Abstract:
Rock-quarried wine presses were prevalent across the Mediterranean Basin throughout ancient times and particularly during the Late Roman and Byzantine ages. Archeological surveys have uncovered many presses across Israel. Overall, a ratio of ~5 m−1 has been recorded between treading floor area (in m2) and volume of collecting vat (in m3). A recent survey of two presses located at the transition zone between the semi-arid northern Negev, Judean Lowlands, and Southern Hebron Hills of Israel revealed a considerably smaller ratio between the treading floor and collecting vat. In addition, extensive rock exposures were located around the treading floors of the two presses. A 3D laser scanning revealed that the surrounding rock exposure formed a drainage network which flows to the treading floor. Moreover, indications for light modifications of the surrounding rock exposure were recorded for the two presses. In one of the presses, this modification was indicated by remnants of ancient plaster, which were found filling several gaps in the surrounding rock exposure. It is suggested that the purpose of the plaster was for allowing hydrological connectivity between the upslope and downslope edges of these gaps. In the second press, this modification included the chiseling of adjacent bedrock, for the purpose of, it is suggested, channeling runoff water to the treading floor. The findings suggest the intentional collection of raindrops falling on the surrounding rock exposure, together with those falling on the treading floor, which were drained as runoff into the collecting vat. The collected runoff could be used for domestic consumption in this dryland region, augmenting the provision of water for the local populations during the agricultural off-season.

Abstract:
Summary In a much-quoted passage of the “Natural History”, Pliny describes several wine press mechanisms. This description is of great historical importance, since it is the only such textual description of a vitally important class of technologies used for the production throughout the Roman Empire of both wine and olive oil, dietary staples in the ancient Mediterranean. Pliny’s text has been quoted and used as the basis for discussions of Roman farming and technological history for many decades. Yet it has never been properly understood in the light of related and recently published archaeological evidence, and close attention has never been paid to developing a precise translation, or to Pliny’s painstaking grammatical construction and word choices. A thorough and critical re-examination of the text reveals that modern scholars have routinely misinterpreted Pliny’s account of ancient press technology. In this paper, a new translation is offered, which more accurately aligns with archaeological and ethnographic evidence and which attempts to strip away the layers of modern interpretation, to rediscover previously ignored or misunderstood elements, and to restore the original sense of Pliny’s passage.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The mediatization of stock exchange activities has stirred a renewed interest in social sciences. This doctoral thesis tackles this topic through its historical development : it aims to describe the codification of a journalistic writing. In France, the stock exchange section has its Anno Dominici : on the 29th January 1838, the businessman and saint-simonian thinker Isaac Pereire launches a « Revue de la Bourse de Paris » in the Journal des débats. Twenty years later, each significant French daily has recruited a stock exchange chronicler. The main purpose of our work consist in identifying the factors that brought a shapeless text into a standard journalistic section. The subtitle of this thesis addresses three subsequent ambitions : to clarify the general setting that has allowed the creation of financial journalism, to analyze the establishment of a vintage form of “data journalism” and, then, to indicate that this older form of “data journalism” has been read as a set of data. The massive digitization of old newspapers has created the opportunity to study wider corpora. We developed an application, Pyllica, to scrap the collections of the French National Library and were able to store in a database all the weekly stock exchange sections published in the Journal des Débats from 1838 to 1870. The use of text mining techniques has allowed to determine precisely the evolution of stylistic and editorial motives. This thesis thus appears as a general contribution to the digital study of newspaper poetics

