Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Metal forming press is one of the most commonly used manufacturing machines. Every day, millions of parts are produced by metal forming ranging from battery caps to automotive body panels. Therefore, even a small improvement may add to significant corporative gain. Currently, the metal forming presses can be divided into two categories: mechanical presses and hydraulic presses. The former is fast (high speed presses may reach up to several thousand shots per minute) and energy efficient (the large flywheel eases the impulsive force), but lacks flexibility. On the other hand, the hydraulic presses are flexible (their motions can be programmed) and accurate, but are expensive to build and to operate. Recently, there are mechanical presses driven by servomotors. They could perform as flexible as hydraulic presses with high speed. Nevertheless, they are even more expensive to build and to operate. This paper introduces a new design of mechanical press whose performances are programmable, including the trajectory and the velocity of the stroke, and yet, it is relatively inexpensive to build and to operate. The key idea of the new design is a 2-degree-of-freedom seven-bar linkage mechanism driven by a large constant speed motor and a small servomotor. First, the kinetics and kinematics of the design are presented including the feasibility conditions, mechanical advantage, as well as the torque and power distribution between the two motors. Next, a number of simulation results are given. The design (parameter) optimization is also carried out using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Based on computer simulation, it is shown that the new design is indeed very attractive.

Abstract:
Abstract Process engraver and printer Emery Walker was a pivotal figure in the English, American, and continental European Private Press Movement from the 1880s until his death in 1933. This article looks at his theories for the typography, design, and production of books, and how those theories were developed by key designers and close associates of Walker such as William Morris, T. J. Cobden Sanderson, and Bruce Rogers and through the practical teaching of figures such as J. H. Mason and Edward Johnston. It examines how the theories were then taken up by the exponents of fine printing from the early 20th century through to the 1930s, focusing on the presses of Bernard Newdigate, Harry Kessler, Harold Curwen, and Francis Meynell. From these presses, and also via Stanley Morison and the Monotype Corporation, Walker’s theories are shown to have spread into mainstream book publishing in the first half of the 20th century. The article considers questions of whether the improvement in the readability of books in the early 20th century has had a continuing impact in book publishing, and makes suggestions how to access the incunabula referenced by the designers discussed, as well as collections of private press books and other early 20th-century fine printing.

Abstract:
With the constitutionalization of libel law, an increasingly important issue for the press has been which defamation plaintiffs will be regarded by courts as public figures. Public figure status carries with it a significantly higher level of fault - actual malice - than that which most private figure plaintiffs must demonstrate. One persistent question has been how the status question should be decided when the plaintiff is a corporation rather than a natural person. This study analyzes recent case law and formulates a tentative solution to the corporate public figure problem.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether differences in media exposure regarding corporate corruption appear to influence companies’ anti-corruption disclosures. The authors also examine whether the level of press freedom in firms’ home countries affects disclosure and the impact of media exposure in different ways. Design/methodology/approach The authors use Transparency International’s 2012 ratings of anti-corruption disclosure by the 105 largest multinational firms in the world, press freedom assessments from the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders, and media exposure measures based on a search using the Dow Jones Factiva database. The authors assess relations using regression analysis controlling for other firm-specific factors potentially impacting disclosure choices. Finally, the authors consider the potential effect of other country-level factors. Findings The results indicate that media exposure, using either an existence or an extensiveness measure, is positively related to differences in sample companies’ anti-corruption disclosures. The authors also find that disclosure is more (less) extensive where home country press freedom is less (more) restricted and that reduced press freedom appears to reduce the impact of media exposure on the disclosure. The authors further document that press freedom levels explain more difference in anti-corruption disclosures than other country-level factors potentially influencing the practice. Research limitations/implications Because the investigation is limited to very large international firms for a single year, the degree to which the findings apply to other companies and time periods cannot be assessed. Further, the authors cannot determine how the findings would hold using an alternative disclosure rating scheme. Finally, the authors do not assess whether differences in the source of media exposure impact the findings. Social implications The findings suggest that, to the extent that improved anti-corruption disclosure reflects greater corporate attention to corruption issues, the media may be a powerful player in addressing this social ill. Unfortunately, the results also indicate that media efforts may not be sufficient to bring about change in locations where the freedom of the press is limited. Further, the results suggest that disclosure appears to be a function of exposure to social and political exposures, and the authors therefore question whether it will actually lead to improved corruption performance. Originality/value The study is the first to consider the impacts of media exposure and press freedom on corporate social disclosures.

Abstract:
Are press releases on Corporate Governance price sensitive? What is the impact of Corporate Governance information on stock prices of banks? This paper addresses these questions by applying an event study methodology on 70 press releases published by the Euro area banks listed on the Eurostoxx banks Index, from 2007 to 2016. Systemic shocks are explored as well idiosyncratic ones. Our results show that investment decisions are significantly but negatively influenced by the disclosure of a press release on corporate governance as if this kind of news leads investors to perceive the banks’ prospects negatively. The best of our knowledge this is the first paper that investigates European banks press releases on corporate governance. Findings are relevant for banks’ management and their disclosure policy. Nonetheless, further research is needed to investigate differences and similarities between an area of governance disclosure and another.

