Amrane, Myriam Katia. "Figurations discursives de l’identité algérienne (dans la presse de langue française des années 90)." Montpellier 3, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006MON30083.
Full textThe problematic issue of the representations in language and the Algerian identity contradictions in the discourse framework, are approached through an analysis of meaning production in the media’s information discourses during the 90’s. The identity concept is first approached in the light of theoretical reflections evolved within the epistemological field of the Humanities so as to better grasp the articulation between identity, language and representation. An attempt is then made at characterizing components and contradictions of the Algerian identity within a multicultural setting. In the analysis section, the starting hypothesis is that the tensions exercising themselves between the various cultural interlocutor tendencies which stand out in society, are going to show themselves in discourse production for yielding programmes of contrary directions in which each tries to impose itself through disqualifying the other ones. The analysis thus inscribes itself within a dialectic and dynamic procedure which considers that in all acts of language, the internal and external levels hinge on each other, according to complex processes, so as to yield meaning. The processes of discourse analysis are appealed to in order to verify these starting hypotheses by determining the mechanism according to which the speaker makes his own the social representations for producing identity; this is done by starting from a corpus of material selected and subjected to an analysis that puts to use linguistic theoretical tools such as enunciation, argumentation, dialogism, etc. , tools that help to better understand how words contribute to social identity construction

Full textFor our study we have built up a corpus of articles from the Algerian press -written in french- between the years 1965 and 1985. The articles appeared in two papers: the daily el-moudjahid and in the weekly algerie-actualite. We have then studied the amalgamated chronicles by applying the specific methodology of the semiolinguistics science, which science holds a place among the new trends of research in the realm of linguistics. Our approach is two fold. It comprises : 1st. The analysis of the different chronicles united in one corpus and of the same theme of interest (maghrebi literature, western literature, oriental literature, african literature, and latino-american literature). 2nd. The recording of the characteristics (constant and changing) of such a type of information. Our thesis tries in a tentative fashion to answer the following questions: 1- how does a journalist-critic read a novel? 2- what does really happen when the journalist deals with a maghrebi, western, african, oriental, or a latino-american novel? 3- do the relations between the critic, the literary work, and the target remain the same and unchanged?

Full textUsing the concepts and analysis methods of speech, taking inconsideration the textometry to specify tbhistorical context, political and mediatheque. This thesis suggests to indicate throughout 783 french speakin algerian press articals, how the painful collective memory, caused by the colonisation and war, come up to mention the current relationship between France and Algeria. In four independant local newspapers emerging from the freedom of speech initated in the 90s, El watan, Le Quotidien d'Oran. Liberté and l'Expression, the study of this period is a « discursive moment » contained by two presidential elections, one in France (N. Sarkozy in 2007), the other in Algeria (A. Bouteflika reelected in 2009). Varying the different angles of analysis (content analysis, enunsiative analysis, argument-based analysis, textometry), bring out a general overview for the different elements and micro--corpus considered. In a perspective of dominante enonciativ and discursive, the related titles to the french nuclear testing in the 60s are investigated and the designation of events (« the war of Algeria », « 8th of May 1945 ») and the protagonists . A contextual analysis of the comparative and argumentative content about the different treatment of the four newspapers of some propose events. The exploration of the textometry will complete the analysis

Full textOur work focuses on neological creations in the written press in Algeria. We targeted our study on neologisms taken from two Algerian newspapers published in French (Liberté and El-Watan). The data collection of our corpus was spread over several years, in order to have better understanding of phenomenon. A classification of the gathered neologisms based on analytical grids inspired by the works of J. Tournier is followed by a discussion for each exemplified type of neologism. Our research is a contribution to the study of the vitality of the French language in a specific francophone area. The analysis of the collected neologisms will focus on semantic and morpho-syntactic aspects, and try to understand the extralinguistic mechanisms of the neological lexical creations in the journalistic discourse