Abstract:
The links between press and literature are very tight. This statement is all the more obvious if one observes from an historical point of view both the Congolese literature, and the Congolese politics and society. From 1504 on, schools to teach how to read and write have been opened by Portuguese Catholic missionaries. Different kinds of publications, often related to religion, were printed during the following centuries. In 1926, the international Conference in Zoute, Belgium, states the necessity to promote the publication of literary works in African languages. The emergence of writing using French language results from three sociocultural facts: literature contests, organized by the Native Arts Friends, various publications in magazines, and the creation, in 1943, of the Star Library publishing house. But the colonial policy emphasizes above all elementary and practical teachings, unlikely to help literary talents stand out. It was not until the foundation of the monthly « Congolese Voice » (1945-1959), by the poet A. -R. Bolamba, that a literary platform became available to the « developed » ones. Another author, revealed in the press, deserves some attention: J. F. Lyeki, Regarding poetry, between 1960 and 1967, through literary circles and newspapers opinion columns, such as « Documents for Action » and « Academic Presence », authors managed to be published and were awarded literary prizes. During the Mobutu era, literature, at the start rather essay-oriented at his own initiative, ends up going back to a more artistic and cultural style in the 1970’s; yet after 1975, publications will come mainly from writers in exile. The first essays dealing with theater started in 1955 with A. Mongita, but this genre will not really flourish until the 1970’s. One name still stands out: M. Mikanza, whose most famous play is Trial in Makala (1977). As far as stories are concerned –novels, short-stories, tales-, one name prevailed during the 1970’s: B. Zamenga. Traditional values are then challenged in the face of modernism. Yet Zairian literature will not assert itself until references to authors - almost all from Lovanium University and mostly living abroad, such as V. Y. Mudimbe, G. Ngal, M. N. Kadima, P. Ngandu, M. Buabua wa Kayembe, S. Djungu, and Cl. Faïk Nzuji- were made in the press. Among literature critics, the work of A. Mbuyamba, in the review « Academic Presence », deserves to be praised

Abstract:
This work tackles the study of the material and discursive destiny of two old man-made textile factories in the Lyon area after their closing: the Tase factory based in Vaulx-en-Velin and the Rhodiaceta factory based in the 9th district of Lyon, which both belonged to the Rhône-Poulenc corporation until their closing in 1980.The starting point of this research was based on the fact that both factories were similar in many ways before their closing, yet haven’t followed the same path since then, neither according to space nor to speeches. We will therefore study the role of three discursive spheres in these differentiated paths from 1980 to 2013 –the civil sphere, the institutional sphere and the mediaarena- based on the analysis of their existence in the local media. We will analyze the local paper – Le Progrès - and the community press which told the stories of these old factories as well as the memories and heritage that are tied to their representation. This work is based on the analysis of a multi-scale evolving context which includes territory – economics and politics-, institutions –with the progressive extension of the notion of heritage-,and nation –the evolution of governments and of legislation. Finally, the media analysis is supplemented by semi-directive contemporary interviews of local players who work in these spheres. At the end of the day, this work questions the conditions in which a discursive representation of these old factories is supposed to have acknowledged them with a territorial identity. The local media have dealt with this issue from a certain past perspective, a creative reconstruction that fashioned this acknowledgement

Abstract:
This thesis studies the reception and the reintegration in society of Vietnam war veterans as they are represented in two American dailies, The New York Times and The Washington Post. To this comparison between the two newspapers are added the analyses of two weeklies, The Nation and Newsweek, and a bimonthly, National Review, which provide a complete range of the various point of views on the subject. Two periods stand out: from 1966 to 1970, the reintegration of the former soldiers seemed to be easy, according to the newspapers. From 1971 to 1978, the coverage by the media first intensified owing to the difficulties of reintegration that the Vietvets faced and dared to voice loudly for the first time; the press then appeared to progressively lose interest in them. The evolution, in the newpapers, of the representation of the veterans and of their reintegration mirrored the evolution of American society and economy. If both dailies a priori addressed the same kind of readers, the reality that they chose to present and distort through their ideological bias often differed. The thesis also tries to show how their representations may have helped or hindered the reintegration of Vietvets in society

