Pretensioned spherical reticulated mega-structure is studied in this paper. The cable arrangements and support styles of the main structure are first introduced. The static stabilities including the buckling mode and ultimate load of the pretensioned spherical reticulated mega-structure are then investigated by the ANSYS software. The influences of the key parameters such as the rise-span ratio, height of the 3D trussed beams, and the pretension value of cables on the structural stability are studied. And the optimal cable pretension values of the structures with different cable arrangement styles and different rise-span ratios are also obtained.

Abstract:
The dynamics of chain drives is a complex issue due to the polygonal effect and the multiple successive impacts that take place. The combined effect of these phenomena leads to discontinuities in the systems velocities giving rise to transversal and longitudinal vibrations on the chain spans. To investigate the pretension effect on the drive dynamics, a tensioner is applied to a generalized chain drives multibody model developed and implemented in a computational code by the authors. In this model, the clearance revolute joints formulation is used to handle the dry contact between all drive components. The pretension changes the characteristics of the contact pairs by enforcing a continuous contact with only a small number of contact losses. When no pretension is used, the contact is characterized by a sequence of short duration contacts. The strands of the pretensioned chain vibrate with higher frequency but smaller amplitude in comparison to the non-pretensioned system.

This paper explains the utilisation of finite element model to analyse the ballistic limit of aluminium alloy 7075-T6 impacted by 8.33 g with 12.5 mm radius rigid spherical projectiles. This numerical study was compared with the results obtained experimentally. During impact, the targets were subjected to either non- or uniaxial- pretension and the projectile travelled horizontally to the target. It was observed that pretensioned targets were more vulnerable, which reduced the ballistic limit. The existence of harmful failures owing to pretension impact was ascertained and compared with the non-pretension targets.

Springback forecasting of sheet formation is constantly remarkable problem in the métier, due to their influence the great in the definitive shape of the product. Study presents effects of pretension in tow rolling direction (0, 45 degree) on the springback behavior of the (Brass 65-35) sheet under V-die bending by an experimental. The pretension ranges from five different pretensions levels starting from 11% to 55% from total strain in each rolling direction by increment of 11%. used in punching that was performed at a constant deformation velocity of (5 mm/min) then bent on a 90° V-shaped die for the springback evaluation. The results from experiment indicate that the springback increase with pretension ratio and the springback in 45 degree is higher in rolling direction.

Abstract:
Background Most posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction techniques use a tibial bone tunnel, which results in an acute bend in the graft as it passes over the posterior portion of the tibial plateau. Hypothesis The tibial inlay technique will result in lower graft pretensions, less laxity, and less stretch-out after cyclic loading. Study Design Controlled laboratory study. Methods Graft pretensions necessary to restore normal laxity at 90° of knee flexion (laxity match pretension) and anteroposterior laxities at five knee flexion angles were recorded in 12 fresh-frozen knee specimens with bone-patellar tendon-bone posterior cruciate ligament graft reconstructions using both techniques and two femoral tunnel positions. Results When the graft was placed in a central femoral tunnel, the tibial tunnel reconstruction required an average 15.6 N greater laxity match pretension than the tibial inlay reconstruction. There were no significant differences in mean knee laxities between the tibial tunnel and tibial inlay techniques at any knee flexion angle; both reconstruction techniques restored mean knee laxity to within 1.6 mm of intact knee values over the entire flexion range. Conclusions There was no important advantage of one technique over the other with respect to the biomechanical parameters measured.

Abstract:
Compared with the wide application of the membrane structures, the pretension measuring techniques for membrane structures have developed far more slowly. Further studies to search for a high-precision pretension measuring method which is reliable in theory and convenient for operation are not only necessary but also urgent. With the help of the finite element method, two important characteristics, the principles of “Stress Superposition” and “Stiffening Effect of Stress”, are discovered and summarized in this article. The characteristics relate to the relationships between the pretensions of a stretched rectangular membrane with fixed boundaries around, the out-plane displacements at the central point of the membrane and the normal uniform loads applied on the membrane. Based on these two characteristics, a new method to measure the pretensions of membrane structures is proposed, which is called “Numerical Measurement” in this paper. In the final part of the paper, a series of experiments are reported to validate the correctness of the method. The comparisons between the results of the method and those of the experiments are carefully made, which show that the two groups of results agree with each other very well. The results of numerical simulations and experiments prove that our method is a reliable method, and the measuring results are of high precision.