Durán, Mañes Ángeles. "Nuevas tendencias en la comunicación corporativa. Aplicación a un modelo de 'corporate' universitario." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Jaume I, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/10472.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to understand the strategies orienting press relations in organizations that are recognized for their good corporate reputation and their impacts on this asset. The press was chosen for analysis because it is common to all organizations and due to its significant influence over other publics, even in a scenario of mobile web and social media. To answer the central question, this study is grounded by qualitative research in an attempt to understand the relationship between organizational relationships and corporate reputation. In this analysis, five organizations with outstanding reputation in Brazil, according to Reputation Institute, will be assessed: Nestlé, Johnson & Johnson, Mercedes-Benz, Petrobras and O Boticário. The goal is to understand whether press relations contribute to strengthen positive reputation and, if so, identify the communication strategies used by these companies. All organizations studied showed a high degree of quality in the relationship with the press, but the main finding is that personal contact is the best way to create bonds of trust with this audience, which strengthens the quality of the relationship and the potential to impact positive corporate reputation.

Full text
Abstract:
From a public relations perspective, the effectiveness of a press release is measured by the extent to which the media coverage matches the original intent of the piece (Wilcox et al., 2015). The present study examined press releases over the past five years from the top 25 corporations in the United States in order to ascertain the extent to which news media match these public relations efforts. Press releases and articles were coded for the presence of various discourses (technology, science, quality, sales, change, ethics, innovation, excellence, and crisis) business and social marketing practices, supplementation, and referential similarity. The results revealed that the discourses were the most frequently matched component between press releases and articles and that while articles never provided a direct link to the original press releases, they did reference the release the majority of the time. Business marketing, social marketing, and supplementation were rarely present in the press releases and even less so in the articles, which suggests a filtering of corporate bias by news media. Discussion focuses on practical implications for the field of corporate public relations.

Abstract:
This research looks at how corporates manage crisis communication using press releases and social media channels. It aims to find out how the case corporations Nordea and  Samsung executed their crisis communication during the years 2016 and 2017.The dissertation draws upon literature on organizational crisis and reputation. It also reviews how companies could possibly react to a crisis, how press releases are usually formatted, and finishes with utilization of social media during the crises. In 2016, Samsung became the center of a crisis by the exploding “Note7” phones and Nordea was being mentioned in the “Panama Papers” for tax evasion. The data of the crisis cases has been collected using online ethnography and analyzed with the support of interviews with four crisis specialists. The interviewees were asked semi-structure questions in order to analyze the data  from a professional perspective. The dissertation did not only cover the content used, but also studied which channels where used and the timing of the statements. The findings revealed that Samsung took the “Note7” case seriously and had a bigger quantity of crisis messaging than Nordea on the “Panama Papers” case. Based on the messages, Samsung’s crisis communication length was five months and Nordea’s four. Samsung’s crisis communication showed major gaps in their timeframe and Nordea’s was more coherent. Nordea used long press releases with complex language compared to Samsung’s advertisement and international style. Samsung used a lot of infographics in social media compared to Nordea’s factual messages. The dissertation is relevant in regard to previous studies on this subject, which have shown utilization of press releases and social media during a corporation crisis. Therefore, the  dissertation contributes with new empirical understanding.

Moris, Karen. "Les médias en tant que mécanisme de gouvernance d'entreprise." Thesis, Dijon, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010DIJOE007.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research had to contribute to the question: are media a corporate governance mechanism ? After doing a literature review, three research questions were asked. First, the question about the role of press as a corporate governance disciplinary mechanism was asked, then as a corporate governance mechanism with a view to creating stakeholder value, lastly, as a corporate normative governance mechanism in a neo-institutional view. Each question was the subject of one essay. First, the efficiency of press to reveal frauds of firms before an official authority was analyzed. In this purpose, logistic regression and an examination of articles of press was done. Second, the influence of press on the Danone Group’s direction was studied with a case study between 1996 and 2008. Third, to understand the influence between several kinds of press and their role in the normalization and the circulation of ideas and practical experiences about corporate governance, a case study was done also. First, the efficiency of press as a corporate disciplinary mechanism is not always perfect. By assuming that press maximizes its profits, the French press chooses the firms to cover and the frauds to disclose. It’s more a press which informs as a press which investigates. The complementarity of corporate governance mechanisms is confirmed in the efficiency of the governance system. Second, press is an efficient mechanism in a stakeholder value creation perspective. It manages to influence CEOs to search to create stakeholder value rather than shareholder value. Third, currently we notice an homogenization of organizational forms about corporate governance. It could be explained by the role of press as a corporate governance normative mechanism in a neo-institutional perspective

