same time supports the development of ideas of the Salesian community. It is a structure that conveys the mission itself, not by one element, but by a set of several elements that together create a story, vision, mission. The ideological solution in this case thus becomes an equilateral triangle, which symbolizes the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. With its dominant vertical direction facing the sky, the object symbolically points to the spiritual path and self-realization. The given area is solved as a complex, the elements of which complement each other and thus create a harmonious whole. The design creates a space for both liturgical celebrations in the interior and exterior, which is used by the outdoor presbytery, which is complemented by residential stairs. These elements are intended to encourage residents to meet and establish friendly relations.

Abstract:
Church of Christ in Japan began their ministry among the Japanese colonzer at Korea in 1904. They could build up Chosen Presbytery in 1915 and continue their work until 1941, when were united to United Church of Christ in Japan Chosen Parish. They had about 16 churches and 2000 members. With a few exceptions, they could not either evangelize among the Koreans or work as neighbors of Koreans. They could not be more than church of colonizers in most cases. After the war they had to retreat from liberated Korea but the chapels that they had left could become the ground for rebuilding or starting some Korean churches.

Abstract:

Mackrell-Hey, Langley Adrian James. "Effective oversight of Methodist Fresh Expressions : an exploration of how fresh expressions are challenging the practice, discipline, and ecclesiology of the Methodist Church, with specific reference to the task of presbyteral oversight." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11800/.

Abstract:
The British Methodist Church defines oversight as the means by which churches remain true to their calling. Its presbyters are charged with upholding Constitution, Practice, and Discipline or ‘CPD’. This research employs a combination of Practical Theology methods to examine the challenge of applying CPD to fresh expressions (forms of Church established for the benefit of those who are not yet members of a local church). It offers three original insights in regard to the tension between mission-praxis and ecclesiological discipline. First, it provides empirical evidence to support the anecdotal observation that not all fresh expressions are authentic in that they lack ecclesial intent. A combination of factors inhibited this. New churches can be formed when twelve Methodist members unite. Current legislation allows members of the Church to belong to only one society, meaning that leaders face the conflict of leaving their parent church if they are to form a new church. Second, membership mediated an unequal power balance between fresh expressions and their parent churches, undermining progress towards achieving a ‘mixed economy’. This situation was confounded by the fact that newcomers to fresh expressions viewed Methodist membership as an institutional construct and requirement, rather than an opportunity for spiritual renewal. Third, the Methodist Church policy that encourages presbyters to apply CPD with a ‘light-touch’ in respect of how its disciplines are applied to new work, risks inconsistency. This thesis invites the Church to find a way of identifying which of its fresh expressions have genuine ecclesial intent, reflect on how membership is impacting their ecclesial formation, and widen its existing legislation so that a Methodist member may belong to two local societies at the same time. This, combined with additional District oversight, would remove some significant barriers to ecclesial formation.

The fundamental aim of the present research is to examine the question of metamorphoses and emancipations in Catholic Presbyter s identity in Modern times. It takes for basis the concept of identity proposed by the Social Psychologist Antonio da Costa Ciampa as well as the Social Philosopher Jurgen Habermas theories. To attain this purpose, it becomes indispensable to undertake that the constriction of the of the identity of the catholic presbyter cannot be shaped without the ties of sociability, what has to be understood as an inter-subjective force that creates a sense of pertaining to the society; to accept that modern society is especially guided by post-conventional postulates whose conflicts are not essentially regulated by the religion or by the tradition, prevailing systemic interests and not the general or universal ethic principles; that in the course of the Catholic Church history, the presbiteral identity has already suffered many transformations, according to conjunctural-historic necessities; that the exercise of greater personal autonomy by the presbyter leads to greater self realization, liberty of choice, personal responsibility and the consciousness of a leading life; that nowadays, at the same time the presbyter feels himself as the security that the Catholic Church mastership and the society assured him and feels himself without definition, without limits, without content or purpose, having to build a complex identity. The research is based on the following procedures: in a first time, a bibliographical survey that seeks combine conceptions on identity proposed by the Catholic Church mastership, departing from the Second Vatican Council and also a research and reflection on presbiteral identity proposed by catholic theologians, psychologists and catholic seminary educators, problematizing with theories proposed by the Social psychologists Antonio da Costa Ciampa, as well as the theories proposed by the Social Philosopher Jurgen Habermas. In a second part, it shows an analysis of four presbyters lives trying to show each of them is trying to build this presbiteral identity in Modern times

