Full textThis thesis focuses on the contemporary practice of political journalism in Québec. More precisely, it investigates the practice of parliamentary journalists online and specifically on social networking sites. Since now, few studies have analysed how political journalists use social media platforms, particularly in non-US contexts and outside of election campaigns. This work aims to fill this gap in journalism studies and political communication literatures by asking three main questions: (1) how and to what extent do political journalists use internet and social media in their professional practice; (2) what are their motivations to do so; (3) how these uses and motivations influence norms and standards of political journalism? Andrew Chadwick’s (2013) hybrid media system theoretical approach guided us through our study of political journalism. This perspective allowed us to conceptualize political communication processes as a hybridization of old and new technologies, genres, practices and norms. To better understand political journalism in the digital age, we conducted a case study of the practices of parliamentary journalists of the National Assembly Press Gallery in Quebec. We developed an innovating mixed methods design which includes a quantitative content analysis of the messages posted by the parliamentary correspondents, on the microblogging site Twitter, and a series of 28 semi-structured interviews with these journalists. Based on these observations, we draw an overall picture of the parliamentary journalists’ uses of internet and social networking sites. Then, we examine in closer details a few dimensions of their practice online, paying specific attention to their uses of Twitter. First, we analyze how and to what extent they convey information in real time. We also investigated the reasons that motivate them to do so. Our data reveals that instantaneity is not only the result of technological affordances. Intense competition in the media industry, a constant quest for visibility and organizational pressures were cited as key motivations to convey information immediately, which became the norm. Second, we studied journalists’ openness to public participation in the construction of political news. More specifically, we looked for elements of transparency, dialog and gatekeeping sharing in the messages conveyed by Quebec political journalists on Twitter. Except for transparency, these elements were rare. The specificity of parliamentary journalism and the way journalists conceived their audience were cited as barriers to the public’s participation in the construction of political news. Finally, we examined political journalists’ relationship with the normative ideal of objectivity, a central norm of North American journalism. We observed the presence of self-promotion and, to a lesser extent, opinion and humour in the messages published by parliamentary journalists on Twitter. This thesis documents an emerging practice during its development. It presents original data on Quebec political journalists’ practice on social networking sites. It describes the complex and hybrid character of their practice. It also shows how economic and organizational factors contribute to shape the uses of technological tools. In a context of crisis in the media industry, competition and organizational pressures encourage practices of immediacy and self-promotion. Despite the interactive potential of social networking sites, journalists’ attitude toward public participation in the construction of political news remains relatively closed, with a few individual exceptions. Political journalists are still attached to the norm of objectivity, but their online practices also shows elements of subjectivity. These continuities and transformations described by Quebec political correspondents are part of a broader debate in the journalistic community. Our work aims to contribute to this discussion by shedding light on a quickly evolving and highly uncertain context.

Full textThe media industry was scrutinized in Quebec by multiple consultations under diverse forms since the 1960s. This research examines particularly a type of consultation, which prevailed twice, in 1969 and in 2001 - the parliamentary commission - and compares reports submitted by social agents by studying them as political speeches and by analyzing their categories of arguments. The recurring themes are classified in three types of arguments: democratic, economic and professional. At the core of concerns for all, journalists, big publishing conglomerates and independent or community press companies is the role of the State. Thus, opinions fall into line either with a republican version or with a liberal version of the role of the State and the economy of the media. In the end, we shall notice that the state is unwilling to take action and we speculate if the parliamentary commission is an adequate forum for democratic discussions on these issues.

Full textThe principal objectives of this thesis are to look at the media's ineptness to "communicate" and to understand how a political press, in this case the feminist press of France and Quebec, is caught up in a paradoxal of the media market witch forces them into self-demise. Using a critical and feminist theory of communication, our analysis of the media is inscribed in a social dynamics context. This sociological analysis of the press was conceived in order to look into several functions of a newspaper such as a market product and a social enterprise. This methodology goes beyond a mere content analysis common to most media researches. By comparing the French and Quebec feminist press from 1970 to 1990, we're able to gain several insights as to why this press is driven into a strategical cul-de-sac. The thematic of this press, their partisan discourse, their internal organization, their relation to the media market and the images that they portray, are but some of the elements that explain their precarious situation. But their real ephemerality can best be explained through their political function. By analysing the press coverage of the "Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal" tragedy, we're able to assert that the written press participates in a global "over-informational-under informing" process. The press thus loses its function as a critique of the politics and in this process, recuperates and neutralizes the autonomous voice of women