Abstract:
In recent years Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been the subject of much attention and the concept has been referred to as a global movement and mega-trend, which has resulted in a long and diverse history in the academic literature. However, little attention has been paid to the part media plays in the construction and popularization of CSR. The aim of the thesis is to draw insights on how media frames and present the concept of CSR. In order to examine this a quantitative content analysis has been performed on two leading business papers in Sweden, during the years 2005-2014. The thesis builds on a previous study by Grafström and Windell (2011) in which they analyze how CSR is defined in English business press. The findings of this thesis suggest that corporations are the main actors in framing CSR and that Swedish business press mainly stress CSR as a management idea, containing several arguments for incorporating CSR. As oppose to Grafström and Windell (2011) our study presented some differentiating results, which might be explained by different institutional environments.

Abstract:
As with all their assets, organizations need management when it comes to their reputation. Having a successful corporate reputation is closely related to how corporations manage their existing reputation. The main components of long-term corporate reputation are categorized as appealing to emotions, product and service quality, vision and leadership, financial performance, workplace environment and social responsibility (Fombrun et al., 2013: 253). Among these components, financial performance is positioned as one of the main factors that come to the fore especially in crisis situations. Financial performance is also an effective factor in building trust in all relationships established with the target audience. Therefore, organizations should reflect their financial performance with a good corporate communication strategy in order to create a solid corporate reputation based on trust. The Covid-19 pandemic, which affected the whole world in 2019, negatively affected many corporations in Turkey economically. In the face of this situation, which can be described as a global crisis, corporations carried out corporate communication activities that support corporate reputation management in order to turn the crisis into an opportunity. It is seen that especially the financial performances of the corporations are highlighted among these activities carried out with the aim of strengthening the positive image of the corporations in the eyes of their stakeholders and the public. Within the scope of this research, the press releases published by five companies operating within the automotive sector in Turkey, among the sectors given in the Sectoral Impact of Covid 19 on the Economy report of Global Times (2020), were examined through the content analysis method in the context of financial performance indicators. The purpose of the research is to reveal how organizations reflect their strategies, which include the elements that reflect their financial performance in their press releases, to the public. As a result of the research, the financial performance indicator that took the most place in all the press releases examined was determined as “competitive advantage”.

Abstract:
From the hot dog vendor located near a national monument to a multinational corporation with operations and significant assets around the world, we are all faced with decisions about addressing terrorism. Since the events of 9/11, enormous amounts of financial and intellectual capital have been invested to develop security responses to potential terrorism threats. Beyond specific, focused initiatives — most visibly increased airport security — a plethora of risk models have been (or are being) developed. Ostensibly, these models attempt to address the basic risk proposition: Risk = Frequency * Severity.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes the benchmark analysis of two probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) codes developed for structural reliability evaluation of primary loop recirculation system (PLR) piping of a boiling water reactor (BWR) in which the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been observed frequently in recent years. The two codes PASCAL-SP and PEPPER-M used for benchmark analysis have been independently developed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and TEPCO systems Corporation (TEPSYS), respectively. After the validity of the procedure of analysis in these codes was conformed, the reliability assessment of PLR piping containing cracks due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) was carried out according to some regulatory requirements and the rules on fitness-for-service in Japan. The analytical results from both codes were well in agreement. Through comparison of the results, influences of some items and input parameters on failure probabilities were identified.

Full text
Abstract:
This report introduces techniques involving novel calculation methods developed by the Electric Power Research Institute and Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation [1] that can be used to develop an improved understanding of welding factors affecting substrate weld heat input and dilution. These improved calculation methods are especially warranted in ASME BPVC Section XI repair and replacement welding activities such as mitigation of hot cracking (dilution control) and optimization of temper bead welding (heat input control). Various parameter sets are tested to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new calculation methods and how they can be refined in future studies to further improve accuracy. Additionally, this report highlights the limitations associated with the ASME BPVC Section IX theoretical heat input and power ratio calculation methods widely used in the welding industry for control of substrate heat input and weld dilution. Weld trials are performed in this study to demonstrate the limitations and determine proper precautions to take when using the calculation methods.

Abstract:
Large drop in creep rupture strength in the long-term is a noticeable phenomenon for high Cr ferritic creep resistant steels, and the neglecting this phenomenon may result in overestimation of 100,000h creep rupture strength, and allowable stress. A committee at Japan Power Engineering and Inspection Corporation was organized to evaluate long-term creep strength and to review current allowable stresses of high Cr ferritic creep resistant steels. Life prediction method for high Cr ferritic creep resistant steels with tempered martensite microstructure is discussed. Appropriateness of current allowable tensile stress regulated in METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) Thermal Power Standard Code has been assessed on a modified 9Cr-1Mo steel (ASME Gr.91) and KA-SUS410J3 type steels. KA-SUS410J3 is a material specification in METI Thermal Power Standard Code and corresponds to ASME Gr.122. The validity of existing allowable stress was shown on a modified 9Cr-1Mo steel. Those for KA-SUS410J3 type steels, however, have been revised to the lower values.

