Abstract:
McTaggart's famous argument that the A-series is contradictory is vitiated by an unsatisfactory conceptualization of tenses which can be corrected by making explicit their relational structure. This leads into a much sharper formulation of his apparent contradiction, and defusing this apparent contradiction requires a careful distinction between tensed and tenseless descriptions of thoughts. As a result the ‘unreality’ of tense turns out to rest on the fact that tensed descriptions of temporal facts do not capture their identity. This ‘metaphysical’ priority of tenseless over tensed descriptions of time is, however, counterbalanced by an ‘epistemological’ priority of tensed thoughts over tenseless thoughts: a conception of tense which requires a form of self-consciousness turns out to be an essential ingredient of rational thought.

Abstract:
The article aims to answer the question: is there any correlation between the temporality and the genre affiliation of media texts? And, if it is a case: how does it manifest itself in the structure of media texts? The research is carried out on the material of modern frequency genres selected from German and Ukrainian newspapers. In the study we use the Сhi-Square-Test and the coefficient of Chuprov. The analysis revealed a correlation between the temporality and the genre affiliation in both media cultures. In news genres the past tense dominates, the present tense is less used and occasionally the forms of the future tense occur. In media text-interviews, on the contrary, the present tense dominates, the past and future tense forms are less represented. In the analytical genre the present tense dominates, followed by verb forms in past and future tenses. In the structure of German and Ukrainian news genres the following algorithm can be traced: in the lead – present (frequently), past (less frequently) tenses, in the body – past, present, and future tenses, in the final part – past, present, and future tenses. The interview-texts are characterized by the following sequence of tense use: in the lead – present and past tenses, in the body – present and past tenses, in the final part – present, past, and future tenses. For the analytical genre, the following algorithm is inherent: in the lead – present and past tenses, in the body – present, past, and future tenses. According to the statistical calculations, statistically significant results were obtained for the past tense in the German news items, for the present tense – in the German text-interviews, and for the future tense – in the Ukrainian text-interviews.

This research endeavor aims to present the English Pedagogical Grammar Teaching, discussing the use and form of the present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses, and the regular verbs’ past participle and irregular verbs’ past participle. The study is based on two main assumptions that cause difficulties for learners of English, namely, the forms of verbs and the difficulty of distinguishing between the present from the past simple tenses. The study discusses the use of deductive and inductive approaches in English pedagogical grammar teaching, and evaluates these approaches from A-factor and E-factor description. Overall results of the analysis show that the deductive and inductive approaches are helpful in language teaching and learning. And the forms of verbs and differences between the present and past simple tense made English learning difficult. By using appropriate teaching methods, English grammar can be taught and learned in an efficient way.

Abstract:
Tenses are one of the vital essentials of grammar. Command over the English language demands a thorough understanding of tenses. Although much research has been conducted on the teaching of the English language in the context of Pakistan, little has been dug out about the problems faced by students regarding the applications of tenses. This paper investigates the perceptions of both students and teachers of the difficulties in the applications of tenses facing ESL learners. Data were collected from 150 students and 30 teachers of government high schools through a structured questionnaire. The results of the study showed that the students are confronted with many difficulties in the application of tenses consisting of using future indefinite tense instead of the simple present tense regarding its use for scheduled future activities, using present continuous tense instead of a simple present for the permanent situation in the present, using future indefinite tense for planned future activities and so on. The results also indicated that the difficulties were caused by inappropriate teaching methodology, lack of speaking environment inside the classroom, translations from the mother tongue into English and vice versa, much focus on rules and teaching sentences and expressions as isolated units rather than an integral part of the discourse. In the light of the results, it is recommended that while teaching tenses, teachers should focus both on rules and applications of tenses. English should be taught more as a language than as a mere body of rules. Moreover, teachers should be properly trained in teaching tenses.

