Abstract:
AbstractThe acquisition of books and journals for a scientific library is costly. To ensure that this is a cost-effective process, consideration must be given to the arrangement, care and preservation of the collection. The books should be stored in a designated library area. Items acquired by purchase or donation must be catalogued, and a loan record kept. Besides regular library routines, attention must be given to the protection and preservation of the collection. Among the factors that contribute to the deterioration of library materials are temperature and humidity within the storage area, air pollution, dust, light and pests. Unchecked, they may cause serious damage to library materials at a very fast rate. If they are controlled, deterioration is greatly reduced.

Abstract:
The Center for Library and Distribution of Agricultural Technology is one of the special libraries that manages rare library materials, namely antiquariat library materials. Antiquariat library material is a rare library from the Dutch colonial era which contains information about agriculture. Antiquariat library materials require special handling to preserve existing information, this conservation process is called the Preservation process. Preservation is a way to preserve library materials which is not only physical preservation but also includes preservation of information contained therein. Preservation is an effort so that the information contained therein can still be accessed and prevented from extinction. This study uses a qualitative approach, with more emphasis on the way of description in expressing the phenomena experienced by research subjects. As for the subjects of the study are the Library and Agricultural Technology Dissemination of Bogor City. The object under study is the preservation process carried out by the Central Library and Distribution of Agricultural Technology in preserving antiquariat library materials. The results of this study indicate that the preservation process carried out by the Central Library and Distribution of Agricultural Technology has been going well. The process of observation carried out by the Central Library and Distribution of Agricultural Technology is to carry out the process of media transfer by digitizing using two methods, namely scanning and capturing. The results of the digitization are presented in the form of e-books and CD-Roon that can be accessed by users only at the Agricultural Library and Technology Center.

AbstractThe care and handling of library and archival materials has become a much - discussed topic in recent years. Considerable time, effort, and money are being invested by many libraries and archives in protective housing, rebinding, conservation, and preservation microfilming programs. These activities are expensive. Therefore it makes good fiscal sense to delay the need for these costly activities by making an effort to preserve library materials in good condition for as long as possible.

Abstract:
In the article the Director General of the National Library of Estonia describes the development of the Library as a centre of expertise for the creation and preservation of collections of digital materials within the framework of the European Digital Library. The legal deposit of digital and other non-print materials is seen as an essential precondition for the preservation of the nation's cultural heritage and the article examines the history of legal deposit legislation in Estonia, leading to the inclusion of online publications from 2001. With the technical and other resources available to the Library, it was necessary to employ selectivity in the archiving of online publications and the principles governing the selection are described. The digital archive DIGAR has developed into a flexible archive system covering all the digital objects managed by the National Library and is intended to become a central digital archive for all Estonian libraries. An important priority for the Library is to develop a unified information portal ensuring the compatibility of all e-collections and e-services, offering users integrated access to the Library's resources.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate the rate of print material deterioration at the Learning Resource Center – a university at the Mekong Delta and identify users’ behaviors that may harm library materials, thereby presenting some potential solutions to enhance librarianship students’ awareness of preservation. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on Walker’s (2003) conceptual framework of preservation and that of education and propaganda from awareness development. Using a quantitative approach, 25-item questionnaire was delivered to 133 sophomores and seniors and analyzed by SPSS software. Qualitative data from the open-ended question were recorded and analyzed by themes. Findings The findings from this study show that the rate of print material deterioration at the Learning Resource Center was relatively low compared to that of other libraries in the nation and in the world. In addition, students’ knowledge about how to make the photocopies, as well as how much to open the book, is limited. The most important reason is because of lack of education from school and the library. The research also proposed some effective and realizable solutions to enhance librarianship students’ awareness of preservation of the materials at Learning Resource Center of a Mekong Delta university, Vietnam. Practical implications This research provides library staff and users, especially librarianship students, with an awareness of the important role of book preservation, human behavior of library collections and potential preventive ways of book damage. This study also specifies evidence that library lecturers should include ethical issues in their lectures because librarianship students still have limited knowledge of book preservation. By doing so, these actions may motivate librarianship students to continue to learn and apply their knowledge of preservation into library materials and their own documents. Furthermore, the finding of the library work punishment contributes to better understanding of library labor force and students’ personality education. The findings can serve as a reference to educating other users in Vietnam and globally. Originality/value The level of print material deterioration at the Learning Resource Center of a Mekong Delta university, Vietnam and library work punishment were observed to be the most important findings with regard to library preservation in a particular library in Southeast Asian country. These findings provide insights into students’ awareness of preservation, not yet discussed in the literature.