Abstract:
Abstract Flex fatigue behaviour of plastic optical fibres (POFs) with the diameters of 0.2 and 0.3 mm under different pretensions is measured with fatigue life curve by flexometer. The fatigue sensitivity coefficient is calculated by the linear fitting curve of normalised stress versus logarithm of bending cycles. The residual modulus is investigated during the flex fatigue processes. The results exhibit the exponential relationship between applied pretension and numbers of bending cycles at break. It is indicated that the flex fatigue of POFs might be sensitive with high swing angle or swing speed. There is an evident loss of modulus for two POFs with pretensions of 4 and 10% of ultimate tensile strength during 10-times bending cycles. The values of residual modulus of two POFs almost keep constant after 10-times bending cycles.

As a inclined mega-grid suspend-dome, the prestressing constructi of Dalian gym is very complex. Full-process analysis for the pretensioning scheme should be done before construction. Compared with other pretension methods, a relatively proper scheme of stretching radial cable is put forward and analyzed using construction full-process simulation. The length of active cables without stress is controlled by changing temperature, so pretension is put on cables; Cable tension and removing of temporary support system are simulated using birth and death technology, therefore the structure response of different construction stage and in which stage removing temporary supports is proper are acquired, which provide referenced data for controlling construction safety and precision.

Abstract:
The effect of rigid ends is considered in the formulation of a general two-node cable element for the analysis of cable-supported structures. The stiffness matrix of the catenary cable element was derived as the inverse of the flexibility matrix, with allowances for self-weight and pretension effects. In modeling the cables of suspension bridge, distinction is made between single cables (e.g., stay cables and hangers) and multi segment cables (e.g., main cables). The unstressed length of each cable element in terms of the pretension force is determined by a trial-and-error procedure prior to structural analysis. Cable shape analysis was conducted to determine the configuration of main cables for cable-supported bridges under the dead loads. It was demonstrated that the effect of rigid ends cannot be ignored for taut cables, that is, cables with large pretensions. Further, the cable element derived can be reliably used in the analysis of cable-supported bridges, regardless of the sag magnitudes.

Abstract:
A structural analysis method is proposed in this paper for cable-beam composite structure with a large number of cable elements; it can improve computational efficiency and accuracy. Firstly, we use a structural division method to divide the whole cable-beam structure into inner cablenet system and edge cablenet-beam system. Because inner cablenet is a pure cablenet structure with given shape and topology, balance matrix analysis method is used to help obtain the best pretension distribution of it with the evenness as objective. For edge cablenet-beam system, with obtaining equilibrium forces of inner cablenet’s pretensions as goal, an iterative pretension losses compensation calculation combined with nonlinear finite element method and balance matrix analysis method is used for edge cablenet to adjust its pretension distribution and make the whole cablenet system keep its preset ideal shape under influence of beams’ deformations. Because edge cablenet-beam system has a lot less cable elements than overall structure, its nonlinear finite element calculations are much easier and faster than those for the whole cable-beam composite structure. In order to verify the above method’s validity, it is used for a spaceborne cablenet deployable antenna example, and the computed results indicate that the method is feasible.

Abstract:
Mooring lines are the most commonly used station-keeping systems for floating platforms as they are easy to install and relocate. The mooring lines are usually pre-tensioned so as to use their energy absorption to reduce the platform motions and thereby, to lower the forces in the lines. To decide on the preliminary design of the platforms, it is necessary to investigate the restoring behaviour of the mooring systems for various parameters. In this study, two different mooring configurations with and without mooring line in wave heading direction are considered for determining its behaviour for various pretensions in the lines. A MATLAB code named QSAML has been developed using quasi-static approach to compute the restoring forces of the mooring system. The code is validated with experimental tests and used in this study. It has been observed that with increase in pretension of the mooring line, restoring performance of the mooring system can be improved. The maximum permissible excursions by mooring system in the wave heading direction are found to be more for relatively lower pretension values.

Abstract:
The bond between prestressing (PS) steel and concrete plays an important role in pretensioned concrete members because the pretension force is directly transferred from PS steel to concrete by cutting or releasing the PS steels at the end of the members. While in capacity design approaches, designing for bond is considered to be a question of adequate strength along the bar length, in performance-based design approaches, the level of deformation as well as bond strength must be known and the bond-slip curves may give enough information. The purpose of this paper is to derive bond-slip curves for various tensioning forces within Korean design Code experimentally. For this purpose several series of tests have been conducted with different cover depths and tensioning forces. A realistic bond-slip curve is proposed which may be the base for more rational design of pretensioned concrete members.