Abstract:
This study was carried out in the context of a Ph.D thesis. It is based both on field work (surveys, studies of amphorae collected during surveys and during archaeological excavations) and on documentary research. First, the analyse of ancient sources, written and iconographic, attest to the importance of oil and wine as surplus commodities in this Mediterranean province. Investigated press elements furnish insight to the place of Cilician viticulture during Antiquity. The substantial number of these elements reinforce the assertions of ancient sources that wine was a signficant surplus commodity of this region. During our survey we identified several Roman-era kiln-sites in the region. Their presence demonstrates that Cilician transport amphorae, or maritime shipping containers, were produced to accomodate this trade. Analysis of amphora remains collected at the kiln sites and nearby excavations enabled us to construct a chrono-typology of six amphorae that were produced locally. Last, we compared our results with those of materials published at excavations conducted throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. This enabled us to trace the distribution patterns and commercial networks of Cilician surplus commodities. These data become crucial to our understanding of the place of Cilician wine trade in the wider Roman Mediterranean economy

Abstract:
Hipólito José da Costa became renowned as editor of Correio Braziliense, a periodical which he published during his exile in London, from 1808 to 1822. The most recent historiography in Portuguese has identified Hipólito as heir to the Portuguese enlightened reformism, but his publication´s discourse shows that he was moving in much wider circles. This thesis demonstrates that Correio Braziliense was inserted in a very broad textual network, with Anglo-American affiliation and transoceanic extent, whose main center of gravity and articulation was the British capital. The texts published by the Portuguese-Brazilian exile from the years 1808 to 1812, the period which is covered by this work, allows one to clearly distinguish his affiliation with a set of ideas which has no reference to the mental world of the Portuguese society and whose nexus can be found in the so-called whiggism, as well as in more radical aspects of British political thought.

José Antonio de Alzate y Ramírez is known for being one of the first Mexican journalists, scientists, literary critics and insurgents. The first chapter of this thesis offers a concise presentation of the author’s life and work and an overall review of the studies that were made of his Diario literario de México (1768), Asuntos varios sobre ciencias y artes (1772-1773), Observaciones sobre la física, historia natural y artes útiles (1787-1788) and Gaceta de literatura de México (1788-1795), from the year 1831 until this day. This work shows that his four newspapers have been studied mainly within the historical context of the creation of the Mexican nation and it demonstrates that the patriotic or proto-national intentions that were attributed to him deserve to be reconsidered. This thesis demonstrates that Alzate chose to produce a particular type of journalism somewhat similar to the French Journal des Sçavans (1665-1683) and Journal de Physique (1771-1773) that would allow him to contribute personally to the progress of science. Up to this day, no important study has been made comparing the prestigious French journals and Alzate’s publications. We are taking a first step in this direction as we highlight how his project appears to have been directly inspired by the two French periodicals, comparing the goals their editors shared and the subjects they explored. It will also be shown that Alzate’s periodicals present the essential elements that define most of the learned journals (“journaux savants”) published in Europe during the eighteenth century, as defined by Jean-Pierre Vittu. Finally, this thesis illustrates how Alzate adapted the model of the “journal savant” to the particularities of the society of New Spain. It focuses on the subjects of censorship, criticism and the lack of financial or institutional support that the Mexican journalist had to deal with. It also clarifies Alzate’s scientific attitudes as an author by examining his objective of belonging to the universal Republic of Letters and the specific purposes that its members were trying to achieve. It also presents a new definition of Alzate’s global scientific vision and explores the sources of knowledge he considered to be valuable in order to accomplish his goals as a “savant”.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the stone-carved architectural spiral fluted column from second-millennium B.C. Mesopotamia to the fourth-century A.D. Roman Empire, and establishes its relationship to technological devices such as water screws, screw presses, and other machines. Evidence from literary sources and archaeological records shows the increasing architectural use of the helical spiral during that time, particularly in structures such as theatres, nymphaea, colonnades and decorative gateways. The use of spiral designs on coins, sarcophagi, pottery and wall paintings is also discussed. The thesis presents: the mathematics of the spiral as applied in Mesopotamian architecture; spiral use in the Aegean Bronze and Iron Ages and the Greek and Roman worlds; and its use in technology and mechanical devices, specifically those of Archimedes and Hero. The conclusion summarises the evidence, demonstrating that the construction of the spiral fluted column evolved from that of the Archimedean water screw.

