Abstract:
Lo stato sociale nel pensiero politico contemporaneo. Il Novecento. Parte seconda: dal dopoguerra a oggi is intended to complete the overview of the presence of the Welfare State concept in contemporary political thought that began in 2007 with the volume dealing with the nineteenth century and then continued in 2009 with the first part of the reconstruction relating to the twentieth century (both published by Firenze University Press). The final period, from the end of the Second World War to the present, is marked by deeply conflicting situations. These range from, on the one hand, the success of the institutions proper to the Welfare State among the artificers of one of the most socially prosperous periods of Western history to, on the other, the surfacing of critical elements with repercussions which are among the most serious political issues of the present time. Uncoiling right through the second half of the twentieth century is the relentless clash between broadly social-democratic theories and those of a neo-liberalist stamp, with the addition of a third source of reflection: the "critical thought" aimed at underscoring the shortcomings of the Welfare State and its substantial dependence on the capitalist cycle. These are the historiographical issues addressed in this book by a number of scholars, engaged in reconstructing the amplitude and the internal breakdown of a debate that involves the political philosophy of the entire contemporary western world.

Abstract:
Freedom of the press has become a popular idea throughout the world. The promise of free expression, however, is not necessarily realized when governments feel that security and stability are threatened. This chapter explains the concept of freedom of the press. The theories and assumptions about freedom of the press, balancing conflicting rights, and societal constraints are reviewed. The chapter then shows how that concept is implemented, discussing legal, political, and economic factors for evaluation. The environmental factors are compared, and the reason behind press freedom violations by governments is discussed. Questions for the future of research on freedom of the press are offered.

Abstract:
Traditional histories of studio-era Hollywood contend that the film industry offered little more than acting and secretarial jobs to women; however, industry trade papers and syndicated press of the time reveal a different picture. Women worked as producers, executives, writers, script readers, production and costume designers, film and sound editors, set dressers, make-up artists, publicists, agents, researchers, actors, and directors. They worked for their unions and on industry committees. Although they didn’t always agree politically, Hollywood’s women shared a commitment to the Equal Rights Amendment and often helped each other’s careers. This chapter provides an overview of the diverse professions open to women in the Hollywood studio system and challenges the “great man” theories of authorship and female disempowerment that have driven conventional histories of old Hollywood.

Abstract:
The rich and expanding rhetorical universe of the English Renaissance annexed the expressive possibilities of painting and the plastic arts using a variety of figures and tropes. These—ekphrasis (intense description), blason (anatomizing description), paragone (the contest between the arts), and emblems and imprese (formal verbal-visual symbols)—allowed English writers to press the visual into the service of the verbal, creating powerful rhetorical tools and distinctive literary expression. This article describes the development of these verbal-visual tools from the late medieval period through the early seventeenth century by Italian art theorists and in the exemplary works of Sidney, Spenser, and Shakespeare.
