Full textIn this thesis I theorize the concept of an 'expert on Islam' in news media and I confirm my theoretical positions through a content analysis of two Canadian newspapers' use of the expert on Islam; these two newspapers are The Globe and Mail and The National Post.
The thesis develops two arguments based on the results of the content analysis: first, the representation of Islam and expertise on Islam in news media has more to do with the preoccupations of Western culture than with Islam itself; second, there are distinct patterns in these representations that can contribute to an understanding of the role of the 'expert' in relations of power.

Full textThis study addresses the impact of a definition paradigm shift on the use of anglicisms in the French-speaking written press. Built around a diachronic analysis (2000-2015) of the numerous differences linked to a change of definition, it also ventures into the impact such a change may have on comparative analysis focusing on geographical origin (France vs Quebec) or the nature of the newspaper (“of record” vs “popular”). It aims at contributing to the literature though two different aspects:(1) This study is the only conceptual work to highlight what sort of impact a change in the definition of “English borrowing” can have on the frequency of anglicism usage. It shows through an opposition with/without French equivalents, that an analysis focused only on anglicisms for which French provides an equivalent – those Forest and Boudreau (1998) consider “unnecessary” or “erroneous” (Villers, 2009) – reveals an important drop in the usage frequency compared to an analysis based on all anglicisms. It also unveils that, out of three anglicisms extracted from my corpus, two have no equivalents in French and are de facto unavoidable.(2) This research is, to my knowledge, one of the first in comparative study to show, with empirical evidence, how definition affects not only usage frequency, but also dictates the way newspapers develop over time depending on different criterion. Based on two different angles of comparison (geographical origin and nature of the journal), I also show that a change in the definition leads to different evolution trajectories, different relationships between our newspapers and different diachronic variations. To answer my research questions, I built one of the largest corpora ever used for a study on anglicisms. With more than 330 million words, it gathers all the articles published by four different newspapers for the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015: Le Monde and Le Parisien for France, and Le Devoir and La Presse for Quebec. I also used two lists of keywords composed of 5416 and 2934 anglicisms taken from two general dictionaries (Le Petit Robert 2016 and Le Multidictionnaire de la langue française–4th edition 2013) and two specialized dictionaries (Höfler’s Dictionnaire des anglicismes–1982 and Le Colpron, dictionnaire des anglicismes–4th edition). By going far beyond what previous studies have done, it offers a more advanced overview than usual.First, my results show that the usage frequency is generally low (0.72% for all anglicisms; 0.28% for anglicisms with equivalents only; 0.44% for anglicisms without equivalents only) both in France and Quebec, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies. However, I find clear differences in terms of results for each analysis, as the frequency rate for anglicisms with equivalents is 1.5 times lower than the frequency rate for anglicisms without equivalent. This proves that the definition of the very concept of “anglicism” directly influences the frequency of usage. Second, I observe that this change of definition also affects comparative analysis focused on specific criteria such as the geographical origin or the nature of the newspapers. My study thus reveals great nuances in terms of trend over 15 years according to which definition is used: for instance, results for Quebec newspapers are slowly decreasing over time when anglicisms with equivalents are concerned, – especially for Le Devoir, whereas they increase when anglicisms do not have an equivalent. When it comes to the nature of the newspaper, Le Parisien, which is the newspaper that uses the most anglicisms of the four, forms a much more heterogeneous duo with La Presse when only anglicisms with equivalents are taken into account. They also give prominence to Le Devoir and Le Monde whose evolution trends are close to identical when the broader definition of Anglicism is used but a bit more asymmetric when equivalents come into play

Full textHabitat 67 is a residential complex of 158 modular apartments, designed by Moshe Safdie, and built in Montreal for the 1967 World Exhibition. Preliminary explorations of its unprecedentedly abundant, widespread and long-lasting coverage in the architectural press had revealed enigmatic synchronicity with the rise and fall of megastructure, ending in death and mourning of the whole Modern Movement. Taking advantage of theories of reception, this study is a methodical and exhaustive survey of the specialised mediatisation of Habitat 67, in itself and in its own context, aiming to establish the autonomy and critical historiographic impact of the phenomenon. After a methodological introduction, the report opens with a prologue unveiling early, academic related, self-training of Safdie as an analyst of editorial policies and their relationship to modern architecture. This portrait of a student pioneering in reception studies by militant commitment is giving brand new and much deeper understanding of the still historiographically vivid «student project that got built» diagnosis emitted in 1967 by critic Reyner Banham. The essay is then structured along the chronological succession of architectural projects and objects to which the media coverage is supposed to refer to, starting with thesis project of 1961. Safdie’s formerly published analysis of editorial policies appears to be fully integrated in the original design as well as in its mediatisation strategy, resulting in lasting and international diffusion as a highly relevant avant-garde feature, providing a progressive dimension to the capitalistic media-favourite «New Montreal Skyline», until 1963. Full textPerception of Canada in Time and Newsweek magazines (1995-2000) describes the Canadian presence in two main American newsmagazines. Canada appears as a peaceful country, even if, both magazines present violence-related stories involving Canadians. Canada is a multicultural country, and as far as diversity is concerned, the country does not seem peaceful. Quebeckers are divided concerning the question of their belonging to Canada and many other communities feel the effects of rejection (racism…); the Inuit and the French Quebeckers have chosen nationalism to express their different identities. While Canadians of different heritage are concerned by their identity in Canada, the whole country feels the impact of the American presence. And while Canadians focus on the substance of their national identity, Time and Newsweek journalists perceive Canada as a distinct country with its own characteristics based on peace, multiculturalism or even Nature; characteristics representing Canada in the world