Full textThis research focuses on the linguistic and the comparative analyses of the university teaching as it is reported in a french and an italian newspaper. This work has two main objectives : on the one hand, the comparison of lexical entities in each of the two similar languages; on the other hand, an account of the representation delivered by the media. The lexical meaning of the keywords « enseignement/insegnamento » and « universitaire/universitario » has been studied. The approach of lexical discourse and the theoretical model I have been applied, the Semantic of Possible Argumentative (SPA), has enabled us to reach our goal, which was to show how the SPA might be used as a bae for the comparison of the lexical meanings in two similar languages. This work has been carried out in three phases : (1) the construction of the lexical meaning of the aforementioned keywords, (2) the study of linguistics occurrences of the keywords in the corpus and (3) the proposition of a method in comparative analysis to be used to reveal cultural and lexical stereotypes according to the model of meaning that has been constructed

Full textThe discourse related to musical interpretation on string instruments in a corpus of newspaper articles is complex, mainly because of its pragmatic, enunciation-related and semantic features. The complete lack of polemics, the important role of the discursive ethos, the polyphonic features and semantic complexity, as well as the use of numerous stereotypes all contribute to making this epideictic discourse difficult to understand. The argumentative orientation of descriptive sequences provide us with another aspect of this complexity: the numerous operations of qualification and assimilation, the use of many subjective adjectives and negative structures, multiple enumerations – full of rhetorical figures, symmetry, asymmetry and semantic games - all contribute to further increase the comprehension difficulty of the text and impress the reader

Full textThe objective of pragmatism is to establish the relationship between signes and their users. For this purpose, us is made of theory and arguments which consider the statement to be comprised of one or several arguments and a conclusion. The conjunction "mais" "pero" "sino" are often found between two statements denoted p, q and may be associated with other conjunctions and operators. The pragmatic analysis of spanish and french journalistic language in writhen or oral forms has shown that tese counterarguments conjunctions are used in polyphonical enunciation when p and q are used by two enunciators. This is notable in monologal or monologic statements and in dialogal or dialogic statements. The role of these conjunctions in relation with other logical links in these types of statements is better explained with the establishment of a plan. Their value is then justified : opposition, concession or refutation

Full textThe aim of this comparative analysis of the press interview as a genre in French and in Japanese is to come to an understanding of the different positions of the interviewe via the study of the linguistic marks of inscription of subjectivity in order to determine the extent to which the genre transcends cultures. The author uses the theory of indicial enunciation as well as different notions arising from interaction analysis to construct a model for descriptive analysis which makes it possible to treat French and Japanese markers in an identical fashion. She brings to light the notion of figure which constitutes the tertium comparationis that provides the point of entry into the texts. Through the analysis of the functioning of the enunciative and interlocutive categories, the author describes the discursive roles of the interviewee as presented in almost eighty French and Japanese interviews, thereby demonstrating variables and constants in the procedures. This analysis leads to the definition of different transcultural configurations of interviews