Abstract:
The paper retraces the negotiations undertaken by the Olivetan monks at the beginning of the 20th century for their return to the ancient abbey of San Miniato al Monte, which they had been forced to abandon in 1552 for the construction of the ramparts to defend the city. Given its location, other religious orders wanted to settle there, such as the Vallombrosans of Santa Trinita and the Cassinesi of the Florentine Abbey, but the Olivetans claimed their rights. So on 11th July 1924 the visiting abbot Benedetto Benedetti signed the deed of delivery to his regular family. The official entrance, disclosed by the town press, took place on Sunday 26 October 1924, and the resumption of the monastic life the following year, under the guidance of Don Gaetano Romagnoli, the first abbot of the restored Olivetan community.

Abstract:
The narrow understanding of freedoms of press and speech, adopted by Sir William Blackstone and Lord Chief Justice Mansfield, defined those freedoms as no more than liberty from a government-issued license or other prior restraint, with no liberty from punishment of sentiments once printed or spoken. In doing that, the last volume of Blackstone’s Commentaries in 1769 summarized a narrow common law definition of freedoms of press and speech that did not exist in common law. Mansfield’s decisions introduced a similar definition into the common law for the first time the year after that. Besides describing a new definition as ancient, both Blackstone and Mansfield described the related framework for prosecuting sedition as being ancient and universally accepted, when in fact it was a collection of unique rules adopted and manufactured seventy years before and recently revised. Blackstone and Mansfield were not declaring ancient law but were creating new law.

Abstract:
This chapter attempts to retrieve aspects of democracy that suggest a tension with the organizational impulses of ancient and modern constitutionism. Today, democracy is universally acclaimed as the only true criterion of legitimacy for political systems and its real presence is said to consist of free elections, free political parties, free press, and the free market. The specifications are so precise that the United States periodically dispatches experts to Central America to determine whether those requirements have been met. However, hardly anyone questions whether the self-styled “advanced industrialized democracies” really are democracies, and fewer still care to argue that “the people” actually rules in any one of them, or that it would be a good idea if it did.

Abstract:
After observations of many seismic disasters, let is found that many structures were just damaged slightly or even without any damage such as hospitals, high technology factories, computer generator rooms, but huge damage to internal installations was caused by earthquakes. Therefore, in addition to promoting the earthquake-resistant capacity of a structure, it is also important to ensure the safety of ancient objects and instruments in the structure. Structural control has been recognized as an effective and attractive method for preventing structural damage from earthquakes. In this study, shaking table tests of the high-end server equipment equipped with the multiple friction pendulum system (MFPS) were carried out to study the earthquake-proof benefit of the MFPS isolator. The MFPS isolator can not only shift the natural periods of high-end server equipments away from the rich period contents of earthquake motions, but also provide considerable hysteretic friction damping to absorb the input energy of earthquakes to insure the sensitive equipments unharmed during earthquakes.

Abstract:
Pressure drop has been used for more than half a century to control resonant pulsation in reciprocating compressor piping. Although avoiding these resonances is the preferred method, this is not possible in many high-speed/variable-speed installations. In these cases, resonant pulsation is often managed by using orifice plates to dampen the response. Helmholtz absorbers are an old technology, used to improve the acoustics of ancient Greek theaters and modern recording studios alike. Although their application in the field of piping acoustics has been well documented, this paper presents new ways in which they have not yet been applied. In this paper, experimental data is shown for a self-tuning Helmholtz absorber, or Side Branch Absorber (SBA) used to cancel a piping length resonance, and for a Virtual Orifice that is used to reduce cylinder nozzle pulsation. These devices open up new doors for controlling pulsation with reduced horsepower costs in reciprocating compressor installations.