The examples he outlines are derived from a Sardinian context and illustrate how the ‘colonial’ pretensions of the heritage industry alienate the local residents from their monumental past and, as a consequence, how indifference led into oblivion.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the numerical outcome of applying three different well-known mooring design approaches to a floating wave energy converter, moored by means of four catenary lines. The approaches include: a linearized frequency domain based on a quasistatic model of the mooring lines, a time domain approach coupled with an analytic catenary model of the mooring system, and a fully coupled non-linear time domain approach, considering lines’ drag and inertia forces. Simulations have been carried out based on a set of realistic combinations of lines pretension and linear mass, subject to extreme environmental conditions. Obtained results provide realistic cost and performance indicators, presenting a comparison in terms of total mooring mass and required footprint, as well as the design line tension and structure offset. It has been found that lines’ viscous forces influence significantly the performance of the structure with high pretensions, i.e., >1.2, while there is acceptable agreement between the modelling approaches with lower pretensions. Line tensions are significantly influenced by drag and inertia forces because of the occurrence of snap loads due to the heaving of the floater. However, the frequency domain approach provides an insight towards the optimal design of the mooring system for preliminary designs.

Abstract:
The ArgumentLike many controversies in science, the one between Freud and Jung is overloaded with ad hominem arguments despite the incompatibility of such arguments with the pretensions of both sides to attain scientific ad rem validity. Unlike natural scientists, Freud and Jung regarded their own ad hominem arguments as relevant to general and impersonal truths. They practically legitimized such a use claiming to have a clinical basis for the rejection of the opponent's objections by a de-validating analysis of the opponent's personality as a whole. The argument of this paper is that the de-validating strategy was neither an inevitable psychological outcome of the intricate interpersonal relationships in analytic situations nor the logical consequence of any clinical or scientific psycho-analytical discovery. It followed from the epistemological invalid pretension to have a general theory of mind which could explain by mental analysis the existence of “unreasonable opinions,” and the application of the same principles to the opinion that the theory itself is unreasonable. Such a pretension, apparently specific to mystical traditions in theology and metaphysics, was deeply rooted in the modern epistemological tradition. The paper examines the impact of the different branches of that tradition on Freud and Jung's respective ideologies, theories, and practice, including the ad hominem malpractice.

Abstract:
The bending behavior of T-section beams composed of a glulam web and an upper cross-laminated timber flange was studied. The influence of two fundamental factors on the bending strength and stiffness was considered: the wood species used for the webs and pretensioning with unbonded tendons. Sixteen specimens with a 9 m span were tested until failure: eight of them were nontensioned (4 Picea abies webs and 4 Quercus robur webs) and the other eight were pretensioned using threaded bars with 20 mm diameter anchored in plates fixed at the ends of the specimens (4 Picea abies webs and 4 Quercus robur webs). Pretensioning with unbonded tendons showed a clear improvement in the load capacity of the specimens with Picea abies webs, while the difference was not significant for the specimens with Quercus robur webs. Considering deflection, pretensioning gave the advantage of an initial precamber but also generated slight variations in the stiffness as a result of increasing the portion of the section that was in compression. The variation in the stiffness depended on the relation between the compressive and tensile moduli of elasticity parallel to the grain, and its influence on the deflection was analyzed using a finite element method.