Abstract:
The bishop holds an inherent authority from the apostolic succession, the fullness of the sacrament of orders, the multiple power that canon law bestows upon him. The authority of the bishops in Africa is reinforced by the distinctiveness of their status, whether it is at the social, cultural or political level. They are hardly disputable. Presbyters always have to refer to their bishop in the exercise of their ministry, no matter the size of that ministry, and that because of the legal binding of the incardination. This guarantees the governance of the priests, the hierarchy and the efficiency of diocesan administration. However, the bishop’s authority doesn’t always prevail because of the tribalism, the abuse of power of certain priests and the disobedience that puts a strain on the authority. It must be noted that certain bishops also abuse of their authority, violate in impunity the ecclesiastical norms and fail to exercise their responsibilities to the priests’ detriment. Therefore, it is necessary to return to the importance of service in the exercise of the episcopal ministry and to reinforce the rigorous application of universal law of the Catholic Church. If the Supreme authority of the Church is willing to manifest its evolution by severely sanctioning the bishops who fail their mission, there will be a true opportunity for change in order, for the ecclesiastical institution who faces the diocesan realities in Africa, to advance more largely in terms of control, caution, sanction and protection of the rights for both the priests and the laity

Abstract:

Abstract:
Medieval Hebrew-Catalan Heritage, not represented in school curricula, is a pending issue in our schools and in heritage education. We set forth in this study a teaching model for its transmission among Elementary School pupils, based on the collection of Medieval Hebrew-Catalan illuminated manuscripts. Illuminated manuscripts are key elements for intangible assets transmission from the period in which they were conceived, as we pretend to have demonstrated through the example of Gerona Beatus and Mozarabic culture. In this respect, we have at our disposal unique primary sources that could be used for Hebrew- Catalan tangible and intangible heritage teaching: the made in Catalonia collection of illuminated manuscripts designed to Jew Passover celebration, which are an example of the educational vocation of illuminated manuscripts, as well as of the opportunity of its use for understanding a culture and a special period. An added advantage in using the Catalan Haggadot for Hebrew-Catalan history teaching is the possibility to fill the gap in archaeological rests and documentation caused by the destruction and fragmentation of the Jewish Heritage in our territories, providing us a visual view of Catalan medieval ghettos. We run however into serious difficulties while using this legacy in Elementary School. Ignorance about Catalan Jewish heritage and about general Jewish culture, as shared unawareness about general religious principles as well, gives a confusing image of Catalan Jewish heritage. And secondly, the difficulties of working with primary sources should be noted. Neither the Hebrew language nor the medieval writing are understandable by today’s common elementary pupils, which should provoke the need for an adapted edition of the Haggadot of Pessah. But moreover, ancient iconography generates a total lack of understanding among elementary students as well: old images must be explained and adapted. For these reasons, in our research, after analyzing the educational possibilities of the illuminations of the Gerona Beatus, we establish the bases to didactic model conceived to Catalan Jewish heritage transmission. In this sense, we explore social sciences teaching strategies, and we also investigate tales and images as educational tools, understanding them as the basis of our project. In order to develop our teaching model, we start with a preliminary analysis of the Catalan Haggadot, focused on transmission of Jewish Catalan Medieval heritage, which sets the guidelines of the different issues that have to be represented in our project, as well of its visual features. We lay the foundations of a new educational model based on a tale and on images, defining its main target and determining its contents, and we eventually report its visual and textual description. We finally proceed to the experimentation on the educational model and its assessment, conducted by means of focus group. Thanks to the results of different discussion groups, the research’s targets have been validated, while valuable indications have been provided to improve the created model: it has been shown that the model, despite being suitable for the purposes that have been defined, must be completed and extended to increase its scope and to provide tools for classroom work. Through our research we can eventually conclude that Catalan Jewish heritage helps to highlight the city cultural diversity, and we can note its inclusion in elementary classroom as an unique opportunity to discover the past of the city, and to perform an intensive teaching of diversity and the right to difference, which should make our model going beyond the teaching of heritage to establish itself as a tool for the growth of students in critical and ethical values.