"Ethos, Pathos and Logos: Rhetorical Fixes for an Old Problem: Fake News." In InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4154.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The proliferation of fake news through social media threatens to undercut the possibility of ascertaining facts and truth. This paper explores the use of ancient rhetorical tools to identify fake news generally and to see through the misinformation juggernaut of President Donald Trump. Background: The ancient rhetorical appeals described in Aristotle’s Rhetoric—ethos (character of the speaker), pathos (nature of the audience) and logos (message itself)—might be a simple, yet profound fix for the era of fake news. Also known as the rhetorical triangle and used as an aid for effective public speaking by the ancient Greeks, the three appeals can also be utilized for analyzing the main components of discourse. Methodology: Discourse analysis utilizes insights from rhetoric, linguistics, philosophy and anthropology in in order to interpret written and spoken texts. Contribution This paper analyzes Donald Trump’s effective use of Twitter and campaign rallies to create and sustain fake news. Findings: At the point of the writing of this paper, the Washington Post Trump Fact Checker has identified over 10,000 untruths uttered by the president in his first two years of office, for an average of eight untruths per day. In addition, analysis demonstrates that Trump leans heavily on ethos and pathos, almost to the exclusion of logos in his tweets and campaign rallies, making spectacular claims, which seem calculated to arouse emotions and move his base to action. Further, Trump relies heavily on epideictic rhetoric (praising and blaming), excluding forensic (legal) and deliberative rhetoric, which the ancients used for sustained arguments about the past or deliberations about the future of the state. In short, the analysis uncovers how and ostensibly why Trump creates and sustains fake news while claiming that other traditional news outlets, except for FOX news, are the actual purveyors of fake news. Recommendations for Practitioners: Information systems and communication practitioners need to be aware of the ways in which the systems they create and monitor are vulnerable to targeted attacks of the purveyors of fake news. Recommendation for Researchers: Further research on the identification and proliferation of fake news from a variety of disciplines is needed, in order to stem the flow of misinformation and untruths through social media. Impact on Society: The impact of fake news is largely unknown and needs to be better understood, especially during election cycles. Some researchers believe that social media constitute a fifth estate in the United States, challenging the authority of the three branches of government and the traditional press. Future Research: As noted above, further research on the identification and proliferation of fake news from a variety of disciplines is needed, in order to stem the flow of misinformation and untruths through social media.

Abstract:

This paper introduces a series of sustainable timber construction using wood-wood connections, which are driven from environmental requirements. These constructions are based on geometries like origami and free-form instead of standard structural elements. In addition, to predict the structural behaviour, the simplified numerical methods for accurately modelling are used. The aim of these case studies is to better explore the value of wood-wood connections as inheritance of ancient culture and extend research on their integration into design processes. Through the design, manufacturing and assembly stage, the connections are investigated as a driver for architectural forms. The utilisation of these innovative connections with minimised metal connectors ensures the rapid, precise and simple assembly process. With in-depth study and innovation of the ancient wood-wood connections, experience in prefabricated timber structure not only offers new geometrical opportunities, but also expands the understanding of integration of ancient and modern cultures.

Abstract:
Earthquake ground motions often result in significant seismic disasters. Strong ground motions will not only cause damage, but may also cause the collapse of structures. People have to face up the suffering from the earthquake damage, and the indirect loss which may be more serious than the damage itself. For example, the antique breaks in museum, and the equipment damages in hi-tech industries are often in huge loss. Therefore, in addition to promoting the earthquake-resistant capacity of a structure, it is also important to ensure the safety of the ancient valuable objects and the instruments in structures. For this reason, this study is aimed at a new damped rolling type base isolation system named the ball pendulum system (BPS) to be installed under the motion sensitive equipment and proceeding all related studies. The isolation device can isolate earthquake from buildings or equipments in any direction by rolling motions and damping materials. This study has conducted a series of component tests and shaking table tests for examining the behaviors of materials and earthquake proof benefits. From the experiment results, it is found that this device can reduce more than 80% of acceleration response under earthquakes with peak ground acceleration of 450 gal. So, the new rolling isolation system with a damping material can be recognized as a feasible and promising way in mitigating the seismic response of equipment.