Abstract:
Background: Moderate graft pretensioning in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is paramount to restore knee stability and normalize knee kinematics. However, little is known about the effect of graft pretensioning on graft-to-bone healing after ACL reconstruction. Hypothesis: Moderate graft pretensioning will improve bone formation within the bone tunnel after ACL reconstruction, resulting in superior load to failure. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: 67 male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent unilateral ACL reconstruction with a flexor digitorum longus tendon autograft. The graft was subjected to pretensioning forces of 0 N, 5 N, or 10 N. Custom-made external fixators were used for knee immobilization postoperatively. Rats were euthanized for biomechanical load-to-failure testing (n = 45) and micro–computed tomography (μCT) examination (n = 22) at 3 and 6 weeks after surgery. Three regions of each femoral and tibial bone tunnel (aperture, middle, and tunnel exit) were chosen for measurement of tunnel diameter and new bone formation. Results: Biomechanical tests revealed significantly higher load-to-failure in the 5-N graft pretensioned group compared with the 0- and 10-N groups at 3 weeks (8.58 ± 2.67 N vs 3.96 ± 1.83 N and 4.46 ± 2.62 N, respectively) and 6 weeks (16.56 ± 3.50 N vs 10.82 ± 1.97 N and 7.35 ± 2.85 N, respectively) after surgery ( P < .05). The mean bone tunnel diameters at each of the 3 regions were significantly smaller in the 5-N group, at both the femoral and tibial tunnel sites, than in the 0- and 10-N groups ( P < .05). At 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively, the bone mineral density, bone volume fraction, and connectivity density around the aperture and middle regions of the tibial bone tunnels were all significantly higher in the 5-N group compared with the 0- and 10-N groups ( P < .05). In the aperture and middle regions of the femoral bone tunnels, pretensioning at either 5 or 10 N resulted in increased bone formation compared with the nonpretensioned group at 3 weeks postoperatively. No differences were found in bone formation between any of the 3 femoral tunnel regions at 6 weeks. Conclusion: Graft pretensioning can stimulate new bone formation and improve tendon-to-bone tunnel healing after ACL reconstruction. Clinical Relevance: Optimal graft pretensioning force in ACL reconstruction can improve bone tunnel healing. Further study is necessary to understand the mechanisms underlying the effect of graft pretensioning on healing at the bone-tunnel interface.

Abstract:
Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) are becoming a popular reinforcement option for RC elements mainly due to good strength to weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. The main limitation for their wider application is their relatively low Young’s modulus, which results in unfavourable serviceability performance, in terms of early development of deflections and cracks. Among others, prestressing has been suggested as one of the possible approaches to addressing this issue, with encouraging results from research conducted so far. This experimental study aimed to explore prestress losses of basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP) reinforced pretensioned concrete beams. Five beams were produced, three of them internally reinforced with 6mm diameter BFRP bars, pretensioned to 20%, 30% and 40% of the ultimate load level of prestress. Additionally, two beams, acting as control samples, were reinforced with unprestressed BFRP and steel bars of same cross-sectional area, respectively. The dimensions of all samples were 125x200x1900 mm. Prestress losses were monitored with the aid of strain gauges attached to the reinforcing bars, as well as load cells. The strain readings were continuously taken during the pretensioning process, from initial application of the prestressing force, during casting and curing of concrete, until releasing of the beams from prestressing devices after curing. Ultimately, all samples were subjected to a quasi-static, load-controlled, four-point bending test until destruction. The results provide the information about the flexural behaviour of pretensioned BFRP reinforced beams, along with insight into some of the initial prestress losses of these elements.

Abstract:
Rock bolt support is an effective technique for controlling surrounding rock of deep roadway. The stability of the anchorage body composed of rock bolts and surrounding rock mass is the core in keeping the stability of roadways. In this paper, the UDEC Trigon model was used in simulating uniaxial compressive test on the anchorage body under different pretension loads. The energy equilibrium criterion of the anchorage body under the uniaxial compressive state was proposed. Furthermore, the fracture evolution and the energy dissipation during the failure process of the anchorage body were analyzed. Results showed that before the peak strength, the external work was stored in the anchorage body in the form of the elastic strain energy (Ue). After the peak, energy dissipated through three ways, including the fracture developing friction (Wf), plastic deformation (Wp), and acoustic emission (Ur). Based on the simulation results, the high pretensioned rock bolts can eliminate the continuous tensile fractures in the anchorage body, decreasing the damaging extent of the anchorage body and the energy that was consumed by the following two main approaches: fracture developing friction (Wf) and plastic deformation (Wp). Moreover, the surplus of the elastic strain energy (Ue) and the strength of the anchorage body can be improved. The pretension load had a positive relationship with elastic strain energy and a negative relationship with the anchorage body damage degree. Based on the above research, the transport roadway of the working face 6208 in the Wangzhuang Coal Mine selected tensile rock bolts to establish the high-performance anchorage body. The monitoring data showed that this reinforcement method effectively managed the serious deformation issue of the roadway surrounding the rock masses.