Hassan, Fakhri. ""Grammatical controversy on the temporality of the imperfect tense in the Qur’ānic text" Is it Mu’rab (declinable) or Mabnī (indeclinable)?" University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6601.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA<br>This research discusses the temporality of Al-Fi’l Al-Moḍāri’ (present tense) in Arabic in terms of structure and case endings. It also focuses on the time of the imperfect tense and how it is affected by the Adawāt (particles) and justification as well as the meaning, context and the purpose of the sentence. The study also investigates the controversial issues on finding a standardized definition of the actual imperfect tense in order to distinguish it from the outwardly one. It also investigates the changes which the imperfect tense undergoes when preceded by particles and how they change the case endings from Mabnī (Indicative) into Mu’rab apocopate (to be Jussive or Subjunctive). Another focus is investigating the reason why the tense of the verb that comes after particles of negation, prohibition, justification and denial is always imperfect not perfect or future, regardless of the context and the purpose of the text, and the reason as to why this rule applies to all Qur'ānic verses which contradict this rule when being parsed. In addition, it uses semiotics to explain the imperfect tense in the Qur'ānic verses and investigates the effectiveness of applying abstention and assembly to distinguish between the tense and it's meaning in the Qur'ānic text. This can help to determine the actual time of the tense in the Qur'ānic text which in turn helps to parse the imperfect tense correctly and to justify why there is a case ending which contradicts the grammar rules. The correct parsing of the imperfect tense, including indicative, subjunctive and jussive, will pave the way for more attempts to rectify the interpretation of the Qur'ānic verses which create controversy. This can be achieved by presenting the verses which contradict the rules of parsing, making hypotheses, analyzing them and then parsing them in a logical way utilizing an analytical approach.

Abstract:
In this thesis I attempt to model, that is, computationally reproduce, the natural transmission (i.e. inflectional regularities) of twenty present tense Amharic verbs (i.e. triradicals beginning with consonants) as used by the language’s speakers. I root my approach in the linguistic theory of network morphology (NM) and model it using the DATR evaluator. In Chapter 1, I provide an overview of Amharic and discuss the fidel as an abugida, the verb system’s root-and-pattern morphology, and how radicals of each lexeme interacts with prefixes and suffixes. I offer an overview of NM in Chapter 2 and DATR in Chapter 3. In both chapters I draw attention to and help interpret key terms used among scholars doing work in both fields. In Chapter 4 I set forth my full theory, along with notation, for generating the paradigms of twenty present tense Amharic verbs that follow four different patterns. Chapter 5, the final chapter, contains a summary and offers several conclusions. I provide the DATR output in the Appendix. In writing, my main hope is that this project will make a contribution, however minimal or sizeable, that might advance the field of Amharic studies in particular and (computational) linguistics in general.

Abstract:
Most Brazilian students learning English face difficulty when studying thepresent perfect. It is one of the most challenging aspects of the Englishlanguage for Portuguese speakers due to the similar form with a divergentsemantic value. The Brazilian Portuguese present perfect forces iteration andthe student automatically transfers the same meaning when translating anEnglish sentence literally. Brazilian learners get confused about when and inwhat situations to use the English present perfect and frequently are not able todistinguish it from the simple past use. This study is comprised of two parts.First, a comparative study was done to investigate which Portuguese tensetranslators of famous literary books consider to be equivalent to the Englishpresent perfect according to the message which is being conveyed. Thedatabase used was the bidirectional parallel corpus of English and PortugueseCOMPARA. Second, textbooks developed to teach English in Brazil wereanalyzed in order to verify from what perspective students were beinginstructed concerning the present perfect and whether the semantic differencesbetween the two languages were pointed out. According to the translationcorpus, the English present perfect is mostly equivalent to Brazilian Portuguesesimple past. Adverbs are also often needed to express the English presentperfect meaning in Portuguese. The textbooks were found to present poorexplanations and seem not to call the learners’ attention to the source of the problems. Textbooks do not stress the importance of the semantic value and thecontext, and do not call attention to the different meanings between theBrazilian and the English present perfect.

Abstract:
In regarding history as a concept, the foundation of both the critical and the cultural historian relies on the metaphor selected to order the world. The acquisition of knowledge by inquiry, as in the Greek “historia”, is related to the Latin “videre” ( to see), and develops an historical sense which includes the perception of the past, the present, and the future simultaneously. These relationships of time usually move either horizontally as a chronological time line with clear regulations and overlaps; or vertically with the direct impact of a cut or incision that both divides and links at the same time. A ruin is a state of time where, for a moment, all three tenses collide as the past and the future crash into the present. In a ruin both the productions and the destructions of history reveal themselves as an opportunity to recognize the significance and signatures of events and the boundaries enclosing them.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2018: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2018-75792.