Financial Stability Report - September 2015. Banco de la República, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/rept-estab-fin.sem2.eng-2015.

Full text
Abstract:
From this edition, the Financial Stability Report will have fewer pages with some changes in its structure. The purpose of this change is to present the most relevant facts of the financial system and their implications on the financial stability. This allows displaying the analysis more concisely and clearly, as it will focus on describing the evolution of the variables that have the greatest impact on the performance of the financial system, for estimating then the effect of a possible materialization of these risks on the financial health of the institutions. The changing dynamics of the risks faced by the financial system implies that the content of the Report adopts this new structure; therefore, some analyses and series that were regularly included will not necessarily be in each issue. However, the statistical annex that accompanies the publication of the Report will continue to present the series that were traditionally included, regardless of whether or not they are part of the content of the Report. In this way we expect to contribute in a more comprehensive way to the study and analysis of the stability of the Colombian financial system. Executive Summary During the first half of 2015, the main advanced economies showed a slow recovery on their growth, while emerging economies continued with their slowdown trend. Domestic demand in the United States allowed for stabilization on its average growth for the first half of the year, while other developed economies such as the United Kingdom, the euro zone, and Japan showed a more gradual recovery. On the other hand, the Chinese economy exhibited the lowest growth rate in five years, which has resulted in lower global dynamism. This has led to a fall in prices of the main export goods of some Latin American economies, especially oil, whose price has also responded to a larger global supply. The decrease in the terms of trade of the Latin American economies has had an impact on national income, domestic demand, and growth. This scenario has been reflected in increases in sovereign risk spreads, devaluations of stock indices, and depreciation of the exchange rates of most countries in the region. For Colombia, the fall in oil prices has also led to a decline in the terms of trade, resulting in pressure on the dynamics of national income. Additionally, the lower demand for exports helped to widen the current account deficit. This affected the prospects and economic growth of the country during the first half of 2015. This economic context could have an impact on the payment capacity of debtors and on the valuation of investments, affecting the soundness of the financial system. However, the results of the analysis featured in this edition of the Report show that, facing an adverse scenario, the vulnerability of the financial system in terms of solvency and liquidity is low. The analysis of the current situation of credit institutions (CI) shows that growth of the gross loan portfolio remained relatively stable, as well as the loan portfolio quality indicators, except for microcredit, which showed a decrease in these indicators. Regarding liabilities, traditional sources of funding have lost market share versus non-traditional ones (bonds, money market operations and in the interbank market), but still represent more than 70%. Moreover, the solvency indicator remained relatively stable. As for non-banking financial institutions (NBFI), the slowdown observed during the first six months of 2015 in the real annual growth of the assets total, both in the proprietary and third party position, stands out. The analysis of the main debtors of the financial system shows that indebtedness of the private corporate sector has increased in the last year, mostly driven by an increase in the debt balance with domestic and foreign financial institutions. However, the increase in this latter source of funding has been influenced by the depreciation of the Colombian peso vis-à-vis the US dollar since mid-2014. The financial indicators reflected a favorable behavior with respect to the historical average, except for the profitability indicators; although they were below the average, they have shown improvement in the last year. By economic sector, it is noted that the firms focused on farming, mining and transportation activities recorded the highest levels of risk perception by credit institutions, and the largest increases in default levels with respect to those observed in December 2014. Meanwhile, households have shown an increase in the financial burden, mainly due to growth in the consumer loan portfolio, in which the modalities of credit card, payroll deductible loan, revolving and vehicle loan are those that have reported greater increases in risk indicators. On the side of investments that could be affected by the devaluation in the portfolio of credit institutions and non-banking financial institutions (NBFI), the largest share of public debt securities, variable-yield securities and domestic private debt securities is highlighted. The value of these portfolios fell between February and August 2015, driven by the devaluation in the market of these investments throughout the year. Furthermore, the analysis of the liquidity risk indicator (LRI) shows that all intermediaries showed adequate levels and exhibit a stable behavior. Likewise, the fragility analysis of the financial system associated with the increase in the use of non-traditional funding sources does not evidence a greater exposure to liquidity risk. Stress tests assess the impact of the possible joint materialization of credit and market risks, and reveal that neither the aggregate solvency indicator, nor the liquidity risk indicator (LRI) of the system would be below the established legal limits. The entities that result more individually affected have a low share in the total assets of the credit institutions; therefore, a risk to the financial system as a whole is not observed.