Full textAcadia, a former French colony now part of the maritime provinces of Canada, may be considered as a local society, a minority, comprising the Acadian ethnic group which is french-speaking. In order to establish its collective existence, given a context of interethnic domination, dependence and alienation, Acadia puts considerable effort in shaping its identity, consequently, high stakes are attached to defining acadianite (acadian-ness) on the basis of a sociocultural substratum, built up power almost four centuries, and disseminating this knowlegde to the public. This even becomes the object of strategies used by different social groups seeking to gain or maintain an influential position within that society. Over more than a century, an ethnic apparatus has evolved, which, by developing identity ideologies which shape the collective memory and give meaning for everyday life, ensures this process of identity creation. Acadian newspapers are amongst the most effective institutions within this apparatus. Analysis of their institutional background and of their production of Acadian information shows in which identity strategies they have been instrumental over the past century. This historical overview also sheds light on the recent transition (since the sixties) from traditionality to modernity in Acadia, characterized by increased state regulation of acadianite

Full textThe principal objectives of this thesis are to look at the media's ineptness to "communicate" and to understand how a political press, in this case the feminist press of France and Quebec, is caught up in a paradoxal of the media market witch forces them into self-demise. Using a critical and feminist theory of communication, our analysis of the media is inscribed in a social dynamics context. This sociological analysis of the press was conceived in order to look into several functions of a newspaper such as a market product and a social enterprise. This methodology goes beyond a mere content analysis common to most media researches. By comparing the French and Quebec feminist press from 1970 to 1990, we're able to gain several insights as to why this press is driven into a strategical cul-de-sac. The thematic of this press, their partisan discourse, their internal organization, their relation to the media market and the images that they portray, are but some of the elements that explain their precarious situation. But their real ephemerality can best be explained through their political function. By analysing the press coverage of the "Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal" tragedy, we're able to assert that the written press participates in a global "over-informational-under informing" process. The press thus loses its function as a critique of the politics and in this process, recuperates and neutralizes the autonomous voice of women

Full textThe phenomena that are observed as homogenisation and differentiation are mostly perceived as being two contradictory forces where the presence of one is seen as cancelling out the presence of the other : humanity is either evolving towards greater resemblance, or toward greater individuality. Our thesis reunites social science authors who have contributed significantly on this subject. Our goal is to operationalize their discourse in a manner that would allow us to verify empirically their hypothesis. The analysis of more than 11 000 newspaper articles gathered from France and Canada allow us to conclude that there is a dual evolution in post-modernity where homogenisation and differentiation conjugate. Our thesis reminds readers of the importance of models that allow for the presence of multidimensional social phenomena as well as those models that take into consideration the incidence that historical-geo-political context can have on these phenomena

Full textOur research project, “What about Canada? The Changing Dynamics of the Indexing Theory: A Content Analysis ofThe Globe and Mailand The Toronto Star, ” is dealing with the theory of indexing in a Canadian context. Therefore, the main problem illustrated by Bennett and Pfetsch (2018) is that indexing theory removes “alternative voices, ” instead of including these “new” voices in order to balance the sources. In this new fractured environment, it is more complex than before to balance different perspectives and opinions because of the involvement of different actors in the political arena. The main argument of this thesis is that it is imperative totest the theory of indexation and to adapt its central elements to the new political environment. This means an inclusion of this new environment to the basic assumptions that will include alternative narratives. It is in this context that we decided to analyze the issue of immigration policies in Canada and its indexing by the media. Consequently, this thesis is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between the media and official political authorities in Canada, in particular, by addressing the question of the place of alternative narratives in Canadian journalistic discourse.

In this work we study the global qualitative behavior of three predator-prey models. We analyze the existence of limit cycle and canard cycle and we investigate the kinds of bifurcation that can occur. In the first model, Gause predator-prey with a refuge, we analyze the effects of a prey refuge on the ecosystem qualitative behavior. Employing the carrying capacity of the prey population in the Gause Model with a refuge we obtain the second model, for which we analyze the effects of the carrying capacity and we compare the results. In the third model we consider the continuous threshold harvesting strategies ocurring when the predator density is above a certain threshold. We note that the model has a complex dynamics with multiple internal equilibria and different types of bifurcation.