Abstract:
The present study aims at analysing the Boussinesq constitutive relation validity in a corner separation flow of a compressor cascade. The Boussinesq constitutive relation is commonly used in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations for turbomachinery design. It assumes an alignment between the Reynolds stress tensor and the zero-trace mean strain-rate tensor. An indicator that measures the alignment between these tensors is used to test the validity of this assumption in a high fidelity large-eddy simulation. Eddy-viscosities are also computed using the LES database and compared. A large-eddy simulation (LES) of a LMFA-NACA65 compressor cascade, in which a corner separation is present, is considered as reference. With LES, both the Reynolds stress tensor and the mean strain-rate tensor are known, which allows the construction of the indicator and the eddy-viscosities. Two constitutive relations are evaluated. The first one is the Boussinesq constitutive relation, while the second one is the quadratic constitutive relation (QCR), expected to render more anisotropy, thus to present a better alignment between the tensors. The Boussinesq constitutive relation is rarely valid, but the QCR tends to improve the alignment. The improvement is mainly present at the inlet, upstream of the corner separation. At the outlet, the correction is milder. The eddy-viscosity built with the LES results are of the same order of magnitude as those built as the ratio of the turbulent kinetic energy k and the turbulence specific dissipation rate ω. They also show that the main impact of the QCR is to rotate the mean strain-rate tensor in order to realign it with the Reynolds stress tensor, without dilating it.

In ASME 2005 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2005-81263.

Full text
Abstract:
Material behavior of short-fiber composites can be found from the fiber orientation distribution function, with the only widely accepted procedure derived from the application of orientation/moment tensors. The use of orientation tensors requires a closure, whereby the higher order tensor is approximated as a function of the lower order tensor thereby introducing additional computational errors. We present material property expectation values computed directly from the fiber orientation distribution function, thereby alleviating the closure problem inherent to orientation tensors. Material properties are computed from statistically independent unidirectional fiber samples taken from the fiber orientation distribution function. The statistical nature of the distribution function is evaluated with Monte-Carlo simulations to obtain approximate stiffness tensors from the underlying unidirectional composite properties. Examples are presented for simple analytical distributions to demonstrate the effectiveness of expectation values and results are compared to properties obtained through orientation tensors. Results yield a value less than 1.5% for the coefficient of variation and suggest that the orientation tensor method for computing material properties is applicable only for the case of non-interacting fibers.

Laflin, Jeremy, and Kurt Anderson. "A Recursive Body-Body Formulation for Reducing the Computational Cost of Pairwise Coulomb Force Computation for Modeling and Simulation of Biopolymers, Using a Multibody Approach to Model Reduction." In ASME 2013 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
This work presents a method for recursively assembling tensor-like quantities that parameterize the charge distribution of rigid bodies, which result from model reduction of biopolymeric systems using an articulated multibody approach. This is done with the goal of reducing the computational cost associated with the pairwise force determination encountered in molecular dynamics simulations. To achieve a linear computational cost complexity of the force determination, with respect to the number of bodies in the system (N), a recursive assembly and disassembly (evaluation) sweep is proposed. This work proposes assembling these tensor quantities (pseudo-inertia tensors), which are associated with the body’s charge distribution, with a method that uses the standard parallel axis theorem to shift these tensors to a common point so they may be summed. This work presents a preliminary numerical example that examines the accuracy of the force and moment computation using a pseudo-inertia tensor resulting after one level of recursive assembly. The Coulomb force and associated moment on a target body due to the assembled body is computed. The test problem approximates a system that is highly negatively or positively charged. The orientation of the bodies that are assembled is varied, along with the distance between the assembly and the target body. The preliminary results presented herein suggest that this is a viable method of efficiently representing the charge distribution of an assembly. The numerical example presented determines the Coulomb force and the associated moment, as a function of distance and the pseudo-inertia tensor. However, the approximation can be used for any force that is of the form 1/rs, where s is any power.

Abstract:
The general framework of the present paper is the modeling of stone work, subject to dynamic loads. In this study, a masonry structure is considered as a collection of rigid blocks, linked together by Coulomb’s type friction laws. We define on such a granular medium, a stress tensor and a macroscopic strain tensor, on an elementary cell. The definition of these tensors allows us to get, locally, an average information on this granular medium.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The approximation of the multidimensional function using the high order tensor and canonical decomposition is considered for the purpose of visualization. Formally, from the standpoint of computational resources (operational memory volume and the time of computation) the canonical decomposition is beyond comparison. However, at present, the main algorithm that calculates the canonical decomposition is based on the Khatri-Rao product, which implies matrization. This circumstance restricts the domain of applicability by tensors of the relatively small order. In order to overcome this drawback, the algorithm of the computation for the canonical decomposition formmatrices is described that is composed by combination of alternating least squares and stochastic gradient descent. This algorithm has no restrictions from the standpoint of the order of the tensor under the consideration. The numerical tests are presented for the approximation of functions in six-dimensional space that demonstrate the high computational efficiency and high quality of results. The instabilities arising at the estimation of the rank of the decomposition are another trouble of the canonical decomposition. The results of the numerical tests are presented that illustrate the search for the optimal rank providing the minimum of the discrepancy of the exact solution and its approximation.

Abstract:
