Full textThe aim of this thesis is to formalise historical chain shifts within modern phonological theories. Martinet (1952, 1955, 1970) distinguishes two main categories of chain shifts: push chains and pull chains. Push chains will be dealt with in the first main part of this thesis (chapters 2 and 3). For modelling of push chains, an existing model is used: Łubowicz's (2003, 2012) Contrast Preservation Theory. For modelling pull chains, which will be the focus of the second part of this thesis (chapters 4 and 5), a new theory will be proposed, based on the phonetic work by De Boer (2001). This proposition is based on the notion of the pillar domains (domaines piliers). Chapter 1 starts with the observation that neither the derivational, SPE-like, theories or output driven theories like Prince's & Smolensky's Optimality Theory (OT) are able to formalise chain shifts properly. Within the derivational theories, it is possible to get a correct description of a chain shift. However, in order to do that, we have to break the links between the different stages of the chain shift. Therefore, one loses the systemic interdependence of the different stages, which is the essence of the chain shift. As regards to Optimality Theory, it is the two-level structure of the theory which proves problematic for chain shifts. In a theoretical chain shift such as /a/ → [e] > /e/ → [i], it is impossible for OT to make, in the same analysis, [e] an optimal candidate and /e/ a non-optimal one. In chapter 2, we analyse and compare several output-driven propositions that have been made to account for chain shifts. Many of them are not satisfactory because they do not manage to model the systemic motivation of chain shifts. The only theory that seems able to complete this objective is Łubowicz's Contrast Preservation Theory (CPT). This theory is based on the notions of contrast, contrast preservation and it evaluates scenarios rather than individual candidates. Contrast preservation is achieved through contrast transformation. The term contrast transformation indicates that the contrast levels of the input system are preserved but that their nature is different in the output system. One observation about CPT is that Łubowicz designed it for synchronic chain shifts. In chapter 2, we prove that CPT is able to model the perceptible coherence in diachronic chain shifts. In chapter 3, thus we decide to test the validity of CPT on actual historical chain shifts. It is tested on two cases. One is the well-known vocalic chain shift the Great Vowel Shift in English. The other one is the Second German Sound Shift (or High German Consonant Shift). We demonstrate that CPT is able to account for both of these chain shifts. At the end of chapter 3, CPT is tested on another type of chain shifts, i.e. chain shifts in first-language acquisition. The studied chain shift is s → θ → f. This chain shift is different from the other two because there is no new contrast level created. The last stage of this chain shift ends with a merger . Once again, CPT can account for this chain shift in a coherent way

Full textThe preservation of historic cities requires on behalf of the actors committed to the urban development of the urban historic ensemble (EUH) additional efforts to extend their actions beyond isolated buildings. In practice, when developing historic urban ensembles, the conservation of the urban heritage seems to be relegated to an external if compulsory constraint which has to be overcome. This situation often results in the opposition of two aims: development versus conservatory. The question of how can the conservation of urban heritage be better considered is debated on international, national and local scales. By joining this current debate, our thesis aims to answer the following question: how can we improve the management of the imperatives behind urban development in historic cities, when tied to patrimonial obligation towards urban ensembles? The literature review helped us show that the notion of urban heritage, which justifies the urban preservation, was born in the minds of planners confronted with urban development, linking the notion of the urban heritage more closely to that of development than to conservation. In the absence of one that would move towards urban heritage preservation and confronted with the dominant if opposite postures, we realized, based on the literature review, that the opposition shared anchoring elements: the preservation paradigm of actions, centered on buildings and unsuitable in the case of ensembles, this paradigm supported by divergent institutional cultures and strengthened by an opposition between the modes of local implication.Considering the well-known difficulties and the contributions of the literature review, which clarifies the nature of the opposition between heritage conservation and development, how can the preservation of historic urban ensembles be thought differently? To answer that question, we propose reflecting on urban preservation as integrated to urban development. On the methodological level, the nature of the opposition between development and conservation sends us back to the analysis of what takes place on the field. We chose to look at the historic center of Avignon, where various actors have attempted to exceed this opposition. Avignon, as a mid-sized city of the South of France, is endowed with one of France’s biggest protected areas which cover the entire historic center. The history of the actions carried out in the intramural brings out archetypical situations which illustrate the opposition between development and conservation. The case study allowsus to intellectualise the mobilization of urban heritage on 3 levels: Institutional, Find and Urban action. Each of these levels distinguishes itself by the nature of the mobilization and by the point at which are made manifest the mobilization of the material and symbolic dimensions of urban heritage. Starting with the case study, we have conceptualised a model which goes beyond a restricted reading focused on the opposition to think out urban development within the context of urban conservation. The model brings into the urban development the notion of urban heritage designation as a succession of actions which qualify urban historic ensemble as heritage and preserve them. On the scientific level, the model mobilizes notions, borrowed from sociological, communicational, ethnological and geographical approaches of heritage designation. It proposes a new analytical framework for thinking about the actors involved in the urbanistic management of the historic urban ensembles, so as to exceed the oppositions and guarantee a sustainable creation of urban heritage which does not constitute an obstacle for the imperatives of development. The model helps us see the roles at stake and organizes the various actions undertaken by the various actors in favour of both heritage and development to come up with an integrated urban heritage designation