Abstract:
"The contemporary direction of natural pedogenesis/soil science is ancient anthropogenic impact and climate fluctuations changes. A large number of settlements in the river valleys are unique objects with a long history of development and modern soil cover formation. We studied the soil between the dwellings for a small settlement Zarya of the Bronze Age. The settlement was part of the economic zone of cattle breeding (horses and cows and sheep) of the large early Bronze Age fortified city Sarym-Sakla, one of the country's Proto-Iranian Cities of the Trans-Ural Plateau. The activity of ancient societies changed the terrestrial ecosystem functioning at macro and microscales. Increased heterogeneity of microrelief forms led to the diversity of soil cover. We found the unusual soil types on microelevations and microdepressions. The enrichment of the cultural layer with phosphorus compounds was revealed, and the hypothesis of the formation of a ""reverse"" ratio of chernozems-solonetzes of the soil cover of the low above-floodplain terrace as a consequence of several stages of ancient anthropogenic pressure and climatic aridization was confirmed in this area. We focused on the determination of organic carbon content, magnetic susceptibility, salt composition, cation exchange capacity, and the distribution of mobile phosphates along the soil profile as possible indicators of ancient anthropogenic influence. The degree of soil properties changes during the anthropogenic impact is commensurate with their transformation in the natural evolution of centuries and even several millennia. Past anthropogenic changes leave a mark in the history of the development of the soil cover predetermining the modern danger of the degradation phenomena. Moreover, we draw parallels in the history of ecosystems formation and outlined tasks for further research."

Abstract:
In ancient Greece, knowledge was not neatly contained in distinct disciplines and leading scholars moved freely among different fields. The influence of reductionism, which began with Aristoteles and has continued ever since, created disciplines with precise boundaries. With such disciplinary approach, each field evolves independently as a specialized set of tools of analysis. The question arises: are these boundaries still necessary nowadays or must we look on the teaching/learning process more transdisciplinary? In this contribution, one of the possible ways will be shown and evaluated, how to model and apply an appropriate solution. Key words: transdisciplinary models, multidisciplinary models, cognitive education, neuroscience, holistic approach.

In ASME 2013 International Pipeline Geotechnical Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipg2013-1960.

Full text
Abstract:
The bi-national pipeline Loma de la Lata (Argentina)-Talcahuano (Chile) belonging to Gas del Pacifico, crosses the Andes at Latitude 37.1° South (Buta Mallin pass), following the Lileo river valley. In the region, there are large ancient landslides within an area of about 50 km2, which have been attributed to Holocene glaciations and seismic activity. In the winter of 2005, when snow limited the access to the area, it was found a pressure loss, that later was attributed to a landslide in a sector of the south bank of the valley. The adiabatic expansion generated a considerable volume of frozen soil around the pipe. The following summer it was studied the characteristics of the sliding and analyzed different solutions of the affected section. The geotechnical study showed details of the slipped area and its relationships with ancient landslides. It was found by comparative analysis of aerial photographs that an old slide about 1 km3 was not fully reactivated. The general morphology has remained unchanged at least in the last 50 years, when the oldest aerial photography was taken. As additional verification, it was found that a small set of cascading ponds located in the slipped mass, has remained stable at that time, bearing the influence of the great 1960 Mw = 9.6 Valdivia earthquake. It was identified tension cracks delimiting the slipped area that was a modest portion of the historical landslide. Geotechnical parameters were estimated by back analysis of the land involved and it could establish a model for sliding mass process. A general analysis of long-term stability took into account the influence of distant earthquakes such as the subduction zone, which has a recurrence of about 100 years and other local seismic sources. Prior to define the most appropriate solution, a 250 meters long trench was dug preventively releasing the pipeline from the terrain to avoid new deformations. Among the solutions considered were the construction of an absorption system with movement monitoring, or the relocation of the trace on the opposite bank of the river. It was decided to adopt the latter solution due to the difficulty of ensuring the stability of the terrain and the inaccessibility during the winter. It implied an additional river crossing and consequently, the need to monitor the stability of the channel to the river erosion.

