Abstract Sociological scholarship on social movements has shed important light on the role of knowledge production for processes of collective action and mobilization. However, much of this research overlooks the question of how movement-based knowledge emerges from within institutionalized settings of formal education. Drawing on a qualitative case study, this article examines the repertoire of knowledge-building practices mobilized from within a state-based system of adult education in francophone Belgium. Building on social movement theory, it is shown how formalized sites of adult educatio

Honneth views the presence of three forms of recognition - love, rights, and solidarity - as necessary conditions not only for a just society, but also for a society in which human beings can realize their potential and experience life as being good. Abstract:
Abstract This edited volume is devoted to the analysis of practices of transnational solidarity in response to the various crises affecting Europe, especially the economic and refugee crises. Its aim is to present new insights into existing informal groups, at the grassroots, geared at furthering transnational solidarity in three thematic areas (disability, unemployment and immigration) and builds on extensive fieldwork in eight European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland and the UK). The introductory chapter provides an overview of the topic and the related research, discusses conceptual and methodological issues, and presents the structure of the book. It argues that the transnational solidarity work of citizen groups and organisations is strongly shaped by the socio-economic and political context in which they operate, by the action repertoires they promote, the networks of cooperation they are involved in and the experiences and lessons learned by engaged citizens and activists. It argues that in spite of apparent differences tied to contexts, there are a number of similarities in regard to the way transnationally oriented solidarity groups and organisations respond to societal challenges.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 takes up the question of social transformation from the perspective of attitudes, social norms, and patterned behaviours at the everyday level. It examines how these can be altered to reflect a situation in which groups are encountering each other from the moral point of view when, previously, misconceptions, disparaging stereotypes or a history of violence left them harbouring dehumanising images of one another. The chapter presents in-group deliberation as a promising, yet underappreciated, vehicle for the achievement of such actor transformations. This claim is supported with reference to case studies showing that public sphere deliberations among like members are just as, if not more, consequential in fostering acceptance of outsiders than deliberations among unlike members, especially when antipathy defines group relations. What characterises such deliberations is the presence of ‘integrative leaders’, that is, individuals who take a leading role in persuading their group to develop a more enlarged and considered understanding of its relationship with another.

This chapter presents the interdisciplinary framework of the book and its core argument linking issues of racism and religion--particularly heteropatriarchal Christianity--in the cultural support for gender violence. It argues that the conjoined presence of religion, anti-black racism, and sexual violence against women in American history of slavery and colonialism compels a similarly transnational exploration of inspiration from Africana activists and scholars to address U.S. gender violence. A methodological overview describes the book’s theoretical foundations in feminist and womanist studies, and how tools of ethnography, anthropology, and Christian theo-ethics inform the its unconventional narrative approach. The U.S.-based analysis features snapshots of the author’s encounters with leaders and their contexts, not a broad survey or comparison of gender violence in Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil.

The Covid-19 pandemic has generated a one-in-a-generation challenge upon the EU, consisting of immediate danger for life and health, savings and jobs of its citizens, as well as for the stability and proper functioning of political and legal systems of its Member States. The manner in which the EU as a whole reacted to such sudden and grave challenge is by no means indicative of its political and legal-constitutional substance, and, consequently, of its capacity to subsist in its present form or to develop further. Abstract Among the stochastic tools and risk analysis techniques, ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) concept has proved to be the most influential guidance regarding the development of regulations and standards of the offshore industry in terms of risk assessment and consequently of equipment integrity.
