The cone pressuremeter is an in situ testing device comprising a pressuremeter mounted behind a cone penetrometer of the same diameter. Previously reported tests had indicated that the cone pressuremeter can provide measurements of soil strength, stiffness and in situ stress. The study presented in this thesis is aimed at developing methods of interpretation of the cone pressuremeter that can be applied with confidence to a variety of soil types. In geotechnical engineering, it has proven difficult to obtain reliable soil parameters for stiff clays. Laboratory testing results are often scattering due to the fissures and slickensides in these soils. Alternatively, in situ techniques offer a means to test the soils in place. This device was used to test the soils in both a self-boring and a simpler, non-boring mode (pre-bored or PBPM tests). The Miocene stiff clay was unique in that was sensitive and lacked of

Abstract:
The self-boring pressuremeter which is inserted into the ground without disturbing the surrounding soil has two drawbacks. Skilled operators are needed to insert the probe into the ground without disturbing the soil, and the self-boring process requires a jetting action or a rotating cutter and drilling mud. One method of simplifying the pressuremeter installation procedure is to install the probe in a full displacement manner. A solid tip is placed oh the end of the probe and then the pressuremeter is pushed into the ground in the same manner as a cone penetrometer. This research project was

To reliably determine the lateral load-deflection behaviour of a piled foundation, a load test is commonly required. In-situ geotechnical tools, such as the cone penetrometer and the pressuremeter, have been successfully used to predict the lateral capacity of piles without the need for a load test. This research project investigates some of the variables involved in performing a pressuremeter test, and a procedure to predict the load-deflection relationship of laterally loaded piles is developed. A decade has passed since the development of the self-boring pressuremeter (SBPM). Even though the device has been recognized by the geotechnical engineering profession as having high promise for evaluating in-situ stress-strain behavior of soils, its use is limited. In large part, this is due to the fact that there are important unanswered questions about the SBPM test. One of the major issues concerns the influence of drainage in the soil as it is sheared. It had also been suggested that if the pressuremeter was capable of sufficient expansion, the interpreted soil properties would be those of the soil beyond the zone of disturbance. Abstract:
This thesis addresses the analytical interpretation of selfboring pressuremeter testing curves in sands. Emphasis is placed on the development of a new approach to analyze the data and hence to derive reliable predictions of the basic soil parameters, namely the friction angle, the lateral stress and the shear modulus. The new methodology of interpretation relies on a “curve fitting” technique to match the experimental and idealized (model) curves, from which a set of fundamental soil parameters are derived. These parameters are linked to each other in the framework of the cavity expansio
