Abstract:
The development of the Prester John legend and matters associated with it are complex, and no significant work of book length in English has appeared on the subject since V. Slessarev's Prester John. The Letter and the Legend (1959). The recent publication of a collection of texts and interpretive essays will therefore be warmly welcomed. The texts are among those published by Zarncke in the Abhandlungen der königlichen sāchsischen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften, vii (1879), and include the famous “letter” of Prester John, together with a note by Hamilton on additional Latin manuscripts that have since come to light. The essays comprise both reprints of work that has appeared over the past five decades and six fresh studies that now see the light of day for the first time.

Abstract:
Abstract Anthropologists such as Mary Helms have noted a historical linkage between the phenomena of perceived distance and perceived power. In this article I apply this paradigm to the history of European imperial expansion between the twelfth and the sixteenth century. In the Middle Ages, European popes and kings imbued the mythic ruler Prester John with great power in part because he was unseen and believed to live at a great distance. By associating the Mongols, and the Ethiopians after them, with Prester John, both of these peoples became an embodiment of this distance/power paradigm in Western European eyes. Latins hoped that the Mongols or Ethiopians would use their “power” to assist the West in their crusading battles in the Holy Land. When the Portuguese and Spanish began their voyages of expansion, they applied the same paradigm to the peoples they encountered in Asia, Africa and the Americas. When distance between Europe and these other continents was breached, however, the Iberian view of the others’ power diminished. Simultaneously, the Spanish and Portuguese perception of their own power increased as they, not “Prester John”, became the conquerors of distance.

Abstract:
More makes many references to the “Orient” in his writings. A consistent view of More’s “Orientalism”, which reveals a strong interest in the existence of Eastern Christians, can be obtained from examining the evidence of scattered references to “the East” in More’s Collected Works (mostly written after Utopia), particularly to “Ethiopia”, the “Men of Inde” and the “Land of Prester John”. These references indicate that even almost twenty years after Utopia was published, More was still referring to the Orient in essentially medieval terms: that far from being an exception, More’s geographical world view was essentially similar to that of his more educated contemporaries, and that the discovery of the America had only a very “blunted impact” on More’s geographical understanding. Further evidence of the More Circle’s interest in Eastern Christians is provided by John More’s 1533 Preface to his translation of Damião de Góis’s Legacy of Prester John.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine the depiction of mental illness with elite athletes. Mental illness has long been a sensitive object in the public's eye, but in recent years that has started to shift and the subject has destigmatized. More and more people are open and talk about their inner problems. But in one group in society the development has not been up to pace, and that is elite athletes. The study has also looked at the difference between tabloid and daily press. The theoretical framework was constructed by using the agenda setting theory, the framing theory, theories of media logic and the thoughts of news evaluation. The method used in the study was critical discourse analysis, and used in the way through out by Norman Fairclough and his three dimensional modell. A total of 38 articles from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter, Svenska dagbladet, Aftonbladet and Expressen was analyzed. The analysis found that the papers tend to portray mental illness as a negative major problem of today's society. A majority of the articles analyzed tended put the athlete aspect of the person in limelight, rather than letting the athlete just be a suffering person. They way the papers achieved to sustain the image of being a unbeatable hero by reminding the audience about the athletic achievements won, when the athlete was presented in the article. Keywords: Johan Franzén, Jenny Rissveds, mental illness, depression, concussions, concussion, eating disorder and eating disorders.

Abstract:
This popular writer, born in Thüringen, belongs to the XIXth century feminine literature. The success she obtains when her novels were published in serial numbers in the family periodical “Die Gartenlaude" aroused many reactions. If the readers were enthusiastic as she made dream and tried to make women's condition better, the literary critics express a more balanced opinion. Marlitt was not a very well-known even if a fex studies have been written about her. She was praised, and then despised. In 1949, the Thüringen became an eastern "land" and all evidence of her had to disappear. Her work was downgraded as "trivialliteratur". On the occasion of remembrance festivities linked to Marlitt's life, the press devoted a number of articles about this writer's image whose name has become a legend. So have her novels which, no doubt, remind of fairy tules. Cinderella, sleeping beauty, the ugly duckling, all names and titles which remind us of her as well as her heroines. Shall we keep of her the biased image given by the periodical press through expressions used to strike the readers or shall we allow her to be acknowledged as a true writer? A new attempt to assess her that began a fex years ago seems. Indeed, to obtain the opposite result. Marlitt has become a touristic cult object and her career as a writer semmes to be forgotten