Abstract:
Grand Canyon National Park is all about time and timescales. Time is the currency of our daily life, of history, and of biological evolution. Grand Canyon’s beauty has inspired explorers, artists, and poets. Behind it all, Grand Canyon’s geology and sense of timelessness are among its most prominent and important resources. Grand Canyon has an exceptionally complete and well-exposed rock record of Earth’s history. It is an ideal place to gain a sense of geologic (or deep) time. A visit to the South or North rims, a hike into the canyon of any length, or a trip through the 277-mile (446-km) length of Grand Canyon are awe-inspiring experiences for many reasons, and they often motivate us to look deeper to understand how our human timescales of hundreds and thousands of years overlap with Earth’s many timescales reaching back millions and billions of years. This report summarizes how geologists tell time at Grand Canyon, and the resultant “best” numeric ages for the canyon’s strata based on recent scientific research. By best, we mean the most accurate and precise ages available, given the dating techniques used, geologic constraints, the availability of datable material, and the fossil record of Grand Canyon rock units. This paper updates a previously-published compilation of best numeric ages (Mathis and Bowman 2005a; 2005b; 2007) to incorporate recent revisions in the canyon’s stratigraphic nomenclature and additional numeric age determinations published in the scientific literature. From bottom to top, Grand Canyon’s rocks can be ordered into three “sets” (or primary packages), each with an overarching story. The Vishnu Basement Rocks were once tens of miles deep as North America’s crust formed via collisions of volcanic island chains with the pre-existing continent between 1,840 and 1,375 million years ago. The Grand Canyon Supergroup contains evidence for early single-celled life and represents basins that record the assembly and breakup of an early supercontinent between 729 and 1,255 million years ago. The Layered Paleozoic Rocks encode stories, layer by layer, of dramatic geologic changes and the evolution of animal life during the Paleozoic Era (period of ancient life) between 270 and 530 million years ago. In addition to characterizing the ages and geology of the three sets of rocks, we provide numeric ages for all the groups and formations within each set. Nine tables list the best ages along with information on each unit’s tectonic or depositional environment, and specific information explaining why revisions were made to previously published numeric ages. Photographs, line drawings, and diagrams of the different rock formations are included, as well as an extensive glossary of geologic terms to help define important scientific concepts. The three sets of rocks are separated by rock contacts called unconformities formed during long periods of erosion. This report unravels the Great Unconformity, named by John Wesley Powell 150 years ago, and shows that it is made up of several distinct erosion surfaces. The Great Nonconformity is between the Vishnu Basement Rocks and the Grand Canyon Supergroup. The Great Angular Unconformity is between the Grand Canyon Supergroup and the Layered Paleozoic Rocks. Powell’s term, the Great Unconformity, is used for contacts where the Vishnu Basement Rocks are directly overlain by the Layered Paleozoic Rocks. The time missing at these and other unconformities within the sets is also summarized in this paper—a topic that can be as interesting as the time recorded. Our goal is to provide a single up-to-date reference that summarizes the main facets of when the rocks exposed in the canyon’s walls were formed and their geologic history. This authoritative and readable summary of the age of Grand Canyon rocks will hopefully be helpful to National Park Service staff including resource managers and park interpreters at many levels of geologic understandings...