Full textOn October 4th 2010, the Canadian weekly news magazine Maclean’s published an issue about corruption in Quebec (“Quebec : The most corrupt province in Canada”), which caused controversy not only in Quebec but throughout the whole of Canada. While some people supported the writers, others argued that they were participating in Quebec bashing, a form of denigration of Quebec and Quebecers. Moreover, the debate quickly spiraled from one about corruption to one that encompassed questions of politics, language, and identity. Because of the extent and intensity of the debate, the controversy can be considered as an event that brought to light social tensions between groups. Drawing on the controversy surrounding Maclean’s issue about corruption in Quebec, this thesis focusses on the social phenomenon of Quebec bashing. Specifically, the aim of this research was to use a multidimensional approach to social discourse analysis in order to examine the construction of Quebec bashing, identify its sociodiscursive components, and investigate the reactions it provoked in public space. The analysis was conducted on four levels. Firstly, on a lexicological level, a definition of (Quebec) bashing, based on the use of the expression in Quebec francophone newspapers, is presented. Secondly, an argumentative analysis is used to study the organization of the discourse on which the controversy is based and to present the arguments raised by those debating whether or not to qualify this discourse as Quebec bashing. Thirdly, from a sociohistorical point of view, the way past events are used in the debate, as a reflection of the confrontation between different collective memories, is examined. Finally, on a sociodiscursive level, the discursive processes used to attack others are explored. Ultimately, this analysis defines the phenomenon of Quebec bashing, considers it from a sociodiscursive point of view, and contributes to the existing body of work on discourse confrontation.

Full textThis thesis deals with the methods of learning and criticizing the rules of public communication by student representatives during the student strike in 2012 in Quebec. Taking into account the particular characteristics of student organizations and the conditions in which student representatives learn the rudiments of the roles of press officer and spokesperson, this paper proposes to study the modalities of learning and criticism of rules of public communication. New actors who do not benefit from the same human and financial resources as government and media actors, but with whom they publicly debated during the 2012 student strike. How did they learn the rules of public communication in an intense and animated public debate which subsequently degenerated into a social crisis? As a result of the 2012 experience, these individuals became much more known and recognized, and gained notoriety. We want to understand how the different ways of learning about the rules of public communication depend on the particular environment and the context in which the student representatives were at that time. We also want to focus on the content of learning and criticism to better understand what kinds of rules are learned and what are their strategic functions. The research is based on a qualitative interview analysis of the public affair program 24 heures en 60 minutes, on RDI, and a series of semi-conducted interviews with student representatives. Full textThe 2012 Quebec Maple Spring (printemps érable, in French) and the 2011 Chilean Winter (Invierno chileno, in Spanish) began as 'simple' demonstrations of students contesting tuition-fee increases and lack of accessibility to higher education. After weeks of mobilization, they became broad social movement coalitions that criticized the commodification of social rights and a restricted democracy, while proposing alternatives. Based on a dialogue between these two cases, this research illustrates how, despite marked differences between Chilean and Quebec societies, the movements nevertheless shared similarities in their collective action tactics and strategies. In both cases, the explosion of these movements was not happenstance: student organizations learnt from prior experiences and prepared the ground to make visible their movements in the public sphere by forging links with the trade unions and civil society organizations. The careful communications strategies and framing developed by student organizations successfully linked various social actors to the mobilization. Finally, government contempt and police repression faced by the movements proved to strengthen their resolve and their plight in public opinion. These broad social movement coalitions have sparked public debate in Chile and Quebec about the right to education, social rights and the very notion of democracy. There have been short-term impacts on public education policies and long-term impacts on the political spectrum with the emergence and consolidation of new generational political projects. Keywords: Student movement; Maple Spring; Chilean Winter; Quebec; Chile; Social movement coalitions.

Full textDespite their best intentions, progressive groups contribute to the reproduction of social inequalities within their internal structure. Even in groups using pro-feminist practices intended to manage how speech is shared among participants, there sometimes are blatant inequalities in the voices being heard – or not – depending on gender and other socioeconomic factors. ASSÉ (Association for Solidarity among Student Unions) implements a number of measures to rebalance how speech and power are being shared, including alternating speaking rights between men and women, using a “moodwatcher” during meetings, allowing for non-mixed caucuses, and holding Women’s congresses. I have conducted twelve semi-structured interviews with people who are or have been involved in ASSÉ to better understand how they judge the relevance and effectiveness of these practices. While all of them believe that these measures help amplify women’s voices on an individual level, men and women have different opinions about the transformative and emancipatory potential of these practices. Men tend to highlight these measures’ re-socialization or counter-socialization effects, while women are more likely to point out their limitations. They argue that these measures fail question the gendered division of activist labor that prevails in ASSÉ. Furthermore, the interview data suggest that the costs and benefits associated with these practices are gender differentiated. Although they are designed to promote women's voices, they tend to symbolically and materially benefit to men. Meanwhile, women are responsible for the labor involved in justifying and applying these practices, and, more broadly, for providing feminist analyses within the organization. Women participants lament the fact that this invisible and undervalued work prevents them from concentrating on "political" tasks. I sketch the potential of (pro)feminist speech-sharing practices to demonstrate how conversation is indeed "political" and to hightlight the political nature of the gendered labor of listening, caring and organizing.

Full textUsing the public career of school bullying (intimidation) in Québec, this research invites to explore the moral economy of childhood: the production, circulation and use of norms, roles, values and feelings related to children. A vast documentary and diachronic cross analysis was conducted to offer a new understanding of the dialogical co-construction of this public problem, to which participate the media, scientific and political spheres. The analysis suggests that the public problems’ trajectories might be cyclical rather than linear. Inside Québec, the theme of ‘school violence’ appears in the late 20th century through ‘taxage’, understood as the extortion or robbery perpetrated in the course of juvenile sociability. The Québec ‘school violence’ thus emerges in a political context of fight against ‘street gangs’ and teenage criminality. At the beginning of the 21th century, a reconsideration of youth offenders judicialization comes to oppose the repressive will of the state - it leads to a delegitimization of the police and judicial apparatuses dedicated to overcome ‘taxage’. Meanwhile, groups of ‘moral entrepreneurs’ extend the definition of unacceptability when it comes to youth aggressivity and redefine it in relation to new indisciplines that require measures of prevention and support. Henceforth, concerns move beyond the matters of security and dangerousness previously prominent. The public scenes that were investigated became at that period dominated by a feeling of vulnerable childhood. Leaving behind the risks that poses the youth, the problem’s rhetoric rearranges itself around the risks that weigh in on them. Psychological integrity, social dignity and liberty are major components of the moral economy of childhood and the basis of this ‘moral crusade’ - a social phenomenon that allows us to perceive the configurations of contemporary normativity.

At the end of the 19th century, the birth of the commercial newspaper contributed to the emergence of a new genre, the reportage, and the development of literary journalism in the Western World. Yet, newspapers in French Canada evolved in a particular context, very different from the more adventurous settings that contributed to reportage’s impressive reputation in North American and French culture. In Quebec, journalists traveled and worked on a vast territory sparsely populated by the French-speaking population. This thesis shed lights on this context and presents the history of literary journalism in the province, from Arthur Buies’s “Deux mille deux cents lieues en chemin de fer” to Gabrielle Roy’s “People of Canada”, including lesser-known works such as Jules Fournier’s pieces on the Franco-Americans and Eva Senécal’s incursion into the lives of log drivers. From the 1870s to the 1940s, the study of reportage reveals a great number of articles, most of them unknown, published in different newspapers. The absence of reportage from the history of literature is at the heart of this thesis. By examining literary journalism in French Canada alongside the most widely used definitions of the “grand reportage” and American literary journalism, this study highlights some of the reasons that account for this absence, suggesting at the same time that the fragility of the corpus also encompasses the uniqueness of this body of work located at the intersection of literary culture and field journalism.

Full textOur research project, “What about Canada? The Changing Dynamics of the Indexing Theory: A Content Analysis ofThe Globe and Mailand The Toronto Star, ” is dealing with the theory of indexing in a Canadian context. Therefore, the main problem illustrated by Bennett and Pfetsch (2018) is that indexing theory removes “alternative voices, ” instead of including these “new” voices in order to balance the sources. In this new fractured environment, it is more complex than before to balance different perspectives and opinions because of the involvement of different actors in the political arena. The main argument of this thesis is that it is imperative totest the theory of indexation and to adapt its central elements to the new political environment. This means an inclusion of this new environment to the basic assumptions that will include alternative narratives. It is in this context that we decided to analyze the issue of immigration policies in Canada and its indexing by the media. Consequently, this thesis is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between the media and official political authorities in Canada, in particular, by addressing the question of the place of alternative narratives in Canadian journalistic discourse.

Full textThis study addresses the impact of a definition paradigm shift on the use of anglicisms in the French-speaking written press. Built around a diachronic analysis (2000-2015) of the numerous differences linked to a change of definition, it also ventures into the impact such a change may have on comparative analysis focusing on geographical origin (France vs Quebec) or the nature of the newspaper (“of record” vs “popular”). It aims at contributing to the literature though two different aspects:(1) This study is the only conceptual work to highlight what sort of impact a change in the definition of “English borrowing” can have on the frequency of anglicism usage. It shows through an opposition with/without French equivalents, that an analysis focused only on anglicisms for which French provides an equivalent – those Forest and Boudreau (1998) consider “unnecessary” or “erroneous” (Villers, 2009) – reveals an important drop in the usage frequency compared to an analysis based on all anglicisms. It also unveils that, out of three anglicisms extracted from my corpus, two have no equivalents in French and are de facto unavoidable.(2) This research is, to my knowledge, one of the first in comparative study to show, with empirical evidence, how definition affects not only usage frequency, but also dictates the way newspapers develop over time depending on different criterion. Based on two different angles of comparison (geographical origin and nature of the journal), I also show that a change in the definition leads to different evolution trajectories, different relationships between our newspapers and different diachronic variations. To answer my research questions, I built one of the largest corpora ever used for a study on anglicisms. With more than 330 million words, it gathers all the articles published by four different newspapers for the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015: Le Monde and Le Parisien for France, and Le Devoir and La Presse for Quebec. I also used two lists of keywords composed of 5416 and 2934 anglicisms taken from two general dictionaries (Le Petit Robert 2016 and Le Multidictionnaire de la langue française–4th edition 2013) and two specialized dictionaries (Höfler’s Dictionnaire des anglicismes–1982 and Le Colpron, dictionnaire des anglicismes–4th edition). By going far beyond what previous studies have done, it offers a more advanced overview than usual.First, my results show that the usage frequency is generally low (0.72% for all anglicisms; 0.28% for anglicisms with equivalents only; 0.44% for anglicisms without equivalents only) both in France and Quebec, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies. However, I find clear differences in terms of results for each analysis, as the frequency rate for anglicisms with equivalents is 1.5 times lower than the frequency rate for anglicisms without equivalent. This proves that the definition of the very concept of “anglicism” directly influences the frequency of usage. Second, I observe that this change of definition also affects comparative analysis focused on specific criteria such as the geographical origin or the nature of the newspapers. My study thus reveals great nuances in terms of trend over 15 years according to which definition is used: for instance, results for Quebec newspapers are slowly decreasing over time when anglicisms with equivalents are concerned, – especially for Le Devoir, whereas they increase when anglicisms do not have an equivalent. When it comes to the nature of the newspaper, Le Parisien, which is the newspaper that uses the most anglicisms of the four, forms a much more heterogeneous duo with La Presse when only anglicisms with equivalents are taken into account. They also give prominence to Le Devoir and Le Monde whose evolution trends are close to identical when the broader definition of Anglicism is used but a bit more asymmetric when equivalents come into play

Full textThesis abstract : The rise of journalism at an industrial scale from the XIXth century was mainly based upon the economic alliance between several interests and investments sources, and which are now challenged in the digital economy context. This research aims at contributing to a better understanding of the contemporary transformations of this practice of discursive production, together with changes taking place within media organizations as well as strategies and discourses at stake. In both France and Quebec, this research focus on two media groups, Ouest-France and Québecor, notably involved in newspapers, and confronted with digital issues since the mid-1990s. Both business models and stakeholders interests are changing, while journalism does not manage to ensure economic independence. Its subordination position is somewhat reinforced through models and apparatuses gradually rolled out. This ongoing transformation is built through both organizational changes and discourse. This doctoral research was based on cross-empirical approaches, using document analysis within and around the two groups, as well as discourse analysis. The latter was based in particular on interviews with executives, managers and information workers. This research design and the junction of these approaches reveal that the transformation of journalism and its economy appears not as mere goal to com, but as a process already at work. By leaving some records and traces, covered by this doctoral work, this transformation builds as well upon investments and discourses. Keywords : Journalism, Internet, Web, Digital media, Newspaper publishing, Press -- Economic aspects, Business Models, Discourse analysis.