Abstract:
In the 17th century, trade and war are deeply related (Pocock). Thus, authors from thatperiod gave a great importance to the links between conflicts and money. This PhD aims at understanding how the idea of money, as a precious metal, influences Colbert’s, Vauban’s and Locke’s thinking about the question of the enrichment. It further studies the implications of this approach for economic policy and social relations. These authors can be considered as« heterodox » in opposition to the orthodoxy of Adam Smith who sharply criticized their investigation of an appropriate quantity of money needed to ensure the good functioning of an economic system. In this framework, four questions are analysed. The first one discusses the social effects of a monetary economy in the form of the appearance of a conflict between the landed men and the moneyed men, that ultimately leads to the establishment of a civil government. The second one underlines the link between social relations and the required monetary policies: shall measures favour merchants’ interest or shall they maintain social stability? This brings the reader to the third question, which is to define the role of the government and its means of action. The government must ensure that an appropriate quantity of money, maintain a trade surplus and make money circulate. This can be achieved through a monetary stability or by implementing fiscal reform. Finally, the last question revolves around the role of international trade. According to these authors, it is mainly a mean allowing wealth which is created inside the country, to circulate. Besides, international trade is the only way to have inflows of precious metal, thus increasing the quantity of money in the country

Junqua, Amélie. "Joseph Addison et le langage." Paris 7, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA070049.

Full text
Abstract:
Our analysis focuses on Joseph Addison's conception and practice of language, as exposed in his periodical essays and more generally his prose. If Addisonian periodicals have been variously interpreted, it has seldom been considered how they could be also read as a possible popularization of Locke's theories on words, or more generally as a transmission of linguistic theories and cultural attitudes towards language to a vast readership (both in Europe and in America, and well until the XIXth century). We therefore endeavour in a first part to recreate Addison's social and cultural 'milieu,' to consider thé various conceptions of language it exposed him to, and to appreciate the respective influences of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Our second part deals with the peculiar status Addison bestows upon John Locke, the latter becoming a philosophical landmark as well as an intellectual façade or mask for Joseph Addison; and questions the assumption that Addison wrote primarily as a popularizer. Our third part is devoted to Addison's practice and observation of language - his obsessive concern for signs, his amateur attempt at establishing a semiotics of urban space and sartorial codes - which yet rarely complies with Lockean theories. Addison's paradoxical interpretation and practice of linguistic theories lead him to the unsolved - and unsolvable - dead-end of ambiguity. This position however provides him with unbounded powers of literary creation, endlessly dividing yet enriching his periodical essays

Abstract:
The University of Michigan Press, with support from the Mellon Foundation, asked John Lavender, of Lavender Consulting, to conduct a review of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Humanities E-Book collection (HEB) following its launch on Michigan’s new Fulcrum platform. ACLS-HEB is an online collection of over 5,400 high-quality humanities books from over 100 publishers. Now that the market for e-books has matured, part of the review was a comparative study of e-book platforms run by publishers, university presses and e-book vendors; 17 platforms were selected. The review looked at the key features offered by each platform, how they handled searching, content delivery, displaying results, ability to view and download and other key features, there was no attempt to judge the value of the content. Following this review, Michigan Press felt that it would be beneficial to share the results with the wider community. As well as being of interest to publishers, the review will also be relevant for librarians making purchasing decisions and vendors selling e-book services. In addition to synthesizing the results of the e-book platform review, this paper presents a librarian’s perspectives on e-book assessment criteria. Courtney McAllister, Electronic Resources Librarian at Yale University’s Law Library, describes the importance of attributes such as accessibility compliance, library branding, and metadata. Library collections are shaped by a plethora of concerns and criteria. This paper seeks to outline some key elements to consider as part of e-book platform decision-making.

In ASME 2018 13th International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2018-6367.

Full text
Abstract:
Self-piercing riveting has been widely used in vehicle body manufacturing to join aluminum alloys or aluminum to steel. However, it is difficult to rivet ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) because of its resistance to piercing of the rivet. In this paper, a thermally assisted self-piercing riveting (TA-SPR) process was proposed to improve riveting of the UHSS, through locally preheating the UHSS sheet using an induction coil prior to the traditional self-piercing riveting (SPR) process. An experimental system consisting of inductive heating apparatus, conventional self-piercing riveting equipment and coupon transfer mechanism was established and the steps, e.g., preheating, coupons transfer and riveting, were automatically conducted at preset schedules. Based on experiments with this system, the effects of heating current, heating time and coil heating distance on riveting of AA6061-T6 and DP980 were examined systematically by metallurgical analyses and mechanical tests. It was found that an appropriate combination of heating current and heating time, e.g., 0.5s at 600A, could produce crack-free joints having 77.8% higher undercut and 24% higher lap-shear strength, compared to results obtained using a conventional SPR process.