Full textOur thesis proposes to analyse a sports-related phenomenon deeply rooted in the social environment – the football – by looking into its linguistic dimension. Our thesis is part of a comparative framework developed at two levels. Thus, a first level aims at a comparison between bilingual corpora made up of commentaries of League 1 football matches (season 2014-2015, in France and in Romania) and of commentaries of football matches of the World Cup in Brazil (2014), in French and in Romanian. These corpora are described by means of the criteria for their selection, collection and constitution. The second level – which constitutes the specificity of our approach – lies in the comparison of the materialities of these corpora : the print newspaper (the traditional newspaper) and the digital one, that is the commentaries of football matches as they appear on the web pages of the sports newspapapers. This double materiality of the corpus calls for a theoretical and analytical approach materialised firstly in a clarification of the notions used in this analysis. The digital is presented in terms of its characteristics, pointing out at the same time its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Secondly, the study extends to the micro-linguistic and textual/discursive level, on the basis of discourse and textual analysis. It is at this level that the different recurring configurations occur in these two types of commentaries, as well as the mechanisms turning football into a generator of emotions and metaphors as a linguistic resource taken over – by borrowing or migration – by other fields and disciplines in order to revive their own language and means of expression. The affiliation of our corpus to the media field constitutes the third level of our study and intends to identify the differences caused by the advent of a new staggering as far as its effects are concerned, both at the level of the newspaper’s architecture and at the level of the paper and digital fragmented commentaries
Burguet, Annette. "Contrat de communication et analyse de la restitution du discours de la presse." Paris 8, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA081230.
Full textThis research aims at an analysis of a restitution of a specific type of discourse: the discourse of the printed press. In this research i have given emphasis to a psycho-socio-linguistic approach that focuses on the social subject. If the restitution of journalistic information depends on cognitive processes applied during the treatment of information, i state that it is equally affected by the type of the text read and the acceptation and the validation of the referential objects it suggests. The different experiments in this research show first that the subjects restitute preferentially the stereotype present in the text. Second, the results that concern recall of the sane article presented under a modified structure, (original text vs. Modified text), bear evidence for the hypothesis of a communication contract that exists between the subjects and their jounal. Informed about the origin of the text, they recall the article better if it matches their expectations, i. E. If it contains the linguistic marks that identify it as a journalistic text. In the first experiment carried out with secondary school students, i found that they possess a certain shaping of the information, with general expectations and with a less defined contract, enhacing a qualitatively better memorisation of the original text. During the second experiment which matched students according to them being regular readers or occasional readers, it was shown that the stronger the reading habits, the more precise is the communication contract. The more important the expectations are, the better memorisation will be, if the initial expectations are confirmed. Analysis of the restitution of discourse of the press won't be successful without a interdisciplinary approach because, and here is the original contribution of this thesis, it should take into account not only the capacity of memory limited by cognitive processes but before all the communication contract established between the reader, as a social subject, and the particular type of discourse this research is about. Full textNews headlines are specific utterances that convey meaning in their own way. From the review of their functions, it has been attempted here to work out these particular mechanisms that call upon the newspaper's name, the organization of its headings, the layout, the modalities of the title's spatial inscription, the co-enunciation of text and pictures. The description of these peculiarities has been opposed to the entitling processes used notably for books. This research leans on the body of discourse analysis knowledge, the reflections of the profession, and the professional experience of journalism of its author. The uncovering of this context-dependent meaning production of newspaper titles leads to the investigation of linguistics concepts such as fencing, dialogism and naming, the implicit discourse, the illocutionary and performative utterance acts. This piece of discourse analysis proposes a reflection on the ideology that is a prerequisite to the utterance of titles, upon which are founded the internal organization and writing of the newspaper, as well as its relationship with the sociolinguistics community its readership constitutes. To complete this study, a corpus of more than three thousand titles has been gathered in the French national press. The tools offered by praxematics, along with elements of pragmatics, have then been applied. The output data of an automatic language processing procedure applied to this corpus is presented in an appendix

Full textThe present work is a comparative analysis of discussion groups in German and French online press. By studying the use of discourse repetition, it aims at outlining the specific intertextuality of what may be considered as a discourse genre that is both cross-linguistic and cross-cultural. This study is based on conversation analysis and discourse analysis. These tools are used with the double purpose to describe the functioning of " discussion groups " as communication devices and to highlight the existence of a framework that requests the locutors to produce an opinion discourse and also an argumentative discourse. The main focus of attention is put on forms of discourse repetition and the functions that discourse repetition fulfils: the analysis of this discourse practice shows regularities. This may be partly explained by the functioning of the communication device and partly explained by the fact that discourse repetition is indeed a defining characteristic of this emerging genre

Full textThis work proposes a semantic reading of Pierre Bourdieu's scientific discourse. Drawing on interpretative semantics as a theoretical model, this research uses a series of investigations of a corpus classified according to the sociologist's empirical fields. This classification allows having four sub-corpus which correspond to the Kabylia, colonial Algeria, the peasant Bearn and contemporary France. Relying on the hypothesis of the social transformation, the semantic description shows that the global corpus can be read as a dialectical sequence articulating three periods: the world before the transformation (Kabylia), the world during transformation (Algeria, Béarn) and the world after transformation (France). All along the research, a variety of interpretive and inter-textual processes are highlighted within and among the different parts of the corpus

Full textThe thesis proposes a reflection on the metalinguistic function of language. In particular, we consulted very recent works, even though we are fully aware that metalinguistic activity has never eluded philosophers and researchers. Once the operational concepts have been ascertained, the thesis focuses on the corpus as represented by the contemporary press. We placed particular emphasis on the way in which the statement of some speaker or other is presented by the author of the article. The forms of reported speech were therefore central to the study. Examining press articles enabled us to end up with a description of the forms in language according to their interpretation in the texts, ranging from the most thought-out to the most everyday forms. We hope that this research will have shed a light on the way in which one speaker understands and conceives the thought of another, possibly gives it a new interpretation, and sometimes consciously or unconsciously deforms it