Abstract:
Abstract This study investigated the factors hindering information resources preservation and the extent to which information services are affected in academic libraries. The population consisted of 170 library staff who were conveniently selected from the seven academic libraries under study. The researchers prepared a well-structured questionnaire for data collection and the responses were subjected into SPSS version 20 and content analysis. Findings revealed that lack of awareness, inappropriate building, and lack of preservation plan and being unsure on how to get started, being unsure on how to protect digital information resources and inadequate funding are the factors hindering effective preservation in academic libraries in Tanzania. The study also revealed that lack of information resources preservation affects library services to a great extent. The study concludes that damage of information resources affected information services. The study recommends that academic libraries management in collaboration with other stakeholders should establish a preservation consortium that will oversee the preservation issues in academic libraries country wide that may reduce the extent to which the barriers of information resources preservation affects the information services in the country. Through this consortium experts in the field of preservation will share skills on how they could tackle the preservation challenges together.

It is not uncommon for a university to house its special collections library in the “old” library building. The character of the architecture and the connection with the university’s past often fit with the mission of collecting and preserving rare books, manuscripts, and university archives. A beautiful old library can inspire both librarians and researchers. However, it also can be the downfall of the very collections we treasure. Many older libraries now housing rare and valuable special collections materials have out-of-date and inadequate environmental control systems, if they have any at all. The resulting environmental conditions, particularly wide fluctuations in . . .

Abstract:
One of the greatest challenges facing area studies librarians today is preservation of collections. Area studies collections in libraries, the backbone of international studies programs for most colleges and universities in North America, are in danger. Most materials in these collections were published on acidic paper and poorly bound leaving them susceptible to rapid deterioration. Slavic collections, for example, appear to be in dire need of preservation treatment, but there is very little hard data on the scope of the problem. This research project, conducted at the University of Kansas Libraries, is the first step toward gaining a better understanding of the overall condition of Slavic collections. A survey of the Slavic holdings was conducted to provide statistical information on their physical condition. Results of the survey reveal that the condition of these collections should be cause for serious concern. However, the problems are not so great that they cannot be overcome through careful preservation planning and interlibrary cooperation.

The rapid proliferation of electronic resources (e-resources) in library collections and the increasing use of digitization as a preservation tool has altered the preservation landscape. Despite these changes, the need for libraries to plan their preservation and conservation workflows and processes continues. Baird’s Practical Preservation and Conservation Strategies for Libraries is intended as an overview of methods that can be used by small public and academic libraries where staff, funding, and time is at a premium. The book focuses on print materials, although limited attention is paid in the final two chapters to other types of materials. The book takes a holistic approach to the preservation and conservation cycle. Evaluation and assessment of preservation needs, development of preservation workflows, basic book repairs, disaster planning, and digital preservation are the topics covered in the book’s eleven chapters.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This article surveys and analyzes archival literature and legal resources (primarily United States–focused) related to copyright considerations that archivists and other content managers must be aware of to effectively and legally maintain a collection of born-digital materials. These considerations include the centrality of copying to preservation actions, shifting definitions of ownership, unclear distinctions between published and unpublished content, digital rights management laws and technologies, and the layered copyrights that can exist in complex digital objects and their dependencies. Strategies for dealing with these challenges include securing rights ahead of time, adopting legal rationales related to orphan works and fair use, adapting practices from specialized digital preservation subfields, ensuring routine procedures adequately address copyright-related recordkeeping and risk management, and advocating for preservation-enabling copyright reforms. An examination of these issues and strategies in the context of current thinking about copyright suggests that while certain legal exceptions and existing rights frameworks can help to facilitate digital preservation activities, copyright will continue to be a barrier until significant reforms are enacted.

Abstract:
As part of establishing a strategic plan for preservation at the University of Kansas (KU) Libraries, a task force was organized to conduct two collection condition surveys. One survey focused on materials returning from circulation, and the other looked at the general collections. Materials returning from circulation were surveyed to determine their condition because most preservation efforts at KU are “use” driven. The survey of the entire collection shed light on the physical condition of KU’s overall holdings. This information aided in long-term preservation planning. Survey data from the more than 4,000 volumes were entered directly into a computer database using laptop computers. This facilitated quick data entry, improved the accuracy of the information, and made data analysis easier. The results of the survey have had far-reaching effects in determining library policy, from influencing a decision to switch to a paperback-preferred purchasing policy, to increasing awareness of space and facility concerns throughout the libraries, to heightening user awareness of preservation issues.