Abstract:
The Presbytery of Zimbabwe is faced with a very serious challenge of Tribalism/Racism and this is affecting the general membership. This research seeks to call for a paradigm shift in interpreting the gospel by a way of embracing everyone as equal partners. The dividing walls in terms of tribe/race have been in existence for too long and they must be pulled down. The church must be on the fore front in carrying the beacon of hope and to minister effectively to all those who believe. The research exposes the traumatic experiences that are caused by tribalism/racism in the church and how the affected respond as they seek to worship God in a challenging environment. Some of the affected stop coming to church and move their membership to other denominations that are accommodative. Those that remain in the church find it extremely difficult to be actively involved in the life and work of the church. This therefore affects their growth spiritually and worshiping God ends up being meaningless. The thesis explored the Shepherding model by Charles V. Gerkin to be used as a means of offering Pastoral care to the traumatized. In essence the traumatized need healing more than anything so as to restore their ‘dignity’ and ‘worthiness’ in the eyes of both God and the community of believers. The model includes counseling as one seeks to journey closely with the affected as well as the perpetrators. The Bible has been used as the basic book for this discussion as the author sought to show how the church ought to be in terms of existence within the community. The church has to stand up to her true calling of preaching the gospel of reconciliation. The image of the church has been discussed extensively as a way of bringing understanding to what the church represents. If the evil practice of tribalism/racism is to be allowed to continue in the church, ultimately the existence and relevance of the gospel will be questioned.

This paper mainly discusses the set up and development of the The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT)’s “Hakka Mission Presbytery”. Since the 1980s, a group of pastors promoted the establishment of Hakka Presbytery. It was established mainly for missionary and the mission had autonomy. Through a lot of discussion, literature and oral interviews during the process, we understand the history and evolution of “Hakka Mission Presbytery” as well as what are the consideration and reasons for churches in Hakka area to join or not to join the Hakka Presbytery. Presbyterian Church came to Taiwan in 1865 when Dr. James L. Maxwell started the mission in the southern while in the northern part it was started from Canadian Rev. George Leslie Mackay’s missionary in 1872 at Danshui. Ministers in the South and the North declared their missions and management in their parish. At the beginning when the missionaries came to Taiwan, they studied the Hokkien language which was the language most Taiwan population spoken at that time in order to communicate and preach the Christian message. Southern and northern missionaries also visited the Hakka area for missionary, but they rarely deliberately learned the Hakka language to preach. Most of them still used the Hokkien language for the main missionary language. In order to increase the missionary resources of the Hakka area, since the 1950s there were priests organized Hakka missionary units as well as translated the Bible into the Hakka language. Until the 1980s, PCT set up a “Hakka Mission Committee” responsible for the entire Taiwan Hakka missionary work and for contact with each mission and handled related matters. The Presbyterian Church used “Presbytery” as efforts of the main ministry structure to manage Church property and personnel. Some Hakka priests believed that only by setting up Hakka Presbytery could start Hakka missionary work, so they started the preparation and organization of seminars, briefings etc. mainly in Hsinchu Presbytery (ranged included Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung) Hakka areas. They convinced various churches in Hakka area to join and set up a Hakka Presbytery. In 2000, there were only 13 churches joined 15 churches failed to comply with the provisions. Firstly they set up the “Hakka Presbytery”, in which 12 churches were transferred from Hsinchu Presbytery and a Mino Church was transferred from Kaohsiung Presbytery. In 2007, Church numbers increased to 15 and was upgraded to a “Hakka Mission Presbytery”. In 2004 Hakka Mission Committee’s population survey report showed there were 49 places in Taiwan where the Hakka population accounted for 50% of the population. It was a great gap compared with the numbers of Hakka churches. In this article we will explore the factors of the church to join or not to join the mission. The findings of this paper have three contributions. First, through literature and oral history interview we understand the missionary of the PCT’s Hakka Mission and Hakka Mission Presbytery history. Secondly, we clarify the current status and problems of Hakka Mission Presbytery and the mission regardless of ethnicity. Third, under the influence social changes, Hakka culture (language) is difficult to be used and presented in churches of Hakka areas.