Full textThe research captures the different strategies deployed by 5 daily Mexican newspapers of national coverage in face of the Zapatist uprising over the 1994-1995 period, using as a basis foe the analysis those headlines which present reported speech of actors placed on the political scene. Two approaches underlie the work : a quantitative approach based on the systematization of interventions attributed to the actors which intervene in the conflict, and a semio-discursive approach which allows for a surfacing of the enunciative modalities and the argumentative strategies of the reported statements, through which the different ethos of the concerned actors can be apprehended. The first part of the text covers the rapport between the Mexican press and the political power over the years previous to the uprising, the contextualization of the Chiapas event and its periodisation, and describes the theoretical and methodological tools utilized. The second part consists of an analysis of each of the four periods considered, and thesystematic presentation of the different public spaces developed as well as the discourses produced in relation to the event. Each period is considered from the point of view of the volume of information of the dailies, the public space which receives mediatic attention in relation of the conflict, the enunciative modalities and the thematisation of the discourses produced and classified by actor and by newspaper. The text ends with an analysis of the thematic trajectory of certain notions, in order to show how their sense, perceived in the information articles, are generally retaken and problematised in the opinion articles. This enables one to envision the strategies of resistance of adhesion to certain discursive universes of the dailies, and the arenas of symbolic and political confrontation which theZapatist movement has been able to make emerge

Full textThe work presented in this thesis deals with the phenomenon of political manipulation. Our framework concentrates on written political speech, more precisely on the kind of speech which takes official stands. We focus on the linguistic strategies used by the speaker and speechwriter to serve his interests. By 'speech with official stands' we refer to the public statements and the press releases in which the collective speaker speechwriter uses all possible strategies to win the adhesion of the public to his theses. The study concentrates on two strategies: the use of illocutionary acts and verbal subjectivity. Our study thus covers two fields : the field of pragmatics and the field of enunciation. First of all, we will show that according to the circumstances of speech- making the speaker usually uses three categories of illocutionnary acts: the directive, the assertive and the expressive which follow a particular structure. Secondly, as far as enunciation is concerned we analyse how the speechwriter and speaker makes his most important idea clear to his audience using both provocation and seduction when addressing his public, while asserting his right of speech as group representative. Finally, we show that the values or rhetorical figures which he uses, that is to say all his arguments, are carefully selected to serve his factitive objective

Full textThe linguistic innovation of French is widely practiced in journalistic discourse in Algeria. On the basis of the typology of new word formations proposed by Jean-François Sablayrolles, we conduct a comparative analysis between the neologisms of the journalistic chronicles « Tranche de vie » (Le Quotidien d’Oran) and « Pousse avec eux » (Le Soir d’Algérie). The got results make it possible to confirm that the neological process touches units of various categories, without exception, but more particularly names. The author of « Pousse avec eux » produces nominal neologisms, formed mainly by derivation and composition, in connection with political subjects. The author of the chronicle « Tranche de vie » produces neologisms by various processes, in particular by hybridization between French and Arabic language, and in connection with social realities: he creates by "compocation" the series samedhan, dimandhan, lundhan, mardhan, mercredhan, jeudhan, vendredhan to designate the days of the week during the period of Ramadhan. The chronicler takes advantage of the situation of contact of language to operate a linguistic and cultural hybridization. The study show, in addition, that the production or the (Re) use of the neologisms does not depend inevitably on the need for the journalists to indicate new realities. Certain neologism refers to already existing objects. They can be with other factors namely: the position of the speaker, handling of the language and pressures contributing to the non-observance of the code. In our corpus, the linguistic neology seems to function as a linguistic tool whose use is intentional: it aims at various argumentative ends that can be summarized in the will of the journalists to persuade the readership, by establishing connivance by the familiarity and humor. The genre of the chronicle, which makes it possible to free itself temporarily from the normative barriers, is thus a privileged place of the neological creation