Pretension is the critical factor for cable supporting, but phenomenon of pretension loss exists in engineering practices. Tests of pretension loss carried out in Luan Zhangcun Mine show that the length and diameter of cables, anchorage, and degree of tension, tensioning equipments, and other factors will affect pretension loss of cables; the appropriate solution to reduce pretension loss is proposed. Ultra-tensioning 25% can ensure that the pretension meets the design requirements.

Abstract:
In this study, large amplitude free vibration behavior of a pretensioned Euler–Bernoulli beam is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The Hamilton's principle is used to derive the beam governing equation of motion. By implementing the Galerkin's method and assuming the clamped–clamped boundary condition, the partial differential equation is converted to an ordinary nonlinear differential equation. Because of the large coefficient of the nonlinear term, the new homotopy perturbation method proposed by He, is modified to solve the governing nonlinear equation. Comparing the first- and the second-order approximate solutions of the modified homotopy perturbation method (MHPM) and those available in the literature demonstrates that the second-order MHPM leads to a more accurate solution which is valid for a wide range of the vibration amplitudes. The results have been validated by the experimental tests and the MHPM method. Also, the results show that an increase in the vibration amplitude and/or the pretension load increases the fundamental resonance frequency ratio. Besides, it would decrease with increasing the beam slenderness ratio.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The pretension of building membrane structures may relax over its service lifetime, which may cause engineering failure under external loads. Therefore, the pretension of building membrane structures should be monitored or estimated regularly to compare the actual pretension to its design pretension and then to adopt some strengthening measures to mitigate future problems. Based on the geometrically nonlinear vibration of a rectangular orthotropic membrane structure, a nondestructive detection method for monitoring its pretension is developed in this article. This method is achieved by impacting a low-velocity pellet onto the membrane surface to generate vibration and detecting its response amplitude. Then the detected amplitude is converted into a pretension estimate via a derived formula. In addition, experiments for three kinds of conventional membrane material (Heytex H5573, Xing Yi Da, and ZZF 3010) were carried out according to the theoretical idea. The experimental results proved this method is feasible and verified the theoretical derivation is reasonable.

Abstract:
Pretension is a key factor affecting the performance of rock bolt. It is usually applied on the bolt by tightening the nut. The efficiency of the torque-to-pretension conversion is significantly influenced by the thread rolling accuracy. In this study, the influence of the thread rolling accuracy upon the pretension is investigated. Factors influencing the thread rolling efficiency, i.e., rock bolt material quality, rolling technic and equipments, are examined. To study the relationship between torque and pretension, a laboratory table was specially designed and a series of tests were carried out on the rock bolts with different thread accuracy. The result indicates that the higher the thread rolling accuracy, the higher the coefficient of torque-to-pretension conversion. And the coefficient can be improved by daubing lubrication oil on the thread. In China, the rock bolt thread encounters the issue of low rolling accuracy which results in coarse thread surface. As a result, the efficiency of the torque-to-pretension conversion is greatly reduced. In addition, the rock bolt is susceptible to break at the thread end. Essential approach to resolve these issues is to significantly improve the thread rolling accuracy by adopting advanced equipment.

Abstract:
Under the acid rain corrosion condition, the shear-bearing capacity of the pretension prestressed concrete beam will attenuate gradually with the stirrup corrosion and concrete deteriorate. Moreover, the stress corrosion cracking failure and the bond force degradation of the prestressed wires that caused by the aggravated corrosion mediator ingress will further increase the shear failure risk of the pretension prestressed concrete structure without any symptom. The paper presents a shear bearing capacity calculation model of the pretension prestressed concrete beam bridge and discuss the time-variation model of the stirrup corrosion considering the effective prestress attenuation under the acid rain corrosion condition. The analysis method on anti-shear reliability of existing pretension prestressed concrete beam bridges under the sodium sulfate corrosion condition is proposed then. The method will be used in the durability and safety evaluation of the shear-bearing capacity of the existing pretension prestressed concrete beam bridges in the corrosion environment with acid rain.

In this method, the whole cablenet system is firstly divided into several groups according to its axial symmetry to simplify its balance matrix, and then balance matrix analysis method is used to analyze balance matrix of grouped cablenet system. Next, the corresponding optimum mathematic model for grouped cablenet system can be established with pretension solutions coefficients as design variables and evenness of pretension distribution as objective function. Finally, generalized reduced gradient algorithm is used to solve the optimum mathematic model of an example, and the result is satisfactory.