Full textThe medina of Tlemcen is an expression of a multidimensional heritage, urban, architectural, cultural and traditional. Founded western of Agadir by the Almoravids, the medina has been enriched throughout centuries by civilizations which succeeded it (the Almohads, the Abdalwadides, the Merinids, the Ottomans, the French and the Algerians). The social and cultural footprints on the city of Tlemcen is the result of this legacy, full of emotion and pain, forged by prosperity and struggle.Eachsite, monument, art work or ordinary object, has a story to pass on. This complex combination is a legacy for many nations, especially those of the Mediterranean.Although the tangible and intangible heritage of the city has stood the effect of time, it remains dependent on various anthropogenic and natural factors that affect its resistance to degradation and its sustainability. It is in this context, and faced with this complexity of the heritage, it appears that a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach is necessary to study the Medina of Tlemcen. We have chosen to tackle the subject from three angles: the first focuses on the history of the city of Tlemcen region, an approach that explores the potting soil of the medina. The second perspective aims to analyzing the forces that have shaped the city of Tlemcen in recent times. The last part lays out an approach to the management and the valorization of the heritage of the medina of Tlemcen

The precarious condition of the railway heritage and the lack of understanding of this cultural resource motivated the investigation into the context around the Paraná railway. The railway heritage is analyzed from its construction to its decline, then, from its abandonment to its conservation. The evolution of the paranaense railway teaches us, among other things, about its political, social, economic and cultural importance for the society. In the light of developments in the field of conservation and analysis of the processes of tombamento (heritage designation), the way that the state's railway heritage is understood, valued and preservedare identified. The almost exclusive emphasis on historical value shows a tendency towards musealization and a lag from the international conservation context by the Paraná conservation organization, the Cultural Heritage Coordination. To draw attention to the importance of railroad heritage, a Railway Heritage Value Table that extends values beyond historicalvalue was developed. The analysis of the importance of the tombado railway heritage in Paraná is completed based on this table. In consequence of the extended values, a broader vision of heritage was needed to better understand the heritage. A method of interpreting the Paranaguá-Curitiba railroad cultural landscape, the first railway built in Paraná, shows us a global vision of railway heritage as a cultural resource for conservation and as a potential for the future local development. Certain values –that were included on the Railway Heritage Value Table –were ignored in the heritage analysis undertaken by the state. These values however are found in Paraná railway heritage and they reinforce its importance. The understanding and valorization of the railway landscape from the analysis of essential elements and good practices is advanced. The good practices present the preservation of the railway and industrial heritage especially the international ones. It is also learned ways to use the Paranaguá-Curitiba railway landscape as a vector for local development.