Anticolonialist intellectuals acted on the level of the discourse of "truth" and on the level of conscience. In order to keep a small proportion of public opinion informed about the events that were taking place in Algeria, these intellectual journals played the role of a provisional counter-power. Speech acts became synonymous with actions. By studying the discourses of these two journals, two struggle strategies are being set up; they both reflect the two different trends of thought in the intellectual left; i. E. Full textThis study shows the continuity that has characterized the discourse of le droit de vivre, a french antiracist newspaper, since its creation in the thirties. The evidences of this trait are projected by iterative textual structures in various analytical levels, through which coherent semantic clusters convey specific meanings. The analysis unveils the recurrency of semantic contents, linguistic structures, pragmatic functions and discourse strategies that reveal a particular socio-cultural, historical, political and cognitive context at the same time that they play an influence on it. The selected texts, which deal specifically with the struggle against antisemitism, are considered as part of their situational contexts as well as within their intertextual relations. Through this analysis we are able to identify the distinctive features of an institutionally determined discourse in which language is linked to action, to enunciative positions, and to manners of structuring reality. Such a discursive continuum suggests a relationship betwven language and the ideological model of the journalists and editors of this publication, who throughout different periods of time and circumstances have transmitted in their texts a polarized image of the world. Several aspects concerning discursive efficiency are developed in each level of analysis

Full textThe term ‘Islamalgam’ – from which our study originates - refers, on the whole, to the assimilation – more or less definite and deliberate- of a religion, namely Islam, with a complex, socio-political phenomenon: Terrorism. The object of this thesis applies to the ‘construction’ of the event of 11th September 2001, in the discourse of three French, non-specialized press organs; these daily newspapers are: Le Figaro, Libération, and Le Monde. For that, we will consider the period spanning from 11th September to the end of 2001. Our study is part of a framework combining discourse analysis with theories on argumentation. Our problematic of research (Which connections are introduced between terrorism and Islam in reference to the events of 11th September 2001?) calls upon the crossed resources of enunciative linguistics and lexical statistics while focusing on the emergence of a formula and of a world of dominating discourses – that of war – and analysing the various setting-ups of the represented discourse. We rely on the observation of the lexical avatars surrounding the words ‘terrorism’ and ‘Islam’ and of their textual environment. We will try to bring out some argumentative strategies and some enunciative operations related to the migration of certain syntagms that can be described as words-arguments. The aim of our analysis is to narrow down the interpretative paths suggested or imposed by the articles and to enable us to observe which linguistic device help their implementation. Eventually, we will try to reveal, with the discourse analysis, how the written press in France constructs or de-constructs the representation of Islam during the events of 11th September 2001, throughout the circulation of language-structured values

Full textThis work deals with the global justice movement –“altermondialisation”- in the French press. The first part precises the theoretical perspective used when we study the media discourses. The notions of frame and framing are presented and adopted. They encourage to give up the approaches of media discourses which are discussed in terms’ of “representation of” and to recognize their power in the foundation of the common world. The part B is about the global justice movement like an event. Indeed, it’s through and by the event that the movement appears and finds, after the Seattle summit in 1999, a consistence and an esthetic in the mediated public sphere. Then, it’s through the paradigm of events that the global justice movement finds his identity and story and becomes a political actor. The part C concerns the year 2001. The violence becomes a problem. In July, violent fights between demonstrators and the Italian police end with the death of a young man. In September, it‘s the terrorist attack against the Twin towers in New York. The events are both studied through the consequences they have on the media discourses which deal with the global justice movement. In the last part, we analyze “altermondialisation” like a specific social discourse and his spread and circulation –his triviality- in the global social discourse

In this approach, all sequences are seen as discursive representations of viewpoints and objects ; a discursive strategy is defined as a relationship between two discursive representations, one of them being a given viewpoint and the other one combining that viewpoint with the expression of the speaker’s attitude towards it. The aim of this work is to provide a possible classification of discursive strategies – based on the linguistic features of corresponding sequences. Most of the concepts used in this thesis originate from the conception polyphonique du discours by Anscombre and Ducrot, developed by Haillet