Abstract:
As the archival profession is inextricable from future-focused thinking, sustainable preservation must be incorporated into archival practice. Sustainable thinking considers the economic, environmental, social, and cultural needs of both present and future generations, without privileging one factor over another. This article investigates the existing literature on sustainable preservation practices in archives. Sustainability presents a challenge to the archival mission. Becoming more sustainable begins with changing practices, which requires investing time, money, and energy to learn new information. The imperative to provide care for cultural resources is an argument for proceeding with caution. Nevertheless, the reality of the climate crisis and an ever-growing body of evidence from the archives field suggest that archives can and should adopt more sustainable practices. Research indicates that preservation goals may be more effectively met through sustainable practices, leading to more reliable preservation environments and financial savings for the institution as a result of reduction in energy use. This article identifies opportunities for action archives can take to become more sustainable through building design, learning from cultural preservation traditions, rethinking the role of archivists, and reconsidering the impact of practices, both small and large. In the 1980s, Hugo Stehkämper drew attention to principles for natural air-conditioning reliant upon building design, but civilizations have been developing procedures for preserving cultural heritage materials for centuries prior to the advent of so-called modern technology. In the current century, archives, libraries, and museums are continuing to discover a multitude of effective sustainable methods. Drawing upon decades of study, successes, and failures will allow archivists to assess and rethink practices.

Abstract:
Visitors to the United States Library of Congress will find it in the midst of major expansions of three kinds – expansions to preserve what otherwise might be lost, to protect what it already has, and to make what it has more readily and widely accessible. One current kind of expansion takes the form of constructing a new complex of four buildings in the side of a mountain near the city of Culpeper in the state of Virginia, about an hour's drive from the library's main facilities in Washington, DC. This complex, named the Library of Congress Packard Center for Audio-Visual Conservation, will provide safe storage and new preservation and access systems for the film, video, and sound collections – 5.7 million items – administered by the library's Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. The library's second major current expansion consists of constructing off-site storage modules for other collections on the site of Fort Meade, a US Army installation in the state of Maryland, less than an hour's drive from Washington, DC. On this site, the library and its partners are finishing the third and fourth of a projected 13, high-density storage modules, designed to extend the life of parts of the library's holdings by a factor of six. The third major current expansion of the Library of Congress is on the Internet, where the library's website now offers some 10 million digitized items. Through financial and other partnerships, the library will continue to add to its online resources, and is working with UNESCO on a project to create a World Digital Library. This will be a collaborative virtual repository through which libraries worldwide provide access to rare, primary source materials, illustrating cultures in all parts of the globe, for the potential benefit of people everywhere.

Abstract:
The Research Library of TSU has an extensive collection of periodicals – newspapers and magazines, published in the east of Russia during the revolution and the Civil War. The periodicals of the revolutionary era are a valuable source for humanities researchers due to the uniqueness of the material, which they contain. The demand for periodicals and their importance as a source actualize the problems of preservation and accessibility of these sources for researchers. The purpose of this publication is to present the experience of the Research Library of TSU, accumulated during conservation and restoration of Siberian and Far Eastern periodicals published in the first quarter of the 20th century. Besides that, it’s particularly important to assess its significance in the inclusion’s context of the source types in Siberian interdisciplinary research. The sources for the study were the periodicals of the 1917–1920s, stored in the Research Library of TSU, as well as scientific literature devoted to the problems of preservation and restoration of library funds. The working hypothesis of this paper is the statement that preservation and restoration can be one of the important stages in the research of unique library collections and during the creation of scientific electronic resources. The authors consider a number of factors affecting the preservation and organization of researchers’ work with this type of source. These factors include: material characteristics and print quality of the sources; historically changing storage conditions; nature and intensity of use; features of the restoration work and the materials used in this. Consideration of these factors led to the following conclusions. Firstly, the preservation and restoration of periodicals is not just a condition for conducting research. It’s important part of the research that gives to reconstruct the circumstances of its origin and use. Secondly, obtaining information about the existence contexts of the source can be useful when carrying out restoration measures, which can preserve its original appearance. Finally, digitization and further work with documents in electronic environment is impossible without ensuring safety. Thus, ensuring the preservation and restoration of Siberian and Far Eastern publications of the Civil War period is an important condition for the implementation of Siberian studies, including in the digital environment. It’s especially important when scientists have limited access to sources for one reason or another.

Abstract:
Last copies are a class of unique library materials that are at risk and warrant consideration for long-term preservation. WorldCat, the OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. bibliographic database, contains 24 million records for items held by only a single OCLC member library. The characteristics of these unique materials are not well understood. This study proposes a conceptual model derived from the examination of materials held exclusively by Vanderbilt University Libraries. The libraries hold approximately 1.5 million items in WorldCat. Of these, more than 23,000 are held only by Vanderbilt University Libraries. The bibliographic records and, in selected cases, the items themselves, were examined to determine characteristics and to identify the items whose content is at risk. The last copies at Vanderbilt University Libraries fell into four broad categories: (1) unidentified manuscripts, (2) last copies, (3) duplicate records, and (4) last expressions.