Full textOur study focuses on a linguistic approach (more specifically, a semantic-pragmatic approach) of advertising discourse in print media. Our aim is to study the main differences and similarities of the advertising discourse in the context of European advertising (Portuguese, French and Romanian). The theoretical framework of our analysis is mainly based on Bernard Pottier’s semantic theory that links the conceptual, the linguistic and the discursive levels. Because the advertising discourse aims to persuade potential consumers, it conveys the deontic modality, which in its turn combines with the epistemic and axiological modalities. In the first part, we study the characteristics and functions of each component of the advertising discourse (title, argumentative text, image, logo and slogan). The second part of our work focuses on the analyses of linguistic phenomena, such as: modalisation, forms of address, deixis and negation. The third part deals with the cultural representations - linked to stereotypes and myths - in Portuguese, French and Romanian advertising discourse. The comparative approach allowed us to deepen the study of the discursive textual structures that we tried to contextualize from a socio-cultural point of view. Given the complexity of the advertising discourse, our study aims to offer a better understanding of the persuasive force in this type of discourse, through the analysis of its linguistic, social and mythical contents

Full textThe principal questions of the thesis regard the parameters of the discursive production of the headlines as well as the relations between the headlines and the articles of the newspaper and the historical event. The assumptions are: - the accumulation of the journalist's experience defines the production of the headlines, - the relation between the article and the headlines are not direct but influenced by the relevant factors of the media market and - the headline is the particular way to handle the historical event. The research contains 3 tasks: it determines the psycho-sociohistorlcal appearance of the journalistic data; it detects the discursive data relating to the production of headline; it locates the productive factors which legitimate the intervention at the level of persuasion. The validity of the assumptions overrules the behaviorism data as regards the headline production and it proves that the latter is a complex process

Full textIs a semiotics of enunciation conceivable and operational? Is the concept of enunciation (as it is posed in semiotic theory) an operational concept or simply a working hypothesis? Such is the - somewhat provocative - question that this work seeks to explore, by assuming an affirmative response on the methodological plane. In other words, this thesis seeks to (re)situate the question of enunciation within the frame of discourse analysis, or more generally, media analysis. This frame of investigation allows us to identify the enunciative arrangements and modes at work in the discourses of written (feminine) press. The frame of research was thus constructed (part 1: a problem under construction) at the intersection of two major theoretical and "practical" questions, the general question of enunciation and the question of use. Within the semiotic concept of enunciative praxis, the guiding thread of this theoretical syntagm - what d. Bertrand calls the impersonal aspect of enunciation ; (l'impersonnel de l'énonciation), passing through linguistic (Benveniste), semiotic, pragmatic, and Bakhtinian approaches to enunciation - seemed to pose the problem in terms of a "mise en scènes, scenography, enunciative arrangements", enunciative figures, or even discursive positions ; which one can designate as commonplaces of (uttered) enunciation. The convergence of these different perspectives leads us to propose an extensive conception of enunciation, correlative to a socio-semiotic approach to discourse. Some practical analyses (case studies), based on a corpus of texts taken from feminine magazines, validates the theoretical and epistemological invitation toward the communicational and socio-semiotic dimensions (part 2 : for a socio-semiotic approach to discourse in the feminine press) within the perspective of a semiotics of enunciation, focused on praxis, that is, on a theory of discourse in the act, it was interesting to analyze how these discourses, by using these + commonplaces; of enunciation, construct a discursive identity. This study, as a form of scientific praxis or bricolage; (in Levi-Strauss' sense), finishes by setting into place several (semiotic) elements which can outline a general frame of research for an approach to written press

Full textThis thesis analyzed the major changes of the 1989-2004 period and its particular focus is on the analysis of 2002-2005 period in ten national newspapers (from which five are the most important Romanian newspapers). It also presented the interviews with the specialized journalists in European integration from the ten newspapers included in the analysis. Through the analysis of the ten newspapers' content we had identified the year 2000 as the first important moment in the process of media awareness of the importance of the European integration issue. During the entire period of social and political transition, the European Union had remained one of the most important objects of the media discourse. In 2002, the great delay of Romania and Bulgaria regarding the negotiations had lead to the postponing of their adhesion at a future date, and this had made of the temporality of waiting the basis of the Romanian journalists: 2007 or 2008? The date of Romania’s adhesion at the European Union has remained uncertain and the transformations of the Romanian journalists in the view of the European integration had revealed the peculiarities of a durable media event, which is doubled by journalists' specialization in this field and the apparitions and the development of newspapers' sections: "Europe / Integration"

Full textOur research summarizes the consecutive attempts to transform the teaching of French from an official language to a secondary then a foreign language. The process of arabisation (teaching in Arabic language) , that halted the partial bilingualism, at least at the official level, to a less extend, has assigned to French the status of a foreign language, in contradiction with the role of a language that vehicles science and technology, that was the preferred one for Algerians immediately after the independence.French was in the midst of ambivalence, between rejections as a heritage of the colonial time and attractiveness as a mean to openness and economic development. The ideological and political interests to assign to French a status of a foreign language has immediately created a confusion as for the goals, the contents, the support and the relevant practices in the teaching/apprenticeship of French foreign language.Could French, in these conditions, be the subject of a legitimate education, credible and motivating? The amalgam and the abusive usage of certain didactic notions related to the communicative approach, in contradiction with existing practices, through the analysis of teaching manuals and orientation literature, have led us to revisit these concepts though the history of education and its evolution. Therefore, we have shifted from a linguistic problematic (Status of a language), to a didactic problematic (status of the subject French foreign language), in order to setup a reliable didactic system of French foreign language, coherent and stable, hence the title of our theses “The teaching of French in Algeria: from a linguistic situation to the status quarrels”

Full textAn editorial article is a way the newspaper enterprises to participate in the public affairs of a country. Its study, therefore, is key to understanding some aspects of the role played by the print media in the public sphere’s organization. As in all verbal interactions, the editorialist has to anticipate his audience’s characteristics. The purpose of this research was to define the discursive construction of the addressee in the editorials of Chilean press, from a corpus of 225 articles of 5 daily newspapers. Based on a “semiocommunicative” discourse analysis approach (Charaudeau, 1995, 2003), the investigation focused of the relationship between linguistic structures and the communicational situation. The editorial seems to offers a space for the discourse of elites, and highlights, the configurations of the reader-addressee, revealing the discursive strategies used by the editorialist, as a critical observer of the state’s activities

Full textThis thesis deals with a semantic and pragmatic analysis of the discursive construction of the european identity in Le Canard Enchaîné articles about food. The relevance of this work lies particularly in the fact that it stands amidst various social sciences themes and takes into account the impact of a media in the construction of the image of a community in building. Our research is focused on a linguistict analysis of discourse. It is based on a corpus of 78 articles collected from 1996 to the year 2000. This research is based on the theory of Semantics of the Argumentative Possibles which is directly in keeping with the Argumentation in language and the semantics of stereotype. We have demonstrated that the european discursive construction in le Canard Enchaîné's articles corresponds to a reconstruction of meaning as concerns the argumentative potentiel of linguistic entities about the notion of food. This work points to the peculiarity of the semantics mechanisms undertaking of this discursive construction of identity

Full textThe research dedicated to the normative position of the French language was done by professional or occasional observers in six national French newspapers. The aim was to provide an access to the idea of French language norms transmitted through epilinguistic discourses made public by the print media. In addition, based on comments and ideas collected, the study of extra-linguistic factors in the above-mentioned epilinguistic discourses was also in the scope of our interests. The reference lists corpus included daily and weekly national newspaper articles from Figaro, Valeurs Actuelles, Libération, Le Monde, L’Express and Le Nouvel Observateur. The analysis of epilinguistic discourses was firmly based on a qualitative study of elements that structure the unilingual French ideology (lexicographic, semantic, stylistic and contextual analysis, as well as linguistic and cultural interpretation). This analysis permitted to access the representation of so-called “good French” offered by these articles. This study also made possible to discover the opinions of French language ‘desecration’ supporters

Full textThe analysis of frontpage headlines on the basis of discourse analysis leads to think that they are a genre by themselves, a professional product and a specific discourse which borrows from sloganization and develops some influence on the reader. The journalistic discourse can echo the political discourse whose implementation does not lie in action but in language. It is a one-way road between headlines and readers and there is no interaction. The notions of representation, sense community and consensus emerge from the relationships between newspapers and readers. Newspapers' frontpage headlines reflect the general language in a specifically professional context. Their first function is semiological. They send readers graphic signals to which they give some meaning. Their main characteristics are concision and ellipsis. Among the stylistic features compounding, metaphors and metonymies are predominant. Furthermore, determiners are few and the associations noun + noun and adjective + noun are numerous. Headlines can be compared with indirect speech acts, which paves the way for relationships with readers that are based on pragmatics

Full textThis thesis analyzes the role that gender played in the media’s representation of French presidential candidates during the 2007 elections. It proposes a review of the mainstream national press (Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, Aujourd’hui en France, La Croix, l’Humanité, 20 minutes, Le Nouvel Observateur, Le Point, L’Express, Marianne) during the official campaign (from 9 April to 6 May) using discourse analysis to explain the paradoxical representation of the candidates’ gender: despite the fact that gender was central to the construction of the candidates’ image, the media’s coverage of the campaign largely sidestepped the issue. Our hypothesis is that the journalistic discourse is on the surface neutral but in fact relocates the representation of gender to its margins. Through an analysis based on the varying levels of enunciative involvement in journalistic discourse, we observed, in the first place, that the traditional analysis of gender stereotypes used to describe female politicians cannot account for the representations of Ségolène Royale, the first female presidential candidate from a mainstream party with a plausible chance of being elected. Second, we observed that in journalistic genres where the discourse is apparently neutral (portraits, summaries of televised debates, and editorials), the gender dichotomy is present but marginalized. Finally, in studying this marginalized presence of gendered language, we discerned a phenomenon of distancing through reported speech, in which journalists attribute to “real people” gender characterizations according to which female identity is seen as a foil to presidential power, a power characterized rather by traits associated with masculinity. Through this enunciative distancing, journalists can employ gender representations indirectly to explain the stakes of the campaign -- dismissing them as fallacious elements of public opinion but citing them nonetheless

Full textNoting that the city of Bejaia is characterized by multilingualism: Kabyle, Arabic and French, It seems interesting to understand how the coexistence of these languages is managed in the urban context. Indeed, our study attempts to determine the status and functions of the languages used by students from the Bejaia urban area. We are looking for an explanation of the operation areas of language use in Bejaia making allowances sociolinguistic representations. The goals we set for ourselves in our research are twofold: in practice, we try to identify the functions performed by each of the languages, as our field research is a crossroads of different languages. In terms of representation, the goal is to know the representations of students studying the values and hierarchies assigned to different languages. Our research also aims to identify the attitudes of high school students of Bejaia against the Algerian language policy in general, and the use of Arabic as a principal language of instruction at the university. To do this, we chose to conduct a survey of students in the city of Bejaia. We collected data not only quantitative but also qualitative, using two different methods. At first, we used questionnaires that informed us about the sociolinguistic profile of students, practices and linguistic representations. In order to complete the questionnaires, we conducted semi-structured interviews with some students. As the questionnaire was based on maintenance practices and linguistic representations of respondents. After analyzing the data, we tried to take stock of research and presented the results and their interpretation

Full textThe main objective of this doctoral thesis is the analysis of the role of a regional daily newspaper as a local social actor within a particular society: Reunion Island. More precisely, the present work is a monograph on le "Quotidien de la Réunion", in the context of a 21 year period (1976-1997). Within the general theoretical framework which has been adopted in order to make this case study, one is interested in the questions of the + building up; of events and news and of how newspapers deal with social movements and actions. In order to confirm the hypothesis that a local paper does fulfil a role of social actor facing social movements, we have applied the methods of discourse analysis to journalistic forms. This methodology may be regarded as essentially inspired by semiotics. We have analysed a corpus of articles and compared the accounts (by "Le Quotidien") of three movements : (I) the strong desire to save the + young ; "Quotidien" in 1977, (II) the support given to Télé Freedom in 1991 and (III) the demonstration of civil servants and students in 1997. The analysis of the argumentative and rhetorical processes which are specific features of the paper's editorial strategy permits us to ascertain its value system and its positions on the local scene, and also to emphasize certain contradictions and discrepancies between its editorial principles and its journalistic practices
